He's far too busy for all of these sequels.

As was the case with the fifth film in the Highlander series, Justin Lin will be far too busy making the fifth film in The Fast And The Furious franchise to make the fourth sequel to The Terminator. But that’s not to say that he isn’t interested in eventually making another Terminator sequel should the world decide that it needs one.

The current plan by rights holder/awesome billionaire Megan Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger is to impregnate their housekeeper. Oops. Can cross that one off the list? The current plan is actually to put the first of two Terminator films into production in the fourth quarter of 2012. Which is exactly when Justin Lin will be making Vin Diesel and Paul Walker steal cargo from the underbelly of a speeding jet. However, Lin has been very involved with conceptualizing the upcoming Terminator film and wants to be involved should schedules work out or if another entry does come to fruition. However, Ellison finds herself in a race against time as her own Judgement Day will occur in 2018 when the film rights revert back to James Cameron. It’s of utmost importance that one or two slapped-together rush-job sequels are in theaters before that time. (Deadline)

He was heads above the rest.

It seems that there can be more than one. The runaway success of Fast Five gave director Justin Lin‘s career a boost, giving him schedule conflicts out the wazoo which forced him to sever ties with Summit‘s reboot of Highlander. A successor has been chosen.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director of Intruders and 28 Weeks Later and The Crow rebooter, will direct from a script by Twilight‘s Melissa Rosenberg. The official press release describes the plot as such, “In Highlander, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman must confront the last of his kind, a murderously brutal barbarian, who lusts for the Prize.”

Okay. That sounds like Highlander. But what are they going to change unnecessarily? It’s a reboot, right? It needs to include some plot change that will disappoint fans of the original. Given the Twilight connection, we’ll just have to assume mumbling. (Deadline)

Summit is searching for a new director to poop on my childhood.

Justin Lin won’t be rocking out to Queen and chopping any heads off after all. Back in September of 2009, he was attached to Summit‘s reboot of Highlander, but Fast Five became a runaway success since then and Lin now finds his cup running over. Directing duties on the sixth Fast and the Furious and a Terminator sequel will keep him tied up and away from Highlander, though he will remain involved as an executive producer.

Summit is eager to get the reboot up and running as a potential replacement for the soon-to-end Twilight series. Does this mean will see a more romanticized Highlander? Perhaps instead of decapitation, perhaps an Immortal can only be killed by the severing of their ab muscles. I really hope I’m wrong.

Production Assistants do grunt work on set, from fetching coffee to moving furniture in the production offices to moving furniture that will eventually become home to a coffee maker. Glamorous work, indeed. However, PAs sometimes rise up the ranks, and people eventually move and fetch things for them. Looks like Bobby Glickert is there.

5 photosHumans And Robots Can’t Coexist In New ‘Transformers 3′ Pics

Glickert, a PA on Transformers and Iron Man, and director Justin Lin‘s former assistant, sold a science fiction movie pitch to Universal. From robot fluffer to sci-fi super-player. He’s attached to direct and produce the film, with Lin and Scott Stuber set to co-produce. Universal is looking for a writer to pen the screenplay. Though plot details are being kept under-wraps, the word is that it’s similar in tone to Heat and the Bourne movies. Here’s what Lin has to say:

“Taking a step back, as a viewer, the tone and the gritty approach to the sci-fi genr taken here is something that hasn’t been seen in a while.”

Uh, hasn’t he seen WALL-E? That shit’s gritty as f*ck. (Hollywood Reporter)

Does it even count as 'narrowing down' if there are still 8 names left?

Ever since Darren Aronofsky ditched The Wolverine, it’s only been a question of who will step up to take his place. And now, in a truly newsworthy development, we know exactly who it will be – one of these eight guys: Jose Padilha, Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go), Justin Lin (Fast Five), Gavin O’Connor, James Mangold (Knight and Day) and Gary Shore.

It’s possible that all these names aren’t familiar to you. For one, Gary Shore is mostly a commercial director. The rest are directors of a blend of relatively anonymous action movies like Knight and Day, and art films like Never Let Me Go. It remains to be seen which direction FOX will go in – but no matter which way they go, it’ll probably be better than the first Wolverine movie. (Variety)

Megan Ellison won the war!

UPDATE: Megan Ellison won the war! Go, Megan Ellison!

Seems like The Terminator is always battling for the future. Now it’s time for Terminator to take a breather and let other folks battle over his future for a change. You earned it, big guy.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has come back to the Terminator franchise — [Insert "I'll Be Back" Joke] — and Fast Five direct Justin Lin is also attached. Interest is clearly heating up like a vat of molten steel, because Lionsgate has competition for buying the rights from hedge fund Pacificor: Megan Ellison. You may remember hearing about Ellison on this very website, because the wealthy heiress is financing tons of interesting projects, like Kathryn Bigelow‘s Osama Bin Laden movie and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, along with last year’s True Grit. Lionsgate bid $29.5 million, but Ellison’s Annapurna Films bid higher. *Tension*

Who will control the new Schwarzenegger Terminator? Still waiting to see if Skynet throws in a bid. (Movieline)

Vin Diesel, believe it or not, has never been nominated for an Academy Award for acting. Nor have any of the movies in the Fast and Furious series been nominated for any major Oscars. But that might be about to change, thanks to the latest entry in the series, Fast Five, according to Fast Five star and eminent Oscar prognosticator Vin Diesel:

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some Oscar talk around this. I don’t know, maybe I’m just biting off what some guy from Channel 7 thought. But sooner or later, people are gonna say, ‘Wait a minute, just because they are for the working class doesn’t mean they’re not great.’”

New ‘Fast Five’ Trailer Knees Gravity In The Taint From Behind

Here’s a thought that just occurred to me: With his gleaming bald head, Vin Diesel kind of looks like an Oscar statuette. That’s it, that’s all I got. Good luck in your quest for a Best Picture Oscar for Fast Five, Vin Diesel. Let’s face it, Fast Five is almost certainly better than Shakespeare In Love. Tyrese, Ludacris, and the fantastically gorgeous Elsa Pataky also talk about the relationships on set. The intensity of the footage has nothing on my intro though. I could have sworn I was more enthusiastic during the taping. Perhaps I was just terrified of falling over the railing and tumbling all the way down Sugar Loaf.

When he said "I'll be back," he meant "like seven or eight more times."

Arnold Schwarzenegger looks primed to return as The Terminator, with Fast Five’s Justin Lin attached to direct, the as-of-yet-scriptless project. CAA is shopping a package around that includes the rights to the franchise with both Arnie and Lin’s attachment. Universal, Sony, and Lionsgate are all interested, but finding a buyer shouldn’t take long given the heat of both Lin, with Fast Five coming out this weekend, and Schwarzenegger, who has enjoyed something of a career renaissance since his return to private life.

Although no details are available on the premise (since there’s no screenplay), nor a timeline here, it’s safe to say that this would probably take priority over any other projects, as whatever studio pays the $30mm or so to get this project will probably want to see a return on that investment sooner rather than later.

Don’t be surprised if this film takes place so far in the future that technology is such that cyborgs not only age, but get fat. But the technology still isn’t there to change an Austrian accent.
Justin Lin needs time to make a decision, OK?

News about a new Terminator movie has been going around for a while now, often with Fast Five director Justin Lin attached. And Lin seems up for it, according to a recent interview. Here’s the relevant paragraph, which I will then attempt to make sense of:

“I think one of the great things is that when I got started, no one would return my calls, and now I get a lot of phone calls, which is good. I have options. Terminator was one of my favorite films growing up. And I feel I have a take that I would love to see, and I’ve talked with Arnold and we’ve talked and we’ll see. Again, I would love to do it, but it has to be the right circumstances. It has to be the right people. And there’s other projects too. But I’m in a position now that I can choose more than I could a year ago, two years ago. So that is something that is potentially in my future, but when I get home I will sit down and look at my options and choose what I want to do.”

So basically, he might do it, but then again he might not. That’s just the kind of fickleness that a Terminator wouldn’t understand. You program a Terminator to do something, and he does it! None of this “only if it’s the right people” crap. Come on, Justin Lin. Is this what all that partying in Rio has done to you? (Collider)

Sometimes this job is really tough.

Universal Pictures invited me out to Rio de Janeiro this week to hang with the cast and crew of Fast Five. After giving it some serious thought, I replied, “HELL YES!” All of your favorite drivers will be there, including Vin Diesel Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, and Jordana Brewster (you know, for the fellas). There will also be sun, sand, and unbelievably hot Brazilian women strolling the beach wearing bathing suits of limited fabric. I hope my pasty white movie blogger skin doesn’t frighten them away.

If you have questions for any of the stars of the film, or director Justin Lin, please leave them in the comment section. I’ll be interviewing Tyrese, Ludacris, Matt Schulze, Gal Gadot, Elsa Pataky, and Sung Kang as well. Since this film is packed to the brim with masculinity, maybe you have some “man” questions you’d like to get answered. Like, how does a real man get his steak cooked, or what’s the best scotch to drink while contemplating your awesomeness?

You’ll also be able to watch a streaming live broadcast of the world premiere of the film on Friday night. More info on that coming later. But for now, I gotta catch a flight to Brazil, and brush up on my Portuguese. Tchau.

That’s “bye,” right?

Since "The Great Arnold Schwarzenegger Tweet of 2011," offers have been coming in for the former Kindergarden Cop.

First a Terminator, then a Governator, now a Terminator once again?

Since “The Great Arnold Schwarzenegger Tweet of 2011,” offers have been coming in for the former Kindergarden Cop. Apparently the hottest offer being discussed is for Universal to team him up with director Justin Lin (three Fast and Furious movies) and writer Chris Morgan (also three Fast and Furious movies) for another Terminator movie. So, yes, Arnold wouldn’t just “be back,” he’d “be back” in the role where he says he’ll “be back.” Can’t get more “back” than that.

The franchise, once hotter than molten steel, has cooled off considerably in recent years. It would take some serious time traveling to change the weak box office numbers from Terminator: Salvation, and legal troubles + bankruptcy issues with the property’s former owner have left many doubting whether Terminator has a future. However, with Schwarzenegger now in the picture once again, we might not have to say “hasta la vista” after all. (Deadline)
