BUT, it's supposed to get better (if it's allowed to).

Mulaney was lauded by many to be the lone beacon of hope and humor aid the annual parade of network sitcom crap. Comedian John Mulaney has a rabid and deserved following, and the cast (Nasim Pedrad, Elliot Gould, Martin Short) was an A-team of talent.

HOWEVER…it’s been three episodes, and (speaking as HUGE fan of John Mulaney) the show is terrible (We said so here.). And while fans hold out hope, the general public isn’t so patient and generally has its mind made up a month into a show’s run. Since these horrible episodes have gotten horrible ratings, Fox, which had originally ordered 16 episodes, today trimmed the order down to 13, which doesn’t sound that bad, until you realize that the show had already shot 13 episodes. So basically, the network has said, “No more filming on Mulaney.”

I hope the show gets better, and critics say it does, but it won’t be long before any improvement will be too late.

(Deadline)

Is it possible that NBC somehow exercised good judgement? Mulaney, the new sitcom starring comedian John Mulaney, was passed over by NBC and eventually found its home at FOX. At the time, it was assumed that they’d Britta’d it as they so often do and threw out a potentially huge sitcom from one of the most genuinely funny people alive. According to this preview, maybe NBC made the right call. I’m sad to report that Mulaney looks shockingly weird and bad.
First off, it’s obviously the product of audience testing and network interference. We’ve got the affable black guy, a zany bearded guy dressed like Steve Zisou, mostly flat jokes, and an apartment that looks like it was Frankensteined together with parts of the Seinfeld and Friends sets. I’m really hoping this is just a bad preview because I really want to like this. Can’t they just have Mulaney move in with Martin Short and not have any friends?

Mulaney, one of the only sitcoms in recent history to generate any sort of positive buzz before getting picked up…didn’t get picked up by NBC, much to the chagrin of the SNL writer’s fan base.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that the series was in limbo for several months, it wasn’t able to hang on to stars Elliott Gould and Nasim Pedrad, but was able to keep Martin Short as Mulaney’s boss. I call that a net gain. The show will be written by, produced by, and star Mulaneys as a New York writer for a game show host (Short).

The order is only for six episodes, but hopefully enough people can get on board (probably in spring) that it gets a full-season order shortly.

Do this for us, network TV. We need this.
