Though the film was shelved for a while, then reshot because the Chinese objected to being portrayed as one-dimensionally, anonymously evil, but it may have worked out in the end for the producers of Red Dawn, due mostly to the fact that its cast got REALLY famous while the film was in limbo.

Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, and the non-Josh Chris Hemsworth have found varying degrees of mainstream and indie success in the past three years.

While most remakes are pandering and wildly uneecesary, this film seems like one that should be remade every 20 years or so, just to remind us that foreigners are evil and America’s youth loves killing people.

The post I Think Peeta Mellark From ‘The Hunger Games’ Is Making Me Gay appeared first on Screen Junkies.

This isn’t something I particularly want to talk about, but it’s the biggest entertainment story in my life right now, and it sure beats “The 7 Worst Storms In Movies” after the tornadoes in Dallas, so it seems to be the right move.

Over the weekend, I saw The Hunger Games. I thought it was a very fun film. I read the book and sort of enjoyed it for what it was. The film had a lot of ground to cover, so the film is paced a little too quickly to savor – it is the type of film that is experienced more than watched. The casting was inspired, with Lenny Kravitz, Wes Bentley, Stanley Tucci, Woddy Harrelson, and Elizabeth Banks all nailing their supporting roles.

In the starring role, Jennifer Lawrence was able to carry the film effortlessly, but the actor/character I would like to discuss for the next three pages or so is Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta Mellark. I’m normally not one for male teen heartthrobs (normally), but time makes fools of us all. I think I love Peeta, and I’m wrestling with what “love” means more than I have at any other time in my life. It’s not an enviable position, but it’s where I find myself.

I can’t say that I romantically love Peeta Mellark ¬ that would be ridiculous. But I do want to dedicate the rest of my life to ensuring that he never feels any pain and is sheltered from all evil in the world. I don’t know why this is the case. I read the book and appreciated Peeta as the baker’s son who risked physical injury to give Katniss some burnt bread. He seemed like a nice guy, but he didn’t even manage to be my frontrunner in the Peeta-Katniss-Gale love triangle. He was just a dude in the story until Josh Hutcherson was able to dig his finely-manicured claws into the character.

I had never understood the infatuation with non-threatening, good looking male leads until now. And let me tell you, I get it. That damn boy cast a spell on me, and now there’s nothing I can do but post photos of him on Pinterest and doodle “Mr. Penn Hutcherson” on scrap paper until either he loses his looks (not likely) or I manage to get over him (also not likely).

They say if you love something, set it free. I love Peeta Mellark (or is it Josh Hutcherson?) so much that I want him to be with Katniss. My affection for Hutcherson’s selfless tribute knows no bounds. I can’t force this boy, this…man to act in anything but his best interest. While I’m confident that Peeta and I would make a great life for each other, perhaps in an artists’ colony in Santa Fe, I just don’t think I can offer him what Katniss can. Sure, Peeta and I could adopt, but I feel he deserves his own biological children.

It merits mentioning that I’m a bit of a foodie, Peeta’s background as a baker, throwing around 100-lb. bags of flour all day long, really speaks to me. Hutcherson has breathed life into a character I felt tepidly about in the original book. But one look at him in the film, and I melted. Now, all I can think about is hopping in our Subaru and heading over to a bakery on a Sunday morning. We’d sit with our coffees and read the New York Times (him on his iPad, me with the paper version) while listening to The Fray’s “How To Save A Life.”

Also, I know I’ve already mentioned that Peeta’s past as a baker totally does it for me, but the thought of he and I making bruschetta with bread that HE BAKED just puts a smile on my face. Even if we weren’t having company over, we could just whip some up real quickly then watch a couple episodes of True Blood. It’s too good to be true, really.

I don’t like Twilight, I don’t like Zac Efron, but I would put myself in harm’s way for Peeta Mellark. I found myself jealous that I didn’t get a chance to eat the berries with him, spending the rest of my moments losing myself in his Hutcherson-tastic eyes and carefully mused hair.

I don’t know where the next two books will take Peeta – in fact, I’m scared to even read them to find he suffers in any way. (SPOILER) As readers of the book no doubt noticed in the film, Peeta manages to negotiate The Hunger Games withboth legs intact, an achievement that eluded him in the book. Upon realizing that future films may also be kinder to Peeta than Suzanne Collins was, I have decided to forego the next books (which I have heard weren’t that good anyway), and pretend that Peeta Mellark only exists in the movies, where he could never, ever, get bitten in the leg by giant hellhounds.

I leave The Hunger Games a much more confused and humbled man than when I entered it. I now harbor some unfamiliar platonic feelings for a fictional boy in a fictional deathmatch in a fictional dystopia. If the purpose of a movie is to get its audience out of its comfort zone and think about some unpleasant things, then, in my opinion, The Hunger Games is the most successful film ever made. Ever.

Lionsgate premiered the long trailer for The Hunger Games this morning. It’s got everything you’d expect. Attractive but terrified teens, the makings of a love triangle, and outlandish facial hair. Seriously, Wes Bentley. What are you thinking? Facial hair like that would even get you beat up in Williamsburg.

It does look like an impressive effort. We aren’t shown any kid-on-kid violence in this preview, but we are privy to the training sessions where children are taught the right way to decapitate mannequins. It’s all about your follow-through.

The Hunger Games continues to share its fellas and I’m afraid to say that we’re all going to have to pick a team. It’s the rules nowadays.

Yesterday we got our first look at Liam Hemsworth’s Gale and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta via Entertainment Weekly. Today, EW has a few more looks. First, we see Peeta looking sullen at his crappy baking job. Then, there’s Hemsworth’s Gale with Jennifer Lawrence‘s Katniss. I’m mostly impressed that we haven’t been subjected to any shirtless pictures yet. But we can likely expect some flimsy excuses for getting the guys to disrobe. “Oops. There’s breadcrumbs on my shirt. Better remove it and step into this dramatic lighting.”

Entertainment Weekly got the first look at Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson in their Hunger Games garb. The actors play Gale and Peeta, the two guys who Jennifer Lawrence‘s Katniss will have a difficult time deciding between.

Hutcherson plays Peeta, a peer of Katniss’s who fights alongside her who may not be what he seems. Hemsworth plays Gale, her childhood friend who she has strong feelings for despite the fact that he tucks in his t-shirts. Looks like she’s got a tough choice ahead of her. Seems silly to me. I don’t know. Maybe it would be smarter to focus less on boys and more on NOT GETTING KILLED IN THE DEATH TOURNAMENT, DON’TCHYATHINK?

A strange assortment of The Hunger Games set pics hit the street today, and they feature Elizabeth Banks looking like a  Victorian flapper girl, the The Hunger Games HQ looking forbidding, and Josh Hutcherson looking like an underemployed actor. Beyond that…there’s not much.

Aside from the building design, the only thing to really comment on here is Elizabeth Banks‘ getup, which doesn’t look quite as dystopian as I would have though. She kind of looks like zombie Eleanor Roosevelt, which I guess is dystopian, but is mostly just awful. I’m assuming the umbrella is strictly for utilitarian purposes and won’t make it into the movie, but I’m hesitant to rule anything out after seeing that outfit. HEY GIRLFRIEND!

In terms of Hunger Games news, we’ve heard quite a bit about what actors will be cast as which murdered tributes, but what about the buildings? Who’s being cast as what buildings? No, that’s not right. What I mean is, “what’s the set looking like?”

Below are some sneak peaks into the developing set of The Hunger Games, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. You can also catch a ride on the District 12 coal train, which is a lot like the soul train, only there’s more teen killing involved.

Meanwhile, Screen Junkies already reported that Lenny Kravitz was likely to be cast in The Hunger Games, but now the official word is that he’s playing Cinna the stylist. A girl’s gotta look fabulous before she gets shot at? Yeah, that actually sounds about right.

Three Warner Bros movies got release dates, so mark your calendars. Or just let the incessant marketing next year remind you. Either way works.

Dark Shadows, a gothy new Tim Burton / Johnny Depp love-fest, opens May 11, 2012. Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and Helena Bonham Carter also star in this 60′s cult TV show turned feature film. Get ready to see vampires, ghosts and ghouls during the scariest time of the year: mid-May. oooOOOooo.

Rivals, starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as two guys who I’m sure will not being competing against one another, opens Aug. 10, 2012. It’s the story of two rival political candidates, directed by Jay Roach. I would have hoped they’d be running together on the Frat Party ticket. Ah well.

However, before all that, you and Dwayne Johnson are going on a journey together. Specifically, a Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 3D journey. Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens will be along for your crazy ride come Jan. 27, 2012. It’s sure to be a journey… into pure cinematic genius. (Deadline)

According to new rumors, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and Stanley Tucci have been OK’d for Hunger Gaming. In keeping with the tradition of naming everyone funny, Harrelson’s character would be Seneca Crane, the Head Gamemaker. He’d be like the Milton-Bradley of games where people die. The Hunger Games is all about a group of teens with odd names you love and care about, like Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Prim (Willow Shields). But who gave them those goofy, post-apocalyptic monickers? I assume their mother, who it’s now confirmed will be played by Paula Malcomson from SyFy‘s “Caprica.” If the movies are like the books, and who knows if that’ll be the case, Malcomson’s character is worried about her children participating in the life-threatening Hunger Games. Even in the future, moms worry too much.

I’m not too interested in seeing these Hunger Games that all the tweens are talking about, but I’ll tell you what I’m talking about: the hotness of Elizabeth Banks. Not only is she a very funny actress, who stars in”30 Rock,” Role Models and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but she’s also very, very easy on the ol’ eyeballs I am now somewhat more intrigued by this movie. Somewhat.

Banks is in talks to star as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games, alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. Trinket is a beaurocrat, an escort for futuristic death-match participants and a bubbly airhead who regularly changes her hair color. All three of those are listed on her business cards.

Having locked down an attractive white girl (Jennifer Lawrence) for the female lead in Hunger Games, the produces were left wondering “Where the white boys at?”

They seem to have found a couple in Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. Hemsworth is currently the frontrunner for Gale Hawthorne, while Hutcherson is considered the man to beat for Peeta Mallark. Deadline reports that Hawthorne is Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) hunting partner, while Mallark is “the baker’s son.” Which I guess means that there’s a baker in the mix, too. No news on who might play that role, so I’m gonna go ahead and throw out John C. Reilly.

Josh Hutcherson is next starring in Detention with Dane Cook, so he could probably use this ego boost whereas Hemsworth is best-known for his on-again, off-again relationship with Miley Cyrus. This is gonna be the best movie…(Deadline)

One of these lucky actors will have tween girls screaming at them whenever they go outside, and not because they’re hideous to look at. The opposite reason, in fact. Lionsgate is looking for a heartthrobbish dude to star in Hunger Games – a Twilight-in-waiting – as Jennifer Lawrence‘s love interest.

So who are the contestants in this dystopian death match of a casting call? Front runners include: Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right), Evan Peters (Kickass), Hunter Parish “Weeds“), Lukas Pill (Battle: Los Angeles) and Alexander Ludwig (Escape To Witch Mountain).

The role they’re vying for is Peeta. I don’t know if the character is an animal rights nut, but I do know that he claims to be madly in love with Lawrence’s character Katniss right before they enter the life-or-death survival games. Is he for real or is he just playing her to help get precious, precious SurvivaPoints? You’ll have to watch the book or see the movie, and so far, I plan to do neither. (Hollywood Reporter)

Then movies like The Player and Scream came out theatrically before I went back and discovered Woody Allen. Now we live in a world of Charlie Kaufman and “Community,” and I think Detention is the ultimate payoff for the meta movement.

Riley (Shanley Caswell) believes she’s being stalked by the killer of a film series within the film called Cinderhella. Clapton (Josh Hutcherson) is studying Road House to prepare for a fight with Billy (Parker Bagley). Cheerleader Ione even says she’s typecast, and can you guess who she’s named after?

Already the characters are making references, and I love that. I feel rewarded for knowing what they’re talking about, but I feel like I know more about them by what they’ve watched in their lives. Self-referential horror gets an update when they show a clip from Cinderhella and it’s all torture porn with a religious morality. A work print of Cinderhella III they download is several layers of meta.

The references are really under their breath, like Clapton noticing he’s wearing a red shirt at a dangerous time. The story is going on anyway, but there’s room for it. These are also perceptive references. The ‘90s movies were based on a formula that hasn’t been properly addressed yet. Sherlock Moriarty? Brilliant. Or they’re punctuations to scenes. Look, I like references, stop hassling me!

The film treat high school stereotypes as fun, not self-involved tragedy. The backstory for Billy’s rage is a wonderful goofy homage to The Fly, and maybe Videodrome? Ione’s superficiality is a joy, not evil insecurity.

I compare Detention to Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. I think Scott Pilgrim was the first movie to really create an alternate reality with film. We used to see fantasy movies with puppetry and special effects as our alternate realms. Edgar Wright actually changed the laws of time with the language of film. Cuts and camera moves covered time differently yet we understood it because we’re well versed in film. It made sense but it wasn’t our world.

Joseph Khan does it too. The entire film pays off, but even if he were just including random non-sequiturs about bears and spaceships I would love that. The film ultimately goes back to 1992 to meta it up. There’s such a celebratory spirit to the whole thing, I adore this movie.

Michael Caine Accepts ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ Paycheck http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/michael-caine-accepts-journey-2-the-mysterious-island-paycheck/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/michael-caine-accepts-journey-2-the-mysterious-island-paycheck/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Michael Caine has admitted on record that the only reason he did Jaws: The Revenge was for the money and the free trip to the Bahamas. "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific!" So, there's not much surprise that he's agreed to co-star opposite the Rock in the Hawaii-based Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Plus, he gets to work with Cats & Dogs 2: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore director Brad Peyton. What actor would turn down that opportunity?! In the film, he'll portray Josh Hutcherson's adventure-seeking granddad who wanders off and winds up on a mysterious island. This will be an action-heavy role for Caine that will see him squaring off against giant bees. If you listen closely, that beeping sound is a dump truck full of money backing up to Oscar-winner Michael Caine's terrific house. (THR)

Dwayne Johnson Joins ‘Journey To The Center Of The Earth’ Sequel http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/dwayne-johnson-joins-journey-to-the-center-of-the-earth-sequel/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/dwayne-johnson-joins-journey-to-the-center-of-the-earth-sequel/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's slow transformation into Brendan Fraser is nearly complete. The wrestler-turned-actor (Walking Tall, Southland Tales, Chef Boyardee commercials) has signed on as the lead in the upcoming Journey To The Center Of Earth sequel. Many expected that Josh Hutcherson would make the leap to leading man for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, but it seems that he's riding shotgun this time around. In the film, Johnson plays Hutcherson's mom's boyfriend who tags along for the exhilirating adventure when the boy travels to an unchartered island to find his missing grandfather. Seems like a lot of trouble. Did you check the local A&P, Josh? That's the first place I look when my granddad wanders. (THR)

The young actor is teaming up with "almost" Captain America Dane Cook for some sh*tty sounding horror-comedy. Detention, written and directed by Torque autuer Joseph Kahn, "centers on teens who must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is a slasher-movie killer who has seemingly come to life." Hmmm, Dane Cook starring in a movie about a copycat. Go figure. (Variety)

Watch Josh Hutcherson’s ‘Spider-Man’ Audition For Some Reason http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/watch-josh-hutchersons-spider-man-audition-for-some-reason/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/watch-josh-hutchersons-spider-man-audition-for-some-reason/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 The road to casting Andrew Garfield for Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot was a bumpy one at best. As the time for a decision drew near, the filmmakers whittled their list of hopefuls down to five young actors. One of these hopefuls was Josh Hutcherson, who was once the rumored front-runner to walk in Tobey Maguire's shadow. Though we'll never see Hutcherson play Parker on the big screen, we can now see him in an awkwardly-staged audition video. Latino Review was able to unearth the tape that caught the attention of Sony execs and Marc Webb. It's rumored to have been choreographed by fight choreographer Larnell Stovell, and shows Hutcherson's Parker squaring off against a gang of high school bullies, who he easily flings into well-placed exercise mats. It really is such a good thing that those mats were there. Check out the video here and let us know what you think of Hutcherson as Parker. He looks like too much like he should be playing keyboards for Panic At The Disco to me.
