When reflecting on the lost art of movie posters, I always refer back to the opening moments of The Mist. After hot shot poster artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) loses his latest masterpiece in the storm that causes the titular mist, Drayton laments to his wife, Stephanie, that he’ll have to call the studio and request an extension on his deadline. When she asks what other choice the studio would have in the matter, Drayton responds:

“You kiddin’? They could whip up some bad Photoshop poster in an afternoon. They do it all the time, two big heads.”

And indeed, when Hollywood ad agencies aren’t blatantly ripping off poster artists without compensating them, they’re whipping together photoshopped atrocities that combine Stevie Wonder’s understanding of perspective with an intentional misunderstanding of how human anatomy works.

Until now, Good Luck Chuck and Bangkok Dangerous were considered the far and away worst offenders of photoshop failures in movie posters. Until now.

Ladies and gentleman, may we present to you the poster for Hit By Lightning.

We have no idea what the plot of Hit By Lightning is, but based on the poster, we’re going to assume that it tells the tale of a child-bodied alien in an ill-fitting mansuit and the Earth woman whom he switches bodies with at the moment of orgasm. And then murders people, maybe. Or it’s about a pair of siamese twin brothers joined at the bathrobe and their quest to lose their virginity. Or Will Sasso plays a serial killer who dutch ovens newlywed couples to death. We’re thinking it’s the latter, because if Sasso’s face is reading anything, it’s “farty.”

Why is Will Sasso clothed in this poster? Like, fully clothed? And why was that particular photo of him used when he was *clearly* standing when it was taken? Does Jon Cryer really have the torso of a 13 year-old boy and the head of a brontosaurus? And is his skin tone really that smooth? (Because if so, damn bruh.) Where is Stephanie Szostak looking, exactly? Why, oh why, couldn’t they line the f*cking names up under the right f*cking actors?

This poster comes to us courtesy of Bravo Design, Inc. a company which we’re going to presume have since been laughed right out of the industry. And the craziest part? That’s not even the worst poster for Hit By Lightning. *This* is the worst one:

My God. I’m guessing the unifying theme of this movie is supposed to be upward facing hands? Because that seems like a thinner premise than Tusk if that’s the case.

But there you have it: The absolute bottom of the barrel of a dying art form in a cold, heartless industry. We should all be ashamed.

Just because an idea is simple doesn’t mean that it can’t be profound — just look at the films of Jim Jarmusch, the early works of The Beatles, or the “Push for Pizza” app, if you don’t believe me. Amidst all the intellectually vacant CGIfests and needlessly convoluted action/superhero movies (looking at you, Winter Soldier) currently clogging up theaters, a simple, straightforward moviegoing experience can be a breath of fresh air to critics and fans alike, and the same goes for the posters used to market the films themselves.

Movie posters, not unlike movie trailers, have taken a turn for the over-indulgent as of late, it seems. When the latter aren’t revealing every twist and turn a film’s story will take months before it is even released, the latter are evoking memories of 9/11 to market mutant goddamn turtles. Simplicity is sometimes key, folks, and these “minimalist movie posters” demonstrate that to a tee.

Check out 21 of our favorites in the gallery above, then let us know which current movies you’d like to see given the minimalist treatment. (My vote is for If I Stay, and it’s just a picture of a crudely drawn, leaky feeding tube. I’ll see myself out.)

If you were of movie-going age twenty years ago, consider yourself lucky — 1994 was one of the greatest years in the history of modern cinema. It was the year that gave us stone-cold classics like Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption, cult-favorites like Natural Born Killers and Clerks, and Jim Carrey demolishing the box office three separate times. Also, Forrest Gump gobbled up six Oscars, while Speed only won two, proving once again how out-of-touch the Academy is.

For today’s installment of Throwback Thursday, we’re honoring some of the best flicks of ’94 through their classic movie posters. Check out our favorites in the gallery above, and let the waves of nostalgia wash over you.

Mad Max: Fury Road — Posters and Comic-Con Trailer http://www.screenjunkies.com/gallery/mad-max-fury-road-posters-and-comic-con-trailer/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/gallery/mad-max-fury-road-posters-and-comic-con-trailer/#comments Sun, 27 Jul 2014 20:31:01 +0000 bgoldstein http://www.screenjunkies.com/?post_type=gallery&p=263447 Director George Miller describes the fourth 'Mad Max' installment as a "105-minute chase scene through the wasteland." So yeah, this should be awesome.

Mad Max: Fury Road won’t hit theaters until May 2015, but Warner Brothers has started teasing it with some early posters (see above) and a first-look trailer that dropped at Comic-Con on Saturday. So far, we like what we see.

Although Fury Road looks noticeably slicker than the gritty, grimy Mad Max trilogy that preceded it — 1979′s Mad Max, 1981′s The Road Warror, and 1985′s Beyond Thunderdome, all directed by George Miller — it’s still packed with the kind of post-apocalyptic mayhem that we’ve come to expect. Miller describes the fourth installment as a “105-minute chase scene through the wasteland.”

Check out the trailer below. Also, I just made this photo my computer background image, and you should too.

Marvel has released a new poster for Captain America: The First Avenger. While it’s not as good as the fan-made poster with Captain punching Hitler IN THE FACE, I appreciate the official one’s use of lighting. Did they resurrect Norman Rockwell to do this? With a big enough budget, anything is possible. In the poster, Captain looks like he’s ready to kick some ass. There’s probably a Nazi right off screen giving him the raspberry. So disrespectful.

Check out the poster below, and come back tonight at 7:30E/4:30P to see the new trailer.

I am not excited about Cars 2. The first one was Pixar‘s weakest effort, in my humble opinion, and the trailer for Cars 2 doesn’t lead me to think this outing will be any better. That said, holy f*ck, check out these badass new Cars 2 posters.

The first one’s inspired by classic Bond movies. Now I’m tempted to fashion my Corolla with a giant evil monocle, just to see what would happen. (Answer: probably not much of anything.) The other two posters are part of their “Cars visit other locations in the 60s” series, and they’re beautifully drawn.

Cars 2 races into theaters Jun 24. I’ll wait ’til they make a 2D movie based on these posters. (Cinema Blend)

These days, you can’t have a horror movie without a frightening, possessed child. Has there ever been a horror movie about a spooky orphanage of possessed kids? You know, why am I even asking? There have probably been hundreds.

Here’s the new poster for Insideous by director James Wan (Saw), which is admittedly pretty freaky looking. It’s about “a family [who] tries [to] prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose son in a realm called The Further forever.” Yikes. I hear The Further is, like, one of the worst realms ever. It’s got a pretty lousy review on Yelp.

Check out the poster below, along with some screenshots from the film. We’ve also got the trailer here. This April, get ready to catch your shrieking girlfriend as she cowers in your arms at the theater, then will have “thank god everything’s okay in real life” sex with you when you get home. Five times the car chases. Five times car crashes. Five times the car motion blurs lines.

Below is the new poster for Fast Five, the latest Fast and the Furious movie to run-over the title continuity of the series like so much roadkill. At least the other movies had “furious” in the title. Will this entry be nearly as “furious” as the first four? With Vin Diesel Paul Walker and Dwayne “Smell My Cooking” Johnson returning, all signs point 2 yes.

Another sign of this movie’s furiousity: according to a recent interview with director Justin Lin, they shot all the action sequences practically. So when you see a bunch of trucks crash into a train, those were real trucks, a real train, and the whole thing was really expensive. Those aren’t woosy CG wireframe trucks assembled in the Troniverse.

However, I hear the talking scenes will be processed through the program Actor Effects, so the dramatic moments are smoother and also tolerable. (JoBlo and IGN)

One is a hammer wielding demi-god and the strongest of the Asgardians. The other is the schlubby dude from Knocked Up. Okay, maybe Thor vs The Green Hornet would be a pretty one-sided street fight, but their respective marketing teams have released competitively badass new movie posters. We’re not sure who wins The Battle of Poster Coolness. Only YOU can decide! Or don’t decide and just enjoy them both. That’s the way I’m gonna play it.

First up is The Green Hornet. The film stars Seth Rogen and comes to theaters January 14th. It’s– OMG THAT CAR IS COMING AT ME IN 3D SO I BETTER DUUUUUUUCK!

Second is the broodtastic new French poster for Marvel’s Thor, to be released May 2011. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film stars Chris Hemsworth as the hammer holding hero. In this poster, Thor has just read Albert Camus’ The Stranger and is developing his own thoughts on existentialism:

Releasing one bad-ass poster for True Grit just isn’t enough to appease those Coen Brothers. As the film’s December release draws near, the marketing team is beginning their full press. In addition to the earlier broadsheet, we now have five new posters — four character posters and one group shot. The shots show each character ready to tussle in the name of retribution or have retribution dispensed on them. Collect all five to adorn your moody Western revenge drama themed man cave. They look cool and all, but I’d like to see one for Bear On Horseback. He’s the real star. (via IMDb and Empire)
