FX To Split Into Comedy And Drama Channels?

Which side will YOU fall on?

Word on the streets of Tinseltown (ugh) is that FX is considering spinning its successful original programming into two different networks. FX would remain as the channel for your drama and more mature (pronounced “ma-tour”) viewers, whereas FXX would be created to accomodate those young drunken animals who like things like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League.

While the split is supposed to be along the lines of viewer age, rather than program content, it’s sounding like the drama stays on FX and the comedy goes to FXX, with dramedies like Wilfred and Louie being cut in half in an ill-advised attempt at fairness.

This change isn’t purported to be immediate, so if you’re crying and rocking back and forth thinking about the prospect of having to memorize a new station number, take a deep breath and enjoy these precious few moments before everything goes to shit.

He's gone Full Chappelle.

Fans of Louie now know the deep pang that Tom Petty so eloquently captured in “The Waiting.”

FX has placed the well-received sitcom on hiatus until May of 2014. But before you fly into bouts of rage toward the network, know that they are only honoring Louis C.K.‘s wishes. The comedian has total autonomy over the show and feels he needs that time to preserve any quality. Especially now that Fake Louie Episodes has called him out so well. Says C.K.:

“The last three seasons have been this surge of fun and work and stories and it’s been great, but I want the show to keep getting better,” Louis C.K. said in a conference call with reporters today. “That’s my goal, and I don’t want it to be making the donuts, I want it to be something that comes from somewhere important and stays funny. It’s a luxury I asked for … season four is my job right now, but I’m going to take a whole lot of time to turn it in.

“I want season four to go somewhere new, even if it’s only a slight shift.”

Like having his character be slightly balder and doughier, for instance.

But still, 2014 is a long time from now. A really long time. So many things can happen and change in that time. We could outgrow the tone of the show. Or the economy could take a dive, changing how we watch television. I’m not a betting man, but I wouldn’t bet on seeing Doug Stanhope return to guest star.
What kind of asshole gives all his money to charity? For shame!

Here’s a story that will make you upchuck your eggnog. After making over $1 million in just 12 days with his own online comedy special, Louis C.K. is giving $780,000 of the profits to employees and various charitable organisations, and keeping only $220,000 for himself. What an asshole.

I felt uncomfortable about having that much money, so I kind of broke it in four pieces. Two fifty went back to pay for the special, like I replenished my company. Another two fifty went to people that work for me, that work really hard. I gave them all bonuses. And then I took another 280 thousand and donated it to a bunch of charities.

Anyone who feels “uncomfortable” around money is a god damn communist, just like those Muppet sons of bitches. Felt bastards.

I never viewed money as being “my money” I always saw it as “The money” It’s a resource. if it pools up around me then it needs to be flushed back out into the system.

Oh, look! The guy who makes shit jokes thinks he’s an econ professor, now. The only system that needs flushing is the septic system, which has been over run by Louis C.K.‘s liberal bile.

See, this is why I only watch comedians like Jay Leno. Now there’s a man who knows what to do with his money. I sleep better at night knowing that the bulk of his cash is going to mantain a fleet of classic cars rather than to help some foreign kids get clean drinking water.

The kid's disposition is closer to a T-1000 than Cousin Oliver.

Oftentimes a sitcom will add an adorable child to the proceedings in order to goose ratings or introduce some broader appeal to the show’s palette. As the above clip shows, this is definitely not the case for the next episode of Louie, airing this Thursday, September 1st, at 10:30 PM ET/PT on FX. This visit from a niece is unlikely to win over your mom (unless she’s already a Louie fan), since the kid’s disposition is closer to a T-1000 than Cousin Oliver.

This week on a special one-hour Louie, Louis C.K. heads to entertain the troops in Afghanistan, where he finds himself facing hostile fire, Middle Eastern people, and trouble getting laid. Like he needed to travel for that. We have both of those things in NY too. Especially over by the Comedy Cellar.

And on Wilfred, Ryan begins to fear that his friendship with Wilfred is self-destructive, and finds a kindred spirit in Dwight Yoakam, who can also see the dog as a pervert in a costume. However, I’d think a friendship with Yoakam would be even more self-destructive.

All new episodes of Wilfred and Louie air Thursday, August 25th at 10pm ET/PT on FX.

Will Seth Rogen be able to capture the essence of "Dirty Randy?"

It’s been a pretty fruitful weekend for FX. First, they announced that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Wilfred, and Louie all got picked up for an additional season, with Sunny actually garnering a two-season pickup. Now, news comes out that The League will get a guest appearance from one of the biggest comedic stars in Hollywood, Seth Rogen.

Rogen will be a playing a character that has been referenced on the show before. A gentleman by the name of Dirty Randy. Dirty Randy is a friend of last season’s Raffi. Rogen’s character is a porno location scout and is known to clean up the locations after shooting is done.

Seth Rogen has made a name for himself by consistently playing a slacker man-child in most every role, so it would be nice to see him go over-the-top with the character of Dirty Randy, if only for the sake of variety. I mean, how conservatively do you want to play a character named Dirty Randy, anyway?

Don't read if you like homeless people.

The new season of Louie on FX began with the episode “Pregnant.” Coming up, the double episode “Bummer/Blueberries” features two sexual fantasies of Louis C.K. “Bummer” has Louie (C.K.) becoming desirable to a woman after he goes dark and brooding. “Blueberries” has a teacher from his kids’ school solicit him for casual sex, and grocery shopping.

“Neither of those things ever happened,” C.K. admitted in a conference call with the media. “They’re both total fantasies. I mean, there’s a lot of very attractive, well put together women in show business, like assistants and agents that I’ve met, people that work on TV shows. The few times that I’ve reached out to one of them, it’s been a laughable gulf between us. So this was a fantasy of what if somebody just wanted to spend some time with me for the hell of it.”

‘Louie’ Season Two Promises To Be Pride-Effacing

The incident that triggers Louie’s fascinated attitude involves a homeless man getting hit by a bus right in front of him. C.K. wrote the death so graphically for purely artistic reasons.

“The reason his head comes off is because I wanted to make it clear that there’s nothing I could have done to help,” C.K. said. “If he had just gotten hit by the truck, then I would’ve stayed there and made sure an ambulance came. Once the head comes off of a total stranger, you pretty much don’t have any obligation anymore. So that’s just something I dreamt up.”

Consulting producer Pamela Adlon had a hand in the “Blueberries” story. “The story with the mom at the school and the blueberries, it’s something that Pamela Adlon and I, last summer when I first got picked up for a second season, two minutes after they told me I had a second season, I thought, ‘Shit, I need more stories.’ The two of us started talking about funny energies and funny notions. I think we wrote that story together in just five minutes of hitting it back and forth.”

If you haven’t gotten on board with Louie yet, now is the time. C.K. has thrown continuity out the window. “One thing about the show is if you miss the whole first season, it really doesn’t matter. This season has absolutely no bearing. It’s like a whole other product. I don’t have a brother this season. I have two sisters that probably won’t be in the third season. It’s just a whole different group of people. We live in a different apartment than we used to. It’s all different stuff.”

Louie airs Thursdays at 10:30 on FX.

Every bit as good (if not better) than the “Louie” we were introduced to a year ago.

The first season of “Louie” gave us a new style of television comedy to look forward to each week. It was dark, blunt, and funny as hell. Episodes were dramatic and depressing at one moment — making us feel like nothing less than shit — then raunchy and hilarious the next, completely reversing our expectations and daring us to predict what might happen next.

And the real beauty of the show? Each episode was a standalone story, allowing creator Louis C.K. to craft these bipolar vignettes one by one, free from constrictive storylines or character obligations.

That’s partly why the show’s second season — set to premiere this week — is every bit as good (if not better) than the “Louie” we were introduced to a year ago. It can be about anything or anyone, offering up new characters and plotlines at will to be warped and analyzed and skewered by C.K.’s discerning comedic style. And it does. In the first episode alone, we jump from kids to death to family to neighbors and back to kids again. It would almost be too much if the whole thing wasn’t anchored firmly in place by C.K.’s never-ending stream of outsider analysis. He’s a tour guide on a trip through the realest portions of life, pointing out the absurdities and the contradictions and the shitty-ness around us that we all know so well but can’t quite vocalize.

Of course, that’s not for everyone. C.K. is just as stark and realistic as ever, maybe even more so, and all that talk of fading dreams and aging bodies can be a real downer. But that’s the point. Life can suck, the world can suck, and there’s not a whole lot you can do about it except savor the things that don’t suck and deal (preferably through laughter) with the things that do. It’s a shitty, messy, crap-fuck world, but goddamn if there aren’t a few spots of sunshine hidden under it all, and goddamn if Louis C.K. isn’t the man to show them to you.

The Screen Junkies DVD Rundown for June 21st, 2011

It’s new DVD day, which means it’s time for the Screen Junkies DVD Rundown. This week, we’ve got a lot to choose from, including my own personal favorite, “Rocko’s Modern Life.” Also, there’s “Medium,” a show rivaled only by “Home Improvement” for predictable plot lines. With so many great choices, it’s almost enough to make you forget that we’re all marching slowly toward death. Almost.

At any rate, enjoy this week’s DVD Rundown!

Louis C.K. introduces an effective form of birth control.

There’s a new promo for the second season of FX’s “Louie,” and it’s as sparse and awkward as the show itself. It’s just Louis CK, the two actresses that play his daughters, a couch, and the Cooper STD font. Still, it’s oddly effective and a fitting example of the off-kilter charm of the show. We’re not given a sense of where the new season will go, but I think it’s safe to say it will involve sadness and masturbation. And masturbating while sad.

In the promo, Louis CK does his best to pass on the info that the new season premieres June 23rd at 10:30pm on FX. All the while, the actress who plays his young daughter is jumping on the couch and slapping him in the face. Man, is she lucky that Alec Baldwin isn’t the star of this show. Dude would house her.

“Wilfred” premieres June 23rd at 10pm. The story follows a super-depressed Elijah Wood as he befriends his neighbor’s dog, whom for some reason only he can see as a man in a dog suit. Well, we can also see him as a man in a dog suit. Does that mean we’re all super-depressed?

“Louie” comes back for a second season of getting pissed off at things directly after “Wilfred” at 10:30pm.

And “Rescue Me” returns for its final season at 10pm on July 12th. After that, Adam Ferrara will be absent from television until the next time that Denis Leary has a show. It looks like the second time's the charm for comedian Louie C.K. Collider is reporting that FX has renewed his show, "Louie", for another 13 episode season.

After striking out with his first sitcom, "Lucky Louie", C.K. has found a winning formula. Although "Louie" has been uneven and somewhat clunky, it seems to be getting better as it goes along. Besides, the show could consist of Louie C.K. sh*tting on a bunch of war orphans, and it would still be funnier than 99.9% of the crap on TV.
