Remember how angry Paul Giamatti got about Merlot in 'Sideways'? Now it's time for a new celebrity to freak out in a new Alexander Payne movie: Mr. George Clooney.

Remember how angr Paul Giamatti got about Merlot in Sideways? Now it’s time for a new celebrity to freak out in a new Alexander Payne movie. Normally not-running George Clooney: time to run as fast and as awkwardly as you can.

The above link is a teaser clip from The Descendants, directed by Payne, based on a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The film is about an indifferent Hawaiian lawyer and father whose wife gets into a bad boating accident, causing him to take a hard look at his life. It also causes him to randomly run into people’s houses and ask short questions like, “who is he,” “what’s going on here,” and “wait a second… who am I?” Okay, that last part I’m just inferring from the clip. Ya got me.

The Descendents flip-flops into theaters December 16th and also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lilliard and Beau Bridges.

I would like to volunteer coach for the league that has CZT, Jessica Biel, and Uma Thurman as soccer moms.

It looks like director Gabriel Muccino (Seven Pounds, Pursuit of Happyness) is branching out with a project that won’t make everyone want to cry. It’s crazy enough to work.

Despite the unfortunately punny title, Playing the Field has some things going for it, not least of which is the cast, which added the likes of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Judy Greer to existing players Gerard Butler, Dennis Quaid, Jessica Biel, and Uma Thurman. Damn! There’s some good-lookin’ folk in this soccer dramedy.

The movie centers on Butler, who plays a troubled former soccer player who attempts to redeem himself by coaching his son’s soccer team, which seems to be ground zero for hot soccer moms, including Biel, Thurman, and Greer. Needless to say, his dalliances get create some tenions on his path to redemption. Quaid plays another handsome soccer coach, meaning that these kids’ games probably turn into hot orgies of the wealthy by halftime.

That said, the script is currently undergoing revisions by Stuart Bloomberg, who has shown a deft hand with Keeping the Faith and The Kids Are All Right. So it might not just be about good-looking older people banging. But if it is, that’s okay too.
A whole mess of comedians portray a dysfunctional family together to celebrate their dad's 70th birthday.

This movie is so serious about its comedy that the producers got Lewis Black to do the narration for the trailer. Hip to the fact that they should probably get some funny actors as well, they set forth and returned with Rainn Wilson, Michael C. Hall (who actually is funny), Sarah Silverman, Judy Greer, Ben Schwartz, and a whole mess of others to portray a dysfunctional family together to celebrate their dad’s 70th birthday.

Up to this point, it sounds a bit like Arrested Development, which it totally fine, but the family starts to resent their younger brother who has aired the family’s dirty laundry, albeit in a fictional fashion. In short, it’s a movie about a family bickering. Which has been done to death, but not with this caliber of comedians. Would I want this cast in a movie about the atrocities of WWII? Probably not. Will I take them as bickering drunkards? Every day of the week. (Yahoo Movies!)

We can finally see that this film has some edge to it, and a ton of synonyms for the word “penis.” Gyllenhaal plays a charming Viagra salesman who engages in a casual relationship with Hathaway after seeing her boobs under false pretenses. But love gets in the way, as it always does. Damn feelings. We praise evolution for giving Man a conscience, but it’s the main reason we can’t screw like monkeys. Well most of us who have to get up in the morning for work, anyway.

Deeeeeeeerp!

Jack Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway star in Love & Other Drugs, a romantic comedy that isn’t afraid to rom-com it up in every aspect possible. Gyllenhaal plays a charming Viagra salesman who tricks a free-spirited Hathaway into taking her shirt off. After she beats him with a suitcase, they go get a cup of coffee, and the rest is history.

The cheeseball lines, the music, the sappy on-screen text, the emotionally distant male protagonist whose resolve is broken by the emotionally distant female protagonist — it’s got it all. Why couldn’t their casual arrangement of sex with no strings attached just have remained casual?! Because love got in the way, Silly. Ed Zwick, who has been taking on period pieces such as The Last Samurai and Defiance as of late, directed the film, which I suppose could still be considered a period piece, meaning you have to be able to have one in order to think it looks good.

Love & Other Drugs hits theaters November 24th.
