Lars Von Trier, the director who got banned from Cannes for not being as critical of the Nazis as one would hope, has turned his weird, disturbing eyes to the United States.

The word is that controversial working on a horror film that is set in Detroit, and pits a man against his own demons. Honestly, you don’t have to set a film in Detroit to pit a man against his own troubled self. You can do that in Hilton Head, Jerusalem, or Melbourne. If you’re going to set a film in Detroit, use the scary stuff that’s already there. Like the feral dogs, the abandoned blocks of houses, or the city’s bankruptcy filing as a script.

Lars Von Trier is afraid to fly, but that probably just means he’ll take a speedboat over from Denmark, which would probably be the most bad ass thing in the world. Unfortunately, I made it up, and there’s no indication he’ll be taking a speedboat anywhere.

Yet.

Lars Von Trier, who’s never been accused of having a light hand when it comes to his subject matter, has managed to out do the intensity of Dancer in the Dark, and the starkness of Dogville simply by putting out a movie about sex that’s really, really long.

Five hours long. Broken into two releases.

The biggest tragedy here is that the film won’t be ready for consideration for the Cannes film festival this year, but hopefully that bad news is offset by the fact that there will be a whole lot of male nudity, or “dicks” if you will, in the five-hour jambaroo.

Despite the offbeat nature of this, and all his films, Von Trier continues to pull talent such as Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman, Connie Nielsen, and Christian Slater.

Those reports of Shia LaBeouf putting it in a real girl were all lies. Originally, we were told that Lars von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac would feature its stars (LaBeouf, Uma Thurman, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard) having real onscreen sex instead of just wiggling around awkwardly until they come into a sock. Then, there were reports that the film would employ body doubles and visual effects. However, The Hollywood Reporter has discovered what is actually planned. It does not involve Andy Serkis dressing up in a penis costume, sadly. :(

Producer Louise Vesth filled in the details. “We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post we will digital-impose the two. So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles.”

This is easily the most perverse use of Forrest Gump technology.

You guys, Shia LaBeouf is gonna get sooooo laid!

During an interview with MTV, Shia LaBeouf confirmed that he will indeed be working with director Lars von Trier on his next project, Nymphomaniac. Not only that, but he also revealed that all of the film’s sex scenes will be completely unsimulated, which, of course, means that LaBeouf will basically be getting paid to have real sex with his co-stars in front of the entire crew.

“It is what you think it is. There’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says, we’re doing [the sex] for real. And anything that is ‘illegal’ will be shot in blurred images. But other than that, everything is happening,” LaBeouf said during the interview. (Via)

No word on what else Von Trier has planned. Probably some butt-play though.

Earlier this year, director Lars Von Trier caused a bit of a stink at the Cannes Film Festival by claiming he sympathized to a small extent with Adolf Hitler. And by “bit of a stink,” I mean he was banned from the festival despite an apology and an explanation that the remarks were a joke gone wrong. But in a recent interview with GQ, the director changed course and un-apologized for the remarks, although he still maintains he was joking.

I’m not sorry… I’m sorry that I didn’t make it clear that it was a joke. But I can’t be sorry for what I said—it’s against my nature… I don’t think there is a right or wrong thing to say. I think that anything can be said. That is very much me. The same with film—anything can be done in a film. If it can be thought in the human mind, then it could be said and it could be seen on a film. Of course you get troubles for it afterwards, that’s for sure, but that doesn’t make it wrong. To say I’m sorry for what I said is to say I’m sorry for what kind of a perso I am, I’m sorry for my morals, and that would destroy me as a person. It’s not true. I’m not sorry. I am not sorry for what I said. I’m sorry that it didn’t come out more clearly. I’m not sorry that I made a joke, but I’m sorry that I didn’t make it clear that it was a joke. But I can’t be sorry for what I said—it’s against my nature.

I think he’s trying to say he’s not sorry. At any rate, while it’s probably a bad idea to joke around about Hitler, I understand what he’s trying to say. And to be honest, after watching the following video, you’ll probably find yourself sympathizing with Hitler as well.

It's The End Of The World As We Know It In 'Melancholia' Trailer

Lars Von Trier is famous for making movies that are impeccably shot, memorably acted, and depressing as hell. And so it appears to be in this new trailer for Melancholia, his new disaster/depression movie starring Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgård, Udo Kier, and others.

Even more than the last trailer, this one shows the movie’s gorgeous cinematography and allows you to see a little more of the celestial action in the movie, about a second planet (named “Melancholia“) crashing into our planet (named “Earth“). It also begins with the inspiring words “we are alone, there is only life on Earth.” A happy thought to kick off your long weekend with!

Uwe Boll: “The Tree Of Life Is A Piece Of Sh*t” http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/uwe-boll-the-tree-of-life-is-a-piece-of-sht/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/uwe-boll-the-tree-of-life-is-a-piece-of-sht/#comments Thu, 30 Jun 2011 23:34:28 +0000 Fred Topel http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=218697 He also thinks Lars von Trier is a retard.

The post Uwe Boll: “The Tree Of Life Is A Piece Of Sh*t” appeared first on Screen Junkies.

Oh yeah, I went there. I asked the world’s most notorious director, Uwe Boll, what he thought of the most contested, debated art film of the year. It doesn’t even matter whether I liked The Tree of Life or not. I knew the director of Alone in the Dark and In the Name of the King would have something entertaining to say about Terrence Malick.

He also had some things to say about Michael Bay and Lars von Trier, important movies about African genocide and the holocaust, and we also mention his latest movie, Bloodrayne: The Third Reich, on DVD and Blu-ray July 5.

Q: You famously fought your critics in a boxing match and proved you were tougher than them. That doesn’t necessarily prove you’re a better filmmaker than they say you are, so how will you prove that?

UB: [Laughs] I think with more movies like Rampage for example or Darfur, other genres I started doing the last few years, more reality based movies also. I think I proved with a few movies already that are better than House of the Dead or Alone in the Dark, yeah? On the other hand, I also always said genre is genre. If you make a Bloodrayne: The Third Reich, you have to deliver what people are expecting, like action, gore, sex. With this movie now we did that, but it’s also clear you’re not getting an Oscar nomination for it.

Q: Would you like to win an Oscar one day.

UB: [Pouts] Absolutely. No, to say I don’t care, A, I would never get it but B, of course it’s good, it helps movies. A lot of movies got maybe no attention. You saw with The Hurt Locker for example, it tanked in the movie theaters but then it got the Oscar and a lot of people watched it on DVD and everything. It’s sometimes a very good thing for a movie.

Q:  When you look at your own films, can you tell what’s different than other films?

UB: Yeah, I can see it. I think I’m not an easy director to write about because it’s a wide variation of movies I did, so you cannot really lock me down to one genre or one way to make movies. I always try not to make the style “an Uwe Boll” movie. The style is what the story is giving me basically. When I do a Darfur movie about the genocide in Sudan or the Auschwitz movie, I have a totally different approach as I would for an action movie. If people watch it they will feel that.

Brad Pitt's Kids Need A Good Belting In 'Tree Of Life' Clip

Q: What did you think of The Tree of Life?

UB: I hated it.

Q: Why?

UB: I totally hated that movie because I feel as a filmmaker that besides the fact that Terrence Malick did some great visuals on some movies, also on The New World, like the opening of that movie was really good but then he completely lost it. I think Tree of Life is a piece of shit. Totally, and I think Sean Penn is ridiculous in it, like walking around in the elevator. It’s nothing. This is the thing. It’s so overrated because it’s Terrence Malick. Same as Lars von Trier’s movies. I like breaking the Waves. After that was all crap. The thing is he gets all the Hollywood stars, “Oh, I want to work with him” and they don’t know what kind of retard he is. I think the same with Terrence Malick. I think Terrence Malick is one of the overrated directors of all time.

Q: Is that just because it doesn’t have a story and it’s more impressionistic?

UB: Absolutely. You have to tell a story that you get a connection to something. When he starts doing after 25 minutes a National Geographic break where you see volcanoes and planets coming together. Then his dinosaur episode with Jurassic Park. You think well, what’s going on with him? What is wrong with wrong with the guy? I was not engaged to keep watching. If I would have known how this ends, I would have walked out. But I watched the whole movie because I wanted to see how it ends also. The end was I think the most pathetic thing, when they’re all at the beach hugging each other. It was fucking disastrous. It was a complete disaster and it shows also that a lot of stars have no taste. Like Sean Penn, Brad Pitt have no taste what a good movie is. They trusted the director but you have to have your own brain. I’m very mad right now because I want to do a bail out movie about the financial crisis where a guy is losing everything and then he starts killing the investment bankers. I did various offers to stars and they passed on it. So CAA gave it a good reader’s review, so they’re supporting us but William Morris gave it a bad reader review. Like I also watch Matt Damon in The Adjustment Bureau, also a piece of shit movie. It was a disaster. It was a complete disaster and a guy like Matt Damon should feel that, that this story is nothing. It’s like a mini Matrix in the normal world but it makes no sense because that agency who’s changing it all, who is that? What was the plan of these guys? Who pays them? It’s totally absurd because that agency is doing everything but not doing anything basically. Also it’s a very flat movie and I think with The Tree of Life, this was for me an embarrassment and it gets hyped up because of Terrence Malick and I didn’t like it.

Q: Well, I knew from his other movies that he was experimental.

UB: Right, because his other movies you get the feeling he tries to tell a story and cannot do it. But this was poor experimental. You cannot tell me you were not bored to death while you watched The Tree of Life.

You might remember reading about Lars Von Trier‘s Nazi joke controversy and subsequent apology at the Cannes Film Festival. Well, it turns out that apologizing apparently isn’t enough, sinc the League Du Cannes have declared Von Trier “persona non grata,” which basically means he’s banned from the premises. Here’s the official statement, delivered to a group of about 50 people holding pitchforks and torches:

“The Festival de Cannes provides artists from around the world with an exceptional forum to present their works and defend freedom of expression and creation. The board of directors profoundly regrets that this forum has been used by Lars von Trier to express comments that are unacceptable, intolerable, and contrary to the ideals of humanity and generosity that preside over the very existence of the festival. The Board of Directors firmly condemns these comments and declares Lars von Trier a persona non grata at the Festival de Cannes, with effect immediately.”

There you have it. It’s not known if Von Trier’s persona non grata status is just for this year, indefinite, or what. It’s really too bad he can’t use the David Bowie excuse of “that wasn’t a Nazi salute, I was just waving.” (Deadline)

Lars Von Trier has a lot to apologize for. His movies are provocative, politically incorrect, and other euphemisms for “offensive.” His latest Melancholia, recently premiered at Cannes to mostly good reviews – a chunk of good he wasted no time in plowing through when during a press conference he referred to himself as a “Nazi.” Here’s a quote from the press conference, in which Von Trier does his best Mel Gibson impersonation:

“For a long time I was a Jew and I was happy to be a Jew, then I met Susanne Bier [fellow Danish director and this year's Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film] and I wasn’t so happy. But then I found out I was actually a Nazi. My family was German. That also gave me pleasure. What can I say? I understand Hitler. I sympathize with him a bit. I don’t mean I’m in favor of World War II and I’m not against Jews, not even Susanne Bier. In fact I’m very much in favor of them. All Jews. Well, Israel is a pain in the ass [pause] … How can I get out of this sentence? OK, I’m a Nazi.”

This caused the predictable uproar, with the heads of the Cannes Film Festival demanding an explanation. So, in probably the most surprising development of this story, Von Trier has actually apologized:

“If I have hurt someone this morning by the words I said at the press conference, I sincerely apologize. I am not anti-semitic or racially prejudiced in any way, nor am I a Nazi.”

Von Trier was then quoted as saying “don’t have a cow, man!” before speeding off on his skateboard. (Deadline)

Cinema’s leading annoying man Lars Von Trier made a movie in 2003 called The Five Obstructions. In it, he challenges filmmaker Jorgen Leth to remake his short film The Perfect Human five times under various obstructing circumstances. For instance, Leth is challenged to remake his movie with no shot lasting more than 12 frames, then in an animated form, etc.

Now, in exciting news for anyone who appreciated seeing Larry David irritating Martin Scorsese on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Von Trier is making another version of The Five Obstructions, this time with Scorsese instead of Leth. No additional details, such as which of Scorsese’s movies is getting the obstructionist treatment, have been given – although it’s apparently widely rumored that it will be Taxi Driver. The two directors both have movies coming out this year – Von Trier’s Melancholia and Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret. Hey, remember that rumor from a few years ago that Lars Von Trier was going to do a remake or a sequel to Taxi Driver with Scorsese’s blessing? I’m really glad this is happening instead. Lars Von Trier‘s Antichrist follow-up, Melancholia, looks like it won’t leave you any less bummed out but it does seem like it won’t make theater-goers vomit. Which is usually a plus. The film stars Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg as sisters who rub one another the wrong way while a newly revealed planet barrels toward Earth on a collision course. Will this dysfunctional family collide with one another in the face of this threat? Or will they shatter to pieces?? Only in the world of weirdo Dane Lars Von Trier would The Nymphomaniac be the more commercially viable of his two preferred titles. It should also be of little surprise that this film explores a woman’s “erotic birth.” What IS surprising is that the “birth” is actually metaphorical, so Von Trier’s prop guy won’t have to go hunting for sexy placentas or anything. Why didn’t he use the word “awakening” instead of “birth” to clear up any confusion? Cause Lars Von Trier has never done anything in his life to clear up confusion, and he sure as shit isn’t about to start now.

No further plot details are available about The Nymphomaniac, but as mentioned before, it was deemed a more commercial film than Dirt in Bedsores (his other title that was being shopped), so thank God for small miracles. His next film, Melanchiolia, demonstrates individuals’ reactions to the end of the world, which is in keeping with the tone of most every other movie he has made and will be hitting south France in May.

The female lead for The Nymphomaniac has not been identified, but if Von Trier wants to have (SPOILER ALERT!) Bjork executed again, I won’t object. (Playlist)

Mitch Hurwitz, having decided that his string of failed sitcoms still represent too much popular support, has decided to direct and produce a remake of a film from the only person capable of making a less popular film in America than Hurwitz: Dutch director Lars Von Trier.

So what will happen when the juggernaut behind “Sit Down, Shut Up” and “Running Wilde” co-opts the laugh behind Dogville and Dancer in the Dark? Unprecedented popular acceptance, that’s what!

The project actually sounds pretty promising. The Boss of It All focuses on the owner of a company that pretends he has a boss above him so that he will not be held accountable for conveying bad news to his employees. However, when the owner sells the company, the purchasers would like to meet the “boss of it all.” Do you know what ensues then? That’s right. Hijinks.

The project has been in development for almost a year now, with no cast announced, but Hurwitz has always had a knack for casting, so those decisions will lie in good hands. What does this mean for the long-anticipated Arrested Development” movie that Hurwitz has been promising for almost two years now? I got some news for you. There isn’t going to be an “Arrested Development” movie. Maybe your children’s children will see one in which we get a cryogenically frozen David Cross and a 67 year-old Michael Cera still playing an aloof, befuddled teenager, but that’s as close as we’ll get in our lifetime. And that’s a guarantee.*(The Wrap)

*I’m hoping this reverse jinx works and we get an announcement tomorrow that the “AD” movie has been greenlit and all parties are on board.

Director Lars Von Trier in the master of making bleak, depressing movies that make you question the value of his art as entertainment. So it follows that his movies would be hot properties at any movie studio. And now, one of those studios, Magnolia, has picked up Von Trier’s latest film, entitled Melancholia. The movie is about the end of the world, with a flashback structure showing how it happened after an opening depicting the actual end. Bad marketing, Von Trier — everyone knows you put the Apocalypse at the END of the movie, so the rubes will stay until the end to see it. This way you’re shooting your bloody load right at the beginning. I like you, Lars, but you need to learn how to give the people what they want, like you did with Dogville. The movie stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier. (via The Playlist)
