Set during the Cold War, Gary Oldman stars as a former MI6 agent to root out a mole in the upper echelons of the agency. Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong,  Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham also star. The earlier teaser focused on Cumberbatch’s character whereas this one centers more on Tom Hardy, who first learns of the double-agent and brings the information to the organization. But can he be trusted? I say just fire the whole lot of them.

The English-language debut from Let The Right One In director Tomas Alfredson, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy stars Gary Oldman as a spy in the British Intelligence community trying to uproot a mole amongst its ranks. He sends British Namey Award Winner 2010 Benedict Cumberbatch to investigate five high-ranked agents to figure out which one it is. It turns into a race against time as the mole blows the cover of the best agents. And Colin Firth looks wicked guilty.

Moving right along, Focus Features has announced a release date for Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson’s new film, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The cast includes a few folks bat-swiped from The Dark Knight Rises, Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy, not to mention Colin Firth and Mark Strong. The spy drama will be released November 18, 2011.

Here are the new posters for Green Lantern, which show the Green Lantern Corps in action-tastic stances. It looks like Chicken Fish, aka Tomar-Re (Geoffrey Rush) is gonna lob some green power right at ya, catapult style. You’ve also got Sinestro (Mark Strong) scowling mightily, probably because he had a bad day at the fantasy tanning salon. Kilowog’s (Michael Clarke Duncan) strategy is to distract you with his face while he punches you in yours. Hal Jordan is rolling his eyes while powering up, as if to say,”I am way too powerful to be posing for this poster.”

Warner Bros. dropped these new teaser character posters for Green Lantern. They’re not unlike Power Rangers in the sense that if you put them together they form one gigantic poster that can do battle with other gigantic posters. Personally though, I think the Blake Lively poster alone should bring all other marketing materials to its knees.

Robin Hood, the new retelling of the famous legend points its arrows at being a nitty-gritty throwback epic but misses its mark with too many characters and not enough story.

In this prequel version from the slam-your-fist-into-the-mud-team of director Ridley Scott and actor Russell Crowe, Crowe stars as Robin Lonstride, a 12th century archer in King Richard’s army who by way of action and accidents is mistaken for the knight Robert of Luxley. This gives him the opportunity to steal from the rich and give to the poor people of Nottingham, while King Phillip of France and evil-knight Godfrey (played by Mark Strong in his usual sneering jackal performance) plan to invade the shores of England.  

Director Scott, working from a script by Brian Helgelanger seems to be having shifts into what movie they want to portray, ending up with too many arrows and no sharp tips.

They give us one story about the gruff  and tough Crowe playing a solider of fortune and battling it out with Godfrey and his men, then Crowe plays it light and dashing with Maid Marian (played by Cate Blanchett as best as she can with the half-baked material), while both are getting too old to play screen heartrobes, and then Crowe’s Robin of the Hood is removed entirely and becomes a Tudorsesque battle royal about the new King John and his corruption of power.  

All the stories are well acted by the large cast of characters, especially by Oscar Issacs as King John, but when  the movie is title Robin Hood, it’s best to stick to one story about the title character and play it out from there.  

One major act of treason against the filmmaking gods is committed by Cinematographer John Mathieson, who compensates for the trite action sequences by using the zoom lens far too often. At times the off-putting technique is applied for no dramatic purpose or direction, making you feel like you’re on the sidelines instead of in battle.   

The real sparks of fun in Robin Hood come from his merry men played by Scott Grimes, Alan Doyle and Kevin Durand, who have quite a…merry time in Nottingham drinking honey mead and playing 12th century pop songs on their lutes. At this point though it’s the halfway mark of the film, and one would rather see their adventures in Nottingham then the creakiness that surrounds them.  

The adventure of Robin Hood is nowhere to be seen in this movie and instead much of the action seems to be from the stock footage pile of recent war epics, which is director Scott’s signature, but we’ve seen him be much more creative and exciting before. His so-called road show version cut of  Kingdom of Heaven shows how this can be done quite well and enthrallingly. Not forgetting to mention Gladiator and the fierce battles fought by Maximus, who, in comparison, makes Robin Hood look like a nervous, sausge-fingered archer at summer camp.   

So the legend begins for Robin Hood at the end of the movie, and we’re left wondering why so much time was spent on trumped-up preamble that misses the mark.   

Grade: C

The new trailer for Robin Hood proves it’s a tough business stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Robin from da Hood, played with convincing mean-face by Russell Crowe, trots his way into Nottingham and says, "Nuh uh" when he witnesses how a despotic sheriff is treating his peeps.

So he does what any other man in tights with a bow and arrow would do: he finds other men in tights with bows and arrows and forms a merry gang. Together they fight a smooth-headed Mark Strong, a formidable foe as Sir Godfrey, as Robin from Da Hood tries to get in Maid Marian’s (Cate Blanchett’s) panties. All of this is a lot more epic and romantic than I’m describing it, but you get the gist. Look folks, Ridley Scott directed the damn thing. You know what to expect. My words can’t do sweeping wide-shots justice.

Last month we reported that Mark Strong was considering playing Sinestro in Green Lantern, and now he’s apparently made up his GD mind. DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Goeffrey Johns revealed the news via his Twitter account the other day:

Back from an amazing trip to Green Lantern town a.k.a. New Orleans!! Ryan IS Hal. And Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro.

Kilowog, the Guardians, Oa…all breathtaking. The age of Green Lantern is upon us!!

He then went on to tweet:

In case you were unaware, Blake Lively is also starring in the Martin Campbell directed Green Lantern. Ryan Reynolds is doing something in it too. Something less attractive than Blake Lively. (Collider)

Those tissues aren’t for the tears. The new red band trailer for Kick-Ass tackles a subject very near and dear to all teenagers. The protagonist’s dedication to making regular spank bank donations leads him to a higher calling: kicking ass without the help of super powers.

I thought I’d be sick of more Kick-Ass footage, but the new trailer succeeds in its attempt to get me even more amped up. I’m thinking of stretching a pair of my neighbor’s pantyhose over my head and putting an end to crime. I’ll then be arrested for breaking into my neighbor’s house and stealing her pantyhose, a charge I’ll vehemently defend as a necessary evil.

The attractiveness of castmembers for Martin Campbell‘s upcoming Green Lantern is no longer in jeopardy. Reports last week that Jackie Earle Haley was the front-runner for the role of Sinestro have been debunked by the director. MTV asked Campbell about the Haley casting rumor and he responded,

"What? No. That ugly old thing?? No way. I’d sooner cast that hulk from Precious."

Well, he didn’t exactly say that. But he totally wanted to. You can tell. Check it out.

"No. That’s completely wrong. In fact, we’re in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro. He’s not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro. If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he’s very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life."

Mark Strong is on a hot streak. Between Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass, and Green Lantern (and rumored sequels), he’ll be Hollywood’s official villian (behind Jeff Zucker). Somewhere, Andy Garcia weeps. (MTV)

April 16th cannot get here fast enough. A new trailer for Kick-Ass was released today and it proves that you don’t need a super power to be a superhero. All you really need is a gun and a penchant for violence.

Mark Strong also appears as the villian who addresses the elephant in the room by comparing Nic Cage‘s Big Daddy to Batman. Now allow me to address another elephant. Mark Strong, did you steal Andy Garcia’s face?
