Carlito, who is building his retirement fund, can’t say no and all of hte deals don’t go down as planned. This ends poorly for Carlito, who was inches away from tasting true freedom before his past came back to take him out.

Angelo “Snaps” Provolone – Oscar

Provolone promises his father on his deathbed that he’ll give up the life and go straight. His plan is to get into a legal version of crime — banking. However, when he realizes that the bankers aren’t giving him a good deal, he decides to stick to the world of illegal racketeering. What a half-hearted attempt. If I were his dad I would haunt the crap out of him.

Steve Carell stars as a sadsack who befriends Keira Knightley, instead of just hitting the orgy scene with her. The two make a pact to help one another reunite with loved ones before the major impact event, but find the time to road trip across a crazy brains version of America in the meantime. It’s a fun premise that looks charming. You know except for everyone dying horribly.

Bend It Like Beckham

But that’s a baseball movie, you idiots…right?! Nope. It’s a  soccerphilia fest from the mind of Nick Hornby that came out way before Drew Barrymore lisped her way through—we’ll just come out and say it—a pretty sucky film of the same name. In this Fever Pitch, Colin Firth stars as a one of Hornby’s typical self-absorbed, specifically-obsessed-but-ultimately-changed-by-love male protagonists. His favorite soccer team is the driving force in his life…until he meets the love of his life, who happens to hate the game. Life lesson in this soccer flick? That if you love a team of men obsessively, you can love one woman just as much. And it’s a lot more fulfilling. How sweet.

She’s The Man

Eric Bishop worships two things: Manchester United and soccer legend Eric Cantona. But his life and relationships are in shambles, until one evening he smokes some weed and hallucinates a conversation with Cantona his hero. Suddenly, Canton starts appearing to him in other situations and becomes a sort of invisible life coach for Bishop. He turns his life around, yada yada yada. And the moral is…marijuana actually fixes lives not ruins them? No, no. Looking For Eric clearly isn’t endorsing that, but rather speaks to soccer fans by demonstrating how athletes can be really important and inspirin role models, even for adults. That is, when they’re not inspiring hooligan riots.

The cast and material both look great. Mortensen plays Freud and Michael Fassbender plays Carl Jung. Keira Knightley plays the sexed-up looney bird he plows and Vincent Cassel rocks a beard.

I dunno if it’s really the WORST possible time to find love. If the world’s about to end, no pressure to meet her parents. Anyway, no word yet on who these people are going to play — maybe half of them will be demons and the other half angels? Probably not, though. (Variety)

A word from Keira: “A newspaper here voted me one of the scruffiest people in Britain. I’m quite proud of that. It’s completely true.”

“Keira’s confirmed, Jude Law’s confirmed, Aaron Johnson’s confirmed, Kelly Macdonald’s confirmed, Benedict Cumberbatch is confirmed. I’m still waiting on Saoirse and James,” Wright told The Playlist.

Of course, Saoirse and James refers to Seahorse Rainman Saoirse Ronan and James McAvoy. The Wright alums are up for unspecified roles, but it has been revealed that Keira Knightley will play the title role, Jude Law will chill as her drip of a husband, and Aaron Johnson will play the young soldier who she allows to crawl on top of her while naked. When the book was first released, their affair was deemed very illicit by Russian society. So let’s assume things will get pretty kinky. We’re talking Dirty Sanchezes, Glass Bottom Boats, and the potentially-fatal “Cumberbatch.”

As news that mankind is doomed comes over his car radio, Carell’s character’s wife bolts from the car, never to return. Fortunately, Knightley comes along bearing a letter from Carell’s high-school sweetheart, who wants to spend the end of days with him. (If it’s the end of the world, I would probably elect to use a mediu faster than postage to get in touch with someone, but it’s quaint I guess, so I’ll let it slide.)

What are the odds that this movie actually ends with an asteroid smashing into the earth and killing Steve Carell and his high-school sweetheart? I’m getting pretty fired up about this film already. (Deadline)

The second trailer for Last Night introduces us again to Worthington and his wifey played by Keira Knightley as they are confronted by extra-marital temptation on the same night. Worthington, by Eva Mendes. Knightley, by some weird, sophisticated guy that only girls like Keira Knightley would be into. I hope they don’t cheat on one another and get a divorce. They’re offspring is our only hope for seeing a Pirates Of The Caribbean Part 27.

Oliver Stone wants Johnson to play one of the two leads in the drama Savages, about two pot growers whose sexy communal girlfriend (nice?) gets kidnapped by Mexican mobsters. The drug cartel wants the dudes to work for them, or the girl goes… up in smoke. “Muahaha.” Stone is directing, Shane Salerno (Armageddon) and novel author Don Winslow wrote the script, and they’re looking to shoot this June.

Meanwhile, Keira Knightley beckons Johnson, just like she does for me in my dreams. Johnson’s been offered the lead opposite Knightley in Anna Karenina, writer Tom Stoppard‘s adaptation of the Tolstoy classic novel I might have read in a literature class at some point. The film will be directed by Joe Wright (Atonement). One of the best modern writers adapting a novel considered to be one of the best of all time? Hmm… pass. (Deadline)

That’s right. Keira Knightley is cashing checks from the Syfy now. Though it won’t entail she roll around in cake with Deborah Gibson or go toe-to-toe with a Piranhceratops.

Knightley will loan her voice to Tinkerbell in the upcoming mini-series “Neverland.” Syfy’s live-action retelling of the classic story features other real non-Richard Grieco actors as well. Rhys Ifans, Anna Friel, Bob Hoskins, Charles Dance, Raoul Trujillo and Charlie Rowe have all signed on for roles.

The story follows Rowe’s Peter, and his group of pickpocket friends. Rhys Ifans plays their mentor Jimmy Hook, who has them snatch a magical orb that sends them to Neverland. There they encounter magical tree spirits and pirates who are on the hunt for the secret to eternal youth.

I’m surprised to hear that there are none of Syfy’s horrific, hybrid monsters appearing in the series. J.M. Barrie’s original featured an alligator. It must be killing the execs at Syfy not to splice it with a snapping turtle or wild boar. At the very least, they could make it humongous. (Deadline)

Wright’s hoping to get Anna Karenina up and running with go-to Oscar baiter, Tom Stoppard, whittling down the narrative. “You can [make a 2 hour movie] if you’ve got Tom Stoppard writing. He’s done an amazing script which involves Levin’s story as well as Anna’s story. Yeah, Tom Stoppard is just..also, he’s so immersed in Russian history and culture and identity or lack of it.”

He doesn’t come out right out and say it but he implies that Keira Knightley is his top choice to star. “Not sure yet. It’s fairly obvious, but I can’t quite say. She hasn’t signed on the line yet. I’m loyal to my actors.”

I appreciate any director who doesn’t string us along with endless casting shortlists. However, should Knightley not sign on, I’m fully prepared to Photoshop a picture of Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, and Mia Wasikowska all leg-wrestling for the role. Actually I may just go ahead and do that anyway for my own usage. (via The Playlist)

It looks pretty good, even Worthington, who I’m used to seeing looking stoic while jumping around in front of video game characters. Cool that he’s doing some actual acting for a change. (via The Playlist)

Further, the talk on Paul Giamatti playing the billionaire’s stalker has died down as well, which ominously suggests that they might be turning Cosmopolis into The Game for a younger set. Ugh. Here’s to hoping they at least pull a down-on-his-luck William H. Macy or Phillip Seymour Hoffman in there to add some depth. That’s not to say Knightley isn’t a decent actress, but she’s so hot that it’s hard to pay attention to her role. Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s never had that problem.

Cosmopolis follows a billionaire (Pattinson) ove 24 hours as he cheats on his wife, gets stalked, and loses his fortune. Sounds like a pretty good premise. Here’s to hoping that they can get the right team together. (Playlist)

Okay, got that out of my system.  Anyway, there are also lesser-knowns in the mix too, like Charlotte Riley, Kate Mara and Gemma Arterton. If all this casting craziness has got you freaked out worse than one of Scarecrow’s victims, there is one constant you can count on: Christian Bale will return as The Batman. Oh, and of course… WIIIIIIINK! Okay. Here it is. The trailer for William Monahan‘s first go behind the camera, London Boulevard. Colin Farrell stars as a gangster who falls in love with with a starlet played by Keira Knightley. What a perfect match. Who better for a media target to get involved with than a guy who can kick the sh*t out of TMZ. Make an example by breaking a few of their necks, and they’ll let you walk through LAX unencumbered.

Of course, it’s not all sunshine, lollipops, and neck-snaps. The sucky part of being a gangster means you need to kill all of your co-workers before you can shift careers, otherwise they’ll try to interfere with your future happiness like a bunch of dicks. That’s what Ray Winstone is up to when he shows up dressed like Royal Tenenbaum. Does two weeks notice mean nothing overseas?

**Sort Of Spoiler Alert**

Mark Romanek’s cloning drama turned out to be secret screening #2 at Fantastic Fest. Never Let Me Go is about a school for kids who find out they’re being bred solely to donate organs, and they’ll probably die after three or four donations. There was an action movie version of this a few years ago, but it wasn’t very good and didn’t do very well so Romanek’s version may as well be original.

The first section, when the characters are kids, is a really sweet exploration of youthful discovery. It’s a little more sheltered and innocent than usual coming of age dramas, but it fits with that genre until the teacher explains the plot to them. When they grow into teenagers, they’re still innocent like kids.

Kathy (Carey Mulligan) loves Tommy (Andrew Garfield) but he gets more romantically close with Ruth (Keira Knightley). That is, if they knew what romance was, that’s how they’d be paired off but even that is awkward for these sheltered specimens. For all their education, they still can’t make sense of their feelings or physical touches. Eventually, the trio gets out into the world and they can barely order food at a diner.

The performances are good. They go from innocent to tragic at different points in the story. It’s a really mellow drama about how people live life with limited experiences and information. Once they are adults, the three characters only represent slightly different levels of maturity, but none of them are whole grown-ups.

It’s good sci-fi, just dealing with the concept of people bred for harvesting on a personal level. It’s not that exciting or eventful. They just have to live with this knowledge and either get the most out of life, or resign themselves to being a medical specimen. There’s not much to say because the characters are purposefully stunted, they have so little invested in life.

The language of the film is stark. They talk about “completing” as when they’re finished donating, which means they’ll die. Words like “donor” and “original” take on new philosophical meanings.

The film looks rather dreary, not necessarily because of the subject matter. Just every place from the children’s academy to the overcast city to medical facilities look very gray. Maybe it’s supposed to represent the lives Kathy, Tommy and Ruth lead or maybe it’s just England.

I appreciate Never Let Me Go. I don’t know if I like it. It does things right as a character study and maintains the ambiguity that the Michael Bay version needed. Other than the exercise of doing it right though, it’s not necessarily entertaining.

MTV has dropped the first clip from Mark Romanek‘s upcoming Never Let Me Go. The film stars Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, and Andrew Garfield as young adults at a boarding school that is doing more than instilling proper etiquette. To give away anymore would be giving away too much. But if you watch the trailer you can probably figure out what’s in store for the kids.

In the clip, Keira Knightley, in so many words, tells Carey Mulligan to stay away from her man (Andrew Garfield). She found Carey’s porn and laughed at it with Andrew, which is totally not cool. But then she kisses her, so that makes it cool again.

Never Let Me Go hits theaters September 15, 2010.

The trailer has been released for Mark Romanek‘s adaptation of the novel Never Let Me Go. The screenplay for the dramatic thriller was written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine), and is about "a group of children who spent their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school, who as they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them." 

But what’s the haunting reality?! I don’t want to ruin it for all the cry babies, but if you pay close attention to the trailer you’ll probably be able to figure it out. Mark Romanek last directed One Hour Photo, the movie that ruined my romantic relationship with my CVS photo developer, so except some trippy moments between Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield. It would be great if the twist involved Robin Williams somehow. I don’t CARE if it’s taking liberties with the source material! Go back to Woodstock, hippie!
