I only really post this with the wonderful knowledge that next Christmas, this will probably be a pretty desirable gift on DVD, considering it’s a Disney film about sports. It also has a name that’s very similar to a Clint Eastwood heartbreaker about greedy families and euthanasia.

So some clueless aunt or geriatric grandfather will pick up Million Dollar Baby for their nephew or whatever who just started little league, and they’ll have to watch Hilary Swank bang her head on a stool, then be essentially put to death in a hospital.

And all they will have wanted to is watch Jon Hamm overcome cultural differences in India, then win the World Series or something.

With the end in sight for Mad Men after next season, Jon Hamm must look onward and upward. And no film career would be complete without a family-friendly sports triumph, a la The Rookie. Well, this one’s gonna be called Million Dollar Arm, and it stars Hamm as a baseball scout who hosts a competition in India to find a promising prospect for Major League Baseball.

The film is based on the true story of two Indian players who were signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates (spoiler alert: with limited success). The film hits theaters May 14th, so if you have a five year-old, they’ll be mature enough to see this movie in nine months, so that works out pretty well for ya.

Tom McCarthy’s Win Win got a lot of buzz at Sundance, and now he’s working on a new project, writing the script for Million Dollar Arm. Now, I assumed this was a movie in the “Six-Million Dollar Man” mold about a guy with a million-dollar robot arm, perhaps one that could fire lasers. The truth isn’t anywhere near as exciting, though: It’s “based on the story of sports agent J.B. Bernstein who found two professional pitchers through an Indian reality TV show.”

Wait, Indian reality TV show? Perhaps McCarthy could find a way to incorporate the Indian Terminator. Pretty sure that guy’s arm costs more than a million dollars, though. (via SlashFilm)
