Outlaws like Bonnie Parker and Helen Morgan have secured their place in the history books for being bad-ass women who take what they want. They’ll be immortalized once again when Lawless opens in theaters on August 29th. However, as bad as these girls are they’ll take a backseat to the characters played by Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska.

In John Hillcoat‘s Prohibition-era Western, the ladies star as Maggie, a sexy Moonshine cook, and Bertha Minnix, a mandolin player. Don’t underestimate the mandolin, you guys. It’s difficult to play and even harder to tune.

Mia Wasikowska had a busy 2010 with Alice in Wonderland and The Kids Are All Right, and it doesn’t look like 2011 will provide any respite for this poor girl and her hard life. Despite protests from human rights’ groups all over the world, Wasikowska is set to appear in Stoker, the English-language debut of Oldboy director and iPhone user Park Chan-wook, and The Wettest Country in the World, a prohibition drama from director John Hillcoat.

Her tiny arms quivering from overexertion, Wasikowska appeared before the press and said”I am very happy to have the opportunity to work with these fine filmmakers. I am also hungry, please help me.” She was then hurriedly rushed backstage where multiple spectators reported hearing angry shouting and sobbing.

Wasikowska’s next movie is Jane Eyre, which is going to be released into theaters on March 11. If the early returns look good enough, it has been reported that she will be allowed to go outside for an hour or two if she promises to stay quiet. (Collider)

Christmas has come early for John Hillcoat. He was all frownies last year when funding dropped out for his drama The Wettest County In The World. Turns out, he can get wet after all.

The project is now back on with Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy up for the lead roles. Originally, LaBeouf, Ryan Gosling, Michael Shannon, and Amy Adams were on board last year to play the family of criminal bootleggers. Since then, Michael Shannon has dropped out and there’s no update on the other two. Does this mean we won’t get to see Christian Bale fight a bear? (LA Times)

Christian Bale vs. Bear vs. Friends in ‘The Revenant’

John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition) is attached to direct The Revenant with Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, How to Berate a Cinematographer) in talks to star. Bale’s character would be a 19th century frontiersman who is left to die by his friends after being mauled by a bear, and eventually sets out to take his revenge on them.

Um, is it just me, or shouldn’t he be taking his revenge out on the bear and its family? Sorry your friends didn’t fight off a bear for you, dude. Chances are they quickly assessed the situation and came to the the conclusion that IT’S A BEAR. Now you’re going to make them pay for using their God-given natural instincts?
