Set photos have revealed a first look at Foxx that point to the Ultimate Spider-Man version of Electro for inspiration. Or Mr. Freeze’s nutsack. Both are accurate estimations. Not pictured in these photos are Electro’s awesome costume that Foxx has mentioned in past interviews. Instead, we see Foxx dressed in a hoodie and overcoat stumbling through the streets of Manhattan — a look often referred to as “the Cuba Gooding, Jr.” (The Superficial)

“Marc Webb and all of those guys, they’re smart. They know that it has to make sense in 2013, so the suit is really slick. It’s actually black. It’s a new age.”

Chronicle’s Dane DeHaan was announced to have won the part when director Marc Webb tweeted: “Meet Harry Osborn. So excited to have him on board. @danedehaan.”

He’ll join the returning Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, as well as Jamie Foxx‘s Electro and Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane. DeHaan turned in an impressive performance in Chronicle as a troubled teen corrupted by super powers. It’s unclear what kind of work he’ll have to do in this film, but would prove a fine choice if he suits up as the Green Goblin in future sequels. (THR)

It’s great exposure and a great payday, but I’m worried the costume will be just a tad more ridiculous than dressing as Wanda. What price your shame, Mr. Foxx? What price your shame? (Variety)

The new Australian trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man gives us a glimpse of more the action that The Land Down Under demands. We’ve got Emma Stone thrown out a window, Spidey and the Lizard tickle-fighting as they fall to their deaths, football skills, and Curt Connors possibly masturbating at his desk. I’d expect that of Dylan Baker, but not you Rhys Ifans.

In addition to the action, we’re also given a glimpse of the mystery. Who is that raspy-voiced, shadowy figure demanding to know if Dr. Curt Connors told Peter the truth about his father. Is it Norman Osborne? Peter’s dad?? Denis Leary after a heavy smoking day??? All will be revealed when The Amazing Spider-Man opens in theaters on June 30th.

While NYC got Spider-Man himself in Andrew Garfield, we in Los Angeles ran a close second, scoring director Marc Webb, who introduced both the 3D trailer, and a five-minute, 2D “sizzle reel” that told the story of THIS Spider-Man using clips from the film.

While it would seem that the story of Spider-Man is old hat given that we’ve experienced three films in the past decade or so, Webb took pains to clarify that the film wasn’t interested in rehashing material covered by the Raimi/Maguire films. A new Spider-Man (Garfield) has a new love interest in Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone, who was beamed in via satellite from her screening in Rio de Janeiro), and he’s got a new set of problems in villain Dr. Connors, (Rhys Ifans).

What Webb stressed (and both the trailer and sizzle reel hinted at) was that this film tells us the story of what happened to Peter Parker’s parents, which is told through his relationship with his Aunt and Uncle, as well as his struggle with Dr. Connors, who was his father’s partner in science.

Other than that, the film focuses largely on a hipper-than-Tobey teenager who has a crush on Stone’s Stacy. Stacy’s father (Denis Leary) just happens to be the policeman tasked with hunting down Spider-Man, so the scenes between the two are filled with an honest tension that didn’t exist so much in the earlier films.

And that’s the story as told by the trailer. The real reveal here (the fate of Parker’s parents) is alluded to, but not demonstrated, though Webb touted that as a selling point of the film. Beyond that, Webb’s sensibilities coming from (500) Days of Summer make this film seem almost like an indie love story in much the same fashion that Christopher Nolan was able to make The Dark Knight feel like a crime film.

In short, the trailer suggested this film has enough heart and character development to appeal to those outside the fanboy set.

Story aside, how does the movie look?

It looks great. Webb stressed the use of 3D cameras in filming, not the “bullshit” conversion technique. Much has been made of the use of 3D as Spider-Man wings through New York, and the footage lives up to the hype. The action feels made for IMAX.

A big element of the trailer was a bombastic, epic score that made even these three minutes feel important. I felt that the original three films never hoped to be more than “cute,” and while this one appears very heartfelt (an awkward interaction early on between Peter and Stacy shows a soul that eludes most superhero films), it also feels like this is a story that’s asking to be told, rather than one that’s created.

While Columbia certainly wants to put its best foot forward with the trailer, including all the “money shots” that make the 3D seem worthwhile, it’s the more low-key moments that left me wanting more. In the theater lobby after the viewing, Sony execs were loudly celebrating a tweet from the audience that read something along the lines of “(Christopher) Nolan has found a rival in Webb.” While I don’t expect a rivalry or feud to break out any time soon, and I don’t think that Webb has the same resume that Nolan does yet, I understand the Tweeter’s excitement in seeing a filmmaker hit the mark in such a huge fashion.

Overall, it looks like a somewhat darker look at the webslinger. Here, Andrew Garfield‘s Peter is portrayed as more of a sensitive loner than Tobey Maguire‘s total nuuurd take on the character. It’s a little light on the action but we are privy to a bridge shot where something (most likely the Lizard) is throwing cars into the air with ease as well as a Spidey POV shot as he swings from Manhattan rooftops which looks like a really cool video game intro. Let’s hope those effects aren’t slated to appear in the final film.

Above are new set photos from The Amazing Spider-Man. They show either Andrew Garfield or his spider-double swinging through the refreshing NYC air with the help of Hollywood wire magic. Unlike many of the past Spider-Man set photos, these actually look pretty cool. With elegant moves like these, who needs Black Swan or the frigid White Swan? By the way Black Swan could totally be a Spider-Man villain. Not a good one, but maybe one your little sister would have bought the action figure of.

Heyman (“hey man!”) began his career working as an executive at Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures, and has transitioned into the far more glamorous world of having to take shitty notes from executives that you know will ruin everything, aka screenwriting. In seemingly more “official” news, we’ve got a somewhat obscured photo of the cast of X-Men: First Class in their costumes. It would appear that Professor X is standing. He could be in a very tall, backless wheelchair, but that’s pretty unlikely. Beyond that, it’s hard to know what to make of their outfits, except for January Jones as Emma Frost. She is looking pretty sharp. (Playlist)

Taylor Lautner look-alike and ABC Family regular Chris Zylka has signed up to shove around Peter Parker. Zylka will play Flash Thompson in the upcoming Spider-man reboot, which recently started rolling film. In the comics, Flash had a propensity to give Peter Parker grief while at the same time totally jonesing on Spider-man. Oh Flash, if only you knew they were the same person. Meet Peter Parker’s parents. Campbell Scott and Julianne Nicholson will play Spidey’s moms and pops in Sony’s reboot. Nicholson is best known for her role on “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and Scott is best known as always playing a struggling writer. Parker’s deceased parents are seldomly seen in the comic and have never been brought to the screen before. It’ unknown whether they will appear in flashback or prologue or a scene where Spider-Man goes to Robot Heaven with Optimus Prime.

Also joining the cast is a new villian played by Irfan Khan. His character is Van Atter, and it’s unknown if he’ll be super-powered or just a dick. Speculation is he will play a scientist along with Rhys Ifans’s Lizard. Not all Indians have to be doctors, you guys. Not cool. Not cool. (THR)

It looks like Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man isn’t quite the pimp we expected him to be. The Wrap reports that Mary Jane Watson will not appear in the Sony’s franchise reboot. Red-headed Watson appeared in the three previous films, but didn’t factor into the life of Peter Parker until later in the comics. They’ve decided to stay closer to that classic comic storyline with Spidey’ high school honey Gwen Stacy being his one and only.

As previously reported, Emma Stone will play Gwen Stacy, but now there’s new news that when Sony cast her, they didn’t know who she would play. They just knew that they wanted to exploit our collective geek crush by getting her. After casting, it was decided the red-headed Stone would play the blonde Stacy. Shortly after, an office production assistant was sent out to pick up a box of L’Oreal Superior Preference Dream Blonde.

Sony and Marc Webb have just reminded Sally Field that she’s not a spring chicken anymore in the nicest way possible. The Oscar-winner is in talks to join the Spider-Man reboot that is ramping up for a December start. It’s reported that she will play Martin Sheen wifey and Peter Parker mother-figure Aunt May. But what if this is a big misdirect?

Could it be that Spidey is teaming up with the Flying Nun this time around to take down the threat of the Lizard? Or perhaps, she’ll be the baddie. Look at the way she flies around with that glider wimple. That’s Oscorp tech if I’ve ever seen it. (THR)

If all goes as planned for the folks behind the upcoming Spider Man reboot, we’ll soon see Martin Sheen shot to death at the hands of an anonymous burglar. If we’re lucky, he might even utter a few blood-choked words of deathbed wisdom. Sheen is in the final round of talks to play Uncle Ben, Peter Parker’s former father figure-turned-corpse whose death prompts Parker to walk the streets at night in red latex. As a superhero, of course, not a whore.

Sheen will star alongside Andrew Garfield as Parker, Rhys Ifans as the film’s villain, the Lizard, and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Parker’s latest damsel in distress. Marc Webb is set to direct the reboot, with production currently slated to begin in December.

Now that Spider-Man has a love interest and a reptilian nemesis, it’s time to figure out who will play his comically gruff boss. J.K. Simmons owned the role of J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi‘s Spidey films, but won’t be returning for the high school-based reboot. Which means Hollywood’s silverhairs are all up for the part.

It’s reported that a dozen or so actors are being discussed for the part (which will inevitably go to Liam Neeson, everything goes to Liam Neeson), including "Mad Men’s" John Slattery and every cowboy movie ever’s Sam Elliott. Hopefully the search will continue because I can’t see either of these guys in the role. Slattery’s too pretty and Sam Elliott’s moustache (though awesome) is just too much for this film to handle. Personally, I’d like to see Mel Gibson in the role. He’s looking to trick us into liking him again and dude is seriously good at yelling. Like Olympics good at it.

Sony wants little young white boys. The studio is currently casting for miniature versions of Spider-man and The Lizard for their Spider-man reboot, which recently added Rhys Ifans as adult Lizard. Moviehole has the specs:

Sony wants a dark-haired Caucasian boy to play actor Peter Parker at age 4 to 6 years old . Ideally, the boy should look a little like Andrew Garfield. In addition, the studio’s on the hunt for an actor to play Billy Connors, the son of Dr. Curt Connor. Applicants need be between 8 and 11 years old.

Don’t flip your sh*t, I’m sure the kiddies won’t be a huge part of the storyline. They’ll most likely be featured in minimal flashbacks. I seem to remember that comic issue when Peter egged Billy’s house on Halloween and Curt took the belt to his son for fraternizing with lowlifes. Yeah, I definitely read that in a comic and didn’t manifest it subconciously to block out a traumatic childhood event.

Marvel wasn’t just going to let DC own the day by announcing Tom Hardy will be a villain in the next Batman. Nuh uh. They’ve just announced that recently cast Rhys Ifans will be playing Dr. Curt Connors a.k.a. The Lizard in Marc Webb‘s Spider-man reboot. Poor Dylan Baker. He had to keep his arm inside of his shirt for the previous Spider-man movies, pretending that he was an amputee, and he never even got the chance to turn into a reptile.

Sony has offered the villain role in the Spider-man reboot to Rhys Ifans. You may remember him as the slovenly roommate in Notting Hill, or a lot more things if you’re British. No word yet on exactly which villain he’ll be playing though. I’m getting a Green Goblin vibe from him, but I suppose he could also be Venom with the right black unitard. If Ifans does in fact play Green Goblin he already has experience creating his own aviation contraptions.

Sony Pictures will offer Easy A star Emma Stone the role of Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-man Reboot, Deadline is reporting. I imagine the actress will say yes, unless she hates the feel and smell of money. If this news is true, thank God they’ve knocked out one more casting decision.

Next one up is the role of Gwen Stacy, Spidey’s first love. The actresses currently in contention are Dianna Agron, Mia Wasikowska, Georgina Haig, and Dominique McElligott. My personal chose would be Agron, as her name is the easiest to spell and I’m sure I’ll be writing about Spider-man upwards of fifty thousand times over the next few years. Alright, she’s also got a smile that could melt cold hearts. I hope you’re happy. Now I’m emoting.

I hope you’re all well-rested because the casting search for Spider-man’s girlfriend has finally kicked off. We’re going to track this thing over the next few months until director Marc Webb and Sony cut through all the bullsh*t and send out an official press release. Oh you better believe there are going to be rumors galore that we’ll report on until you beg for mercy. But even then we won’t quit because this is Spider-man damnit! You NEED to know every. Single. The first batch of frontrunners to possibly share an on-screen kiss with Spider-man are Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Emma Roberts, Ophelia Lovibond, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Lily Collins. Haven’t heard of half of them? Yeah, well you hadn’t heard of Andrew Garfield either but he’s Spider-man now, isn’t he? My vote is for Lily Collins simply because she’s the spawn of Phil Collins. Andew Garfield has been officially for real seriously chosen as the new Spider-man/Peter Parker in the reboot to be directed by Mark Webb. We’ve reported all kinds of rumors and hearsay, but the studio made the official announcement today at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Words marked, Mark Webb. Garfield is starring in the upcoming David Fincher film The Social Network and Mark Romanek‘s next, Never Let Me Go opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan. He seems to be partial to directors who made a name for themselves in the music video and commercial world before transitioning into features.

Okay, so we can all stop worrying about the new Spider-man now. It’s Andrew Garfield. They start shooting in December. And don’t you DARE start asking about Mary Jane yet. I will lose my sh*t.

Marc Webb and Sony have finally selected a young actor to play Peter Parker from their list of young actors not quite right for the role of Peter Parker. According to a source at Blue Sky Disney Blog, Josh Hutcherson has been offered the role in Sony’s Spider-Man reboot and he has accepted. Casting has been in the works for some time and after extensive test shoots, Hutcherson has come out on top. Bear in mind that there hasn’t been an official press release from the studio at this time. So if this turns out to be wrong, pick a fight with Disney’s army of lawyers.

Apologies to Jamie Bell, Andrew Garfield, Frank Dillane, Logan Lerman, Alden Ehrenreich, and Anton Yelchin. You guys played a good game out there, but you still lost. No victory Baskin Robbins visit for you.

Sony still hasn’t decided who will take the lead in their unnecessary Spider-Man reboot, but they are at least a step closer. It’s reported that most members of the casting shortlist have been forced to wear tights for "camera tests" and definitely not some sick, sex thing for studio kicks in case that’s what you’ve heard. Nope, definitely for a camera test. Right, Deadline?

I’m told that the candidates whose screen tests were viewed Friday are:  Jamie Bell (the Billy Elliot star who wrapped the Kevin Macdonald-directed The Eagle of the Ninth) , Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin, Kick-Ass’s Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro). Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince) and Michael Angerano (Lords of Dogtown) are also in the final list that the studio is working from.

Ugh. C’mon, you guys. Just hurry up and pick one of the actors that people have heard about before. This is taking too long and we still need a few months worth of speculating who the villian will be and which girl from Twilight will play Mary Jane. (Hint: none of them.)

Michael Fassbender is slated to be Comic-Con royalty one way or another. After breaking out big in Inglourious Basterds and The Hunger, Fassbender is now being eyed both for Matthew Vaughn‘s X-Men: First Class and Sony/Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot. However, according to Showbiz411, he can only do one.

If he chooses X-Men, he’d know full well how f***ing magnets work as he’d be playing Magneto opposite James McAvoy’s Professor X. Should he choose the Spider-Man reboot, he’d play an unspecified villian who squares off against a teen-aged Peter Parker. I’d prefer to see him as Magneto, as he’s an all-around great character whose extreme actions you can sympathize with. The most compelling villain in the Spider-Man universe dresses like an octopus.

Over the last few months, director Marc Webb has been quietly meeting with young men. To "discuss" a "role" "in" the Spider-Man "reboot." Riiiiiiiight.

The casting shortlist for the coveted role of Peter Parker is Jamie Bell (Tin Tin, King Kong, Billy Elliot); Alden Ehrenreich – (Tetro); Andrew Garfield (The Social Network, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus); Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince); and Josh Hutcherson (Journey To The Center Of The Earth, Zathura).
