For his next trick, visual effects guru John Dykstra will transform himself into a director. Best known for his groundbreaking work on Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Dykstra has also worked on many big action films including Spider-Man, Hancock, and X-Men: First Class. He’s next slated to direct Super Zero, which is an adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s Tales From The Farm graphic novel.

The live-action film will center around a ten-year old who withdraws into an imaginary world of super heroes and space invaders after his mother dies from cancer. Meanwhile, his uncle and a friend try to bring him back to reality. Dykstra says of the project:

“I’ve been so involved in films that are primarily based on the action sequences and over-the-top visuals that this to me was incredibly attractive just based on the depth of the characters and the evocative nature of the story.”

Dykstra’s contributions to film have no doubt changed the visual landscape of what we watch today. Let’s hope he’s got a few more tricks up his sleeve for this concept as well as a deftness with drawing the emotional performances needed from his young star. I’m not certain whether or not he received this training on his previous directing effort, the video game Sewer Shark. (Variety)
