Production on the upcoming John Gotti biopic hit a minor snag today, as the film is currently without a director. Nick Cassavetes has left the project due to scheduling conflicts resulting from an earlier commitment to the indie flick Yellow. While losing a director is not what industry insiders would call a “good” thing, Gotti: Three Generations had been tracking nicely, having locked down John Travolta as the legendary mobster, Lindsay Lohan circling the part of Victoria Gotti, and Joe Pesci landing a role as a (gasp!) mobster. It will be the 1,237th time that Pesci has played a member of an organized crime family.

Cassavettes’ name lent credibility to the project, which originally perceived by many to feel more like a TV movie of the week, rather than a prestige release. So while his departure certainly creates logistical problems, it would appear that the project is far enough along in development that this shouldn’t serve as a death blow to the project.

The studio hasn’t had time to run through possible replacements, so allow me to suggest one: John Woo. He and Nic Cage made magic in Face/Off. Let them recreate that magic. (Variety)

Neeson’s cameo as a tattoo artist in Bangkok was cut from The Hangover Part II. Director Todd Phillips needed to re-shoot the scene for continuity reasons three weeks ago, but Neeson was in London shooting Clash of the Titans 2: Titan Up. At the last minute, Phillips got Nick Cassavetes to sub-in.

“He came in and crushed it and that is the scene that you will ultimately see in the film,” said Phillips in a recent interview. “[I'm excited for everyone] to see the film. It turned out great.”

The small part has been recast three times. It was going to be played by Mel Gibson, until the cast was like, “he’s… kind of a horrible racist?” So then they cast Neeson, but the above hullabaloo led to Cassavetes nabbing the role. A lot of fuss over a small cameo – hopefully they had time to focus on, y’know, the rest of the movie.

The Hangover Part II drunkenly stumbles into theaters May 26, though the film may not remember it did that on the 27th. (Variety)

A few months back it was reported that producer Marc Fiore was courting burly Hollywood tough guy John Travolta for the biopic Gotti: Three Generations. Well, those candlelit dinners and Build-A-Bear keepsakes must have paid off because the two just sealed the deal. Travolta is locked in to play the Teflon Don himself, John Gotti.

It all seems to be coming together as Nick Cassavetes has also signed on to direct. An offer went out to James Franco to play John Gotti Jr., but there are no updates on that casting. We’re also not sure who will play the grandsons who starred in the reality series “Growing Up Gotti.” But let’s just assume Fiore has offers out to the cast of”Jersey Shore.” It’s really not that outlandish of an idea when you consider Kim Kardashian is in the running. Director Nick Cassavetes (John Q, The Notebook) has his next project in the works, which will perversely not make teenage girls cry despite the subject matter. It’s going to be about Rick Ross – not the rapper, but the famous Miami dealer the rapper named himself after. He wasn’t just any drug dealer, though:

“Ross was a major player slinging up to 100 kg of the stuff per day and he claims that he was supplied by Contras who wer fighting the Nicaraguan government at the time … those same Contras that were funded by officials in Ronald Reagan’s administration.”

Apparently, the Contra connection gives Cassavetes a personal connection to the story, as his brother was a mercenary in Nicaragua during this time. He adds: “The fact that our government may have been complicit in destroying an entire community of people makes the story personal for everyone.” He also compares the movie to Traffic, which would be awesome if he were Steven Soderbergh, but he isn’t, so we’ll have to wait and see.
