You may remember the hilarious results when a guy’s mom tried to explain The Matrix. Well, she’s back. Fresh from having viewed Inception starring Matt Damon and maybe Jennifer Lawrence unless it’s Amy Adams.

If it’s any consolation, I found it super confusing too.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have both found tremendous success since they struck out together and made names for themselves. However, their success has been largely independent of one another, which makes us long for an old-school nostalgic bro-down between the two.

They won’t be on screen together, but the closest we might get is Incorporated, a series they’re both producing for the SyFy network that focuses on shady companies of the future who wield too much power.

Yes…”the future.”

Can they at least make a cameo as slacker best friends who stumble upon a giant cover-up that goes…ALL THE WAY TO THE SENATE?

They should. Damon can play a stoner, and Affleck can play a jock. Or an overwhelmed single father. Whatever. JUST PUT THEM ONSCREEN TOGETHER, YOU MONSTERS!

Well, that didn’t last long. Seemingly out of nowhere (and this is from honest-to-goodness journalists taht track this stuff like the wind) Universal has announced another Bourne film, starring, once again, Matt Damon, and directed by Paul Greengrass. Greengrass helmed Supremacy and Ultimatum, so the band is officially getting back together. Except for Franke Potente. Her character is still dead.

(cue sad tuba)

Not much else is known, other than the obvious fact that this is just an effort by Damon to demonstrate to rival/friend Ben Affleck that he can do more with a ROBERT LUDLUM CHARACTER than Affleck can do with Batman. Or so goes my thinking.

Deadline has the exclusive, so I’ll yield to their judgement on this. They’re saying this installment will hit theaters quickly, in July 2016, and will actually beat out the Renner-starring Justin Lin-helmed spinoff.

(cue more sad tuba music)

But we get a lot more Bourne!

(cue happy tuba music, which doesn’t exist, fall to floor, defeated and alone)

Soooooo…yeah. Damon is back as Borne before Renner is back as sorta-Bourne.

Brad Pitt, in addition to being a personal lubricant for any woman over the age of 20, is one of the generation’s most respected actors, having logged decades worth of Oscar-quality films.

But as with many actors of his caliber, his start was less auspicious — there are a bunch of late-’80s and ’90s stinkers with his young, beautiful mug in them. Some actors get lucky right out the gate (see: Jennifer Lawrence), but most actors that anyone cares about had to slog through bit parts in horrible movies to make a name.

In a cutthroat industry like Hollywood, we shouldn’t chastise them. Hell, we all gotta make rent. But that doesn’t make it any less schadenfreudelicious to look back on some of the awful early roles of actors who can now buy and sell us several times over.

Jennifer AnistonLeprechaun (1993) No one will pretend for a second that Jennifer Aniston has any cred as a “meaningful actress” — I’m guessing her shot at Oscar glory is as unlikely as her chances at a meaningful long-term relationship. But one year before she became Rachel Greene, she starred with Willow in horror comedy Leprechaun. This series is still cranking out sequels and prequels; no telling if she’s gonna add to her rumored $11o million net worth by reprising her role.

Leonardo DiCaprio – Critters 3 (1991) The funniest thing about this role is the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio pretty much looks like the same 17-year-old punk 23 years later. Still, it’s funny to see Martin Scorsese‘s go-to actor competing with a bunch of nasty Furbies with sharp teeth in the second sequel to an 80s B-movie franchise. Unfortunately, Leo makes it through the film without getting his punchable face chewed through.

Steve Carell – Curly Sue (1991) Steve Carell is the most aiiight comedian on the face of the earth, so I’m not sure if anyone missed much from his quick, nobody role as a waiter in this charming early-1990s vehicle for the surviving Belushi brother.

Damon WayansBeverly Hills Cop (1984) The funniest Wayans brother (by far) offers Eddie Murphy his bananas in a pretty funny bit role that served as something of a predecessor to his Men on Film bit on In Living Color.

Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger – Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994) This movie is indescribably bad, and features a pre-”awright, awright, awright” McConaughey basically being an evil redneck to Zellweger’s obnoxious, interminably screaming minx. Don’t watch this. Consider yourself warned.

Continue to the next page for the very humble beginnings of Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Angelina Jolie, and more…

In one of the few sequel announcements (updates, rather) Rounders 2 is a flushed-out property, according to Deadline, who has quotes from no less than Harvey Weinstein saying as much.

The film, which will be written by the writers of the original, David Levien and Brian Koppelman, will see Matt Damon and Edward Norton returning. The film will be more “international” with the opening card game set in Paris. On that note, Weinstein said that “There might be a certain, beautiful French actress” in the film. Which has to mean Marion Cotillard, right? I mean, she’s the only beautiful French actress there is, right?

Despite the international flavor, the producers seem to be going a little more American with their villain, writing out Teddy KGB for a character played by Robert DeNiro, who may just be parlaying his Silver Linings Playbook cred into somethign more than Grudge Match.

No word on a release date yet, but Weinstein said production would be “instantaneous” following a just-reached partnership to share the archives between TWC and Miramax.

Having not properly weighed the long-term costs of buying a zoo, Matt Damon is in need of some serious cash and he’ll earn it the best way he knows how — running around Prague and breaking bad guy necks. It’s reported that Damon is in talks to return to the Bourne franchise even though Jeremy Renner did a surprisingly good job keeping his seat warm.

If Damon does return, he won’t do so without director Paul Greengrass, evoking the code of Bros Before Shows. By the tenets of Hollywood Wingman Law, Universal is obligated to also enter talks with Greengrass.

This doesn’t mean that Renner is left out in the cold as his character has already been promised a sequel, “with potential crossover/merger of the characters’ stories to be sorted out if and when Damon signs back up.” What this tells me is that they’re thinking of the fans and genuinely care. At least enough so to grant them the passing of the baton that the Teen Wolf franchise never received. (Twitch)

Eat your heart out, Judge Dredd.

The more that we see, the more it looks like Elysium will probably be this summer’s best movie. Matt Damon stars as a guy trying to stay out of trouble on Shitty Future Earth who has to resort to extreme measures when an industrial accident leaves him with only five days to live. Those extreme measures involve an exoskeleton, explode-y bullets, and breaking into Rich Person Space Station Land where they have cures for every disease just laying around. Too bad for them there is no cure for Matt Damon shoving a gun down their throat.

The post Matt Damon’s 7 Greatest Action Roles appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
With Elysium hitting theaters August 9th, we’re back to seeing Oscar-winning screenwriter Matt Damon suited up as an action hero. While Damon’s career hasn’t exactly been rife with shoot-em up roles, there’s been a few that not only mark his career, but helped redefine and push the boundaries of the genre as well. Here they are, in no particular order, but with Bourne mentioned first because, c’mon, Jason Bourne.

7. Jason Bourne

Duh. It can be said (arguably), that Jason Bourne was the action hero for a new generation, following the genre’s apex in the mid-late 80’s. Since the moment he first stepped into the role, Matt Damon played Jason Bourne as a no-frills ass-kicker who makes his impact as a stone-cold professional, rather than spouting off one liners. And while he’s something of a physical marvel in his fights, the moves he fires off are always in the realm of possibility – it’s not like he’s flipping over trucks while chomping on a cigar.

While he doesn’t overly emote in the franchise, Damon brings a quiet frustration to the character that becomes more and more profound as the audiences become more familiar with him over the three films.

6. Private Ryan

While, calling Saving Private Ryan an “action film,” and Private Ryan an “action role” might be a little off-point, it’s hard to call the last quarter of the film anything other than a mind-blowing action sequence. The fact that it’s rife with sentiment and historical weight doesn’t change that fact.

While Private Ryan was the one being saved, rather than doing the saving, he demonstrates some serious integrity as he refuses to leave his platoon during a crucial stand.

In short, he earned it.

5. Cale Tucker

While Titan A.E. was largely consumed and dismissed by critics and audiences alike, one can’t argue with the pedigree of voice actors and producers. The famous Don Bluth was behind the story of a young man (Tucker, voiced by Matt Damon) who was racing against evil aliens to locate a spaceship, and in doing so, save the damn world.

The film blends hand drawn animation with computer effects, giving the film a more organic feel than many of the clumsy early-CGI films of its era.

4. Specialist Ilario

Courage Under Fire is another entry that defies the traditional action film mold, with the film’s protagonist dead within the first few minutes, and a narrative that is both unreliable and backwards looking. Matt Damon played Specialist Ilario, a medic who futilely tried to do the honorable thing while many of his peers were looking for an easier way out during a dangerous firefight.

3. Himself

Of course, we are referring to Team America: World Police. Damon is hardly a daunting presence in the film, and while the action film is puppet-driven, and Damon is portrayed as mentally disabled because his marionette looked, frankly, retarded, the fact is there just aren’t too many Matt Damon action films, so we’ll take what we can get.

2. Roy Miller

The Green Zone was another film that didn’t manage to resonate with audiences or critics, and serves as a political thriller with a fair amount of action in it. Set in Iraq in present-day 2009, Green Zone follows Matt Damon’s character as he tries to figure out why he’s having such a hard time finding those weapons of mass destruction that he had been promised.

That was kind of a recurring theme for the past decade.

1. Colin Sullivan

The Departed is, alas, another movie that you might not find in the “Action/Adventure” section of your local Blockbuster, but the body count by the end of the film would dictate otherwise. The Hong Kong actioner that it’s based on is a little more slick would in comes to the action, but that doesn’t mean that Scorsese can’t bring the ruckus, and Colin is arguably a bigger bad than even Nicholson in the US adaptation.

It ranks between the ill-advised plastic surgery victim and Greg Kinnear‘s conjoined twin on the scale of Matt Damon screen transformations.

This trailer also features previously unseen footage of robot cops being complete dicks. I can’t wait to see Matt Damon running around in outer space ripping their mechanical heads off.

Director Tom McCarthy of films like Win Win and The Station Agent is prepping a movie about the sex scandals in the Catholic Church (if you have no idea what I’m talking about, bless you). And he wants Matt Damon to star in it.

The as yet untitled movie is said to be an All The President’s Men style docu-thriller about the Catholic Church’s coverup of sex abuses in Boston, as uncovered by a reporting team at the Boston Globe.

Damon, who is of course one of Boston’s most famous celebrity escapees, hasn’t read the script yet, but producers seem to be confident that they can entice him into taking the part of reporter Mike Rezendes in the sure-to-be controversial project.

We’ve wringed our hands and grit our teeth long enough. The time is finally here to geek out over our first look at Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium.

In the first still from the director’s District 9 follow-up, we see that Matt Damon is reprising the cameo role he played in EuroTrip. Though, the events that would transform a Rollins wannabe from the suburbs into a big honkin’ gun-wielding man in the fight for his life on a dystopian Earth haven’t been explained yet. It’s also not explained whether or not he’s still tapping Kristin Kreuk‘s Fiona. But I have trust that Blomkamp will explain it all and have it make sense. District 9 was sooooo good.

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Along with the names already mentioned, the film co-stars Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Alice Braga and Diego Luna and is set to be released in theaters on March 1, 2013. (RopeofSilicon)

The new Bourne Legacy trailer has hit the Internet, and while it looks to be in keeping with the previous Bourne installments (equal parts shoot-’em-up and political/spy thriller), what we don’t know is why Jeremy Renner‘s character is in The Bourne Legacy?

“He’s Treadstone without the inconsistency.”

“He’s an Outcome agent.”

“We’ve never seen evaluations like this.”

Thanks, trailer, but that doesn’t really answer my question.

This preview of the fourth Bourne film, the first without star Matt Damon, shows us Jeremy Renner getting indoctrinated as an agent, under the tutelage and supervision of the added Edward Norton, but it’s unclear from this clip exactly what the connection is between him, Treadstone, and Jason Bourne.

Oh well. I’m sure it will be explained, as Bourne has proven pretty methodical with its plodding.

On the other hand, he jumps on a tree in the snow, and that’s pretty darn neat.

For those who prefer to watch guys get beaten and anally raped over families that buy zoos, this mashed-up trailer is for you. Some dear, dear soul took the trailer for the tepidly-received Cameron Crowe film We Bought a Zoo and mashed it up with The Shawshank Redemption.

Adding elements of The Shawshank Redemption to anything is like inviting T-Pain to sing a verse on your hip-hop album – it always makes the original work better. I didn’t see We Bought a Zoo because it was a Cameron Crowe film about a family that lost its mom and bought a damn zoo. I keep watching The Shawshank Redemption because it’s a film about life in prison that features Morgan Freeman.

It’s virtually indisputable that the latter shines brighter than the former, and Crowe’s purebred rock soundtrack meshes surprisingly well with the droning chants of “fresh fish.”

We haven’t seen Matt Damon get mad at anybody since he showed Minnie Driver‘s phone number to Viggo the Carpathian. But now he’s showing animosity toward The Bournce Legacy writer and director Tony Gilroy. He hasn’t been shy about disliking Gilroy’s work and claiming allegiance to dismissed director Paul Greengrass. Gilroy and Greengrass have very different styles and, in fact, Gilroy refuses to be in a room with Greengrass. I know, what a bitch!

But now there are reports that this anger might end any of Damon’s participation in a continuation of the series.

“I think if [Bourne Legacy] doesn’t work, we can just ignore it and pretend it didn’t happen, and that’d be fine,” Damon said. “But I expect that it will work and only help us if we did another one, which I’d love to do.”

“At the end of the day, it’s between me and Tony, and we’ll figure it out or we won’t.”

How do you like those apples? (The Playlist)

Thomas Jane recently admitted that he turned tricks on Santa Monica Boulevard when he was a struggling young actor. This stint as a male prostitute probably gave him the edge when auditioning for his current role as a male prostitute on the HBO series Hung.

This made us wonder about what other films and roles might have been preceded with some distasteful or otherwise unpleasant preparation. As it turns out, the list is pretty daunting. We take for granted that actors must really submerse themselves in roles that require them to pretend to know how to fire a rifle or be sexually attracted to Jack Black.

Here’s our take on one of the darker sides of Hollywood.

9. Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie, and Akihiro Kitamura – Human Centipede

All actors playing characters that were part of the centipede had to complete a rigorous three-week camp in Morocco at which they had to complete countless trust exercises, centipede observation, and pooping in each others’ mouths.

Said one actor, who requested not to be identified, “It was the best three weeks of my life.”

8. Brad PittMoneyball

In order to “sell” the role of real-life baseball GM Billy Beane, Brad Pitt thought it best that he train himself to be able to discuss baseball without instantly passing out due to boredom. It’s Hollywood’s worst-kept secret that he developed a pretty serious crystal meth habit just so he could stay awake to read lines about OBP, slugging percentages, and balks.

Halfway through filming, he learned a trick from Bob Costas, who inserted a tack into Pitt’s right shoe, instructing him to step down on it, causing enough pain to keep the user alert while engaged in a conversation about pennant races at the All-Star break. It is supposedly the same trick that Freddie Prinze Jr. used while filming Summer Catch.

7. Leonardo DiCaprio/Joseph Gordon-Levitt – Inception

This was a more scientific undertaking than it was a psychological problem. Whenever DiCaprio and Gordon-Levitt were in character, explaining the “levels” of dreams to other characters onscreen, their ears and eyes would begin hemorrhaging blood. It was never enough that Christopher Nolan or the crew would fear for their safety, but it was enough to require frequent costume and makeup changes.

Initially, Nolan spent the better part of nine months putting the cast before dream experts and physics professors to explain the plot, but when even the academics’ eyes started to spew blood, Nolan cut his losses and simply cleared out all the blood in post-production, courtesy of Industrial Light and Magic.

With Elizabethtown an almost distant memory, Cameron Crowe is ready to spend studio money again. We Bought A Zoo marks his return to narrative film-making. Matt Damon stars as a widowed dad who moves his kids to a zoo in order to fulfill his wife’s wish that her children live in the constant danger of being eaten by a bear or lion or giraffe (don’t trust them).

Scarlett Johansson is there too in the form of a ho zookeeper, so that Matt Damon will have someone to keep him distracted from watching his kids around all those jungle animals.

We get it. There’s a disease and it’s bad. You don’t need to tell us twice. And you certainly don’t need to tell us six different times.

But he does anyway with these character posters for Contagion, which I’m just going to start describing as “Outbreak-but-better.”

We’ve got posters here for Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, and Kate Winslet. There’s acknowledging that you’ve got a great cast, then there’s bragging about it, and right now director Steven Soderbergh is toeing the line. Seriously, though, this cast looks lights-out.

It’s not clear if the film will be as scary as the posters would lead us to believe, but I have hopes that it will be every bit as good as the hype that surrounds it.

Some set photos from Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium have found their way online, and they give us our most science-fictiony look at Matt Damon ever captured on film. Here we see a bald Damon dressed in futuristic armor as he desperately searches a construction site for a toilet. We’ve all been there, Matt.

As details about the film’s plot have been kept under wraps, it’s open to debate how the photos of the mansion tie into the film’s plot. Also up for debate is why Damon would be stumbling through a construction site and what he ate to put him into that predicament in the first place. (via Collider)

The 'Contagion' Trailer Will Kills Us All!

Steven Soderbergh‘s upcoming viral thriller Contagion is premiering in just a few weeks, provided humanity can survive that long. And you know what that means: TV spots! Here are two, fresh off the Petri dish. Above is the first one, which focuses more on Matt Damon and wife Gwyneth Paltrow before branching off into worldwide panic, while the other one (below) is pretty much all worldwide panic. You can also catch glimpses of Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard, and Kate Winslet. Can’t wait to watch them all slowly die of an incurable virus!

I think these both look great, and I’m excited to see Soderbergh take on such an established genre. And it’ll almost definitely be better than Outbreak.

Good news everyone!! Armadyne is hiring. If you’re a zero g welder, mega-structure engineer, quantum networker or an expert in the field of zero g coupling and multi-generational planning, you just might find yourself gettin’ paid.

What you’re seeing above is a viral campaign launched to promote Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium. ComingSoon came across a recruitment poster at Comic-Con that points to the fictional website Armadyne, where the video is posted. I’ve gotta say, as far as virals go this looks really impressive. If they’re willing to put this kind of money into a web video, imagine what Neill Blomkamp will be able to achieve with his budget. It’s going to look sweeeet. Wake me up in 2013 when the movie’s released. **locks self in Demolition Man cryo-chamber**

We’ve got the first trailer for Steven Soderbergh‘s latest, Contagion. The plot is similar to Outbreak, in that it’s a medical thriller about a race against the clock to find a cure…yadda yadda, but Steven Soderbergh gives us hope that this could be a more moving, thoughtful film. Oh, and the cast features a murderer’s row of Oscar winners that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet as well as Lawrence Fishburne, Bryan Cranston, Marion Cotillard, and, of course, Demetri Martin. Wait, what?

Contagion opens September 9th. If we even last that long with this, this THING out there.

Elysium has made a last-second addition to its roster, picking up Diego Luna to star as Julio, the best friend of star Matt Damon‘s character. Luna is still in talks with Sony to join, but all signs point to “yes,” the most compelling sign being “they have to get someone signed on immediately because the film stars shooting this summer.

Luna would join Damon, William Fichtner, and Jodie Foster in the sci-fi flick. Elysium tells the story of an alien-human war here on earth, with filming taking place in both Mexico and Canada, presumably to better convey a sense of a continental war.

Elysium must be some kind of production, because the summer ’11 start date doesn’t allow the film to hit theaters any sooner than March ’13. One could guess that there are probably some special effects in the mix on this guy. (Variety)

The script Warner Bros. picked up for Matt Damon to direct will, it turns out, be directed by Matt Damon. And all is right with the world.

4 photosCameron Crowe Tweets 'We Bought A Zoo' Pics #SadFamiliesAndLions

Damon recently confirmed that he will be directing a project in early ’12, so unless he’s got another super-secret project up his sleeve, expect Father Daughter Time: A Tale of Armed Robbery and Eskimo Kisses to be his directorial debut. As the title suggests, the film follows a dad and daughter through a multi-state crime spree. It’s possible that Damon will star, but no news has broken on that front yet.

In the same interview, Damon dropped the name of one of the stars of the film,”The Office“s John Krasinski. So in addition to Father Daughter Time serving as the first film Matt Damon directs, it could also serve as the first critically successful big-budget film for Krasinski, who resume includes License to Wed, Something Borrowed, and Leatherheads.

So…win-win? (Vulture)

So yesterday a report came in that Sonia Braga was joining Neil Blomkamp’s upcoming movie Elysium. This was a mistake though – it’s actually her niece, Alice Braga, who’s been cast in the movie. Clarification Elysium will NOT have Sonia Braga in it, but will instead have her niece, Alice Braga. Got it? Good.

What's This Weirdo Thing? 'Video By: Neill Blomkamp'

There aren’t any additional details on who her character in the movie will be, and she’s joining the already-cast stars Jodie Foster and Matt Damon. The movie itself, like Blomkamp’s previous project District 9, is a bit shrouded in mystery. We do know that it isn’t a sequel to District 9, and that it takes place on a distant planet. Oh, and that Alice Braga will appear in it. Alice Braga, not Sonia Braga. (Deadline)
