With The World’s End, Edgar Wright, Pegg, and Nick Frost complete the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy they began with Shaun of the Dead and continued with Hot Fuzz. Up until this point, the plot was tightly under wraps with no mention of skin-walking alien invaders, which now just makes the film all the more awesome. And again with the fences.

In the film, Pegg and Frost join Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, and Eddie Marsan as a group of old friends reuniting for an epic pub crawl. However, they’ve inconveniently scheduled it the same night as armageddon. Check out the poster below and let me know what you think. Seems to me that if it were my last night on Earth, I’d want something a bit tastier than “good” food.

Now that the film is coming to America, we have a red band trailer for Attack the Block that gives a better look at what all the praise has been about. It’s shows a lot of action, scares, and a clearer idea of the film’s sense of humor. Looks like a clever comedy that doesn’t pull any punches.

Attack The Block is the directorial debut of Joe Cornish.

But I should probably hold off on the mescaline with all these inner city youths around. Their access to swords and explosives is far too easy. If anyone needs me, I’ll be hiding under the pile of coats in Nana’s room. (Guardian)

Directed by Joe Cornish, the movie focuses on a group of inner city youths who have to defend their home against alien invaders. Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper had this to say, “Steve Bersch screened this film for me and I fell completely in love with it.  The film is, at once, charming, scary, funny, hip, clever and completely hits its mark. I hope this is the beginning of a long relationship with these incredibly talented filmmakers.”

Early buzz is that the film is fantastic and I look forward to seeing it in the theater here when it is eventually released. But don’t feel too bad if you spent all that money on a ticket to Europe. They have really good KFC’s in England. I can’t put my finger on it, but they are better than they are over in the States. (Deadline)

Paul is like all those comedies I used to like, the kind where they were just plain good. They had a little of everything and just worked. That makes it harder to write about since there’s no hook except overall solid work, but I’m up to the task.

Graeme (Simon Pegg) and Clive (Nick Frost) are Brits visiting Comic-Con. On the road to Area 51, they meet an actual alien Paul (Seth Rogen). Paul needs their help but won’t tell them much at first. At an RV park, they pick up Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig), a devout Catholic who experiences an awakening when she witnesses the existence of Paul. Agents Zoil (Jason Bateman), O’Reilly (Joe Lo Truglio) and Haggard (Bill Hader) are on their tail.

Pegg and Frost, who wrote the script, deliver on all the sci-fi, comic book and general movie references you’d hope for. You’ll hear familiar music, lines of dialogue and even a reference to spoilers themselves, incorporated seamlessly into the narrative. Try to catch the obscure Capturing the Friedmans joke. It’s not all mainstream. Clive and Graeme also recreate some familiar action moments that I just know Frost and Pegg were saving since Hot Fuzz (the age old “grab my hand” bit.)

It’s not ALL sci-fi, so there’s plenty to amuse general audiences, although it never sells out the target audience for a mainstream laugh. They do sex jokes, drugs jokes and some good old fashioned immaturity, mooning through windshields and swearing creatively. I love the running gags. Whenever a joke happens more than once, it’s instantly funnier to me.

Paul is a great character. He’s the everyman alien so he gets indignant about alien clichés, and he has base needs like anyone. The CGI looks real and interactive with the scene and characters. It never feels like they had to construct a scene to fit the effect. Clive and Graeme are delightful, childish foreigners and Ruth has a sweet arc in between Wiig-y profanity outbursts, which are also awesome.

Like the classic comedies, there’s a bit of depth with Paul confronting Ruth’s creationist beliefs. Paul actually heals Ruth, which is sweet considering at that point in the story he hates her. Is it predictable? Yes, in that I knew where the story was going, but I’d also call that paying off. Most importantly, it’s all funny.

SYNOPSIS: Two British comic-book geeks traveling across the U.S. encounter an alien outside Area 51.

The producers of that film are back with Attack The Block. The Inner City takes on Outer Space when an alien species heretofor unknown to science attacks project housing in South London. The residents rise up to become unlikely heroes although they’d rather stay home and play FIFA. You may be curious why Nick Frost appears as a guy who pals around with children but you can relax. He’s merely there to sell them drugs. No funny stuff.

It looks like fun summer entertainment. Early reviews are great, so here’s hoping it does well with American audiences as well. Otherwise, it will be filed away with Club Dread in the Films We Never Speak Of bin. (Empire)

However, in these clips, I can see the elements working together nicely. Comic-Con, secret government alien (?) weed, girl-on-robot sex: these are the topics that all movies should discuss. Plus director Greg Mottola shot Superbad, which I continue to McLovin, despite how dated that reference has already become.

All three films are highly anticipated, but for vastly different reasons. Paul, a road comedy about two men and an alien(!), is the third film starring and written by the Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz duo, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who spin genre comedy into nerd gold. Foster’s The Beaver is the tale of a seriously disturbed man who connects with his loved ones using a beaver hand puppet, and he’s played by notoriously disturbed man Mel Gibson. The O’Brien doc should excite audiences with a behind the scenes look at the struggles of the talk show host you love to root for.

The fest kicks off March 11th and runs through the 19th. Opening starts with Duncan Jones‘ Source Code, a thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan. (The Playlist)

I am a little concerned about Seth Rogen though. I heard he was trying to slim down but I think he’s gone too far. His skin is all pale, and his eyes are so bugged out. Not to mention the total lack of body hair. I’m afraid that whatever crash diet he subjected himself to, just wasn’t the healthiest route to go. And all for what? To see his name up in lights?? Sadly, another victim of the Fame Monster.

The comedy tells the story of two UFO nuts who happen upon a stranded alien while traveling to Area 51. The pair decide to help the creature rather than turn him over to the authorities. Normally, a character that is completely CGI comes off as kind of corny, with a few obvious exceptions (LOTR, Avatar, etc.). But for Paul, it might actually add to the laughs.

I myself once picked up an alien trying to get back to its far away home world of “Guatemala.” But I was afraid it was going to lay eggs in my stomach, so I tried to beat it to death with a rake. It got away, but not before I taught it a valuable lesson about the resilience of mankind. Also, the cops came. (First Showing)

Over the weekend we got c*ck-teased with snippets of images from a first look at Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Longest Title Ever. Now Empire has officially unbuttoned its blouse and unleashed the goods. We have three honest-to-goodness official images.

Jamie Bell plays Tintin and Snowy his dog is played by…not Andy Serkis! Haha! Gotchu! You totally thought that since it was a mo-cap animal it HAD to be Andy Serkis. He’s not in every mo-cap movie, ya know? But he is in this one, as Captain Haddock. You couldn’t keep that guy away from a unitard with diodes on it if you tried.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Longest Title Ever doesn’t come out until next Christmas, so check out the pics after the jump to get a taste.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have teamed up in the past to take on horror and the action genre, now they’ve set their sights on sci-fi. As this teaser for Paul will show you, the pair play nuuurrrdddssss who encounter an alien outside of Area 51.

Not much comedy is shown in this teaser and I need to applaud Greg Mottola‘s restraint in not having the alien play air guitar or perform a Black Eyed Peas song. Because that’s the constant temptation and danger with working with CGI characters. Before you even realize it, you’ve veered into Alvin and the Chipmunks territory.
