Anyone who’s ever had the privilege of participating in a pub quiz knows the fun that can be had when friends, booze, and cheerful competition meld together. So naturally, NBC wants to bottle that magic and sell it to couch potatoes in sitcom form.

From Chris Moynihan, who helped bing us Veep, comes an untitled show about a group of friends who get together every week for a pub quiz. What else do we know? Well, THR tells us that the group of characters in question are millennials, and…that’s it! Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

Eh, Friends and The League were based around similarly thin premises, and they turned out okay, so let’s believe that a guy involved with Veep knows what he’s doing.

Besides, if they make a show about it, that means we can sort of experience it for ourselves just by laying around on our couch. Now if only they made a show about losing weight…

In what can only be seen as a victory, however small, for originality on network television, NBC has announced that it’s not going forward with its Game of Thrones (?)-inspired Wizard of Oz spinoff Emerald City. Why? It hasn’t been explicitly stated, but the hunch is that no one wanted to see the Wizard of Oz get tossed in among the glut of other TV adaptations of works in the public domain.

The show had been given a straight-to-series order, making the news all the more surprising. Normally the network would order a pilot, then decide based on that. But this time, the network was TOTALLY sure it wanted the show. Until it decided it didn’t at all.

The producers will keep shopping the show around, but if our God is a merciful and just God, this thing will die on the vine and maybe the networks can air an original show with new ideas and characters.

To commemorate the release of the season 6 DVD set that very few people will actually buy, NBC has given us a lovely gift: yet another Parks and Recreation gag reel. As the show gets older, the stars get bigger, and everyone seems to stop caring as much, which makes for some VERY funny outtakes.

Also, the humor runs a little profane, so if you’re listening at work, might wanna toss those headphones on.

A sampling from Chris Pratt‘s nonsensical improv: “My mom carried me to term for 17 months. I was born with a full head of hair…a full head of teeth.”

Just watch this. You won’t regret it.

You missed Bill Cosby. You didn’t even know you did, but you did. With his crescendos into that high-pitched voice, the dancing while the eyes roll upward, and the sweaters. Oh those, glorious sweaters. Come January you won’t have to subsist on late night TV Land reruns any more. Sony, NBC and The Coz have gotten together to bring NBC a multigenerational sitcom, starring the comedian.

The project will star Cosby as Jonathan Franklin, a grandfather who lives with his extended family, yada, yada, patriarch, etc.

It’s going to be the Cosby show with more people. That’s what this sounds like. The show will be written and produced by TV veteran Mike O’Malley and will likely stick to the multicamera format, so it sounds like they’re not going for anything terribly groundbreaking here. Take Cosby, put him in front of a camera, let him do stuff.

That’s how you make a hit show.

And here’s this in celebration:

Ok. Screen Junkies’ readership probably isn’t too big into musical theater, but that’s only because it’s suffered a lack of Christopher Walken. NBC’s putting a stop to that with by casting him as Captain Hook in a live broadcast performance of a Peter Pan musical.

Why? Because the network saw great numbers from The Sound of Music Live starring Carrie Underwood, and, as we all know, Christopher Walken is just a better version of Carrie Underwood.

The lead role of Peter Pan hasn’t yet been cast, but in form true to the original(s), they had reached out to a female actor in Kristen Bell.

Whoa. Are they trying to make this good or something? Careful NBC, you might actually get a good cast in this thing unless you run, don’t walk to cast someone from a reality singing competition.

The post Alec Baldwin Considering Returning To NBC…To Play A Depraved Mayor appeared first on Screen Junkies.

What does a “depraved mayor” do? Whatever the hell they please! But actually, “depraved Mayor” was my phrasing. What Deadline, which is reporting the story, referred to a role as was “Rob Ford-type mayor.” Meaning that he LOVES crack and speaking about cunnilingus to the media. Either way, to iterate, Alec Baldwin is mulling a return to TV comedy as such a mayor.

Either way you phrase it, count me in. And if there was any question, the city which he would govern would be New York. The Windy Apple.

Now, Baldwin has a few other competing projects, but none are locked down. And as good as he is in films like The Departed, he seemed to have found his real calling in TV, between his 30 Rock gig and SNL appearances. So NBC certainly appreciate the fiber of his fabric. So go there, Alec. Despite your differences. I mean, you’re Alec Baldwin, so you’re likely going to have differences with everyone. Might as well be super funny while you do.

Hulu

Netflix

NBC

USC

HBO

USA

Yahoo!

Yahoo?

I’m sorry. “Yahoo!?”

Ugh. “Yahoo!” is a nightmare to punctuate. Yeah, the show is going to Yahoo! To air on the Internet. Streaming and such.

I’m sure there are lots of questions in response to this news, so let’s get to them:

All the principal cast members will return except for Jonathan Banks, Donald Glover, and obviously, Chevy Chase. The show will have roughly the same budget as on NBC, which is weird. There will be 13 episodes. They will air this fall.

And that’s about it. This show never seems to die, so a little more good news for its rabid, tortured fan base. Keep your head up, guys. You got 13 more episodes coming.

Your dreams of Community being saved by Hulu have been kicked down the stairs and smashed through the window before landing on a flight of stairs outside that window and then falling down those. In other words, it isn’t happening. Hulu has reportedly abandoned talks with Sony to pick up the canceled NBC sitcom for its sixth season. Just as well. A show like Community would never find an audience on the Internet.

But Sony hasn’t thrown in the towel just yet. The cast has one week left in their contracts and Sony is rumored to be motivated to find this show a home lest Danny Pudi begin a string of unfunny, nerd cameos on shows far less than funny than the one that put him on the map. (TV Line)

Even though it had been circling the drain for most of its five seasons, the reality that Community is really, finally cancelled was beginning to sink in for most of its slavishly devoted fans. But that’s all over now, as Hulu has announced they’re speaking with Sony Pictures Television to bring back the show for 13 more episodes.

In essence, the show, its fans, and its critical acclaim would all serve legitimize Hulu from “the streaming site” to a real, actual network, much as Netflix has been doing with its content.

Being “in conversations” isn’t a very advanced stage of development, so this should provide just enough hope to Community fans that they get their hearts broken. It’s sort of like spitballing the idea around while playing Nerf basketball in a boardroom. Not exactly a legally binding arrangement.

However, it’s remarkable, in the wake of this announcement, how close the little show that could is to its lofty goal of six seasons and a movie. If Hulu moves, they could just be one movie away.

The post Dan Harmon Isn’t Super Bummed About ‘Community’ Cancellation appeared first on Screen Junkies.

When news broke that NBC had cancelled Community, we were all worried about Dan Harmon. How would he take the news? Would there be yelling and breaking things and then rolling around on those pieces of broken things while crying?? Instead, he has responded with calm and maturity and didn’t even say the word rape.

“I was on my way to LAX and somebody from Sony called me,” Harmon said. “The fans of that show have more reason to be upset than I do. I can try to make another show and also I got paid for every minute I cared about that show. The people that are most devastated are people who put unpaid labor into the show [aka fans]. They didn’t get compensated for it. They loved the show.”

But it’s still coming back, though, right? RIGHT?!! Before you get all worked up, don’t. Harmon cautions fans that it will be an incredible battle to bring the show back elsewhere. The campaign will be long and taxing and families will be torn apart, and he can’t ask the fans to do that. In the words of Adele Dazeem, let it go. Although, in the case that it isn’t difficult, that’d be cool too.

Anyway, I will not be standing in the way. I’m sorry to anyone that’s really taking this cancellation hard. I know how I felt when these fuckers killed Max Headroom. But you sit back and treat yourself to some New Girl and Parks and Mindy and Brooklyn 99 and Eagleheart and Portlandia and have you seen Matt Berry’s Toast of London? It’s awesome. Also not to be selfish but maybe check out Rick and Morty. And let TV be the needy clown that it’s still very overpaid to be, and let the suits deal with the suits and see what possibilities exist. That’s the best we can do for now. Ninety seven episodes. Over eighty pretty good ones. Mission accomplished.

He’s taking it well and looking ahead. It’s refreshing to see someone so prone to obsession walk away without having burned everything down.

There are certain constants in this world. the most notable of which is, “If there is nothing good on TV, at the very least, I can watch a Law & Order rerun. I don’t care if I’ve seen it before.”

However, we often forget, to make those Law & Order: Special Victims Unit reruns, we must actually have a first-run L&O series on NBC. So the network, as a means to the end of cranking out those reruns, has announced that the show will come back for a 16th season.

More rapes, more painfully-named fake Internet sites, more instances of Ice-T deeming things “messed up,” and more painfully-named fake Internet sites. I really can’t stress the Internet thing enough. They’re terrible.

In yet another disappointing story of a talented musician flocking to reality TV, Gwen Stefani will join Pharrell and two other “coaches” for the upcoming season.

To The Voice’s credit, its talent pool seems to be improving from its first year, having gotten more currently relevant, durable, and legitimate stars than Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Cee-Lo, and Christina Aguilera. Of course, those other two spots could still be for Shelton and Levine, so let’s not get too excited.

Nonetheless, while Stefani isn’t exactly at the peak of her career, there are several things her fans would like to see her do be for hosting a singing competition. I’m guessing. I don’t really know what Gwen Stefani fans want, other than to be told how to spelled “bananas,” and maybe an entourage of Japanese girls.

But I think on some level, in this crazy world, that’s really all any of us want.

Effective May 1st, nbccomedyplayground.com will be up and running. Though it sounds like a hidden-camera show that follows the wacky misadventures of toddlers at recess, it’s actually a site where you can submit your pitches and work-ups for shows. NBC will air two of the winners during primetime, and the bronze medal winner will get a web series.

NBC President Jennifer Salke said she wishes to target people who are “making things, but that haven’t already had something on the air.” So your friend that’s been airing a show about a zombie romance in his garage now has a chance for a nationwide TV show.

However, the show orders will only be six episodes, so if you think you’re going to make the next 24, you’ll probably only get the protagonist to lunch before you get replaced by a Megan Mullaly variety show or something.

Few shows in recent memory had a better initial season, only to squander it during its sophomore effort. Heroes is one such show. A show that felt a little bloated and unfocused, but was still very entertaining, in its second season, it sprawled even further and introduced a bunch of stuff no one asked for (time travel?). Nonetheless, NBC, in its infinite wisdom, is bringing it back.

As a miniseries. Without much of the original cast. In 2015.

I’ll let you catch your breath and allow your heart to stop racing.

The return, which will be run by original showrunner Tim Kring, will be titled Heroes Reborn (yuck), and the details are being kept under wraps. The show announced its return with this weird little spot during the Saturday night Olympics.

Move over, Matt Lauer. You are not wanted here. You don’t break ground; you are just like a different, softer version of Costas. We need someone who’s going to shake things up while Bobby C gets his corneas drained.

[ENTER VIERA]

Meredith Viera, best known for being a warm, but stern pragmatist on every channel of daytime television, will be taking her talents to Sochi as she subs in for Pinkeye, becoming the first woman to host the Olympic Games. Well, cities host the Olympic Games, not people, but she’ll be hosting the Olympic Games studio show for NBC, which is FAR less impressive, but still something outlets keep bringing up, because people click on Olympics stories, no matter how contrived. *Wink*

Speaking of grossly tedious Olympic news, Costas’ eyes are getting better, but are still very sensitive to light, so if you’ve been looking to prank Bob Costas with a flashlight, now is your chance.

(Please don’t shine a flashlight in Bob Costas face. He’s done nothing to you.)

Tonight will be Jay Leno‘s final show as the host of NBC’s Tonight Show, after a more or less consecutive 22-year run. In a move particularly fitting for the host who thrived in comfort and the familiar, he will be having his first-ever guests back on for the finale. Those two are…

Garth Brooks and Billy Crystal.

I guess there’s no better way for geriatric favorite Jay Leno to go out than by throwing up a big middle finger to the younger tastemakers of today and saying “Eff you! This is how we did this shit back in ’92. Leno! What! LENO!!! WHAT!!!”

I’m not sure it will go down like that, but it’s my guess.

In case you’re more concerned with looking forward than backward, Jimmy Fallon‘s run of the Tonight Show begins on February 17th.

Ok, so it wasn’t flat out stated, but it kind of was. At the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, NBC President Robert Greenblatt said, “I’m going to go out on a limb: Parks & Rec is going to have a seventh season.”

So, while he may have gone out on a limb, network presidents normally aren’t the people who end up eating their words, so good, bad or otherwise, it sounds like Knope and company will be back.

Parks and Recreation has been stronger than normal this year, as has Community. However, Community didn’t get the same strength of endorsement from Greenblatt, meaning that, as always, it’s fate is unknown. “Six seasons and a movie,” the fans’ de facto rallying cry, is actually within sight. Who knew?

It’s not often that entertainment outlets get to report on networks taking a chance on something that’s original and…good, but NBC has done something like that with Salvation, a drama about the behind the scenes workings and personalities of a Texas mega church.

In case the name didn’t clear things up, a mega church is a really, really, really big church, the type of which has come under fire for its treatment of religion as a business, and a sometimes shady on at that.

While plot details are scant (essentially, “A mother tries to defend her children and fair after her husband dies mysteriously”), let’s hope that the message and drama doesn’t get watered down in an effort to appease the significant audience members that are just fine with mega churches, thankyouverymuch.

Since his stint on The Office, Craig Robinson has made quite a name for himself in the Apatow-verse, but he never really seemed like a big enough personality to carry a film, so news of him coming back to TV isn’t entirely surprising.

His new show, Mr. Robinson, focuses on his character, a middle school music teacher, who “puts the rules to the test.” Whatever. It will probably be pretty funny, and Craig Robinson is a big fan of music, as his comedy appearances and his delightful song in This Is The End demonstrated.

NBC passed on the show in May, but, realizing that they’re NBC, and they can’t really afford to be picky, picked the show up for six episodes today.

In their steadfast refusal to address anything even remotely close to the human condition, NBC continues its march through the characters of the public domain, this time with Wolfman, a show about a wolf-man, or something. Who cares.

This can be heaped in with the Hannibal reboot, the new Dracula show, cleverly titled Dracula, and Grimm, a show about fairy tales in modern times. Or something. Don’t care about any of these shows.

Some redeeming news is that the show will be overseen by the producer of Carnivale, which means it ought be plenty weird, which will at least distinguish it from its watered-down contemporaries.

Oh yeah, we forgot about the Jekyll and Hyde medical show Do No Harm that lasted about two episodes. Man, that show sucked too.

Regular cut-up yuckster Jay Leno has ruined another life. During a segment called “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda,” Leno prompted three comedians to make jokes about the flight attendant accused of hiding her pet rat in her underwear during flights. The jokes implied that she and the rat are totally banging. For the record, they are not.

The Long Island woman is suing the comedian as well as The Tonight Show and NBC Universal for these jokes made at her expense which have had a negative impact upon her standing in the community and in her own marriage. The suit alleges “every time [her husband] looks at her he thinks of Defendant Leno and the heinous segment depicting her as a sexual deviant.” We can understand how thinking of Leno would ruin the mood. A vitriolic rift has shaken Hollywood, and the nation at large over the weekend as Angela Lansbury, former Murder, She Wrote star, has taken a stance against calling the rebooted series Murder, She Wrote. The new series will star Octavia Spencer and will air on NBC in the near future.

Lansbury didn’t pull any punches when she exclaimed (in a very soft, gentle voice, no doubt):

“I think it’s a mistake to call it Murder, She Wrote because Murder, She Wrote will always be about a Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person … So I’m sorry that they have to use the title Murder, She Wrote, even though they have access to it and it’s their right.”

Whoa. And the gloves come off!!!

May I simply suggest avoiding this whole mess by renaming the series, Manslaughter,  She Jotted Down?

It’s one thing to know your audience. It’s another thing to pander to them so shamelessly that your show turns into a self-indulgent meta-fest that essentially scares away casual viewers.

Of course, one could argue that this is the foundation upon which Community was built, and they would probably be correct. Additions to the “Adult Swim on NBC” program will spotlight “comedians” Tim & Eric (I put “comedians” in quotes because I don’t think they’re “funny”) and Mitch Hurwitz, who created a very funny TV show in Arrested Development, but that doesn’t mean he should be on TV.

Also, Dan Harmon has probably quit and rejoined the show four times since you started reading this, Donald Glover may appear depressed on Instagram but is really just sensitive, and Chevy Chase apparently broke on to set and urinated all over wardrobe.

COMMUNITY!

I’ve found the perfect analogy here, so don’t you dare stop reading now. If the world of network television can be compared to the competitive environment of bookstores in the cinematic tour de force You’ve Got Mail, then NBC is the mom-and-pop book store, and the rest of the TV landscape would be Fox Books.

But rather than have Meg Ryan seduce and make love to the rest of the networks in order to garner some leniency (which I’m sure NBC nor Ryan have ruled out), the Peacock will just toss her in a sitcom. Undoubtedly, the pitch went something like this:

NBC Exec One: Our network sucks. We need a great idea to fix it, and one that isn’t Knight Rider, the Munsters, or some gritty reboot of some bullshit fairy tale story.

(Deafening, uncomfortable silence from the table)

NBC Exec Two: Meg…Ryan?

NBC Exec One: Perfect! HALF DAY!

Ryan will be playing a non-confrontational, single mom (oh fuck me, really?) who returns to a publishing company that she used to run, only to find herself working for a thirty year old.

If you can find ways to make this concept more trite, please send your suggestions to NBC Studios, c/o Anthrax Receivables.

Because the apex of creativity occurred sometime in the mid-1980′s, NBC (of course it’s NBC) is getting in the ole’ wayback machine to reboot the vaguely memorable show Remington Steele in half-hour comedy form. Because everyone familiar with the original is either dead or dying, allow me to synopsize: A woman, played by Stephanie Zimbalist, opened a detective agency, but found no one wanted to hire a woman PI. So she hired Pierce Brosnan‘s con man as her acting boss.

HILARIOUS AND FUN.

Anyway, the reboot will revolve around the couple’s daughter, who reopens the agency. The series will be produced by Zombieland and Gangster Squad‘s Ruben Fleischer, which is pretty weird as well.

NBC, in what seems to be a misguided attempt to do something less bad than they normally do, has announced their production of Tin Man, the story of a fugitive robot who makes us think about the philosophical implications of artificial intelligence.

It’s a noble effort, but NBC historically doesn’t make people think. It occasionally makes people laugh, and often makes them frustrated, but never horny. An indication this trend will continue is the fact that this series is created by a guy who wrote many, many Transformers movies, Ehren Kruger. So while he might know a little about robots, he doesn’t know much about not pissing people off.
