When adapting a project as nuanced and important as He-Man, you need someone who knows what they’re doing. You need a professional accustomed to making Alex Pettyfer not look ridiculous in fur underpants. Sony knows this, and it seems they’re not f&*^ing around.

The studio has approached G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu to helm their long-gestating Masters of the Universe film. I really do feel like he’s the perfect guy for the job. While the first G.I. Joe movie was brainless fun, Retaliation looks more believable and grounded. Or as believable and grounded as a movie about ninjas fighting on cliff faces can be. My point is, yes, hire that man. I’m ready for a gritty take on the world of Eternia. And to see Alexandra Breckinridge wear Teela’s golden ram-horned halter top. (THR)

After a hugely successful turn in Fast Five, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in talks to join another sequel. Though he could be using his talents to play a biologist on the verge of a groundbreaking discovery or concert pianist, he’s chosen to take the role of Muscle-y Guy in G.I. Joe 2.

Reports are that he’ll play Roadblock — the Army chef turned infantryman who carries around an M2 Browning machine gun. The story is developing but it’s also looking likely that Channing Tatum will return for the Jon Chu-directed sequel. With JJ Abrams needing extra time to make Star Trek 2 enjoyable, Paramount needs to release G.I. Joe 2 next summer so expect more soon. But, seriously, time’s ticking. You really don’t want to hurry such rich characters and plot-lines that center around secret bases hidden inside volcanoes. (Deadline)

Do we really need a sequel to 2009′s G.I Joe? Box office receipts aside, did anyone come away from that movie with any real satisfaction? The whole thing smacks of film making as a numbers game, and the search for a sequel director isn’t helping, as Paramount is batting around 3 different but equally middling talents for the job. Jon Chu (Step Up 2, 3), Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown), and F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen) are all being considered.

Honestly though, who cares? And that’s not even a snarky, sarcastic blogger question. I really want to talk to someone who cares passionately about either G.I Joe getting a sequel, or any of these three directors. Okay, I will personally admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for Step Up 2 The Streets. I like movies about break-dancing and I saw it on Valentines Day 2008 with my ex girlfriend, okay? There, I said it. Does that mean I want to see G.I Joe pop and lock all over Cobra Commander’s shiny face mask? Yes? Did I just accidentally endorse Jon Chu as the lesser of 3 evils because he knows how to shoot people dancing? Fine. Congrats to everyone! Enjoy your paychecks! We’ll be enjoying the fruits of your labor on coast-to-coast flights, and on HBO at 3 am sometime in the near future. (The Playlist)

The Justin Bieber biopic has found its director, and a more fitting choice could not have been made. His name: Jon Chu.

"Who’s Jon Chu," you ask? Oh, I don’t know. He’s only the director behind a little film called Step Up 3D, 2010′s hottest dance based 3D movie! That’s who Jon Chu is, b*tch! Who the hell are you?

Cinema Blend is reporting that over 20 directors applied for the job, but Chu ultimately won out because of his previous experience with 3D films. That, and he was the only one of the bunch who wasn’t a convicted sex offender.

Rest easy, Justin. Jon Chu won’t try to touch you in your bikini area.
