CBS has lowered the boom with their fall schedule today. They’ve shared with us a sitcom in the vein of “How I Met Your Mother” and”The Big Bang Theory,” a J.J. Abrams sci-fi/pre-crime joint, and three more shows that appear to be aimed at whatever demographic your grandparents’ grandparents are in.

Person of Interest” is the aforementioned J.J. Abrams show that follows around Michael Emerson (“Lost”‘s Ben Linus) as he stops crime…(wait for it)…BEFORE it happens. But don’t ask the producers how it’s different than Minority Report. They are very touchy about being accused of stealing ideas from the shows that they stole ideas from.

“A Gifted Man” follows around a brilliant man who develops a new appreciation for life after his dead wife teaches him lessons from beyond the grave. Also, the wife wants closure for something, so let’s join this couple as they search for an appreciation for life and for closure. *Fart*

How to be a Gentleman” focuses on a proper man (David Hornsby) who wishes to become more manly, enlisting the help of Kevin Dillon’s character along the way. If there’s anything CBS has taught us from “Rules of Engagement,” “Two and a Half Men,” and “The Big Bang Theory,” it’s that they know how to draw rich, dynamic portraits of men. It wouldn’t be presumptuous to begin getting EXTREMELY excited about this show RIGHT NOW.

2 Broke Girls” stars Kat Dennings as 50% of the title. She and an unlikely friend work as waitresses to raise money to start a business. I’m willing to bet that they also learn that it’s hard being on your own in the city and stuff. Hold everything: I just learned that one of the waitresses is a trust-fund baby. What a disarming juxtaposition!

“Unforgettable” stars something called a “Poppy Montgomery.” That name would lead me to believe that it would be a silent film, but the below clip demonstrates that there’s sound and color and everything. It’s about a sexy cop that has a near-flawless memory. However, the one thing she can’t remember is the very thing she wants to the most: the details surrounding her sister’s murder. That’s very unfortunate for Poppy Montgomery.

A frequent face in teen comedies, Kat Dennings is taking a stab at the superhero genre with her role in Thor. The 24-year-old actress, best known for her work in The 40 Year Old Virgin and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, will play opposite Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth in the adaptation of the popular Marvel comic.

A word from Kat: “I don’t take crap from anyone, so that makes people think I’m rebellious. I’m not. I’m just not a pushover.”

Thor‘ target=’_blank’>Thor-2′ target=’_blank’>Thor was never a comic book I read. I’m not particularly interested in Norse gods or warriors from another planet who come to earth. Thor is Thor movie and it doesn’t do anything to sell me on the mythology.

The film’s only good action sequence is the battle against the Frost Giants on their planet. Thor gets some good hammer whacks in and each of the Warriors Three (Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas and Tadanobu Asano) and Sif (Jaimie Alexander) get to display various weapons and powers. You might as well do the whole movie on Asgard, but of course then Thor couldn’t joi The Avengers. The rest of the action is just beefy man fights.

The film even struggles to make Earth matter. All Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is doing on Earth is trying to get his hammer back. He goes out drinking with a scientist (Stellan Skarsgard) in a pointless scene, but what does Asgard do for us? Eventually Loki (Tom Hiddleston) unleashes the Destroyer so Thor has to defend us. That’s it? Asgard sends baddies to Earth and Thor fights them?

Natalie Portman Is All Over Thor In New Trailer

I get the arc Thor goes through but it’s still contrived. Oh, the hero learns a lesson. Loki tricks Thor, but he’s no Iago. He just says something that isn’t true. It’s not like he’s incepting Thor. Even though I’ve never read a Thor comic, I knew exactly what would happen when he tried to get his hammer back, and what would happen the second time.

The Asgard parts are like a modern day Clash of the Titans, gods standing around talking about battle but with better production value. They actually get through a lot of plot really quickly in the first act, but that only means they’re making room for more on Earth.

Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) discovers Thor during her physics research. She gets to be a love interest and explain the science of interplanetary travel, via her layman assistant Darcy (Kat Dennings). Coulson (Clark Gregg) is like a stealthy MIB type in this one, so I guess his character changes per movie. SHIELD investigates Thor’s hammer and blah blah blah. The Tony Stark reference is nice though.

They derive some good comedy when earthlings react to Thor-talk. The fish out of water joke gets old when he’s walking through traffic intersections. When Sif and the Warriors show up again they just get downright goofy. And I’m sorry, armor on earth looks silly.

At least Kenneth Branagh knows how to shoot destruction. The film looks good, and steady with no shaky cam. Even when he tilts the camera for establishing shots, the framing is still right. The 3D makes the backgrounds look like flat backdrops even though they’re probably actual graphic designs, but the perspective work is good. They make the frost giants tower over Odin (Anthony Hopkins).

The visual effects look like live-action people shooting through space, ice beasts and weather swirls. So, just like every other CGI movie. Honestly, why spend years on complex computer shots just so we can see the same effect? There is a tag after the credits though so stick around for your Easter egg.

Will Addison Timlin Flash ‘Odd Thomas’ Her Boobs? http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/odd-thomas-sees-crazy-visions-of-addison-timlin/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/odd-thomas-sees-crazy-visions-of-addison-timlin/#comments Wed, 06 Apr 2011 03:54:00 +0000 Geoffrey Golden http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=205570 "Californication" star Addison may play opposite Anton Yelchin in the Dean Koontz adaptation 'Odd Thomas'. Hopefully, she will play the character topless.

So Odd Thomas struck out with Lily Collins (The Blind Side). Collins was the frontrunner to play Stormy Llewellyn in the Dean Koontz adaptation, but decided she wanted to play one of the 200 Snow Whites in one of the 200 Snow White movies coming out – specifically, Th Brothers Grimm: Snow White for Relativity Media.

Who will date the dead people-seeing, short-order cook played by Anton Yelchin now? Rumors say it’ll be Addison Timlin from “Californication,” who would beat out the likes of Emma RobertsPortia Doubleday, and Kat Dennings. See, flashing your boobs on Showtime can only lead to great things.

Stephen Sommers is directing his own script. (Variety)

Dean Koontz fans, are you ready to get excited? Or rather, are you ready to casually acknowledge that another major role in the film adaptation of Odd Thomas has almost been filled? Nod your head nonchalantly and we’ll begin.

The role of Stormy Llewellyn, which sounds like a dragon porn star‘s name, has been offered to Lily Collins (The Blind Side). She beat out a bunch of other young ladies, like Emma Roberts, Portia Doubleday, and Kat Dennings, for the opportunity to play Anton Yelchin‘s girlfriend. That’s something worth Yelchin about. We’ll see if she accepts the part.

Directed by Stephen Sommers, the plot concerns California desert townie Thomas, “a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities who encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces.” Sounds like Odd lives up to his name. Production will start May 2, provided ghosts don’t screw up the filming. As long as they stay in their special trailer, like they’re supposed to, everything will be fine. (Variety)

Having completed Thor, and gotten picked up as a lead in CBS’ “Two Broke Girls,” Kat Dennings is sneaking in some time on the set of the inspirational To Write Love on Her Arms.

The film is based on the story of Renee Yohe, a former cutter who launched a movement to bring the self-destructive behavior to the public’s attention and offer support for those afflicted. Dennings will play Yohe in the film, directed by Nathan Frankowski, whose last work was the Ben Stein-approved Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. The film will also star “One Tree Hill“‘s Chad Michael Murray. So there’s that…

Principal photography starts this week, with a wrap in late March, so her TV shooting schedule shouldn’t be encumbered by the film. It’s nice to see she’ll be doin the American public a service after attacking its collective taste with Thor. (Cinema Blend)

The two actors have joined Lives of the Saints, along with Meg Ryan, Kat Dennings, and Joe Anderson. The film "tells the intertwining stories of a group of Angelenos seeking redemption for past mistakes, only to find that forgiveness comes from unlikely places." They were originally considering the title Crash 2 but quickly realized it would be better to trick the audience into thinking this was a totally different concept. My fingers are crossed for a more Cliffhanger Lithgow than a Harry and the Hendersons Lithgow. He won't stand a chance against Fity without his infamous furrowing of the brow. That move stops hearts beating. (Variety)
