When an evil, “blackhat” hacker starts typing bad words into a computer that hurt the financial markets, the only man who can stop him or her or them is Chris Hemsworth. Currently sentenced to fifteen years in prison for hacking, the brilliant, handsome, athletic computer nerd agrees to help track down the malicious threat to our safety and privacy. Michael Mann’s cyber-thriller seems to be taking itself pretty seriously, and while it opens in January 2015, there are rumors that it may open sooner for an Oscar-qualifying limited release.

I’m torn. I can’t tell if it looks good or forgettable. They’re going to need to include a scene where a Ferrari hacks into an airplane if they want to hold my attention.

While he waits around for Steven Spielberg to clear awards season and want to play with giant robots again, Chris Hemsworth has found a new way to prove he hates computers. All kinds.

He’s now set to star in an untitled thriller for Michael Mann that will also involve technology somehow. According to Variety, “plot details are unknown, other than that the film takes place in a world of cyber threats and attacks.” My money has him fighting to stop a mutated version of the Y2K Bug before it leaves us all in the dark. I also predict there will be a scene where Chris Hemsworth will deliver the line, “Upload this,” before stabbing the lead hacker bad guy in the neck with a USB dongle then lifting him above his head and throwing him down into the whirling machinery of the giant super computer. Should Michael Mann decide to not take the film in that direction, I’m wore than willing and available to get cracking on that script.

Director Michael Mann is no stranger to exciting true life stories – he did Public Enemies, about the career of and hunt for bank robber John Dillinger, The Insider, about the fight against Big Tobacco, and The Last of the Mohicans, about the last of the Mohicans. Now he’s attached to another hopefully-exciting true story called Go Like Hell:

“Based on the book by A.J. Baime, story follows Henry Ford II — with the help of young automotive whiz Lee Iacocca and racing maven Carroll Shelby — as they set about reinventing the Ford Motor Co. by entering the high-stakes world of European car racing. In a handful of years they would develop the Ford GT40 (one of the most celebrated cars in automotive history) and become the first Americans to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “

Michael Mann Shares A Grizzled First Look At HBO’s ‘Luck’

The idea of Michael Mann directing Le Mans racing action is enough to make me proverbially salivate. Actually, I might be literally salivating too. No information on casting, except for the rumor that Brad Pitt has been considered as the lead (Henry Ford II?). Hopefully, this will get made – Mann is just the person to handle this type of story. David Milch and Michael Mann are both known for having strict and unyielding creative visions – Milch as the creator of TV shows like “Deadwood,” and Michael Mann as the director of films like Public Enemies and Heat. So it’s been a tough partnership on their newest project, the HBO series “Luck,” about the world of horse racing. Here’s a joint statement from the two of them (too bad it’s not 4/20, I could make a pretty funny joke about the phrase “joint statement”):

“We decided — as two men who have been around for a number of years — we ought to be smart enough to figure out a mechanism that would enable us to work together to our and the series’ benefit. And we did.”

The nature of that mechanism is that Milch has final say on the scripting of the show, while Mann has final say on everything else. Is it me or did Milch kind of get the short end of the stick there? Oh well, I guess that’s why he’s in television and Mann is in movies. (Vulture)

Luck – In Production – Watch more Funny Videos

If you’re a fan of HBO’s “Deadwood” you have reason to open the peaches. Here’s a first look at “Luck,” the new HBO series from “Deadwood” writer David Milch and Heat director Michael Mann. The horse racing drama stars Dustin Hoffman as an organized crime kingpin with a penchant for kicking over tables, and Nick Nolte gets his twelfth shot at career redemption in the role of a broken-down Kentucky horse trainer given a second chance at redemption.

Anyway, it looks great. Particularly the horse-racing scenes. The crew have found really inventive ways to get up in the action. Finally, we can feel the thrill of being a jockey without having to suffer the ridicule of being four-feet tall.

Paul Haggis And Michael Mann Attempt To Take Gold Prospectors Seriously http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/paul-haggis-and-michael-mann-attempt-to-take-gold-prospectors-seriously/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/paul-haggis-and-michael-mann-attempt-to-take-gold-prospectors-seriously/#comments Wed, 13 Apr 2011 03:10:56 +0000 Geoffrey Golden http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=206805 Michael Mann and Paul Haggis have gone crazy with gold fever, because they're packaging a movie called 'Gold' as a possible directing vehicle for Mann.

Somewhere along the line, grizzled old prospectors became a hilarious comedy archetype, along with potheads and snooty English butlers. They had crazy beards, crazy slang (“that tool nipper’s a real cackler, dagnabbit.”) and were always on a crazy pursuit for gold. Now Michael Mann and Paul Haggis have gone crazy with gold fever, because they’re packaging a movie called – what else? – Gold as a possible directing vehicle for Mann. The film is supposedly similar to 1948′s The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Haggis discovered the spec script from “Friday Night Lights” scribes Patrick Massett and John Zinman, but since he’s busy flipping off Scientology, Haggis passed the screenplay onto Mann. The two of them will produce, along with Michael Nozik. Currently, there are no actors attached, but any big city actor-folk who wanna join these muckmen for a buzzard dollar will be greeted at camp by a stomachlobber serving ‘em up a plate of beans. That’s mining talk for something. (Hollywood Reporter)

The Mann best known for directing Heat has a gangster movie he needs to turn out better than Public Enemies. He’s hired Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air) to write the script about Chicago mobsters Tony “Big Tuna” Accardo and Sam Giancana. No studio has come on board Big Tuna yet. Mann landed Turner by paying him his seven-figure fee from his own development fund. No wonder the guy is smiling like a damn idiot.

Turner will work on Big Tuna as he preps his directorial debut on the revenge drama By Virtue Fall, in which Colin Farrell and Eric Bana are attached to star. Just keep Farrell away from the new Mann project. He’ll want to grow his hair out again and spend half the film asking for Bacardi mojitos. We get it! It’s Miami! (Variety)
