With all the build up after close to a decade off the air, the return of Arrested Development was a much-ballyhooed event that largely failed to live up to the hype. The “one character per episode” focus made everything seem pretty disjointed, and getting the cast in the same room seemed to be a lot more important than people expected.

So we’ll mercifully try it again, because even bad AD is better than no AD. Netflix president Ted Sarandos told USA Today that he’s “positive” the show’s going to return. That pop you just heard was the casting director’s head exploding trying to figure out how the hell everyone’s schedules will fit. Again.

Netflix had recentlyvoiced their desire for more episodes, so maybe this is Theodore’s way of making a self-sfulfilling prophecy. Michael Cera’s just his weak little pawn.

No word on premise yet, but it’ll probably revolve around the whole family just running around, being dicks to one another.

“If it ain’t broke…,” ya know?

The post 7 Reasons You Should Rewatch ‘This Is The End’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

The end is nigh. Well, the end was nigh, then the end went away. But now it’s nigh again.

In case you didn’t pick up on that very clear message, This Is The End is coming back to theaters this weekend, and if you’ve seen it, be ready to get back in the theater again. (And if you haven’t seen it, please do so immediately so that you won’t find the title and subject matter of this article so alienating and distant.)

Having seen the movie, and thus been granted the benefit of hindsight, I assure you there are far more than seven reasons to see or re-see this film. I don’t address them all, not because I get off on withholding, but because there’s a pretty good chance that you’re reading this having not seen the movie. And considering this entire missive is an effort to get you to see the movie, let’s not reveal everything, no? It’s a high wire act, but if anyone is equal to the task, it’s you, dear reader.

7. The Soundtrack

Who wouldn’t want to revisit Cypress Hill, Psy, Backstreet Boys, Whitney Houston, Dr. Dre, and M.I.A.? A crazy person, that’s who. The movie essentially starts with a party then takes a macabre twist, but let’s focus on the party. These jams, except maybe for Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You” are party regulars. You could stand to check back in on them.

6. The Cameos (Except Michael Cera, Who Gets His Own Entry)

There are a lot, and it doesn’t really spoil anything to share who they are. Some stick around longer than others, but the list includes, but is not limited to: Michael Cera, Mintz-Plasse, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Martin Starr, Aziz Ansari, Kevin Hart, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, and David Krumholtz.

5. The “Characters”

As you probably know, this film is brimming with that familiar Apatow clan, who play themselves. Whether or not they’re actually playing themselves in name only, or if they’re taking on affectations varies from person to person, but it’s a nice little subconscious game to figure out if the guy you’re staring at on the screen is really as hard/nice/goofy as the “character” seems.

4. The Fake Pineapple Express Sequel

Argh. It’s so frustrating when you want to talk about something hilarious but you don’t want to spoil it. It’s like buying someone an awesome Christmas (OR HANUKKAH) gift in July then having to sit on it. Seriously. Just everyone see the movie so we don’t have to dance around these issues, and we can really just…just open a dialog.

3. Marijuana Can Make Repeating The Same Activity Feel New Again

You know, if you are in a state with decriminalized pot or, failing that, medicinal marijuana and you happen to suffer from a treatable affliction. I don’t think it’s giving away a major plot point to say that Seth Rogen, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel, and Danny McBride partake a little bit in the film. Why should they get to have all the fun?

2. Really Dissect Their Idea Of Heaven

Yet again, I must spare the newbies the details, as it’s a pretty great bow on the story. It looks very stark, very white, and very comfortable, but the soundtrack might ruffle a few feathers. Like, everyone’s feathers. Everywhere on their body.

1. Michael Cera!!!!

To say he “plays against type” is an understatement. His turn pretty much takes the film up an entire level with a modicum of screen time. Imagine if you rewatched Wall Street and saw Zack Galifianakis make a brief appearance as Gordon Gekko’s attorney. You get the gist.

The post Who Will Take Dick Clark’s Title Of World’s Oldest Teenager appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
America and the world lost 82 year-old Dick Clark yesterday to a heart attack, which means that the title of “the world’s oldest teenager,” is now up for grabs. Clark made a name for himself by bridging generational gaps through American Bandstand and New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. The $100,000 Pyramid, not so much.

With Clark’s death, the claim to “world’s oldest teenager” is up in the air, and there is no shortage of celebs to take the title. So, let’s reflect fondly on Clark’s youthful exuberance during all stages of his life, acknowledge his contributions in ushering in a type of music that, without him, would have been marginalized for many more years, seeing off artists as diverse as Buddy Holly, Madonna, and Run DMC. That, my friends, is what we in the industry call “tenure.”

However, tomorrow brings a new day in which many, many, many celebs, deserving and otherwise will attempt to win the hearts and minds of America on their crusade to become the new “world’s oldest teenager.”

Ryan Seacrest

Seacrest has pretty much has followed the Dick Clark playbook since the beginning of his career, establishing footholds in singing competitions, radio programs, and of course, New Year’s Eve specials. It could be argued that this “kid” has been groomed to take Dick Clark’s place for quite some time now. He also looks like a teenager that has suffered an accident in a tanning factory. (Tanning leather, not skin. Actually, wait. Both.)

However, this choice is a little “on the nose.” I feel that the title of World’s Oldest Teenager shouldn’t be something you’re groomed for. It should be something that you effortlessly slide in to. I also don’t think that Ryan Seacrest is the guy that the kids go crazy for. Rather, I think he’s the guy that middle-aged people go crazy for because they think he’s the guy that kids go crazy for. It’s all very complicated, but I’m gonna put him at:

Jonah Hlll

For the past ten years, the now-28-year-old Hill has been playing teenagers, and with the success of both Superbad and the more recent 21 Jump Street adaptation, there’s little sign of him slowing down on this front. I realize that in 21 Jump Street, he was playing a high school graduate who became a cop who became a high school student again, but in my book, that means he actually played TWO teenagers in this film. How long can he keep it up? Probably not long. With the weight loss, Hill is starting to take on a bizarre appearance that I don’t think anyone would ever confuse with “youthful.” He’s got it right now, but looking down the road, I don’t see him existing in this space for very long.

While we’re at it….

Somebody called me on the phone. He said “Hey, did you hear about the Arrested Development reunion?” I was pretty stoked, because after Fishbone, they were my favorite band at Lollapalooza in 1993. Then he told me it wasn’t the hip-hop group, it was that TV show with all the rich white folks on it.

Click here for the cast’s most embarrassing roles since leaving the show.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Arrested Development. I’ve watched the entire series repeatedly. I choked up a little when Fox finally gave it the axe. It was easily the best sitcom in television history until Party Down came along and provided some stiff competition. Talking about The Seaward, hot cops, and Mr. Bananagrabber brings an instant smile to my face, if not a minor titter and yet… I’m a little underwhelmed by the return of the show.

Trying to recreate Arrested Development is like trying to capture lightning in a bottle. I’m sure people were pretty amped when Aerosmith got back together, and then they dropped Permanent Vacation and the Armageddon soundtrack, a couple of stiff kicks to the balls. I mean, take a minute to step back from your irrational exuberance and ask yourself: How many band break up, get back together and make good records?

See?

I’m not saying the new shows and movie won’t be funny. They probably would be if I had never heard of Arrested Development. But expectations kill and momentum means something in comedy. Michael Cera isn’t cute little awkward George Michael anymore, he’s Michael Fucking Cera, the douche who’s made a career out of playing irritating, twee “male” versions of the manic pixie dream girl, minus the mania and god dammit, he wouldn’t even take his picture with me and my friends at a bowling alley in Koreatown even though I’m pretty sure he didn’t even know we were just trying to clown on him.

It’s not just prancing Michael Cera and his red wool cap, either. Has anyone noticed how lame Will Arnett has gotten? The sex tape was great. I even liked Let’s Go To Prison. But now he’s on some TV show about trying to stay cool while raising a fucking baby? Isn’t he about fifteen years too old to star on a show like that? More to the point, isn’t that show for the type of people who post pictures of themselves holding up diapers soiled in unnatural colors while smiling and making “oopsie” faces, AKA the type of people who make you want to kill all parents instead of becoming one?

I saw Alia Shawkat on some Lifetime movie and apparently she appears in Best Coast videos. I don’t think I really need to go on with this one.

Point is: The show was great in its time, but there’s a pretty good chance that time has passed away, along with the blissful innocence of the Bush years. America has new anxieties, irritants and pathologies to explore and exploit for comic potential now. Today, Arrested Development is about as relevant as M*A*S*H.

Arrested Development helped propel many of its cast members to stardom and paved the way for exciting new work opportunities. But every project can’t be as original and hilarious as the groundbreaking comedy series. And whether it be for art or commerce, cast members have had to take on a few roles in lesser projects since the sitcom’s demise.

Here’s a rundown of the cast’s most embarrassing post-Arrested Development projects.

Jason Bateman – The Ex

Jason Bateman kicked off his career of appearing in every comedy known to man with a co-starring role in The Ex. Here he plays the wheelchair-bound tormentor to Zack Braff, who believes Bateman has designs on his wife. This also kicks off the beginning of Bateman’s raunchy, gross out comedy. I like the part where he falls down.

Michael Cera- Paper Heart

The pseudo-documentary/hipster fart smell-a-thon Paper Heart helped transform Michael Cera from the awkward teen on Arrested Development to awkward teen in everything. Now a household name, Cera has taken roles in some pretty interesting projects… interesting in the aspect that people somehow enjoy them.

Could it be true? Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz announced yesterday that the comedy will return to television for a nine or ten episode run as a lead-in for the maybe-finally-happening Arrested Development movie. Hurwitz made the announcement at The New Yorker Festival, where the entire cast was reunited for the first time since the show’s 2005 cancellation.

Click here to see the cast’s most embarrassing roles since”Arrested Development” was canceled.

“[I] found that as time went by, there was so much more to the story. In fact, where everyone’s been for five years became a big part of the story,” said Hurwitz. “So in working on the screenplay, I found even if I just gave five minutes per character to that back story, we were halfway through the movie before the characters got together.”

The plan is to focus each of the new episodes on a different member of the Bluth family, which Jason Bateman confirmed via his Twitter page. “It’s true,” Bateman wrote. “We will do 10 episodes and the movie. Probably shoot them all together next summer for a release in early ’13. VERY excited!”

There’s no word yet on where the new series will air, though Showtime and Netflix have both shown strong interest. Sounds good, just as long as they don’t air on Fox. The network would only show three episodes back-to-back on a Friday night opposite the Olympics before cancellation. (NY Times)

The post 7 Movie Parents Who Should Lose Their Kids To Child Services appeared first on Screen Junkies.

If you thought your parents were bad (and they are horrible), then you’ll feel a little better after you review this list of bad movie parents. Unless your parents abused you physically or sexually. If that’s the case, it’s unlikely that anything on this website will make you feel good after suffering that horrible ordeal. But everyone else is golden.

While there are no shortage of mean parents portrayed in film, this list focuses on those that are woefully ignorant or oblivious to the point of being negligent. These well-meaning, but unfit parents are just as guilty as those who beat or scream at their children.

Yes, that means you, Rick Moranis.

7. Juno and Paulie – Juno

I understand that it’s not commonplace to remove a baby from the custody of its parents before they’ve actually done something wrong, but this baby needs to be saved as soon as possible. Could you imagine how damaged a child raised by Juno and Michael Cera would be? It would be unable to function in society. Juno would probably feed it “ironic baby formula,” while Cera mumbles under his breath, “I don’t know if that’s the right way to feed a child.”

Imagine the baby is in elementary school. An intruder breaks into the house, but the child isn’t able to call 911 because the phone is a goddamned hamburger. Phones should be phones. Hamburgers should be food. You can’t endanger your child in the name of quirk. That’s in the constitution. Look it up.

6. Jim’s Dad – American Pie

My only decent parallel here in Dexter and his dad. Dexter’s dad saw that his son was on an unmistakable path to become a serial killer, and he acted for the good of his son and society at large.

Jim’s Dad (Eugene Levy) comes home to witness his son fucking a pie, and doesn’t act. Sure he has an uncomfortable conversation about dirty magazines, but he fails to set parameters for Jim’s sickness. Today it’s pies, and tomorrow it’s German Shepherd, then next week it’s the Andrews boy down the block. It’s disgusting.

Summer Movies Like “American Pie” http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/genres-movies/comedies/summer-movies-like-american-pie/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/genres-movies/comedies/summer-movies-like-american-pie/#comments Fri, 08 Jul 2011 17:48:22 +0000 Breakstudios http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=219501 If you look hard enough, you can find few summer movies that will appease your need to laugh at the misfortunes of teenagers.

The post Summer Movies Like “American Pie” appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Summer movies like American Pie are not terribly easy to come by. This is probably because raunchy teen comedies aren’t usually commercially successful enough to qualify as summer blockbusters like American Pie did. But that doesn’t stop the studios from trying, which means that if you look hard enough, you can find few that will appease your need to laugh at the misfortunes of teenagers. We all need to beat the heat somehow right?

The American Pie sequels

It may seem obvious, but the best way to get your fix of summer movies like American Pie is to go straight to the source. That is, check out the sequels. Both of the sequels in the “official series,” American Pie 2 and American Wedding, have the same sensibility as the first American Pie movie (duh), and they were released in the summer too. Why settle for an imitation when you can get authentic-Jason-Biggs-sexually-humiliating-himself action?

Clueless

Alicia Silverstone getting mugged in Clueless

While it may not have the same level of raunchiness as American Pie, Clueless qualifies due to their similarly comedic approaches to life as an American teenager. If you’re looking for scenes of apple pies getting penetrated, look elsewhere. But if you just want to laugh at teenagers in a sunny outdoor milieu—i.e. teenagers being stupid in Southern California—you’ve come to the right place!

Bring It On

Kirsten Dunst's "naked" dream in Bring It On

Hey, not all summer movies like American Pie are masterpieces. But Bring It On is high school movie that came out in the summer—what else do you want? Bring It On is a little more by-the-book than American Pie, focusing on a climactic cheer leading competition and all, but it still shares a certain sensibility with it—which is again, laughing at teenagers as they struggle with their “problems”. It also follows in the grand American Pie tradition of having a ton of direct-to-video sequels that have almost nothing to do with the original. Not to mention, it features Hottie McHotkins (AKA Eliza Dusku) and Kirsten Dunst back when she was still cute.

Superbad

McLovin' dancing in Superbad

Finally, a summer movie like American Pie that actually comes close to matching its raunchiness factor. In the language-and-crudely-drawn-penises department, anyway. Its plot, involving two teenagers on a mad quest to get laid makes it similar to American Pie, and as an added bonus, most would agree that Superbad is a funnier, better, and more authentic depiction of teenage life than American Pie. So what we’re really trying to say is that what you should be looking for is “summer movies like Superbad.”

The House Bunny

Girls post makeover in House Bunny

If this list is any indication, a good chunk of summer movies like American Pie are targeted at the fairer sex. The House Bunny is no different, featuring Anna Farris as a former Playboy bunny who becomes a sorority house mother. And unlike a lot of teen  comedies, it actually got a fair amount of critical praise, albeit praise that singled out Anna Farris’ performance as being somewhat too good for the material. Still, it counts.

Your search for summer movies like American Pie might last until your dying breath, but this list should make your quest a little easier. If nothing else, the movies on this list will make remembering YOUR awkward teenage years that much easier/funnier. And if you’re still in your teenage years now, uh, sorry?

A number of cities were vying to host Comic-Con last year, but Springfield really should have been in the running. Nerdy celebrities seem drawn to the town like jocks to an obnoxious geek with stretchy underwear. Recent examples include the Flight of the Concords duo, Seth Rogen, Ira Glass, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and regular pal around Stephen Hawking. Well, add another nerd to the nerd pile (which is next to Springfield’s flaming tire pile): Michael Cera.

7 photos‘The Simpsons’ Porn Might Make You Jaundice

Cera will guest star on the next season of “The Simpsons” as a seemingly splendid love interest for Lisa. He’ll play a boy named Nick in an episode called “The Daughter Also Rises,” not “Nick and Lisa’s Infinite Playtime” or something similar. Here’s what Executive Producer Al Jean says about the episode:

“He starts quoting Hemingway and she says, ‘You’re not a product of the Springfield public schools, are you?’ And he goes, ‘No, I come to Springfield for the food and the women,’” says executive producer Al Jean. “So he talks a good game. [But] she starts to realize that he’s less than expected.”

A new kid in Springfield who’s as smart as Lisa? I don’t believe it, or at least I wouldn’t, if I hadn’t seen it many, many times before. Ah well, I imagine it’s hard for a show that’s been on for over 20 seasons, which begins each episode with a boy writing the same thing on a chalkboard multiple times, to not repeat itself. (EW)

“Pic revolves around a girl vacationing with her friends in a remote area of Chile who slowly starts losing her mental faculties.”

Maybe she goes crazy and imagines she’s a bunch of miners trapped underground. Anyway, we don’t know which of these is going to play the lead yet, although whoever it is will have to share the spotlight with Michael Cera’s megawatt star-power. Actually, I guess they all have to do that. (Variety)

Michael Cera is in a new indie movie. Is your head trembling, unable to process that shocking news? Well, before your brain explodes, here’s some more information:

Cera will star in Magic, Magic, an indie thriller about a group of friends on vacation to a quiet part of Chile. One of the girls loses her mind, and for some reason, all her friends ignore her. Actually, I guess that makes sense. There’s a lot to do in remote Chile. You can go to the beach, hang out with your friends, ignore the one friend you obviously shouldn’t. Anyway, no word yet on Cera’s role, but it’s sure to be a very different film from box office ba-bomb Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. For one thing, I assume Magic, Magic‘s use of video game iconography and the music from “Seinfeld” will be somewhat more modest.

If your brain just exploded, please use a cloth to wipe up the screen for the next person. Help keep this computer lab clean. (Variety)

Can he?

In his short career, Michael Cera has been habitually taken to task for playing “Michael Cera” in virtually every role. I feel it’s a pretty fair criticism, and perhaps Cera does too, as he’s taking some pretty drastic steps to buck the status quo. Like speaking only in Spanish for his next movie, which is set in Chile. Way to shake things up, George Michael!

The tricky part here is that Cera, despite having a 1:1 vowel-to-consonant ratio in his last name, doesn’t speak Spanish. Or at least, he didn’t. His Youth in Revolt director, Miguel Areta, has said that Cera is spending five hours a day working on his Spanish for an upcoming film from Sebastian Silva (The Maid). Cera’s got Latin fever like it’s 1999 up in this piece. No other details have come forth regarding the film, though it would be pretty funny if in a different language and country, Michael Cera is still accused of playing the same aloof everyman he always does. He could have just done something as simple as shaving his head or working with an accent coach, but speaking Spanish and going to Chile should get the job done, too. (Playlist)

Actor/director Mark Webber is gearing up to helm his second film, a touching love letter to the bond that exists between a father and son. In a move of classic Hollywood nepotism, he’s casting his own two-year old son to star opposite him.

A few other actors have been cast in the Scott Pilgrim star’s untitled film. Michael Cera, Amanda Seyfried, Shannyn Sossamon, and Jason Ritter will all appear as versions of their true selves in the film about a single dad raising his son after the mother’s death. Webber says, “I’m getting them to show a real side of who they are and smash that up with people’s expectations of celebrity.”

Well, good luck getting them to respect your kid’s work ethic, man. I mean, c’mon. Does he even have head shots? If he wants to make it in this town he needs to get his start mopping up porn sets. It’s the rule. Porn sets. Cough syrup commercials. And then, if you’re one of the lucky, an episode of “CSI.” No line-cutting. (THR)

As a recent and thoroughly wide-eyed convert to the cultish Church of Pilgrim, I was no doubt predisposed to drool over every moment of the Scott Pilgrim vs The World DVD bonus features. And drool I did, nearly the whole way through. Come to think of it, there might be something wrong with my mouth.

From concept sketches to storyboards to a generous offering of gags, bloopers, and deleted scenes that kept me smiling from start to finish, this first half of the production alone was a worthy supplement to the most original film of the year, and an enticing reason to swap out your Pilgrim torrent for a good old-fashioned store-bought copy.

The features only get better once you dive into the commentary — four separate rounds of discussion including remarks from Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jason Schwartzman, director Edgar Wright, and creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. Not typically one to sit through two hours of actors and filmmakers talking about themselves, I was genuinely impressed by the level of discussion here; the commentary revealed minute details about the film’s rich visuals that I hadn’t noticed before and nifty factoids about the oh-so-indie musical score, while delving deep into the process behind transplanting the world of Scott Pilgrim from page to screen.

Whether you’re a fan of the film or a staunch and exceedingly hip member of the “the comic book was better than the movie” camp, this is a collection of features worth checking out.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World releases on DVD and Blu-ray November 9th.

He kicks serious ass in this film, but in between the comic strip infused action sequences Michael still shyly tries to grasp the concepts that Mary Elizabeth Winstead lays out for him. I'll be rooting for him all the same because God knows Chris Evans needs to be taken down a peg after securing Captain America, but I hope he erases the elipsies from his speech pattern by the end of the film, a.k.a. grows some balls.
