Let's go ahead and judge these films the best way we know how - on appearances.

Before you woke up this morning, the Oscar nominees were announced. It would seem that this year, more than other years, there was a pretty big bifurcation between the few widely embraced films and the ones that were nominated for an Oscar. As such, many movie fans might be unfamiliar with a few of the nominees. Well, due to that and the fact that the Academy now enjoys nominating seemingly hundreds of films for Best Picture.

So, for those unfamiliar, here’s a quick rundown of the films jousting for the title of Best Picture. Like the Highlander, there can be only one.

The Artist

The first entry here is by far the most artsy, and perhaps least accessible by wide audiences. It’s a French film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. I’m actively rooting against this film just so I don’t have to type those names throughout March if it wins. The film follows a male film star in the twilight of his career and a female star on the upswing. So it’s kind of like A Star Is Born, which is another film our readers probably haven’t seen.

Anyway, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the film is in black and white. Oh. And it’s largely silent. Content and merit aside, I could see the Academy going for this guy solely to show how damn sophisticated they are.

The Descendants

While it hasn’t made a splash at the box office (many nominees fail to), this Alexander Payne (Election, About Schmidt, Sideways) film has seemed to emerge as “the Oscar shoe-in that the masses are getting on board with.” It stars George Clooney as a laissez faire dad who has to get in touch with his kids in Hawaii after their mother suffers a boating injury and falls into a coma. Like much of Payne’s fare, this film is purported to be drier than a cracker, but the film has managed to nab other nods for both Clooney and Payne, so the powers that be are digging it.

Also, the film has Matthew Lillard in it, which I thought would preclude it from being nominated, but apparently not.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Jonathan Safran Foer wrote this well-received novel in 2005, focusing on one boy’s journey to make sense of his father’s death in the September 11th attacks. The source material’s reception wasn’t as warm as Foer’s previous effort, Everything Is Illuminated, but all the problems with the can be offset by the fact that this film has Tom f*cking Hanks, so the critics can go to hell.

This movie has been divisive, with many critics railing it for its heavy reliance on saccharine subject matter (“Remember 9/11? That sucked!”) and the performance of child star Thomas Horn, who they found to be unlikeable. It sucks to go on a journey with an unlikeable person.

Steve Carell is teaming up with Moneyball director Bennett Miller for the drama Foxcatcher. Based on a true story, Carell will play John du Pont, a multimillionaire whose hobbies include birdwatching, stamp collecting, and being a paranoid schizophrenic. He’s also a big wrestling fan and builds a training facility, called Team Foxcatcher, on the grounds of his estate. He then murders his long-time friend and Olympic wrestling champ under the belief that the combatant was part of an international conspiracy to kill him.

There’s no word yet on casting the ill-fated wrestler David Schultz, but he does strike a remarkable resemblance to John C. Reilly. If I thought it were safe to put he and Carell in a film together without it devolving into silly voices, I’d say he’s perfect for the part. But alas. Just get the Rock.
Step aside, movies released in the past 15 years.

Apparently my theory that people will pay a theoretically infinite amount of money to see The Lion King is one step closer to being proven true: The 3D re-release of a nearly 20-year-old movie (holy god, is The Lion King really 17 years old? Man oh man) is the number one film at the box office for a second-straight weekend. Does this mean Disney is going to extend its originally two-week limited engagement? It’s not known for sure, but when have you known Disney to turn down a buck?

<a class='img' href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/taylor-lautner-still-running-hiding-in-second-abduction-trailer/' title='Taylor Lautner Still Running, Hiding In Second 'Abduction' Trailer'>
Taylor Lautner Still Running, Hiding In Second 'Abduction' Trailer

Anyway, The Lion King managed to hold onto the top spot even though it had the much-buzzed-about Moneyball and Abduction as competition. Of those two, Moneyball did the best, riding an all-star cast to a $20.6 million opening weekend for 2nd place. Abduction didn’t do quite so well, with an $11.2 million opening weekend, putting it in 4th place, right behind Dolphin Tale. The other big movie to open this week, The Killer Elite, made an expendable $9.5 million for fifth place.
Jonah Hill is here to tell you that you CAN buy a championship, Old Timer.

If you want to see some hopelessly pragmatic academics upset a bunch of baseball traditionalists by ripping out the heart, soul, and tradition of the game, then Moneyball is the film for you. Starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (who actually looks like a retired baseball player), Moneyball is the story of the Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane who took a scientific approach to assembling a winning team on a budget. Sort of like Major League if the team had been assembled by MIT grads instead of scruffy Lou Brown.

The trailer does an abrupt heel-turn, going from slapstick to Friday Night Lights-style inspiration. So when you watch this trailer, start by giggling incessantly, but by the end, you’ll have a thousand-yard stare and a solitary tear running down your face. At least I did.

Things get emotional in the 'Moneyball' trailer.

Sony has dropped the trailer for Bennett Miller‘s Moneyball. Based on the book by Michael Lewis, Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, who, with the help on Paul De Podesta (Jonah Hill), used fancy mathematics to help the Oakland A’s not suck. Philip Seymour Hoffman makes an appearance in the trailer as A’s coach Art Howe, but he doesn’t say a damn thing. Was Art Howe a mute, or did he just employ a controversial coaching method?

The film looks like it has all the makings of a sports underdog story. There is laughter, tears, guys being chummy, chairs being thrown, and a slow-motion home run hit. Pitt handles all of these things well, except the homer. He leaves that to the guys with less attractive features.
