One month ago, NBC hired a gentleman named Chuck Todd to host their Sunday morning politics show Meet the Press. Since then, the show has been coming in third in that arena, behind This Week and Face the Nation. However, it seems that Chuck Todd wasn’t NBC’s first choice.

Rather, they sought out a far more polarizing, and definitely more interesting choice: The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart. Shortly after Stephen Colbert had been given the call to host The Late Show, NBC reached out to Stewart to see if he wanted to take his brand of commentary and discussion to a more “institutional” setting. He declined.

While Stewart would have alienated current viewers with his snarky tone, and political leanings, the fact is that viewership is dying off, literally and figuratively, and Stewart could have brought his loyal viewership with him for some new blood. I mean, there’s not a lot of competition on Sunday mornings, and he does make politics more interesting than most.

It’s possible that he could have maintained his Daily Show gig while still hosting Meet the Press, but why mess with a good thing?
