The latest TV spot for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes shows the apes fighting a bear. Why they didn’t kick off the promo campaign with that is a mystery to me because I would watch a movie entirely about apes fighting bears. And I KNOW I’m not in the minority there.

Monkey Braveheart opens in theaters July 11, 2014.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes picks up ten years after James Franco’s monkey and the other smart apes attacked San Francisco. In that time, they’ve watched a lot of Braveheart and learned all the tools needed to lead an organized assault of their very own. Thanks a lot, Mel Gibson. If they watch The Patriot and get their hands on some cannons, we are all doomed.

There’s a famous W.C. Fields quote that says, “Never work with children or animals unless they’re played by Andy Serkis.” Matt Reeves is taking this advice to heart. The director of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has already agreed to stick with the franchise.

Considering Dawn of the Planet of the Apes doesn’t open in theaters until July, this shows that 20th Century Fox has a lot of confidence in what Reeves has done with the sequel. He’ll also share scripting duties with DotPotA’s screen writer Mark Bomback on the third film on the fast-tracked, high-priority film. Sad news for anyone who was hoping to snag Andy Serkis for their talking dog epic. (Deadline)

In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, primates tired of being persecuted and used for drug testing and hilarious birthday cards developed super-intelligence and rose up against their captors. The sequel picks up a decade later as a group of human rebels strive to find peace with the apes because apparently bullets still don’t work on them.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes stars Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Judy Greer, and Andy Serkis as Caesar with Cloverfield’s Matt Reeves directing.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was as close to a perfect summer film as you can get. The effects spectacle didn’t lack heart and the story made you empathize with the apes even as they ran around mauling the citizens of San Francisco. There was one area, however, where the movie was lacking… what effect does all this apes rising have on Gary Oldman. Problem solved.

The Dark Knight Rises actor has joined on to play Dreyfus, the leader of the human resistance after the apes have taken over. He’ll join the recently cast Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee, as well as the returning chief chimp-in-charge, Andy Serkis. (Deadline)

With Rupert Wyatt stepping down from the Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes sequel, the Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes director’s chair has been left open. Now, Fox has compiled a shortlist of the directors they’d like to hire to force Andy Serkis to dress up like a stupid dick. It’s the usual bunch of dudes with a few lesser knowns thrown in for safety.

On the list are Guillermo del Toro, Matt Reeves, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Juan Antonio Bayona, J. Blakeson, and Jeff Nichols. Let’s break it down.

Del Toro is currently busy with Pacific Rim, adapting The Strain for television, as well as executive producing Beauty and the Beast for the CW. Matt Reeves is rumored to top the list which would mean no Cloverfield sequel for a good long while. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo had The Crow fall apart and his Highlander remake isn’t on the fast track. Jeff Nichols impressed with Take Shelter, but isn’t as well versed with the special effects needed for a film like this. Same with The Disappearance of Alice Creed’s J. Blakeson. And, finally, Juan Antonio Bayona seems like a sound choice. The Impossible helmer is no stranger to special effects but it’s not like he made a guy dress up like a tidal wave. Those kinds of special effects are a whole other level.

The film currently has a May 2014 release date on the books, which means they need to come to a decision soon, otherwise those monkeys are just going to look silly. (Deadline)

It’s October, which means the feeling in the air is perfect for some news about Warner Brothers‘ planned big-screen version of the horror / scifi / fantasy / other stuff too anthology series The Twilight Zone. Sick joke fans know that The Twilight Zone was already made into an anthology film once in the 80s, unfortunately for Vic Morrow’s head. This version isn’t going to share quite as much with the TV series, however, since it’s planned to just have one storyline.

Anyway, the studio has finally selected a director to bring that “big science fiction action movie ” storyline to the screen, and it’s Cloverfield‘s Matt Reeves. The plan is to get Reeves signed on to the project, then polish the script and get it ready for for production by the summer of 2012. No word on what the actual plot is going to involve, but since it’s The Twilight Zone it might involve aliens, robots, gremlins, nuclear holocaust, ghosts who play pool…could be anything, really. Put a stake in them. They’re done. With vampires being so over, now all the awkwar high school kids who fight with their dads are going to begin dressing as Frankensteins in order to get laid. With a multitude of Frankenstein-themed projects in development, Let Me In director Matt Reeves is also getting in on the fun. Summit has tapped him to direct This Dark Endeavor from a script by Mean Creek’s Jacob Estes.

Based on the novel by Kenneth Oppel, the story begins when Victor Frankenstein‘s twin brother Konrad falls ill. So, the doctor attempts to conjure the Elixir Of Life, a serum that will bestow perpetual health. Finding the ingredients requires a dangerous adventure, so Frankenstein of course brings along the woman he secretly loves. What better way to show a girl you like her than by putting her in harm’s way? She then falls for the ailing brother Konrad and things get awkward from there. But not quite as awkward as when Frankenstein builds a monster out of dead bodies. Jeez, what a spazz. (Deadline)

“More vampires!,” a Hollywood executive barks into his phone. “We need more vampires, and quick! Who can we get to direct another vampire movie!?” The executive’s harried assistant suggests Matt Reeves, director of last year’s vampire flop Let Me In. The executive says “Reeves! Of course! Get Reeves on the phone!”

Believe it or not, the preceding scene must have actually happened at some point, because Matt Reeves has been brought on to helm The Passage. Here’s a bloodsucking plot synopsis:

“In The Passage, a group of terminally ill cancer patients get healthy after being subjected to the bites of bats in South America. Naturally, the government see this as a cure for the disease and starts experimenting. They end up with legion of nearly indestructible, telepathic vampire masters that begin infecting the populace.”

That sounds pretty cool, and definitely not in the Twilight mold of sexy vampires. Reeves must be something of a vampire himself, since he’ taken on both this and a remake-but-not-really of They Live in the past few days. When does he sleep? (Deadline)

Matt Reeves has been hired to make a non-They Live remake of They Live. Universal has tapped him to write and direct a film project based off the short story 8 O’Clock In The Morning.

The story centers on a man who awakes one day to realize that our society is comprised of and secretly controlled by aliens. The Ray Nelson short story served as the inspiration for They Live, but Reeves’ version will take a completely different approach than John Carpenter‘s.

“I saw an opportunity to do a movie that was very point-of-view driven, a psychological science fiction thriller that explores this guy’s nightmare,” Reeves tells Deadline. “There could be a desperate love story at the center of this. Carpenter took a satirical view of the material and the larger political implication that we’re being controlled I am very drawn to the emotional side, the nightmare experience with the paranoia of Invasion of the Body Snatchers or a Roman Polanski-style film.”

Matt Reeves is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. He caught a lot of flack when he made Let Me In, a remake of beloved genre entry Let The Right One In. So, though he’ll tell a different story than Carpenter did, he’s sure to encounter some divisiveness. Also, Ray Nelson is the original inventor of the propeller beanie. How could anyone ever fill his shoes?

Since the release of Let Me In, Matt Reeves has a lot more interesting scripts sent his way. So much so, that’s he having a hard time picking his next project. Reeves is trying to go with momentum and work out a deal to make his passion project The Invisible Woman. Regardless, one thing is definite. If he wanted to make Cloverfield 2, he’d be making Cloverfield 2. Maybe he’s waiting a few years for the found footage shakey-cam craze to die down.

Speculation is that he will once again be offered the Jane Austen by way of George Romano adaptation Pride and Prejudice and Zombies now that Mike White is off the project. Probably from nipple-pinching in development meetings. He looks like the type. (The Playlist)

Lovers of Let The Right One In, I have some good news for you. Matt Reeves didn’t eff up the movie you cherish so dearly. In fact, he might have even improved upon it, even though you didn’t think such a feat was possible. Let Me In is both a chilling and poignant horror tale that doesn’t stray too far from the original adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel. Unfortunately that could also be what bites it in the ass.

I don’t hold Let The Right One In in such high regard, which is probably a positive for Let Me In viewing. I didn’t go into the theater with a chip on my shoulder or a demand to be proven wrong. What impressed me most about Let Me In were the once again compelling performances by a new cast of actors. Kodi Smit-McPhee (the boy from The Road) plays Owen, an introverted kid who’s dealing with his parents’ spiteful divorce at home and the torment of masochistic bullies at school. How he walks straight after the wedge they lay on him, I’m still trying to decipher.

Abby (Chloe Moretz) arrives at Owen’s apartment complex just in the nick of time, when he’s running low and friends and options for surviving in the locker room. The two twelve-year-olds (more or less that age, in Abby’s case) form an immediate connection on the snow-topped playground equipment in the courtyard. Owen finds it odd that Abby walks barefoot without the consequence of losing her toes, but that doesn’t stop him from opening up to her about his troubles and handing over his Rubix cube.

The troubles that plague Abby are kept from Owen, and rightly so. Her caregiver (Richard Jenkins) forges out into the Los Alamos, New Mexico cold nightly to find his vampire cross to bear some blood. But he’s getting sloppy, and what are supposed to be quick drain jobs turn into unmitigated disasters. Jenkins does a terrific job as the browbeaten, exhausted custodian of a demanding vampire child. Abby lays into him when he fails to deliver, but she can hardly be held accountable for her intense desire to drink to survive.

As Owen and Abby get closer, the bodies around them pile up, forcing the Policeman (Elias Coteas) to delve deeper into the strange happenings around town. Coteas plays the role well, but seems just as morose and tired as Jenkins. Perhaps seasonal depression is running just as rampant as vampires are in N.M.

Director and writer Matt Reeves doesn’t shy away from the emotional complexity or intense violence that made the Let The Right One In such a standout film in the genre. Alright, maybe he doesn’t shine a light on Abby’s absence of sex organs, but I promise you won’t miss that fact as much as I’m sure she does. Staying so true to the original adaptation begs the question if a remake was even necessary, but considering most remakes aren’t, I’d mar Let Me In as both a successful and worthwhile one. If you’re a fan of the material, you’ll remain a fan. If you’re brand new to it, you should find yourself drawn to Reeves’s take. If you like vampires that sparkle, the copious amounts of blood and character depth in Let Me In may frighten you.

Finally, a Hollywood project that involves vampires. Let Me In, directed by Cloverfield's Matt Reeves, is the story of a awkward boy who unknowingly befriends a young vampire girl. Of course by "young," I mean "young looking." She's probably hundreds of years old since she's a goddamn vampire. At any rate, before too long, people end up getting drained of their blood, the local law enforcement starts to take notice, and this kid realizes his new friend is a monster. I'm sure it ends with the two of them being elected king and queen at the big middle school dance. If you like the vampire genre, you'll probably like this. If not, you'll still be able to enjoy Elias Koteas with a mustache, which looks awesome. Watch the Let Me In trailer after the jump...

Sweet stache, Elias!

Finally, a Hollywood project that involves vampires.

Let Me In, directed by Cloverfield’s Matt Reeves, is the story of a awkward boy who unknowingly befriends a young vampire girl. Of course by "young," I mean "young looking." She’s probably hundreds of years old since she’s a goddamn vampire.

At any rate, before too long, people end up getting drained of their blood, the local law enforcement starts to take notice, and this kid realizes his new friend is a monster. I’m sure it ends with the two of them being elected king and queen at the big middle school dance.

‘Let Me In’ Teaser: Gory Fun Without the Annoying Subtitles http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/let-me-in-teaser-gory-fun-without-the-annoying-subtitles/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/let-me-in-teaser-gory-fun-without-the-annoying-subtitles/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Chloe Moretz is back as another bloodthirsty tween in this teaser for Matt Reeves' Let The Right One In remake, Let Me In. Kodi Smit-McPhee stars as a bullied boy who befriends his new neighbor, a vampire child who keeps busy by eating members of the community. That's definitely a dick move, but not as bad as my neighbor who keeps stealing my parking space. That jerk deserves to be staked. LOOKS PRETTY SOLID TO ME. CHECK IT OUT AFTER THE JUMP AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK...

Though, for my own piece of mind, I'd like to ask that all perverts direct their lustfull eyeballs elsewhere and not at these first pics from the maligned remake of Let The Right One In. If you're willing to view responsibly, you can get a better look at Kick-Ass's Chloe Moretz as Abby the vampire girl and Kodi Smit-McPhee as her new friend Owen, in the pictures after the jump. And please sign the guestbook.
