The Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil star has signed on to Lionsgate‘s Nurse 3D. She’ll star alongside Boardwalk Empire‘s Paz De La Huerta in the horror film where attractive nurses who seduce men and then murder them for cheating on their wives. That must take a psychotic level of commitment. All of the nurses I know (from watching ER) work like nineteen-hour shifts. Then they have to find the energy to look hot, have sex, and murder men before disposing of the evidence? When do these chicks catch any shuteye? (Deadline)

Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine) are innocent woodsmen fixing up their cabin in the woods. A carload of college kids mistakes them for creepy killers, and through a series of misunderstandings, end up killing themselves while incriminating Tucker and Dale along the way.

That hook is brilliant: two innocent doofuses (doofi?) trying to help and inadvertently causing gory deaths in the gory horror tradition. Indeed, Tucker’s chainsaw incident is a work of art, making it look like a slasher chase thanks to Tudyk’s totally sincere performance.

Unfortunately, many of the subsequent accidents are familiar from other movies. Even some of the obvious ones are still joyfully excessive, although one blatantly totally foreshadowed early in the film. The gunshot death is especially cliché. The Coen Bros., Soderbergh and I’m sure Tarantino did that one at some point too.

The college kids do all the clichés from the horror movies with cell phone signals, splitting up and saying, “Don’t go in there.” That’s funny, and they’re all pretty much A-holes anyway. Chad (Jesse Moss) is the D-bag leader but they’re all pretty easy to hate. I thought screaming Chloe (Chelan Simmons) was adorable, in the gore fodder way she’s supposed to be.

Director Eli Craig shoots the film well. It looks like a professional movie except that Hollywood would never allow this kind of gore. He throws us some nighttime skinny dipping nakedness, although Allison (Katrina Bowden) only gets down to her undies of course.

Once Chad confronts Tucker and Dale, Allison has to keep her dialogue especially vague to maintain the misunderstanding. She tries to tell him that Tucker and Dale are her friends, but she never quite says, “They didn’t kidnap me. I almost drowned and they pulled me up to safety.” That would undo the whole story.

The film is mainly entertaining because Tudyk and Labine are so damn likeable, and Bowden plays a total sweetheart too. As festival movies go, it’s no Hobo with a Shotgun Rubber or Detention, but it’s in the same family.

I was not expecting to like the original Piranha 3D. I’m no horror buff, but between the over-the-top absurd violence, the naked underwater prancing and Christopher Lloyd basically dusting off Doc Brown, I was sold. Now they’re making Piranha 3DD and I’m anxious to see a trailer. Until then, I’ll just have to make do with these unauthorized set photos from Let’s Get Out of Here Blog. Turns out the writer lives near where the film is shooting in Wilmington, NC. Here you get a first look at the water park set, plus a bloody prop girl. I can tell a lot of happy summertime memories are gonna be made for the families that go to Big Wet. The film chomps into theaters November 23, 2011.

Directed by John Gulager, Piranha 3DD stars Ving Rhames, Gary Busey, Katrina Bowden, Paul Scheer and The Hoff, plus Christopher Lloyd returns. (Dread Central)

I fear for Bowden in this role. How is she going to play an L.A. party girl while Tara Reid is standing in the same room? That’s a lot of pressure to get it right. It’s like imitating De Niro to his face. (Variety)

The Hoff joins Ving Rhames Paul Scheer, Katrina Bowden, David Koechner, and Christopher Lloyd. Kind of a sausagefest. Poor Katrina won’t stand a chance, especially if Ving Rhames is channeling his character “Diamond Dog” from Con Air.

Knight Rider could use this career boost after his reality show on A&E got pulled after just two episodes. People clearly didn’t want to see him living his day-to-day life, but maybe they’ll be interested in seeing him eaten alive by tiny fish with sharp teeth. I think they just might be. (THR)
