The show, so far untitled, has a murderer’s row of comedians, including T.J. Miller, Thomas Middleditch, Josh Brener, Lindsey Broad, Christopher Evan Welch, Amanda Crew, Angela Trimbur, ZachWoods and Kumail Nanjiani. But those guys will be pretty funny!

The tagline that has been bandied about here is “the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success.” Ugh. That describes every Aaron Sorkin project ever. Of course, it’s Mike Judge, so we needn’t worry.

You know, staplers, and whatnot.

With so many excellent episodes under their belt, it’s hard to choose a favorite, but here are my picks. Kick back and enjoy. There’s enough boobs, butts, and bloodshed here for everybody.

Customers Suck – Episode 03

As anyone who has ever worked in retail or food service knows, customers truly suck. Much like the deli scene in The Wrestler, this episode of Beavis and Butthead captures this phenomenon perfectly. Look at the way they keep showing up and wanting things. Dillholes.

1-900-Beavis – Episode 70

Commercials for 900 numbers ruled the airwaves in the days before Internet porn. It was big industry. Naturally, Beavis and Butthead wanted to get in on this. The show also adeptly points out that the hotties on the other end of the line are likely hulking bus drivers.

Top O’ The Mountain – Episode 110

Seeing a real living boob as a teenager can be as difficult and gratifying as climbing Everest itself. If not more. Beavis and Butthead went to great lengths to see the top of the mountain. The journey was good.

The safe word is “Lady Bird.”

There was still so much more to discuss though. Judge had said that he’s having Beavis and Butt-Head review movies, Siskel and Ebert style. We saw clips of a fat Beavis and Butt-Head, old Beavis and Butt-Head on scooters, and of course the great “Holy Cornholio” episode shown at Comic-Con.

MTV held a cocktail party poolside in Beverly Hills with the stars of their summer and fall line-up. When Judge saw me, he knew I was the guy with lots of Beavis and Butt-Head questions, so this time he indulged me at length.

Q: What movies are you having Beavis and Butt-Head review?

Mike Judge: So far I’ve just done one, Human Centipede.

Q: Oh my God, that’s perfect!

MJ: Yeah, when I saw it, in fact that gave me the idea, I’ve got to have Beavis and Butt-Head review this. That’s the only one I’ve done so far and one of the things I have them do after they show a clip of the movie is I have them talking about how there’s going to be a Sex and the City 3, why don’t they combine it with a Human Centipede sequel and just have those girls all get lost in the forest, the doctor strings them all together and you get two sequels in one. Since I’ve done that, now there is a sequel to Human Centipede. It’ll still play hopefully. That’s part of the reason we’re waiting is we want to do a movie that’s just coming out. We have this animated set of them on a Siskel and Ebert like set.

Q: Are there studios that would let you see a rough cut to start writing and time it to a release of a movie?

MJ: Yeah, we’ve talked about doing that. Luckily, with that kind of stuff, it’s what we call repurposing, same with the videos. So it’s a little quicker turnaround.

Q: Would a mainstream studio allow you to Beavis and Butt-Head one of their films?

MJ: Yeah, they would but as far as putting it on DVD down the road, probably not. I think you have to go to the actors and stuff like that to do it.

Q: Well, you’re part of the Paramount family. You could at least coordinate with them.

MJ: Yeah, I think we’re going to do it for some. If it doesn’t end up being sellable on DVD and Netlflix then we’ll just do it for the time being just for fun.

Q: I love the “Holy Cornholio” episode. Did you ever think you’d bring spiritual depth to that character?

MJ: No, that started out very small, just going off on a tangent, just being goofy and then building on it and building on it. I got this really great feedback before it aired, just from people who worked on the show, just when I would say the name, it doesn’t mean anything. But then I started thinking of just making it sound more and more grand even though it’s this stupid little thing.

Q: The fat animation is hilarious, but I always wondered, they eat nachos all the time anyway. How are they so skinny?

MJ: That’s a good question. I spent a lot of time going back and forth on those drawings of them fat. Because of what you just mentioned, they’re eating crap all the time anyway but I just figured maybe if they’re really trying, because they think they’re going to get laid, then they’ll eat way more than usual and gorge themselves beyond what they normally would do. It was a fine line. When you make them fat, they automatically look old. If it’s baby fat, it looks too cute. I just wanted to come up with something that looked funny and I think they have a funny look.

Q: Is there an episode where they’re old and on scooters?

MJ: Yeah, it’s a short bit at the end of an episode. That’s another thing I want to do more of. That’s at the end of an episode. I’m thinking of doing an entire episode where they’re in their late ‘80s. I can always imagine them being in their teens and in their ‘80s but in between is tough for me.

Q: The best part of the video segments was when they had random conversations. My favorite was when Beavis started making pancakes. Can you still do that this time?

MJ: Oh yeah, quite a bit. I still do a lot of that. What’s kind of new and where I really felt like I hit a stride with this one and got a bunch of new information was having them watch Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant. I’d never had them watch shows with dialogue before. I just decided to play it like they’ve just seen every episode, because I have teenage daughters so I became very familiar with it. Also I gotta admit oddly and modestly, I got a little hooked on it myself. That was a new thing but then a couple of those, they just talk about whatever. So yeah, I still do that.

Q: Could there be another movie at some point?

MJ: Yeah, I guess so. I feel like I have a couple pretty good movie ideas that I’ve saved. I was going to maybe do two parter TV episodes but I ended up not.

We know now that Beavis and Butt-Head will watch and give commentary on shows like Jersey Shore, 16 And Pregnant, UFC fights and internet viral videos. Judge promised some movie reviews too. “We got a little thing where they’re kind of like Siskel and Ebert reviewing a movie,” Judge said.

Judge actually tried branching out from music videos in the original series, but it didn’t work until MTV’s latest crop of reality TV. “We tried The Real World back in the day and for some reason it didn’t click. I watched a lot of Jersey Shore and now I’m hooked on it. It really clicked. It was just paydirt, 16 and Pregnant and all this.”

Judge promised they would also still watch music videos. With October 27 still months away, there’s time to work out the deals. They’re still waiting on Lady Gaga, but have the following confirmed. “Let’s see, Deadmaus. Yolanda B Cool. MGMT, T Baby It’s So Cold in the D. YouTube that.”

These videos will all be on the eventual DVD sets too. “That’s the other thing. The original run, the videos were only cleared for MTV so that’s why it’s very hard to get those on DVD. Now they’re going to be all cleared for everything.”

Beavis and Butt-Head are no longer hand drawn cell animation, but Judge made sure they look the same. “I think the digital process has gotten a lot better. Beavis and Butt-Head still look crappy. I’m using the same model sheets but ‘look better’ in the way I think looks better. It’s Hi-def but there are a lot of differences. To me it still feels like them to fans.”

Unfortunately, Judge confirmed, they have still never scored. Here’s hopin’.

“I felt like there was a whole crop of new artists — and what the world sorely missed was the point of view that only Beavis and Butt-Head could bring. They’ll be self-contained segments with the boys in different situations like they used to be. But this time around, they’ll watch”Jersey Shore,” UFC matches and user-generated videos from YouTube, in addition to music videos.” All of the programming will be displayed on the duo’s TV, even if it comes from YouTube — “like silly videos of cats playing music.”

So, they have Apple TV? How the hell’d they figure out how to set that up and I still can’t. I guess I need like a different cable or something.

“It will be much more viral this time around. We’re going to plant seeds of the characters throughout social-media networks like Face­book and Twitter, in addition to traditional programming on television and, potentially, in theaters. It’s formatted very well for the Internet because it’s short-form.”

I’m glad to see the show returning. Even if it is just a vehicle to see Butthead with Pauly D‘s shape-up and Beavis with Snooki‘s poof.

This isn’t much of a surprise, given Mike Judge made his intentions to resurrect the show last July. Since MTV doesn’t play videos anymore, Judge might have to find a new way to easily knock out 60% of the show’s run time. Maybe he’ll adopt a “Mystery Science Theater 3000″ approach this time around, having them comment on cheesy movies. Or in a meta twist, he could have them watching MTV’s lineup of reality programs, offering up commentaries on the”Jersey Shore” and “Real World.” Or maybe it will be YouTube videos. Don’t cost nuthin’.

Their return begs a host of other questions as well. Will the two be the same age? Will Mr. Anderson be returning, or does the use of his likeness in “King of the Hill” preclude Judge from re-introducing him? But the biggest question will be: Will fans of the original be able to enjoy, or even tolerate these characters 17 years later?

Good news. It looks like the monkeyslaps at MTV will show music videos again. Of course, they will be packaged with commentary from Beavis and Butthead. The deals aren’t in place yet, but Mike Judge is planning on bringing the buttmunches out of retirement for a new set of 30 adventures. If picked up, the show will stick to its former format of sketch-videos-sketch with the focus being on more contemporary artists. In other words, there will be heated debate on who has the bigger schlong, Beavis or Lady Gaga. Smart money’s on Gaga. (JoBlo)

After the promising SOLOMON KANE presentation in Hall H, the crowd at Comic-Con was buzzing for geek legend Mike Judge to make a return to his OFFICE SPACE form with his latest flick EXTRACT.  He was joined on stage by cast members Jason Bateman and Mila Kunis, as well.  Comedienne du jour Kristen Wiig could not make it because of filming commitments in New Mexico.  To Bateman’s credit, he was running on an hour’s worth of sleep, having just wrapped on the same shoot at 5am, which, it’s safe to say, is Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Greg Mottola‘s alien comed PAUL…

If you haven’t seen the trailer for EXTRACT, the basic setup is this: Joel (Bateman) owns and operates an extract factory.  He’s depressed, thinks his wife (Kristen Wiig) is cheating on him, and on top of it all, a worker named Step (Clifton Collins Jr.) has his nut taken off in a freak mechanical accident.

The panel jumped right into a clip from the film, which was a scene in which Cindy (Kunis) a new temp at the Extract factory that Joel owns and operates, is shown around by JK Simmons‘s character.  Simmons is his usual funny self, playing a slightly lecherous manager who introduces CIndy to Joel. Afterwards, we see Joel and Cindy chat in his office for the first time, and we learn that Cindy is actually a grifter, who’s only looking to get close to Step so she can take all that workman’s comp money he’s owed.  And there’s not too much of a commitment on her part: the man’s got no nuts.

The scene ends with Joel’s buddy Dean (Ben Affleck) coming into the room as Cindy leaves, and the two friends doing the whole "Cindy’s a temp – She’s a TRAMP?!" bit from the trailer.  At this point, it was solid stuff: authentic comedy that didn’t try too hard.  Classic Mike Judge tone, but not gut-bustingly hilarious just yet.

The panelists weren’t much for talk, so they quickly jumped right into a second clip, which featured Joel and Dean hiring a dumber-than-dirt gigolo named Brad (Dustin Milligan) to sleep with Joel’s wife in order to prove that she’s willing to cheat on him.  The scene’s setup saw Dean feeding Joel a horse tranquilizer by accident (he thought it was Xanax), which made the whole conversation with the gigolo satisfyingly awkward.  After the clip, Judge informed the crowd that a huge chunk of the scene was missing from the reel somehow.  No one seemed to care too much, except for the moderator from MTV, who joked, "Someone’s getting fired!"  Yeah… my guess is that someone actually did get fired for it, which sort of took the sails out of that joke…

Said Bateman about Judge’s brand of comedy, "What makes Mike laugh is what a lot of my bosses [other directors?] laugh.  He will blow a guy’s balls off, but he’ll draw the line."  He also laid out his mentality for taking the job. "Not often do actors get the chance to do something that they themselves would watch.  We like to eat too.  This is one of those dream jobs.  It’s something I really like and am really proud of."

They can certainly be proud of the final clip, which was easily the crowd’s favorite.  In it, Joel calls Brad the gigolo and listens to him recount his attempt to seduce Joel’s wife.  While his story isn’t embellished, Judge’s visual presentation of it is, complete with a pro mist filter that makes it look like Happy Gilmore’s fantasy world.  Bateman plays the cuckold very well, and the moment in which Brad reveals how pleased he was with himself for having offered to rub sunscreen on the wife’s back in order to seduce her is classic.

The jury is still out on Judge’s next project, but the strength of his previous work was enough to get me to check out the film.  After the panel, I rushed upstairs to check in for the roundtable interviews with Mike Judge, only to be offered a chance to stand in the TV line and do 1:1 interviews. And I took it.

In the end, it was a mistake on my part.  I didn’t know that Mr. Judge would only be doing the roundtables, so let me apologize to my Twitter subscribers that tweeted questions for him.  (Maybe we can work something out later.) 

Outside in the TV line, I had to compete with the big guns like ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT and EXTRA.  Sadly, we were far down the receiving line for Bateman & Kunis, and had to squeeze into a group interview.  Note to self: When offered a TV line next time, either have a four-person crew with you or don’t attend.  Case in point: here’s some crappy video I took of Bateman (with Kunis fighting sleep while answering questions being shouted at him by about five different outlets:

It’s at least a bit of an indication as to how big a media circus Comic-Con has become, and it’s a testament to Bateman’s professionalism for having even shown up for the cameras after the panel in Hall H. 

All of us at Screen Junkies hope EXTRACT brings its A-game to theaters on September 4th, 2009.  Then Bateman can sleep easy.
