Sony recently announced that they were pushing back the next installment of Spider-Man because it’s not doing as well as other Marvel films (my guess), so some bandwidth in the studio will allow for a new film. Of course, this too will be a superhero film, because those are the only films that exist any more.

As the headline so tactfully conveys, there are no further details, other than it will be released in 2017, and it will feature a woman superhero, perhaps in response to the clamor that there are no female superhero movies. Ok. Fine. It will be a superhero from the Spider-Man universe, of which most people know very little. But they’ll be educated. Oh, how they’ll be educated!

Spider-Man‘s answer to The Avengers, Sinister Six, will arrive in theaters in 2016, and will no doubt give us much of the backstory we don’t really need when plopping in front of a superhero film.

THANK GOD.

Now’s a pretty good time to get familiar with the Marvel universe. I mean, five years ago would have been a better time — before the deluge of Marvel films at the box office — but considering that Marvel and Disney have pretty much earmarked every single weekend in the future for some sort of Marvel film, you might as well bone up on the world they’ve created.

This video makes it easy to follow every little inside joke in the universe. It’s not exactly Marvel 101, but if you’ve seen some of the films, this could offer a little depth in what may have otherwise just seemed like big summer fare.

Educate yourself and enjoy.

Guardians of the Galaxy marketed itself as a different type of superhero film. It was character driven, as audiences weren’t familiar enough with the source material to fall back on the familiar faces and plots. It was goofy and funny, but not at the expense of action. The film was initially far riskier than Iron Man, The Avengers, or any of the old guard.

But rather than alienating the die-hard fans, Guardians appealed to…well, everyone. It pulled in $94 million its opening weekend, which is just $1 shy of Captain America‘s take earlier this year. It also will likely lend itself better to repeat viewings, so it could prove a little more durable in later weeks.

Good thing they’ve already announced the sequel. America apparently can’t get enough of little raccoons and anthropomorphic trees.

All signs point to Guardians of the Galaxy, despite being based on lesser-known source material from Marvel, making an absolute killing at the box office this weekend. And the next weekend. And probably on DVD. And PPV. And merchandising.

While the tools used predict such information are a little “inside baseball” and foreign (focus groups, ouija boards, surveys) we got our first real piece of evidence today when it was revealed that last night the film took in $11.2 million, which is more than Captain America, the year’s high-water mark, did in its first night.

The predictors are expecting $40-$50 million tonight, with the weekend totaling $80-$90+ million.

In any event, the film is all but guaranteed to have the biggest August opening ever for a film, eclipsing The Bourne Ultimatum’s $69 million.

Yay, Hollywood revenues. It’s nice to know that these studio execs will finally see some money from their hard work.

The post Marvel Announces ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Will Also Be An Animated TV Series appeared first on Screen Junkies.

At the Marvel panel at Comic-Con (which I’m guessing is a pretty big deal), it was announced, in the wake of news that James Gunn will be writing and directing the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, that the franchise will also spinoff an animated series.

It’s no surprise that the series will air on Disney XD, considering the recent(ish) acquisition of Marvel by Disney. The property will join Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., which are both getting picked up by the network for second seasons. Seriously, there’s a cartoon called Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and it’s getting a second season.

Marvel is seems to be going fairly apeshit with its expansion since the Disney synergy emerged. In addition to the half-dozen secret movie release dates, they’ve got Daredevil on Netflix, Marvel’s Agent Carter coming to television, and probably fourteen other things I’m forgetting because there are just too damn many.

In order to keep feeding the beast of high-profile release dates that Marvel/Disney has staked out for the next four years or so, there’s no time for annual evaluations and strategic meetings. There’s your gut, and there’s following what it has to say. And Marvel’s gut is saying that Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be huge, that James Gunn did a great job writing and directing, and that he should be hired for the second one with no more discussion.

And so it shall be.

Gunn has been picked up to write and direct the next installment of the film (release date July 28, 2017). I don’t entirely understand the virtue in making this announcement now, before the first one premieres. I mean, it’s not like he won’t have three years to film and edit the sequel. My guess is this is something of a marketing move, with Marvel demonstrating just how confident they are that this movie is going to kick ass.

It’s like booking a Super Bowl trip while your team is in the Wild Card hunt. Only the Wild Card hunt is a raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper. Or the Super Bowl is voiced by Bradley Cooper. Shit. I think I screwed up this analogy.

In this age of superhero blockbuster decadence, it doesn’t even seem possible to make things too big. The Avengers represents like five franchises, Batman is fighting Superman, and the crossover opportunities seem endless.

However, could worlds really collide to bring us Superman in a Star Wars world? Or, far less likely, vice versa?

Almost certainly not, but when Zack Snyder Tweeted out this image of the Man of Steel holding a lightsaber, it sure did get people talking about what’s to be discussed at his upcoming panel at Comic-Con.

Of course, Warner Bros works with DC, and Disney owns Marvel (and Star Wars), so there’s no natural fit, nor is there much incentive for Disney to play nice with the enemy.

But still, you’ve got our attention you crafty marketer, Mr. Snyder. So what the hell does this represent, other than our gullibility?

Disney knows that they’ve got a good thing going with Marvel, and, rather than exercise their usual restrain when it comes to scheduling releases, Disney/Marvel has taken to announcing one superhero movie after another, with little to no plot details or even a title.

And we got one more at Comic-Con yesterday, as they politely asked attendees to clear their schedule for May 4th, 2018. I have an aromatherapy appointment that day, but I should be free by 4:00 or so if anyone wants to go see the last matinee.

Seriously, nothing beyond that is known, just like with their other 5 (FIVE!) TBA blockbusters dates. So to summarize, leave open (courtesy of Jen Yamato from Deadline): July 28 and November 3rd, 2017, July 6 and November 2nd, 2018, the above May date, and then May 3rd, 2019.

You’ll know more about these mystery films when we do.

We won’t have to wait too long to see more of Deborah Ann Woll after True Blood ends its creepy monster porn run in the coming weeks. She’s headed over to Netflix for a lead role in Marvel’s Daredevil. Woll will play Karen Page, the love interest of Matt Murdock, the blind attorney who fights crime as the man without fear. I guess that makes him really good around women. If I were ever in a one-on-one conversation with Deborah Ann Woll, I’d be so intimidated that I stutter like a SQMY disc player before hiding behind a potted plant.

Woll has a unique connection to the role already. Her real-life boyfriend is losing his vision due to choroideremia and the two publicly campaign to fight the rare genetic disorder, which I guess spares him from having to watch this season of True Blood. (EW)

There seems to be a diversity memo flying around the Marvel comic book offices pretty quickly these days. Not only did the company announce that Thor will become a woman (in print for right now), but Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada took to The Colbert Report to announce that Captain America will be black, starting this fall.

How does a white character become black? Because this is the world of comic books, where anything can happen. But more specifically, it will happen in a storyline in which the original Cap’n, Steve Rogers, will be replaced by Sam Wilson, aka, The Falcon due to Rogers’ weakening powers. Sam Wilson was played by Anthony Mackie in the most recent film adaptation, and would be a great Captain America, but so far this change is only being discussed in the comics themselves.

See? That was easy.

I guess the harder part will diversifying the bland names of the characters, and yes, I’m looking directly at “Peter Parker” as I say that.

It’s hard to describe the vibe of Big Hero Six with the written word. But about ten seconds in to the trailer, you’ll get it. While Marvel went live-action with The Avengers, Disney and Marvel teamed up to give us an animated Big Hero Six that has a look very similar to Ratatouille, which should be just fine with Pixar fans.

The Big Hero Six originally were a decidedly Japanese-inspired group of superheroes, but in this trailer, they take on a cartoonish American quality. Maybe it’s because they’re characters in an American cartoon. We’ll never know for sure.

We’re a week away from San Diego Comic-Con 2014 and Marvel is already stealing the show by releasing the first official look at The Avengers: Age of Ultron titular android. From the looks of things, you won’t even miss Loki.

As suspected, Ultron’s origin has been adapted to fit better in the established cinematic universe that Marvel has been building. The robot that will kill us all is created when Tony Stark hatches a plan to outsource his superheroing so he and The Avengers can spend more time enjoying shawarma bro-hangs. However, you can’t give a robot James Spader‘s voice and expect it not to start acting full-tilt creepy. In its pursuit to protect humanity, Ultron reasons that humanity needs to be wiped out. What a dense robot.

The Avengers must band together once again to take out this man-made threat. And, because it’s Joss Whedon, presumably give Tony Stark a good ribbing too.

Why? Doesn’t matter. Thor‘s a woman now. Goddess of Thunder.

Lady Thor will make her debut in a new comic series, and it’s rumored that the change is only temporary, but I think I speak for everyone involved when I say that if Lady Thor makes it to the big screen, we’d like to see the Natalie Portman love interest storyline continued, if not escalated.

Guardians of the Galaxy is back with an extended trailer to further convince you to see the film. It also does a great job of convincing me to download “Cherry Bomb” by The Runaways.

Marvel screened 17 minutes of footage from the film in IMAX and if the early reactions can be trusted, this film is going to be massive. According to Latino Review, the 3D is used to great effect for the sequences set in space. Think Gravity with much more to look at than Sandra Bullock’s face pasted on an astronaut’s body.

Performance-wise, Chris Pratt‘s muscles are about to become straight up celebrities and parents are going to have to be ever vigilant if they want to stop their children from approaching raccoons. Sounds like Marvel’s streak will continue. It’s their galaxy. We just live in it.

The earlier trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy leaned on half-cooked jokes and an obscure ’70′s pop soundtrack. All of that gets thrown out in this new international trailer to reveal that, hey, this thing looks like it could be pretty good. With a more epic soundtrack and scenes that highlight a heavy dose of action, this looks like the most fun movie we’ll see this summer.

We’re also given our best introduction to Rocket Raccoon (as voiced by Bradley Cooper) and learn that he’s a real wise-cracker. He’s their Chandler.

Marvel continues having a tough time finding a director who wants to work on a movie about Paul Rudd talking to ants, but they’ve proven far more successful in bringing a movie about a neurosurgeon who is also a magician to the screen. Variety reports that writer-director Scott Derrickson will be the guy tasked with making this really weird film. To date, Derrickson has primarily worked in the horror genre on films like Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose which tonally could work well for a Doctor Strange film. Now it’s only a matter of convincing Keanu Reeves to wear a cape and they’ve got a go picture.

Though Marvel has not commented, Derrickson broke the news himself by tweeting a photo of himself peering up from an issue of the comic, with the message: “My next movie will be STRANGE.” I infer that to mean that he will be directing Doctor Strange.

It was announced last week that Anchorman director Adam McKay was on the shortlist to direct Ant-Man in the wake of Edgar Wright‘s leaving the project. Now that list is even shorter as McKay removed himself from the negotiations after moving pretty far along in talks with Marvel. Citing that he’s too busy at the moment to film scenes of Paul Rudd swimming in a toilet, although he’d love to get to that should there ever be an Anchorman 3.

The shortlist also included We’re the Millers director Rawson Marshall Thurber and the just terrible Ruben Fleischer. It’s unknown if they’re still in the mix now that Marvel revealed their favorite was McKay. We will keep you posted when this important film is eventually reassigned. (THR)

Josh Brolin has been cast as Thanos, the purple-skinned bad guy that we’re supposed to take seriously who popped up at the end of The Avengers. He will likely play a large role in the Marvel Universe as the Infinity Gauntlet storyline continues to unfurl. Brolin will voice Thanos in some capacity in Guardians of the Galaxy and possibly star as the main villain in The Avengers 3 where Tony Stark will undoubtedly call him Grape Ape. Mouth on that guy.

The day after Netflix and Marvel announced that they lost their showrunner in Drew Goddard, they’ve got some good news they want to share. The studios have found their Daredevil for the Netflix exclusive series of the same name.

His name is Charlie Cox, and you might recognize him as Owen, the Irish gangster, from Boardwalk Empire. In keeping with lore, Cox will play Matt Murdock, who moonlights as blind superhero Daredevil, for the initial 13-episode run of the Netflix series of the same name.

Netflix has the rights to three other superhero tales, with Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage being the other Marvel heroes that will join Daredevil in The Defenders miniseries down the road.

But one thing at a time. Let’s focus on the Irish gangster that’s now a blind lawyer.

First Edgar Wright packs up his stuff and leaves Marvel’s Ant-Man, and now Drew Goddard is stepping down from Marvel’s Netflix series Daredevil. Even with the success of X-Men, that’s some pretty rough news for the studio.

However, at least Goddard didn’t leave over the “creative differences” that Edgar Wright cited. Rather, Goddard has chosen to focus on a Spider-Man spinoff Sinister Six. Which, of course is also a Marvel property. So it’s unlikely this came as a surprise to them. He stays in the Marvel machine, but that is probably cold comfort for the producers of Daredevil, who lose a fan favorite such as Goddard to another project.

Goddard, best known for his work with Joss Whedon on Buffy and s, will stay on as a consultant. What that means is unclear, other than he’ll continue to get paid by the series. Nice work, Drew.

Edgar Wright, the man behind the cult faves Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, has lef this pet project Ant-Man just a short time before filming was to begin.

The little-known Marvel property had been championed by Wright for years, and garnered more intrigue after it had been announced that Paul Rudd was to play the superhero.

However, due to the catch-all “creative differences,” Wright has walked off, amicably, if a press release is to be believed. The cast is currently set to stay, and while the studio behind the film, Marvel, can find a new director, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to replicate his playful reverence or the cult cache that he brings to the project.

But no doubt they’ll try.

Not much, so far.

As the public consciousness has drifted further and further away from actual, physical comic books, the industry has had to become a bit more “dramatic” in the past few decades, relying on shocking developments to market and sell their wares.

So, while the film division of Marvel is rolling around in piles of money, the comic book division has resorted to killing off Wolverine for his 40th anniversary. Happy birthday, sir.

In the 3 Months to Die arc of the superhero, Wolverine will be robbed of his regenerative powers, having to go through life stupidly and vulnerably like the rest of us. At the end of the arc, he will presumably die. And while it’s unsaid, I think the expectations of anyone who has been in the comic world before knows that this will result in a new version of Wolverine coming back in a year or so, to “fanfare.”

Presumably, this will have absolutely no bearing on the films, as I doubt some Hollywood big shot is going to have some dude with crayons tell him what he can and can’t make a movie about.

Goodbye, Wolverine. You’ll be missed for the sixteen minutes you’re actually gone.

Let me be super-clear. Karen Gillan, the human being, has NOT been cast by J.J. Abrams in Star Wars: Episode VII. However, the hair that was formally attached to Karen Gillan, the human being, will be seen in the film. Perhaps as a love interest for Chewbacca?

The Oculus and Doctor Who actress shaved her head for Guardians of the Galaxy and the guys at Marvel couldn’t stand to see all that beautiful hair go to waste. Gillan tells Collider:

Was it just very liberating to shave your head, or did you have any moments of tears while they were doing it?

GILLAN: No, I was laughing hysterically. It really hit me when I woke up the next morning. That’s when I was like, “Oh, my god, where’s my hair?!” But also, everyone kept me in good spirit. Everyone was laughing and telling jokes. Marvel are the best company to work for, they really are. They treat you really well. They made my hair into the most incredible well-made wig and they gave it to the Star Wars people. It’s just so funny to think that my hair is made into a wig, next to all these Star Wars monster heads in a warehouse. I thought that was really funny.

Let that be a note to obsessive fans. Gillan doesn’t care if you mess with her hair. Have at it.

It has finally happened. Five long days after the premiere of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios has stopped toying with its fans and given them the release date and confirmation of Captain America 3.

Sure, it’s a little suspicious that it comes right after the film made $96 million and shattered box office records, but that’s probably just because that event coincided with the studio having a really good idea for the premise of the third one.

Marvel, in a pretty brash display, will be unleashing Cap’n 3 the same weekend (May 6, 2016) that the Batman-Superman film is supposed to hit theaters. It doesn’t matter. I’m going to be hungover from Cinco de Mayo ’16 that it will probably be weeks before I even think about leaving the house.

I’m sure one of these movies will flinch in the 2+ years preceding their release, but this makes for a fun little tinkling contest between the rival comic book studios, so enjoy the show and stay out of the splash zone.

A first look at Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver on the set of The Avengers: Age of Ultron reveals their costumes are kind of whatever. While Joss Whedon was smart to ditch Scarlet Witch’s red pleather bustier and headdress in favor of whatever he could find in the Buffy wardrobe storage unit, what is going on with Quicksilver? The combination of June Squibb’s hair, the Under Armour shirt, and black socks with sneakers is just no. Tony Stark is going to have a field day with this guy.

Also spotted on set was Ultron. I think. I’d expected he’d be constructed with more adamantium and less North Face outerwear.  We can assume that he’ll either be imbued with CGI or this is one of those pictures of celebrities doing a horrible job of disguising themselves from the paparazzi. Nice try, Alec Baldwin. (SuperHeroHype)

In a melee that you could only have previously seen on Hollywood Boulevard, Batman and Superman will team up to fight Captain America. This fight will happen in theaters on May 6th, 2016 when Warner Bros releases the Untitled Superman/Batman Project opposite Marvel’s Captain America 3.

In all fairness, Marvel had dibs on the date first although they hadn’t decided which super-person movie they’d fill the slot with. Then DC/Warner Bros planted their flag in the same date with their highly anticipated film. I kinda wish Marvel was able to release an Avengers sequel on the same date and absolutely crush DC as payback for Man of Steel sucking so much ass, but maybe this is a long game and they’re planning to pit The Avengers against Justice League. Which would be spectacular. FIGHT! FIGHT!! FIGHT!!! (THR)
