Everything is snapping into place for the Warner Bros. Lego movie. The plot is still steeped in mystery, but a few key hires have been made and it sounds like we’ll get a pretty awesome picture, visually, at the very least… in 2014.

The Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller have re-written the script and brought in Robot Chicken‘s Chris McKay to direct. That, and the animation house behind the Happy Feet films, Animal Logic, has been hired to create the world comprised of Legos. Casting will begin in January for the film which will be roughly 80% animation and 20% live action. What a relief to the animators that they’re not going the stop-motion route. It can sometimes be a pain in the ass to separate those bricks, even with the help of a butter knife. (Empire)

14 Lego men died in the construction of this vehicle.

Hollywood is abuzz with the released photos and video of this 10,000 piece sandcrawler replica. Well, it’s not, but this is movie-related and pretty cool, so we’re sharing it with the world. Viva Star Wars.

In the 9-month construction time, Marshal Banana (best name ever?) was able to include remote controlled steering, a complex lighting system, and a scaled-down JarJar Binks that the vehicle can run over. And over and over. I made the last part up, but the first two features are real.

Johnny Depp is the latest to get the LEGO treatment, specifically for his role as swishbuckler Captain Jack Sparrow.

Natalie Portman pretends she knows how to do ballet in LEGOs. Conan O’Brien insists we stop calling him “Coco” in LEGOs. Keanu Reeves took the red pill and realized the shocking truth that all humans are now made of LEGOs. Whenever’s a movie, a TV show, a video game, or a TV movie based on a video game is released, the great LEGO gods decide there must be a separate but blocky and yellow-faced version too.

So it’s no surprise that Johnny Depp is the latest to get the LEGO treatment, specifically for his role as swishbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. (See image to the right.) Depp will most likely shit reconstructable bricks when he learns that it took more than 150,000 blocks and 200 man hours to complete builder Erik Varszegi’s tribute. It’s all part of the lead-up to Manhattan’s American International Toy Fair, where hopefully you can get that awesome little LEGO Wizard I used to love. His wand glowed-in-the-dark, a feat I’m sure Capt. Brick Sparrow cannot top.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sails into theaters this May. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the duo behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, have been tasked with bringing the building blocks to life.Although few details have emerged, the film is being described as an "action adventure set in a LEGO world." While some might decry the idea as yet another example of Hollywood running out of original ideas, I, for one, welcome the Lego movie.
