While Joss Whedon has been busy filming gods hitting robots with hammers, Brin Hill has taken directing duties on his supernatural love story In Your Eyes. The story focuses on two strangers who live inside each others brains. Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David play the mentally-linked opposites whose psychic connection blossoms into love even though it would be so weird to act physically on the attraction. Ewwwww.

Paul Bettany has had a pretty sweet ride as the voice of AI system Jarvis in the Marvel films: show up in sweatpants, ask for a latte, say some science-y stuff, go home. Now there’s word that he’ll have to put in more than an hour of work as his role in Avengers: Age of Ultron has been upgraded. He’ll now have to act with his face as Joss Whedon has cast him as the Vision, an android who, in the comics, was created by the film’s central villainous android Ultron.

It’s unclear now if Vision will be a creation of Ultron or the result of a lazy Tony Stark’s attempt to make a really super weird looking robot butler. (Deadline)

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has turned off a lot of viewers by not being at the level of awesome we’ve come to expect from Marvel’s films. The major criticism is that the show hasn’t featured any recognizable superheroes (though in all fairness, they were pretty upfront about the show following S.H.I.E.L.D. agents). The producers maintain that there has been a plan at work and now there’s word at what that plan is. Deathlok is headed to the series.

Throughout the first season, we’ve been introduced to Mike Peterson, an ordinary factory worker turned super-soldier turned hero who is now going to be turned into the cyborg Deathlok. It’s a smart move that will hopefully bring back early deserters. Everyone has complained for four years about The Walking Dead, yet they’re still lured back season to season. The important lesson that ABC has learned here, is that patience is not a virtue held by nerds. Frankly, I like the series and hope that this caving to popular demand doesn’t hurt it in the long run. If it’s allowed a long run.

You can have two or three superheroes tops fighting an android. And since The Avengers is an entire team, it only makes sense that the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron is adding more bad guys for the heroes to throw things at. Dracula’s Thomas Kretschmann has signed on to play a secondary villain to James Spader‘s Ultron. Mostly because Avengers: Age of Nazis seemed more difficult to market outside of Europe.

He’ll play the evil Nazi, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, who leads Hydra whenever the Red Skull is busy being sucked off into alternate dimensions. In the film, von Strucker is set up as a foil to Captain America who just really hates the sh*t out of Nazis. Meanwhile, let’s assume that Iron Man and the Hulk will have their hands full fighting the robot while Hawkeye shoots arrows at the Hydra henchmen. It’s unconfirmed if there are roles for more villains in the film. If so, the guy from Grimm will surely be insulted if Marvel doesn’t call. (The Wrap)

In casting news more shocking than Ben Affleck as Batman, comes word today that Joss Whedon has dusted off James Spader and cast him as Ultron, the central villian in The Avengers 2. Which is an action-adventure film. That will make billions of dollars. And will now be out Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fighting James Spader.

In the comics, Ultron the Robot was created by Ant-Man (aka Hank Pym) and becomes a sentient, super-powered being hellbent on the destruction of The Avengers. However for the film iteration, it’s expected that he will be created by Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. If Whedon hasn’t finalized the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver casting, might I suggest Jami Gertz and Andrew McCarthy? Makes this sucker a full-on Less Than Zero reunion.

Of course, these are just jokes. This isn’t Spader’s first foray into the Marvel Universe. I think we all remember:

Avengers 2 should really be old hat for him. (The Wrap)

Okay, so this one is kinda curvy so pay attention. Joss Whedon announced at Comic-Con that his Avengers sequel will be titled Age of Ultron, which is also the name of a recent Marvel Comics series. But, the movie only shares similarity with the comic in title only. Ultron, itself, is the name of an evil, indestructible robot created by Ant-Man that hates the living shit out of the Avengers. Ant-Man will not appear in the film, rather he will be introduced in his own solo film so Ultron will have a different daddy this time. Whedon has commented, “We’re doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron … We’re crafting our own version of it where his own origin comes more directly from the Avengers we already know about.”

Which likely points to Tony Stark creating the robot with the intentions of it taking on his Iron Manning duties, have it go amok, and then deciding he’d better just continue to Iron Man because Don Cheadle can only do so much. Also, I have a feeling that Vin Diesel will play Giant Man. (MTV)

Entertainment Weekly confirmed speculation based off a Joss Whedon tease from last week. Their Iron Man 3 cover story backs up a tip from an unnamed source with a quote from Marvel chief Kevin Feige.

A source confirms to EW that the twin characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be joining The Avengers 2, which Whedon hinted at recently when he said he was writing a brother-sister duo into the movie. Feige maintains a poker face on that scoop, saying only: “I’m not confirming or denying. The draft could change six months from now.”

The draft could change, of course, but it’s an intriguing update. What exactly does Whedon have in store for The Avengers 2? We’re going to have to sit through four or five post-credit sequences to find out.

Joss Whedon released this video explaining why he has turned his back on the president in favor of Gov. Romney. He’s really the only candidate whose cold attitude and shortsighted policies can usher in the zombie apocalypse. As Whedon points out, “[Mitt's] not afraid to face a ravening, grasping horde of subhumans because that’s how he sees poor people already.” That’s really the type of leader we need when Hell is full and the dead walk the Earth.

In news that will elate Marvel fans not accepting of the cold finality of death, Agent Coulson lives! To what degree, we don’t know!!

The man himself, Clark Gregg, appeared this weekend at NY Comic-Con’s Marvel panel. Joss Whedon (who couldn’t be there to nerd out in person) phoned in and revealed that Gregg would reprise the secret agent man role in ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. That is if ABC decides to pick the series up.

What is unknown is the exact timeline of the series. Will it take place after the events of The Avengers and reveal Nick Fury to be a big, mean liar? Or will the events featuring Coulson take place in the past? My recommendation is that he die in every episode only to mysteriously resurrect in the next. That would up the drama. (Screen Crush)

Scarlett Johannson was a nice surprise in this past summer’s The Avengers. After hardly registering as Black Widow in Iron Man 2, the character was given proper justice with a meatier role in Marvel’s most recent tentpole. However, it’s a role that almost wasn’t.

In fact, Emily Blunt was initially cast as Black Widow back in 2010 but she was forced to drop out in favor of looking like a stupid dick in the disastrous flop Gulliver’s Travels. If the Daily Mail is to be believed, Blunt may still have her chance to join the Marvel universe. According to the tabloid, both Blunt and Luther star Ruth Wilson are up for the role of Ms. Marvel in Avengers 2: Shawarma Nights.

Between Johansson striking it rich with her sloppy-seconds and Chris Evans nabbing Captain America over Blunt’s husband, John Krasinski, it’s going to be a weird set. If this casting happens, I demand a fight between Black Widow and Ms. Marvel. It’s the only way to relieve the awkward on-set tension. And if they fight in nightgowns, all the better.

Despite glaring plot holes, The Avengers was a pretty good time and succeeded way above expectations. It only makes sense that Marvel would try to recapture that success on the small screen too. And so, it was announced shortly after the film’s release that King of the Nerds Joss Whedon would also bring S.H.I.E.L.D. to television.

Details have been pretty mum for the ABC action series, but now there’s wind to be caught about the show’s central characters. They’re so Whedon-y!

SKYE | This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD | Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS | These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

No word yet on which character will be played by Amy Acker. (TV Line)

Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk With Me opened on 30 screens (as opposed to The Avengers on 4,000) but has since had its order doubled to 60 in light of strong turnout. If it does well with that, more screens will be added. Thus, Whedon has sent out a plea to his loyal fans to boycott Sleepwalk With Me thus preserving his title.

Granted, this was done all in good fun, but I really don’t appreciate being told what to do. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some Weed Killer to drink. (THR)

If you are one of the every single persons on Earth, then chances are that you saw The Avengers this past summer. You probably noticed the raw deal that Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye was treated to. Seriously, when did he become the Aquaman of the Avengers? Renner would like to know too. While promoting The Bourne Legacy, he tells Hero Complex:

”At the end of the day, 90% of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play. I’m literally in there for two minutes, and then all of a sudden…So there’s not a lot of back story or understanding we can really tell about who Clint Barton is, or Hawkeye, and is he working for SHIELD or not. There’s a lot of unanswered questions, even for me. And I was OK with that. At least I was still in the movie. And I was glad for that…”

“I prefer [playing] the good, because if we go to the evil part, or hypnotized or whatever the heck you want to call it, it’s kind of a vacancy. Not even a bad guy, because there’s not really a consciousness to him. The interesting part was being guilty about the bad things I did do when I was hypnotized. I think he’s already an interesting enough character. To really kind of take away who that character is and just have him be this sort of robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses,” he explained. “Again, I could just focus on the task. I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. So yeah, fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No. That doesn’t exist in that time [that he's hypnotized]. It happens to be for most of the movie.”

“You know, there are a lot of people in that movie. And a lot of important characters. And my character, I felt like if I can help serve the story, then I did my job.”

I have to agree with Renner here, who actually did a pretty good job with what he was given. I blame the audience. Kids today just aren’t as interested in following the exploits of an aerodynamics genius as much as they used to be. It’s sad, really.

After shattering box office records and protecting Earth from invading alien forces, Joss Whedon has agreed to write and direct The Avengers 2. Previously, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator had been unclear about whether or not he would return to the franchise but this only makes sense. The first film was Marvel’s biggest commercial and critical success and it seemed that Whedon had fun bringing the characters to the screen.

It also seems that his relationship with Marvel has blossomed from a little over-the-shirt beneath the bleachers to full-on going steady. Whedon is also developing a live-action television show featuring Marvel characters. There’s no word on what that show will be but, one way or the other, this is good news for Eliza Dushku. (EW)

The post In Preparation For ‘The Cabin In The Woods’: A Joss Whedon Retrospective appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
This spring and summer has history-making potential. Between Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope, The Cabin in the Woods, and The AvengersJoss Whedon is poised to get his propers from mainstream audiences. For years he’s been sooooo close to wide appeal but that brass ring has constantly escaped him. He’s picked up fans along the way and that number has grown to the point where he’s being given a real shot with scripting and directing duties on Marvel’s superhero pig-pile.

Since his career has mostly seen him operating on the fringe, it’s expected he’ll shatter the walls that have held him back all of these years. Below is a retrospective of his work for the 0.00002% of the Internet that might not be aware.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

After kicking around Hollywood with writing jobs on sitcoms like Parenthood and Roseanne, Joss Whedon graduated briefly to film writing with 1992′s Buffy the Vampire Slayer starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry. The movie underperformed at the box office but Whedon couldn’t shake the character. Four years later he was able to develop the television series of the same name that would put him on the map. This series became the foundation of the Whedonverse eventually leading to a spin-off and higher-profile projects.

Alien: Resurrection

Against the better judgement of almost everyone, 20th Century Fox was eager to revive the Alien franchise after box office failure of Alien 3. The project proved to be somewhat of a hot potato with directors Danny Boyle, Peter Jackson, Bryan Singer, and South Park’s Trey Parker all passing. Due to the success of Buffy, Whedon was brought in to write the script and subsequently put through the studio’s ringer. Originally the script starred a cloned Newt with the final act taking place on Earth. After re-writing the finale five times, his battle for Earth and the lead character of Newt didn’t make the final film version.

Angel

Seeing the potential in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s supporting character Angel, Whedon spun off a second drama that relocated the vampire with a soul to Los Angeles. The result was a darker, more grown up show that appealed more to male audiences. The series centered around a paranormal detective agency that investigated and dispatched Los Angeles’s demonic underbelly. Don’t let that description dissuade you. The show was awesome.

Firefly/Serenity

Whedon’s futuristic space western followed a crew of rebel smugglers in the year 2517 as they traversed the solar system alluding the Alliance and other threats. The series was criminally mishandled by the programmers at Fox which led to its early cancellation. However, success on DVD lead to the film adaptation, Serenity.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

This musical broken into three acts centers around a lovesick super-villain, his heroic nemesis, and the woman that they both love. It was written exclusively for the Internet during the Writer’s Guild of America Strike and funded by Whedon himself. This allowed he and his writing partners complete control over the final product without the worries of changing story and pacing to fit a television or film format. The series won several awards and helped guarantee that Neil Patrick Harris would be allowed to sing at any televised event of his choosing.

Dollhouse

Feeling pretty bad about their mistreatment of Firefly and seeing a need to televise Eliza Dushku in various sexy outfits, Fox once again went into business with Joss Whedon. The result was the high-concept science-fiction series Dollhouse. On the show, individuals trying to wipe their slate clean and start over volunteer themselves to a service that wipes their memories and reprograms them to fulfill the fantasies and nefarious needs of clients able to afford such services. It was a pretty shakey premise that needed time to find its footing. It took an entire season to do so. In a very un-Fox move, Fox actually allowed the show the opportunity to grow and brought it back for a second season. It was then canceled as it hit its stride.

Looks like heavy delays won’t be enough to keep The Cabin in the Woods down. After sitting on MGM‘s shelf for two-and-a-half years while the studio worked out their money issues, the horror-skewing horror film just kicked off SXSW with a bang. Reviews are in and the buzz is strong. Naturally, it‘s time to talk sequel. Or sequels, seeing as it is a horror movie. Kind of.

Co-writer Joss Whedon spoke to the idea, “Drew [Goddard] and I, we have no artistic integrity. We also built that world so grandly in our minds that we often do go, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could do the bit where …’ There’s definitely more to be told in that story, but right now we’re both very fixated on, ‘We hope somebody likes it, and of course pays to come see it.’ But there’s always a bridge there to cross. We definitely didn’t come into this going, ‘Oh, we have an idea for a franchise.’ We came in going, ‘We have three acts.’ Which is more than any writer usually gets. That’s a gift.”

We can see what all of the secrecy is about when the film opens in theaters on April 13th. But after that, Whedon is encouraged to never keep secrets from us again. If we can’t have trust then we can’t have us. (Cinema Blend)

Over the past five years or so, the separate facets of South by Southwest (Music, Film, and Interactive) have morphed from “insider industry conference” to “giant event that people will make fun of you for if you don’t go.” Located in Austin, Texas, and taking place over two weeks that overlap with the University of Texas’ spring break, SXSW has long served as a confluence of bands hoping to get signed, regular folks wanting to be entertained, and industry professionals looking to network, learn, and sign.

Oh, and everyone is also there to drink.

Since we’re primarily a film and television site, we’ll keep this discussion limited to SXSW Film, though if you’re attending, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to dabble in the other trades. Even though the conferences for the three respective disciplines are somewhat staggered, there’s still plenty going on both before and after their allotted times.

When Is It?

The film component of SXSW consists of two parts. The Film Festival (featuring feature and short films submitted for festival awards and recognition) runs for nine days from March 9-17, while the Film Conference (featuring panels, discussions, presentations, and generally more insider-y and fanboy fare) runs from March 9-13, concurrent with the Interactive Conference.

Getting In

Though SXSW Film is getting a higher and higher profile every year, it’s still not nearly as popular as the music portion, and badges required for conference events and many screenings are still available for $595 bucks. Starting about six months before the start dates, you can also apply for a press pass that will get you a significant discount or cover the badge entirely, depending on how prestigious your gig is.

Lodging

Hotels can be a bitch, as many of the rooms are priced for people bankrolled by projects, companies, and media outlets. Strike early, be willing to share a room (you won’t spend any time in it anyway, if you’re doing it right), or get online and look for rooms to rent near downtown. There are tons.

What’s On Tap

In addition to the official SXSW Film site, there are many websites run by people whose full-time job it is to keep track of everything going on during SXSW Film, so don’t expect an exhaustive list here, but a few highlights (bear in mind there are literally hundreds of things I’m omitting that might speak more to your tastes):

3 R’s of Horror: Remakes, Reboots and Rediscoveries

A Conversation with Cliff Martinez

Alternative Film Events: Site Specific and Beyond

Artists Scoring Movies: A Look Into the Latest Trend of Film Composing

Arts Criticism 140 Characters at a Time

Behind the Pure Evil (The Saga of Todd & the Book of Pure Evil)

Beyond Netflix and iTunes: Your Film’s Unique Digital Distribution Strategy

Beyond the 1 Sheet – Pen to Paper Returns

Bringing Sexy Back: Where’s The Line Today?

Carbon Film Quote – Putting the Carbon Footprint in Your Production Bid

Casting on a Budget: Get the Best and the Rightest

A Conversation with Joss Whedon

Coppola Vs. Kittens: Pro Filmmaking’s Online Future

(The list is actually about seven times longer than this snippet, but I’ll spare you.)

As you can see, the panels run from really specific topics such as “How Fast Can Audiences Drive Edits?” to more generalized items like “A Conversation With Joss Whedon,” so while you don’t have to be a filmmaker or insider to enjoy any of these, you might need to be one to realize value from the $595 you’re laying down.

HOWEVER…

There are also many, many films being screened, just like there would be at any other film festival. Badgeholders get priority, but residual tickets are often available to the public as well. If the list of conference topics struck you as a little dry, then you might find a bit more value here. And remember: you don’t necessarily need a badge for the film screenings, but you do necessarily need one for the panels and topics.

There are too many films at SXSW Film to list, let alone synopsize, so we’ll preemptively thank Playlist for doing the heavy lifting here and link you to their piece on the 15 most anticipated movies at SXSW. Thanks, Playlist!

What Else? WHAT ELSE?

The most alluring part of SXSW in my experience has been what I will call the X-factor. There is no better nexus for creative young minds than Austin, so while the schedules and films may serve as the enlightening and entertaining part of the trip, the backdrop serves as the fun part. Austin has perhaps the best nightlife of any city I’ve ever visited, so getting boxed out of your favorite screening serves as an opportunity to run around this playground with thousands of like-minded people with no real agenda. It’s pretty great.

That’s it. If you’re not making it this year, get there next year. It’s a blast.

Comic book fans may have missed this new trailer for The Avengers during last night’s Super Ball sporting event, so here it is again. And this time it’s slightly longer because airing something online doesn’t cost $3 million per second. Let’s watch together and take note of all the badass things that happen.

 • Civilians running from whatever menace Loki has aligned himself with
 • Badass S.H.I.E.L.D. jets being parked neatly (Coulson demands it)
 • Iron Man wearing a Black Sabbath t-shirt
 • Thor surfing on a jet
 • Alien ninjas jumping from the sky above New York
 • Captain America and Thor using their shield and hammer to protect the team from raining flames and debris
 • Lasers
 • A Samuel L. Jackson pep talk
 • Cool 360 degree group shot
 • Tony Stark’s New York penthouse
 • The Hulk jumping in the air and tackling rockets

So, yeah. Pretty great. Ball’s in your court now The Amazing Spider-Man. Amaze us.

A long, winding road has brought us here to the trailer for The Cabin in the Woods. The Joss Whedon-scripted, Drew Goddard-directed horror film suffered from many delays as cash-strapped MGM was busy pulling themselves back together. But don’t let those push-backs speak as a criticism to the quality of the film. Actually, it looks like it was worth the wait.

Chris Hemsworth (in a pre-Thor role), Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Kristen Connolly, and Anna Hutchison star as five friends who travel into the woods to party in a rustic cabin. You think you know the story from there, but it looks like a lot more is happening. Rather than your typical slasher or monster attack, it’s actually some sort of shadowy organization holed up in a control room calling the shots, activating force-fields and creatures sent after the young campers. It’s ike The Truman Show, except in this case, Ed Harris is into torture porn.

Marvel has finally given us our first look at The Avengers. Well, I guess we’ve seen all of them before in their own solo movies. But now we have a look at them hanging out together. Except it’s actually the second time we’ve seen them bro out if you count the mini-trailer that aired after the Captain America end credits.

Look, what do you want from me? There are lasers, explosions, Robert Downey Jr. lipping off, and Thor. Everybody loves some Thor. The action here looks pretty impressive. It makes me want to team up with a ragtag group of extraordinary individuals and throw one another through plate glass windows and such. Then again, I just watched The Kids Are Alright and it had the same effect.

This cellphone video of The Avengers shooting demonstrates terror and pandemonium on the streets of downtown Cleveland. Probably. We don’t actually see any Avengers, so it could just be a particularly bad Cleveland morning, but we’ll give the city the benefit of the doubt.

Cleveland seemed like a random, but inspired choice when it was announced as the primary filming location for The Avengers. Between this and Batman shooting in Pittsburgh, it would appear that midwestern chambers of commerce have a stranglehold on the comic book films.

Additionally, from this same scene, we’ve got some set photos that include Chris Evans looking wholesome and an entire city block blown to shit. (Click next for photos).

If you were one of the lucky few that stayed after the credits of Thor, you were treated to a scene that in my opinion was better than anything in the actual movie: A scene between Stellan Skarsgard, Samuel L. Jackson, and the Cosmic Cube. It had a sense of mystery about it that the rest of the movie definitely could have used.

Call it a coincidence, but the scene wasn’t directed by Kenneth Branagh, but by Avengers director Joss Whedon. It all comes from an interview between Skarsgard and Empire, in which he divulges absolutely no other details about The Avengers except for his appearing in it, for fear of the Disney death squads who would bring violent death to anyone who reveals any of movie’s secrets. So, if you’re a Whedon completist, maybe you should try to get a hold of a DVD copy of the Thor post-credits scene – maybe there’s a cool director’s commentary.

There was a lot of distribution action today, ensuring that several fanboy faves will actually get released despite frustratingly long delays up to this point. So let’s start off with a project that’s been in limbo for ages now.

Cabin in the Woods looks like it has found a home in Lionsgate. The Joss Whedon-helmed horror pic has so far suffered a year-and-a-half delay that seems to have nothing to do with the quality of the film and everything to do with the corporate typhoon that took place at MGM. Expect release news soon. (Deadline)

Summit Entertainment has snatched up the U.S. rights to the fabled sci-fi novel Ender’s Game, having gotten Wolverine director Gavin Hood attached to the project as well. Summit is waving a tearful goodbye to Twilight, so they’re on the lookout for a new franchise, and this could very well be it. (Deadline)

Fox has taken back Shawn Levy‘s Kodachrome, which Fox had first-look rights to, but didn’t actually get a chance to consider before Levy sold the project to Dreamworks. It was apparently an honest mistake, but I will not let a simple thing like the truth get in the way of a perceived feud between Shawn Levy and Fox. THEY WANT BLOOD! Anyway, Fox decided it does want Kodachrome and exercised its first-look option. (Variety)

Mark Ruffalo made his directorial debut with the film Sympathy for Delicious, the story of a paralyzed homeless man who discovers the power of healing hands. So he becomes a rock star. The film opens April 29, and as a respectful closer to Ruffalo’s interview for Delicious, he addressed how he’s preparing to play Bruce Banner in The Avengers.

“We have to get the script,” Ruffalo said. “We’ve been working on the script which has been fun. I’ve lost 15 pounds. They don’t want me all ripped up but they want me to be lean and mean. Trying to get the psychology of somebody who knows at any moment they could literally tear the roof off of wherever they are. Trying to bring his, I don’t know, something real to that and totally fantastic. Like I said, I’ve been working with Joss Whedon on the script with the rest of the cast and we start rehearsals soon. Hopefully we’ll have the mother of all comic book movies for you soon.”

He’ll be the third Hulk in 10 years. Don’t think that doesn’t give Ruffalo pause. “Yeah, man, are you kidding me? I’ve got some big shoes to fill. I kind of look at it as my generation’s Hamlet. We’re all going to get a shot at it.”

Ruffalo said he begins shooting The Avengers the first week in May.

Listen up, True Believers. Our inside sources at The Daily Bugle say the villain for Joss Whedon‘s Thor or Captain America: The First Avenger.

Oh no, Marvel movie fans. It looks like Doctor Doom couldn’t wait until the summer to find out wh The Avengers will be taking on, so he broke into Marvel’s offices and stole the info, then leaked it to the internet. We don’t know 100% if this is true, but we have good reason to believe…

SPOILER ALERT. Don’t look past the ridiculous picture below if you don’t want to know who Cap and the gang are tangling with next year.

According to the internerds, The Avengers will figh Thor‘s brother Loki, who’ll be played by Tom Hiddleston in the Thor movie. Here’s more detail on how all these movies form an intricate spider-web of plot, even though that spider guy is owned by a different studio:

How does Loki fit in exactly? Well, we’d hear rumors that the Skrulls (and Loki too) would somehow fit into The Avengers and that’s apparently true. Loki, from Thor, will somehow get his hands on the Cosmic Cube, from Captain America: The First Avenger, in order to summon the Skrulls, an evil, alien race who look like reptiles but have similar several human characteristics.

Loki. Skrulls. Cubes. Finally, one film dares to incorporate all three. I hear No Strings Attached tried to in its first draft, but was significantly rewritten. (/Film, Latino Review, AICN)

Firefly” fans are hardcore and extremely unwilling to find a new thing to obsess over.

Browncoats are apparently not pleased that the low-rated, cult-worshipped sci-fi series lives on only in official Joss Whedon penned comic books. Or that the film spin-off Serenity flopped at the box office, therefore not sparking a franchise. So, they’re gonna do what any sensible fans would do. No, not quietly accept disappointment and move on with their lives – they’re starting a fundraising campaign to buy the rights to the franchise.

It started when “Firefly” star Nathan Fillion said in a recent interview, “If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to “Firefly,” make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet.” That sounds like one of those things actors say to be nice, but would have no intention of ever following through on. Hardcore fans took it as a call to action and set-up HelpNathanBuyFirefly.com, which will be used to – did you guess it? – help Nathan buy “Firefly.” Naturally, their Facebook fan page already has over 52,000 likes.

To buy just the series rights, you’re talking millions of dollars. That isn’t Robocop statue money, it’s Hollywood power player / crazy Texas oil tycoon money. Then you’ve got to convince Fox to sell the rights, which they don’t gotta do. Even if they were crazy enough to sell, then you’d have to raise money to produce the series. That could be more millions, depending on the scale.

I’m not saying it isn’t possible. And I’m not saying anyone should stop loving a TV show cancelled after one season in 2002. What I do think is that if you’re gonna raise millions of dollars of people’s money, why not put it to a worthy cause: like funding my $40 million “Family Matters” fan film. I will keep the universe of Urkel, Urkelbot and Waldo Geraldo Faldo alive forever. (Cinema Blend)

Marvel nerds assemble… in New Mexico.

Time to earn the ultimate Avengers super-fan badge. Why be content with just camping out in front of the theater for 2 weeks to see the first midnight screening when you can have a part in the goddamn movie? If you shouted “by Odin’s beard” at the screen, then head to Sante Fe, New Mexico for the open casting call for Joss Whedon‘s superhero epic. You might get to down drinks with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) or stare at Black Widow Scarlett Johansson‘s breasts so hard, you develop a psychic link with them.

To try out, go to the corner of Old Santa Fe Trail and Paseo de Peralta in Santa Fe at 10 am. If you blow the audition by wearing a Green Lantern outfit, do not fear. Producers from “In Plain Sight” and”Breaking Bad” will also be there looking for talent, though I assume you shouldn’t wear the Green Lantern outfit to those auditions either. Word of advice: wear casual clothes. (TheWrap)

MGM has been having troubles lately, what with their filing for bankruptcy and their current voyage down the yellow brick road of financial stability. Though Bond 23 and The Hobbit are greenlit, there’s been some question about Joss Whedon‘s Cabin In The Woods and the remake of Red Dawn. These movies have been completed for months, but they are not in front of eyeballs at the multiplex, cause of MGM‘s money troubles. Luckily, there’s a deal in the works that will save these films from a fate worse than a Commie invasion: sitting on the shelf for even longer than they already have.

Sony and MGM are hammering out an agreement that might give Sony rights to distribute old and new projects, like Red Dawn and the upcoming Bond films. They would also co-finance upcoming Bond movies, because putting your money behind Bond is a safe bet. Especially when he goes all-in. Daniel Craig, you have one hell of a poker face.

We’ll see if the deal pans out, and if we get to see these movies. Or they might end up dead… in a Cabin In The Woods. Because they’re a bunch of stupid college kids. (Cinema Blend)
