Scots look like Americans when they're backlit just right.

You know what city really looks like Philadelphia? Glasgow. Well, it does now that the producers of World War Z took out all the Scottish stuff and droped in a bunch of American stuff. The zombie flick has started filming on location in the Scottish city, with Brad Pitt‘s arrival creating quite a stir.

The Scottish location is the third stop on the World War Z roadshow. Living up to its title, segments have already been shot in Malta and Cornwall. Shooting will go until the end of the month, completing principal photography. After that, Marc Foster and company will have a cushy fifteen months or to really tighten up the footage. In fifteen months, they could probably go ahead and make two more movies if they really wanted to.

We’re still a ways off, but I smell prequels! World Wars X and Y, anyone?

‘World War Z’ Plot Revelation: It’s Not Really Like The Book At All

For starters, I don't remember Brad Pitt being in the book...at all.

Fans of the book will be disappointed, while those who haven’t read the book won’t weigh in, so the big reveal of the World War Z plot will probably come as a disappointment to everyone who has an opinion right now. Rather than breathe life and imagery into the dozens of oral retellings that the book consists of, which would admittedly be cost-prohibitive, the film will follow a much more traditional narrative, following Brad Pitt‘s Gerry Lane, a UN employee, as he races to stop the zombie outbreak.

That plotline doesn’t sound bad, but it seems to squander so much of what made the book unique. Of course, what makes the book unique is exactly what makes the book difficult to stick to in a film adaptation. I suppose a straightforward zombie story with World War Z’s thoughtful mythology is better than one without it, but it’s a little disappointing nonetheless that the studio and director Marc Foster are compromising, though it’s not surprising.

World War Z hits theaters December 21, 2012.
