There’s no dark, popular work of fiction director Tim Burton won’t ruin with a huge-budget adaptation, whether it’s Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Alice In Wonderland. He likes to leave his gothic, brooding mark on any story he can, which is why it makes sense that Burton and actor Josh Brolin (True Grit) are currently developing The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Warner Bros. Based on the 1831 book Hunchback by Victor Hugo, Brolin would presumably star as “hunchy” himself, Quasimodo. For some reason, Brolin wants to give horribly ugly another try after Jonah Hex.

It’s got everything a Tim Burton could want: a lonely, deformed outcast living in a dark bell tower, who fights a ton of soldiers in a tragic love story. I can picture the Hot Topic merchandise already. Of course, Burton’s involvement depends on the quality of the script, which is being written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes). However, this story seems really right for Burton to over-produce, so my question is: how big a part will Johnny Depp have? (Hollywood Reporter)
