With Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coen Brothers give us a pure look at New York City and Greenwich Village before all the trannies moved in. What a time it was. Everything looked almost out of focus and you could play with your cat on the subway without fear of someone snatching it out of your hands and running off.

We still have five months before the film hits theaters but if the previews are any indication, John Goodman and his Lloyd Christmas haircut steal the show. “Folk singer with a cat. Is that part of your act? Every time you play a C major, you puke a hairball?” He’s kidding, of course, but that would be pretty awesome to see. Take notes, Ke$ha.

When last we checked in on John Goodman in a college setting, he was abusing his position as coach of the football team and making life miserable for nerds. What Monsters University offers is a more mature and nerd-tolerant Goodman.

The Monsters, Inc. prequel takes us back to Sully and Mike Wazowski’s school days to learn how the duo first met, what lead them down the path to becoming complete sell outs, and since its college, all the hallucinogens they took and asses they tapped. Gotta say though, I’m a little jealous. I went to a small liberal arts college and the girls at Monster University are much less busted than the ones at my school.

In news that serves as a refreshing sorbet after the heavy entrees that were the passings of Tony Scott and Phyllis Diller, John Goodman is in talks to join the third installation of The Hangover. You know, the one that promises to simultaneously “mix things up” but also “give you more of what you loved about the first two?”

All that is known is that Goodman is up for a “small part,” which is ripe for satire because the man is fucking enormous, possibly as a villain. He will be joining Ken Jeong and Heather Graham in the third and final installment, so…yeah.

So John Goodman will either be playing a cliched crime boss, or possibly Zach Galifianakis’ uncle. Either way, I think I speak for much of our readership when I say that we’re very excited to watch this movie on our iPads two years after this film hits theaters during a weather delay at O’Hare.

Just when you’re ready to count out NBC, they drop a bombshell like this on the America public…AND TOTALLY REDEEM THEMSELVES!

Of course, I’m kidding. I’m pretty sure that NBC has been abandoned by GE overseers and is now just a scientific study in chaos theory at its randomest. The previous weird news is that Roseanne Barr is working on a pilot called Downwardly Mobile, in which her character runs a mobile home park. Today’s weird addendum is that John Goodman might be jumping onboard. As you may or may not remember, depending on your age, Goodman made a name for himself on Roseanne in the late 80′s and early 90′s.

While this arrangement seems to benefit the show and Roseanne more than it would Goodman, he can credit a lot of his success to Roseanne Barr, and their chemistry on the seminal sit-com was pretty great, so it’s hardly charity on his part.

As much as I like to shit on NBC for being awful, let’s chalk this one up to the proverbial broken clock being right twice a day. With Roseanne’s batshit crazy persona these days, the only thing you can really expect from this show is that it will star Roseanne, and it will be nothing at all like Roseanne.

That’s enough to pique my interest.

If, God willing, you’re anything like me, you would sooner gnaw off your own thumbs than subject yourself to the critical darling film The Artist. However, if you’re anything like me, you want everyone to think that you’re better than them, so you want to talk about how much you enjoyed The Artist, and how you appreciate the film on levels that they only experience in their wet dreams.

Good news. You can exercise these sociopathic tendencies fluidly by adhering to this guide. The tips presented here allow you to appear superior to others, with the added benefit of suggesting that you have no regard for their opinions or existence.

- Constantly Pepper Your Discussion With The Phrase “Duality Of Man”

- Only Discuss It In The Context of Other, More Obscure and Pretentious Films You’re Sure No One Has Seen

- When Someone Tries To Make A Point About The Film Smile Incredulously As You Slowly Take Off Your Square Glasses

- Keep The Fact That You Haven’t Seen The Film Because It Looks Really Boring A Total Secret

- Remember That No One Worth Talking To Has Actually Seen The Artist, So You Can Pretty Much Lie And Say It’s About A Dog And His Penguin Friend That Fight Crime

- Recommend The Film With The One Caveat That The Film Is Incredibly “About Itself.” If People Ask What You Mean, Stand There Silently And Try To Stream Blood From Your Eyes

- If People Ask You For Your Thoughts On The Artist, Tell Them To Wait Right There While You Go By A Cashmere Scarf So That You Seem More Artistic When Discussing The Film

- Don’t Refer To The Film As “Standing In The Shadow Of Chipwrecked

- Cite A.O. Scott’s Review, But Don’t Pull A Copy From Your Pocket And Read Directly From It

- Remember That It Isn’t About A Family From Pittsburgh That Takes In A British Butler. That Was The TV Show Mr. Belvedere

- Careful When You Talk About Aspects Of The Artist “Not Being Black And White,” Because The Film Was Shot Just That Way

- Start Off Praising The Performance Of Star Jean Dujardin. Your Audience Will Immediately Tune Out And You Can Pretty Much Say Anything From Then On Out

- You Shouldn’t Really Dwell On The Fact That The Guy That Played Borat’s Producer Is In The Film, And You Certainly Shouldn’t Experience A Visible Erection When Mentioning It

- When You Talk About Geoffrey McNab’s Glowing Review from the Cannes Film Festival, Feel Free To Pronounce It “Can” or “Con.” You’ll Sound Like A Haughty Prick Either Way

- Discuss The Postmodern Aspects Of The Film. It’s Really Hard To Disprove That A Work Of Art Has Postmodern Aspects Because The Wikipedia Entry On Postmodernism Might As Well Be Written In F#cking Greek

- No Matter How Much You Want To Use The Word, Don’t Describe The Production Design Of The Film As “Faggy”

- Take Off Your Tim Tebow Jersey Before Classifying The Film As A “Tepid Copy-Of-A-Copy of Truffaut”

- Don’t Bite Anyone Who Disagrees With Your Analysis Of The Film

- Limit Yourself To Three “Jacking Off” Motions During A Conversation About The Acting Performances

- Limit Yourself To Zero Instances Of Actually Jacking Off When Talking About The Acting Performances, Especially When Specific To John Goodman

It’s that magical time of the year again. A time to sit through sh*tty Christmas special after shitty Christmas special. Instead of filling the heart with holiday cheer, these read more as long toy commercials, blatant cash grabs, or chilling reminders of our own mortality. This is totally redundant. I don’t need any help getting depressed around the holidays. The holidays usually just take care of that themselves. But thanks for the assist, Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Outlined below are seven of the all time worst Christmas specials the networks have ever crammed down our chimneys. And, no, the Star Wars Christmas Special didn’t make the Worst Of list. It took balls to make it, and nerve like that deserves reward.

Shrek the Halls

When America screamed “No more Shrek movies!!,” the studio actually listened. However, nobody said anything about television holiday specials. Hence, Shrek the Halls. And wouldn’t you know it? All of Shrek’s attempts to pull off an awesome holiday fall flat and get screwed up by a wacky cast of fairy tale characters. Poor guy just can’t win.

A Very Brady Christmas

The Brady Family gets back together in one place for the holidays. Unfortunately, we’re invited to watch as well. It’s always awkward to share the holidays with someone else’s family, but even worse when the now grown children are neurotic messes. Jan is headed for divorce, Greg’s wife doesn’t want anything to do with him, Peter is intimidated by his bossy girlfriend and can’t get it up, Marcia married a bum, and Bobby has secretly dropped out of college. That sounds almost as bad as all the stuff that actually happened to the actors who play them.

John Goodman is set to join The Coen Brothers‘ upcoming Inside Llewyn Davis. My dream of seeing him pull a piece on Justin Timberlake could become true!

The film stars Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan (with an offer out to Timberlake). Isaac will play the lead character, Dave van Ronk, a real-life 1960′s folk singer who was friends with Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and other famous musicians. There aren’t many details at this about the role Goodman will play but if history is any indicator, it will be the sweaty, violent guy. Halloween is the season for creepy stop-motion animated children’s movies. And so today we have a new trailer for ParaNorman, from the studio that brought you Coraline. I’m not much of an animation buff but this looks pretty cool, and it also has one of the best titles I’ve seen in a while (I’m a sucker for puns). The trailer doesn’t have much information in the way of plot, but it does have a lot of creepy images and it looks cool. And check out this voice cast: Casey Affleck, John Goodman, Jeff Garlin, Anna Kendrick, Leslie Mann, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Elaine Stritch. I know most of those names!

ParaNorman is scheduled for an August, 2012 release, so expect lots more information to come between now and then. Below you can also see a (kind of bland) poster for the movie. (The Playlist)

After Wednesday’s last minute scrambles and upsets to finalize the playoff slate, it’s a safe statement thatplayers appear on every contender’s lineup, but feared players get all the press. What about the players that no one would fear? Every lineup has its fair share of those as well, but it’s a more curious phenomenon in film, in which any player could be crafted to carry himself as larger-than-life. Despite this fact, many end up being as disappointing as Todd Van Poppel.

Here are seven such Van Poppels.

7. Ed – Ed

Ed is a monkey, which means that, while he lacks the advanced intelligence of a human, it will be hard to get inside his head. I would think that a monkey would have trouble responding to directives such as “intentional walk” and “pitch away.”

Further, not to harp on this bunting thing, but how easy would it be to lay one down the third base line, only to throw a banana down near first. He would predictably go to first, letting the ball roll towards third, but there’s always the chance that the baserunner would step on the banana, angering Ed and causing him to eat the baserunner’s face off.

It’s a trade off.

6. Mae Mordibito – A League of Their Own

Madonna has slept with a lot of baseball players. I’m not positive, but I am CONFIDENT that baseball talent is not sexually transmitted, so I think she would actually need to play baseball to get better at it, rather than just bang-out Jose Canseco or A-Rod.

We know seven things, no more, no less.

The post 7 Things We Know About ‘Community’ Season 3 appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Community, with its low ratings and critical acclaim, is coming back to NBC for season three. In two short years, it’s made a name for itself as one of the most inventive shows on television, utilizing claymation for last year’s Christmas episode and ending both seasons with reference-packed paintball episodes that people are still talking about.

Looking forward to season 3, we don’t know exactly what they’ll do in terms of plot and story, but we know we’ve got a huge song-and-dance number kicking off the first scene of the season premiere, and a roster of guest stars that bring the awesome.

Let’s take a look at seven things we do know about Community’s upcoming season.

7. Jeff Could Resolve Some Daddy Issues

Jeff (Joel McHale) has had some issues with his until-now absent father on the show, but it looks like things between the two will come to a head. As McHale states, “I know that my father will become present in the series.

Although producers would love to see Bill Murray take on the role of Jeff’s father, McHale claims that nothing is set in stone, saying “I know that they would like to get him, that’d be great, but you know I don’t know anything more than that. So, I’m just going to go ahead and say that Jack Nicholson will be playing my father. Well, either Jack Nicholson or Joe Namath, I don’t know.”

Doesn’t matter, they’re pretty much the same guy anyway.

6. Martin Starr Will Be A Poli-Sci Professor

The Party Down and Apatow alum will be joining the Community faculty as a political science professor and, probably more importantly, a model UN advisor. Do they even have model U.N. in college? I thought that was an eighth-grade thing. Anyway, it’s unclear exactly which Martin Starr we’ll be getting. The embittered jerk from Party Down? The quiet weirdo from Knocked Up? Some freaky normal Martin Starr character with which we are not familiar?

Only time will tell.

5. Omar Comin’!

In what we can only pray is a reprisal of his Omar role from The Wire (though unlikely considering how things turned out for him there), Michael K. Williams will also be joining the faculty of Greendale. While he will be playing a teacher, don’t expect him to fit the mold of an academic, as his character will be “an ex-con who teachers the study group’s biology class.”

Awesomesauce.

Much to the chagrin of many viewers, Chaz Bono (formerly Chastity) made his appearance on Dancing With The Stars this week. A firestorm of controversy erupted when the transgender star was announced as a member of this season’s cast with some devoted viewers boycotting the program, and others applauding the casting.

We here at Screen Junkies don’t watch the show because we were naturally blessed with two hype feet and fly off into a rage whenever we hear the voice of Tom Bergeron. Therefore, we don’t really have an opinion on this matter beyond, “What’s the big deal?”

He was a she and now he’s wearing a stylish vest and squaring off against Nancy Grace. There’s no harm in that. Besides, there are several beloved celebrities who resemble Chaz Bono. For instance….

Val Kilmer

He’ll be starring in movies alongside 50 Cent in no time.

John Goodman

Mostly it’s the shirt. Chaz should hold on to that in case he wants to be Dan Tanner for Halloween.

Kevin Smith

There’s no way they’d be able to sit next to one another on the same flight.

The hit parade of Greendale profs for the 2011-2012 school year just keeps cranking ‘em out, with news today that Martin Starr will be joining the esteemed faculty of Community. Mr. Starr will be playing a poli-sci professor and model U.N. adviser for one episode, though Starr left the door open for a reprisal of his role later on this season. Starr will join Michael Kenneth Williams and John Goodman as guest scholars this season.

Starr has built up quite a following through his stints of brilliant-but-cancelled shows such as Party Down and Freaks and Geeks. He’s hitched his star to a new wagon with his appearances on Adult Swim‘s NTSF: SD: SUV, but with episodes clocking in at a scant 15 minutes (with a huge cast), he’s got plenty of capacity to bring his brand of smug impatience to other programs in need.

If this Community Model U.N. episode is anything like the Simpsons one, everyone’s gonna end up shipwrecked on an island with Abed on trial for stealing food. And I have no problem with that. (TV Line)

From there we see the gonzo practices of Michael Parks’ church and then a full-on standoff between the church and John Goodman: FBI.

It’s Smith’s first foray into horror (besides working with J. Lo) and immediately comes off as stirring as the work of Rob Zombie. Judging from the trailer, the film boasts more than a few tense, white knuckle moments. I wonder how Jay and Silent Bob are going to save the day this time.

As if life wasn’t hard enough for the gang in Community, they’ve got yet another adversary on their hands. Joining the ranks of Starburns and Paintball Sawyer is Vice Dean Laybourne, to be played by John Goodman. Not bad news at all. The Vice Dean will be the head of the Greendale’s prestigious Air Conditioner Repair School.

This should be a nice change of pace for Goodman, who’s been appearing in the uber-serious Damages as the head of a civil defense firm. This should be…lighter. His six-episode arc begins with the season premiere on September 22nd.

In line with expectations, season 3 for Community has already demonstrated some inspired casting, with the Goodman news coming on the heels of word that Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire’s Omar) will be stepping into the show as a very intense professor. Game on.

John Goodman will portray a real life make-up artist that rescued six hostages from Iran. I don’t think he’ll be able to draw on his experience playing Babe Ruth for this one.

No one said that rescuing hostages was going to be easy, but no one said that it had to be this complex either. Ben Affleck’s Argo is based on the 1979 hostage rescue mission in Iran. The government claimed the diplomat taken hostage were actually a film crew scouting locations for a film called Argo. And that’s the story of the ACTUAL film  called Argo. It’s possible that Affleck‘s film could also be a ruse, but contemplating that makes my head hurt, so we’ll ignore that possibility.

In order to get their hostages back, they needed some legitimacy, so they hired real-life make-up artist John Chambers (Goodman) to sell the whole affair to the Iranian powers that be.

Goodman joins Alan Arkin in the film, which requires the cast to live together in squalor for two weeks to get their heads right for their roles. Take that, rich, famous actors! (Variety)

Pixar is going to do a college movie. Alright, where do I enroll?

At CinemaCon, the true animation domination-ers at Pixar officially announced the Monsters Inc. sequel will be called Monster University. Monsters Inc. is my favorite Pixar movie, so I’m excited that we’ll get another outing with our favorite scream team, even in I am wary of Pixar sequels. Are you excited about Cars 2? Cause it can drive itself into a river for all I care.

The story is supposedly about how Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) began as college rivals at the University of Fear. Both actors are coming back, because besides sopping up our nostalgia for his Oscar hosting days, what else is Billy Crystal up to? The film has a release date scheduled for November 2nd, 2012.

One thing that intrigues me is that the “college movie” genre is typically very loosely structured and gag based, which is very different from Pixar’s tightly crafted narratives and character arcs. My first guess is that this will probably not feel like a G-rated Animal House, Old School or Revenge of the Nerds. Then again, maybe the Pixar crew wants to cut loose and down a keg? Either way, I will pledge Pixar House. (Collider)

What’s more frightening than Kevin Smith‘s upcoming horror movie Red State? His mediocre attempts at self-deprecating humor. Remember when he complained about being too fat for that airplane, you guys? Cause I forgot all about it a long time ago.

However, I’m gonna cut the director some slack, cause he’s probably out of breath from (lightly) exercising, getting in shape to run around the country and plug his new movie into any theater that’ll screen it. Not-so-Silent Bob’s intro notwithstanding, the teaser itself is very tense and effective. You can see a few bits of John Goodman the way he looks in my “Roseanne” nightmares – stern and viewed through a shaky lens. The film also stars Kevin Pollack and Stephen Root.

The Red State tour starts March 5th. (Cinema Blend, Coopersdell.com)

I love Kevin Smith movies. His point of view on the world makes me feel like someone really gets it, in comedy, with social commentary or drama. Red State would be a great film if anyone had made it but it’s no surprise to me that it came from Kevin Smith.

Red State is fast-paced, sets up the premise and themes, then just gets going. Travis (Michael Angarano) drives past a protest at a funeral for a gay suicide. That sets the stage for religious homophobia, and he arrives late for a classroom discussion about the first amendment. That lays out all the exposition and establishes Jared (Kyle Gallner) and Billy Ray (Nicholas Braun) as Travis’s buddies.

Abin Cooper (Michael Parks) leads the church protests, and he’s so extreme even admitted Nazis condemn him. Actually, Travis, Jared and Billy Ray are kind of homophobic too. They call each other gay slurs and Billy Ray really worries about the mechanics of the four-way they plan to have with an internet date. A familiar Kevin Smith subject now illustrates how homophobia exists in many stages, not always evil but still wrong. A sheriff (Stephen Root) has secret gay trysts while he’s married, because some people are so scared they can’t even come out.

Well, you know this isn’t the story of a four-way orgy, so the boys end up trapped by Cooper, who thinks they’re gay. The extended sermon by Cooper, basically a cult ceremony, slowly adds disturbing elements to stretch our tension. You can see the hate on the faces of the parishioners even without speaking. That articulate Kevin Smith dialogue is frightening in Cooper. Smith knows the opponents of tolerance well enough to expose them. I would ask though, where do a bunch of gay bashing preachers get a ball gag?

The intensity is brutal, like relentless horror movies where even the survivors, if there are any, still go through hell. The teens really act like scared kids. Billy Ray wants his mom. It’s an intellectual Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where hate is the murde weapon. And guns, but it’s the conviction of Cooper’s tribe that kills. The cameras shake but it’s more akin to guerilla horror, and Smith still keeps everyone in frame and in focus.

Halfway in, Red State turns into an action movie and a relevant, scary one. ATF Agent Joseph Keenan (John Goodman) leads the charge against the Cooper compound. This speaks to how the law deals with groups like Cooper’s and how such groups maintain themselves. It’s an impossible circumstance. You can’t root for the ATF because there are little kids in Cooper’s church. The film switches focus between the teens, the law and the church to disorient the audience. It really flows.

I agree with the point Smith is making. I think this is how dangerous hate can get if circumstances are allowed to escalate. Two agents at the end of the film talk blatantly like Smith himself talks. It’s uncharacteristic of the rest of the film but perhaps that’s the director’s own voice coming through.

We’ve been hearing a lot about the upcoming adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. In case you don’t know, here’s a quick plot synopsis:

“The plot focuses on Oskar Schell, a nine-year-old boy from Manhattan whose father died on 9/11. Two years later, the boy discovers a key belonging to his father, which sends him on a search through the city.”

The article doesn’t say what parts the new cast additions Jeffrey Wright and Viola Davis are going to be playing, but they’re joining Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, and John Goodman along with child actor Thomas Horn.

I haven’t read the book yet, but my impression is it’s a bit of a weeper, so we’ll probably be seeing lots of Oscar buzz for this, especially considering the involvement of screenwriter Eric Roth, he of Forrest Gump and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Plus if “the 9/11 movie” doesn’t at least get a Best Picture nomination, don’t the terrorists win, or something? (via The Playlist)

Everything’s coming up John Goodman. His stint as a professor who loves the crap out of New Orleans on”Treme,” has served as a springboard to make us all go, “Oh yeah. John Goodman.”

Now, he’s racked up roles in Red State, The Artist, Thicker, and as of today, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. He’ll join Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks, and whiz kid Thomas Horn in the story about a boy who pieces together a mystery about his father after losing him on 9/11. Goodman will play the doorman to the boy’s building who plays a crucial role in the boy’s story. Apparently the kid can’t open heavy doors. (THR)
