Godzilla managed to perform strongly at the box office and did generally well critically, so the question of a sequel was more “if” than “when.” Yesterday, Legendary Pictures gave us the “when.” June 8, 2018.

It’s a long way off, and studios normally like to crank these things out before audiences catch on to the next big thing and leave giant lizard movies in the dust. So why the long lead time?

Because director Gareth Edwards has to go make the second Star Wars film first. And those are fairly high-profile films, so maybe they don’t want to rush him? As big as Godzilla was, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the money that Star Wars can bring in across various platforms.

So it all comes down to money. Remember when Star Wars and Godzilla films were about the art? I don’t, but I assume they may have been at one point.

While King Kong did pretty well for itself at the box office, many remember it as an oddly humanized epic film that never really seemed to end. However, ask people what stand out most about the film, and they’ll likely tell you it’s the scene where the gang goes to Skull Island to capture Kong and encounter about million interesting animals on the way.

Legendary Pictures ain’t no dummies, so they’ve chosen to focus on this aspect of the King Kong origin story (assuming there even ARE other aspects) with Skull Island, having given the world its first glimpse at Comic-Con. However, the teaser didn’t convey much, and didn’t have a director. Now, Deadline is reporting that Legendary wants Attack the Block‘s Joe Cornish to step up and helm this thing.

No word yet on what he thinks, but this would certainly be a great stage to prove that he can make the leap from cute indie director to blockbuster God, like both Sam Raimi and Marc Webb have done with Spider-Man.

A sequel? A gritty reboot with King Kong as a troubled loner?

We don’t have the trailer for this one, as it hasn’t been shared online, but from the responses at Comic-Con, the trailer itself wouldn’t help you understand this project any better anyway. During the Legendary Pictures panel, after Guillermo del Toro had left the stage, the production company ran a brief clip that showed a tropical island.

Many thought it was a teaser for del Toro’s long-gestating At the Mountains of Madness, and some others thought it was Jurassic World for some reason. Nope. Cue the roar of the mighty King Kong, then show the title…

Skull Island.

Then end the trailer, with no one knowing what they just saw, but they know that it’s coming November 4th, 2016.

Legendary Pictures still thinks there is a metric shitton of money to be found among the indoor kids, as they’re still getting after a World of Warcraft movie that will undoubtedly be so epic in scope as to make Lord of the Rings look like Hotel for Dogs.

The guy who wrote Blood Diamond, Charles Leavitt, is polishing a second draft, and the producers are looking for a director who can turn this weird little world into something presentable onscreen. May I suggest Michael Bay? May I always suggest Michael Bay for every movie currently in development?

The project has been rattling around for years, but probably has taken a backseat due to the wide scope and undoubtedly astronomical budget in spite of its decidedly niche appeal.

Unless it’s all greenscreened, which would keep costs down and probably get the target market to wet its collective trousers.

Everything’s coming up Idris Elba. “The Wire” actor has enjoyed numerous successes since the HBO show ended and it looks like there’s a role waiting for him if he wants to play with Guillermo Del Toro and giant robots for four months.

Most recently seen in Thor, Elba is also rumored to maybe work with Tarantino on Django Unchained. Though there have been zero confirmations regarding that. Details are vague right now about Pacific Rim. If he does join, he and Charlie Hunnam will help protect Earth from invading monsters. Tom Cruise might help out too. You saw the way he handled Rain Man‘s freakouts. Killing evil creatures from another world should be a walk in the park compared to that. (The Wrap)

The story of Jackie Robinson could obviously make a pretty compelling movie. And the folks at Legendary Pictures must agree, since they’ve put a Robinson biopic in development, despite the fact that everyone from Spike Lee to Robert Redford has attempted and failed to get one made. Now it’s producer Thomas Tull who’s at bat (ha ha!). Here he is on the project:

“We are deeply honored and grateful to be able to bring the Jackie Robinson story to audiences around the world. The legacy he left on history, society and the sport of baseball is one that will never be forgotten, and we are pleased to tell this amazing story of a true American hero.”

Isn’t it refreshing to see a Hollywood bigshot cut loose and say what’s on his mind like that? I can’t wait for this movie to come out! (Deadline)

This seems like a bad idea. Roland Emmerich's attempt to bring Toho's monster to American shores was terribly goofy and has really soured the public's need to see another film. For that reason, Legendary wants to make it clear that this movie will not be a sequel to that movie.
