The television event of the spring is upon us. As you’ll learn by watching this epic trailer for Community, everyone’s favorite show that nobody watches returns to NBC on March 15th. It‘s good to see the Greendale gang again. Let’s all please remember to watch. Keep little reminders by tying strings around our fingers, turn your television to NBC and then break the channel buttons, or just log onto the Internet between now and the 15th. I’m sure there’ll be some mention of it.

The post Where Will The Stars Go After ‘Community’ Is Canceled? appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
We’re not sure how to react to Community’s return to NBC‘s schedule. At least it hasn’t been canceled but how much longer will it be on the air? Does the network believe in the show, or are they simply trying to burn off the remaining episodes before cutting the comedy series far too short? We’ve been hurt before and we always get nervous with the handling of our favorite programs. We need to know that Community isn’t going to go out for a gallon of milk and never return. It’s just so hard to trust.

Should the show very-probably-be-canceled, what will happen to the very talented cast? You’d think that casting agents are biding their time before descending upon roster of superstars-in-waiting. Below is a list of where they are likely to end up next.

Joel McHale

With a growing range of supporting roles, Joel McHale‘s film resume is blossoming. Should NBC decide to cancel Community, it’s likely he’ll try to parlay into a full-time movie career. Of course, it makes sense that he would gravitate toward comedy. There’s always a need for good-looking, sarcastic protagonists and Paul Rudd can’t play them all. That’s where Joel McHale could flourish. Let’s see what type of project would be right for him. Perhaps he could play a womanizer guy who learns to respect women when a judge orders him to coach an all female peewee soccer team.

Gillian Jacobs

With potentially scene-stealing roles in several upcoming comedies, Gillian Jacobs is steadily building her fanbase. It’s hard to say where we’ll see her career end up. Right now I’m predicting either Owen Wilson‘s love interest in a movie about a surfer who takes over his dad’s hotel, or as the lead in an indie film about a quirky woman looking for love after the end of a long-term relationship.

We know seven things, no more, no less.

Community, with its low ratings and critical acclaim, is coming back to NBC for season three. In two short years, it’s made a name for itself as one of the most inventive shows on television, utilizing claymation for last year’s Christmas episode and ending both seasons with reference-packed paintball episodes that people are still talking about.

Looking forward to season 3, we don’t know exactly what they’ll do in terms of plot and story, but we know we’ve got a huge song-and-dance number kicking off the first scene of the season premiere, and a roster of guest stars that bring the awesome.

Let’s take a look at seven things we do know about Community’s upcoming season.

7. Jeff Could Resolve Some Daddy Issues

Jeff (Joel McHale) has had some issues with his until-now absent father on the show, but it looks like things between the two will come to a head. As McHale states, “I know that my father will become present in the series.

Although producers would love to see Bill Murray take on the role of Jeff’s father, McHale claims that nothing is set in stone, saying “I know that they would like to get him, that’d be great, but you know I don’t know anything more than that. So, I’m just going to go ahead and say that Jack Nicholson will be playing my father. Well, either Jack Nicholson or Joe Namath, I don’t know.”

Doesn’t matter, they’re pretty much the same guy anyway.

6. Martin Starr Will Be A Poli-Sci Professor

The Party Down and Apatow alum will be joining the Community faculty as a political science professor and, probably more importantly, a model UN advisor. Do they even have model U.N. in college? I thought that was an eighth-grade thing. Anyway, it’s unclear exactly which Martin Starr we’ll be getting. The embittered jerk from Party Down? The quiet weirdo from Knocked Up? Some freaky normal Martin Starr character with which we are not familiar?

Only time will tell.

5. Omar Comin’!

In what we can only pray is a reprisal of his Omar role from The Wire (though unlikely considering how things turned out for him there), Michael K. Williams will also be joining the faculty of Greendale. While he will be playing a teacher, don’t expect him to fit the mold of an academic, as his character will be “an ex-con who teachers the study group’s biology class.”

Awesomesauce.

When Community was shut out of this year’s Emmy nominations, fans were left to wonder how such a groundbreaking, intelligent series could be completely ignored by the voters. At a time when the critically-acclaimed but low-rated show is still struggling to find a larger audience, an acknowledgment could have gone a long way toward securing its uncertain future. Instead, a series with arguably the best comedy writing on television and an ensemble cast that’s second to none was met with silence. This lack of even a single nom seemed like a slap in the face not only to the cast and crew, but to anyone who prefers their shows without a laugh track.

But when I spoke to Dan Harmon and the cast at Comic-Con, the snub didn’t seem to matter. In fact, Harmon claimed some cast members were perversely pleased by the lack of recognition, including comedy legend Chevy Chase.

“It was just a big ‘I told you so,’ Harmon said. “(Chase) called me and said I told you so. He liked it that we didn’t get a nomination.”

“Frankly it didn’t bother me,” Chase added. “I have a lot of Emmys.”

For cast member Yvette Nicole Brown, the lack of a nomination didn’t come across as a snub, but rather a testament to the quality of Community’s competition.

“There’s a lot of shows on the air that are funny,” Brown said. “It’s almost, like…who would you take off the list. It becomes snarky, then.”

“I can take two off,” joked costar Joel McHale, before adding he felt it was the writing team that deserved the most recognition.

“I don’t want to sound more arrogant than normal, but the writing nomination, I thought that would have been great. But we’re not doing this for awards, or anything. I’m thrilled we’re coming back for a third season.”

That sentiment was echoed by producer Anthony Russo, who along with his brother Joe, worked on the highly revered sitcom, Arrested Development.

“The good news is we’re on the air for another season, we’re all able to keep doing what we’re doing, and we’re having great fun and we’ll see what happens this season.”

According to Dan Harmon, viewers can expect a darker tone from season three, which will include that addition of The Wire’s Michael K. Williams. Not many sitcoms would cast an actor best known for playing a shotgun wielding homosexual who makes a living robbing drug dealers. But according to actor Ken Jeong, the chance to work in such a creative, unpredictable environment is its own reward.

“When you’re part of what I honestly consider to be the funniest sitcom right now on television, whether we have nominations or not, we go hom knowing we do good work.”

Added costar Danny Pudi, “As long as we get to laugh at the end of the day and be challenged with crazy, funny, and smart material, I don’t know if we could ask for anything else.”

Michael Bay may be pushing 3D filmmaking to the next level, but Robert Rodriguez is going even further. While most filmmakers are concerned about delivering the best visual and audio experience to audiences, Rodriguez wants to make sure you smell his work as it was originally conceived.

That’s right. Spy Kids 4D will finally teach the world what Joel McHale actually smells like. Using Aromascope technology, viewers will be given a card with eight distinct smells on it. They will then be prompted at key moments in the story to run their finger across certain segments of the card and then smell it. This is great news for me. I’m sick and tired of getting dirty looks for smelling my finger when I take a date to the movies.

If you’re stoked about Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, chances are there is an adult reading this article to you right now. However, morbid curiosity might compel non-children to wonder why Joel McHale is taking such a detour from a promising career path to act in the fourth installment of a kid’s movie franchise. While McHale is the most surprising participant, the film also boasts a few more actors that might leave their fans scratching their heads.

We get Jeremy Piven as the bad guy here, though I don’t think nearly as many will be surprised to find him slumming it in this type of film. We’ve also got Ricky Gervais and Robert Rodriguez fixtures Danny Trejo and Antonio Banderas in the mix. Granted, this is the first Spy Kids film in eight years, so there might be some killer script that has A-listers clamoring to get involved, but, based on the trailer, that’s not the case. The most likely explanation is a Bowfinger-type scenario where Rodriguez got all the stars to act unwittingly, then tossed them in front of a green screen. The technology‘s there, people.

At the now infamous “Golden Globes,” host Ricky Gervais took a shot at Tim Allen. Well, it looks like Gervais has gone 180 degrees, accepting a role that Allen would have absolutely been down for. Way to keep us all on our toes, Mr. Brent.

Gervais will voice robotic dog Argonaut in this summer’s Spy Kids: All The Time In The World. It’s probably a day’s worth of work for a ton of money, and at least his face won’t be exposed to the camera like co-stars Jessica Alba and Joel McHale. If anyone asks, “were you the dog in Spy Kids 4,” Gervais can just tell them “that was Steve Coogan.” If the person responds, “it didn’t sound anything like Steve Coogan, more like you,” Gervais can awkwardly walk away without addressing him further.

Here’s what Gervais actually said about the role:

“Not only am I lending my voice to Spy Kids but they can keep it,” said Gervais. “I’m sick of it.”

Self-deprecatalicious. The film robo-barks its way into theaters August 19th. Meanwhile, on May 19th you can catch Gervais in the season finale of “The Office” on NBC. (Hollywood Reporter)

You asked for more Spy Kids movies, and you’re getting more Spy Kids movies. Wait, you say you didn’t ask for more Spy Kids movies? Well, it’s too late now. Director Robert Rodriguez is getting ready to unveil a new one August 19th. You should have objected awhile ago. They’re currently releasing stills for the movie, like the one of Jessica Alba and a baby below. Oh man, I wish that baby would get out of the shot. And Jessica Alba‘s clothes. They’re spoiling an otherwise nice-to-look-at thing.

Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World stars Alba, Joel McHale and Jeremy Piven, all of whom are collecting nice paychecks, I’m sure. Here’s a synopsis:

On the surface, Marissa Cortez Wilson (Jessica Alba) has it all…married to a famous spy hunting television reporter, a new baby and intelligent twin step kids. But in reality, trying to mother Rebecca (Rowan Blanchard) and Cecil (Mason Cook), who clearly don’t want her around, is her toughest challenge yet. Also, her husband, Wilbur (Joel McHale), wouldn’t know a spy if he lived with one which is exactly the case – Marissa’s a retired secret agent.

These problems are very relatable to me, a single mom, but with a layer of fantasy my kids will enjoy I am intrigued.

Marissa’s world is turned upside down when the maniacal Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) threatens to take over the planet and she’s called back into action by the head of OSS, home of the greatest spies and where the now-defunct Spy Kids division was created. With Armageddon quickly approaching, Rebecca and Cecil are thrust into action when they learn their boring stepmom was once a top agent and now the world’s most competitive ten year olds are forced to put their bickering aside and rely on their wits. With a little help from a couple of very familiar Spy Kids, Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara), and some mind-blowing gadgets, they just may be able to save the world and possibly bring their family together while they’re at it.

Oh good. For a minute there, I was worried the old Spy Kids were completely out of the picture. Glad there’s some continuity there, but that brings us to the main question: will Sharkboy and Lavagirl make an appearance? I’m gonna hold my breath until I find out. Or, y’know… I won’t do that. Joel McHale is getting ready to host the Independent Spirit Awards this weekend, the day before the Oscars. He’s been burning through the 90 screeners he was given when he got the gig, and he shared some of his biased favorites with the press this week.

“I loved Exit Through the Gift Shop and I loved Restrepo,” McHale said. “After seeing Restrepo, I was like ‘Why wasn’t this bigger?’ Gosh, that documentary was crazy. I mean it was amazing! That was surprising, just that they got some of the footage that they got in such a crazy place where those soldiers are still. I guess I was surprised by Black Swan, without letting too many spoilers out. Before seeing it, I was just like oh, it’s kind of a chick movie but after watching it I just loved it. I was enthralled by it and I was not expecting it to be so dark. It was great. Natalie Portman’s performance is incredible.”

“Community” fans are still waiting to learn about Jeff Winger’s daddy issues. They came out the other week when Pierce faked an appearance by Mr. Winger, but Jeff seemed back to his normal self for class elections last night. He suspects it will be a while before we meet Jeff’s dad.

“I have not read the last two scripts so I don’t know if they would do that yet but I’m sure in Dan Harmon, who is a living genius, he has all those things bubble in his head and they come out at different times. There’s numerous characters so that sort of thing comes and goes. It ebbs and flows. You can only deal with it for so much of the episodes, so I don’t know. My guess is it’ll come back next year somehow. I’m hoping my father will be played by… oh, that’s a good question. I’m going to go with Matt Damon. I don’t know. That episode was by far the most you’d seen Jeff reveal about his family and he said some stuff about his mom along the way but yeah, that was kind of crazy. And you could see how much of a hot button it was as he tried to kill Pierce.”

The Independent Spirit Awards are Saturday. “Community” airs Thursdays on NBC.

Seth McFarlane’s upcoming comedy Ted appears to be adding ringers to its cast by the day. Today it happens to be the so-hot-right-now star of Community and “The Soup” Joel McHale. That pretty impressive cast, in case you haven’t been keeping up, includes Mark Wahlberg as the main character, whose teddy bear comes to life thanks to a childhood wish, while Mila Kunis is playing a female character of some kind, presumably “the girl” of the story. As for McHale:

“McHale will be Kunis’ sleazy boss who continually hits on her even though she has a boyfriend (Wahlberg).”

Hey, I was right! She is playing “the girl.” Add another tally to the “Called It” board. (via The Playlist)

Dani Pudi plays the character on “Community” who provides most of the show’s self-referential meta humor. So it makes sense that Abed is responsible for a stop-motion animated episode in the tradition of the Rankin Bass specials.

“The episode is ‘Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas,’” Pudi said in a conference call with the media. “The episode starts off like a typical community episode. Cold open, we’re in the cafeteria, Dean Pelton is over the speaker. The only difference is it’s stop motion. Abed notices and he thinks it’s a very special Christmas because we’ve gone to a new medium, stop motion. Abed believes the only reason he’s in stop motion is to find the meaning of Christmas. They go on a journey with the aid of Professor Duncan who believes he needs to help figure out what’s in Abed’s mind. He even says at one time, ‘What emotional crisis did you have to have this delusion?’ Abed says it’s not a delusion. We have a magical journey including through Gumdrop Road which is a place I’ve always wanted to go.”

Like all holiday classics, Abed and the “Community” gang learn something by the end. “It starts in this place where something has triggered this new perspective from Abed because every year he has a special thing with his family on Christmas but something’s a little different this year. Through it all, with the study group’s help, of course at the end we all come together and discover the meaning of Christmas individually and as a group. There are moments of absurdity but it’s grounded in logic and reality. It goes to these places where with stop motion I think we’re able to go a little further with the emotional depth and sadness of some of the characters. I think it will rival ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’ for our generation.”

“Community” already got deep this year with an episode on religion, where Abed becomes a messiah to Greendale. “Uncontrollable Christmas” is profound in a more secular way.

“I think that one was a little bit more about the life of Jesus and the bible. It was a little bit more Christianity based and I think there was a little bit more about religion in that one. The last Christmas episode we talked about different religions, and we talk a little bit, but in this one it’s not as much about religious differences as it is about our characters and the meaning of Christmas for all of us. We even talk about ‘seasons greetings’ vs. ‘merry Christmas.’ There is a little bit more of Abed’s journey to figuring out the meaning of Chrsitmas and the study group coming together at the end. I would say definitely less religious but still very full of meaning, not only Christmas. Abed needs to figure out the meaning of Christmas. The study group comes together on a mini mission in one day, probably in one hour. It’s more focused, also because a lot of it’s coming from one character’s point of view. It’s less about the meta and more about crap, how do we get out of here?’”

Pudi hasn’t seen the finished animation yet, but he did get to visit the studio where eight animators were manipulated his stop motion likeness. “It’s very bizarre because you’re looking at a version of yourself. In my case, it’s definitely an enhanced and better looking version. The eyebrows are fuller, the forehead is smaller. I think I’m more handsome. I’ve got a nicer jaw line. I have actually the same sized legs which I don’t know if that’s a good thing, but it’s very weird and bizarre. It’s just really fun. The first time I met one of the animators, I saw her away from set and she was like, ‘I recognize you because I’ve been working on your doll.’ That’s definitely another first. That’s the first time someone’s recognized me from a doll they made of me.”

Puppetry plays a role in this week’s episode too. Going out to celebrate Troy’s 21st birthday, Abed gets into a “Farscape” debate. “I do have a conversation with someone regarding ‘Farscape’ and the differences between season one and season three. I think Abed is very excited to discuss ‘Farscape’ with someone because there’s not many people in Abed’s life that he can. Tomorrow night’s episode is a really sweet episode, Troy’s 21st birthday party, so the gang goes to celebrate his 21st birthday party. I don’t think we’ve done that very often where you see our group interacting with people outside of Greendale while we’re still together. That’s always interesting, how would Abed and Troy interact with a regular customer at a bar. How would an outsider perceive this group of knuckleheads. That’s another episode where Abed learns a lesson. A lot of people learn a lesson. I think ‘Farscape’ is just the means to the end.”

For research, Pudi put on a few “Farscape” episodes. “It freaked me out right away with some of the aliens. They’re very alien looking with human qualities but there is a fantasy element I like because as a kid I thought okay, if it is possible for me to make out with an alien woman, that would be an exciting thing. Watching ‘Farscape’ definitely rekindled some of those memories I am human though. I just want everybody to be clear of that, and married so don’t tell my wife.”

That takes “Community” through the end of 2010. Pudi’s already at work on next year’s batch. “We just did an episode where we get to put on a drug play. Anti-drug play, let’s be clear about that. Every script I get I’m just really, really excited to see what’s next and where we’re going. I feel like I’m turning back into a 5 – 10-year-old. The fact I get to do that as an adult with a bank account makes me really excited. My mom can’t get mad at me. When you get to play in a blanket fort, put on an anti-drug play… these are things an adult can’t get away with, or at least you’d be monitoring his behavior.”

“Community” airs Thursdays at 8/7c on NBC.

‘Community’ Halloween Episode Preview http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/community-halloween-episode-preview/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/community-halloween-episode-preview/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 This morning I have for you a preview of the upcoming Halloween episode of "Community." Zombies have taken over Greendale. The producers have also managed to make all the characters' costumes funny again, as well as indicative of their unique personalities. Jeff is so vain that he always goes as something effortlessly attractive. This year he's David Beckham. Brilliant. And wait until you see Senor Chang. "Community" is without a doubt one of the best shows on television, and it's perplexing to me that no one watches it. You and I might watch it, but everyone else is tuning into "The Big Bang Theory" and not DVRing the little college sitcom on NBC at the same time. Some affiliates across the country are even dropping it from their lineup due to the fact that no one in their city gives a crap. That is not a good sign, folks. Once affiliates start dropping programs it's not long before it gets yanked from the schedule altogether. Let's watch this Halloween episode and save this show from going the way of "Arrested Development." Check out the preview after the jump...

‘Community’ Christmas Episode Pulls a ‘Rudolph’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/community-christmas-episode-pulls-a-rudolph/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/community-christmas-episode-pulls-a-rudolph/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 "Community" creator Dan Harmon's Christmas wish just came true. No, not a third season, stupid. He gets to live his dream of creating an entirely animated episode of his sitcom. This season's Christmas episode of "Community" will be created in the pain-staking stop motion style of the Rankin/Bass animated specials we all grew up on. Harmon recounts how this opportunity presented itself. “It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do but, I never anticipated having the ability to do it,” he admits. But “Jeff Gaspin at NBC woke up one morning and thought "Community" should do an animated episode. I was like, ‘Well, that’s weird, because that’s the kind of stuff I’m usually suggesting and guys like him veto.’” Sounds awesome. Early buzz already has this (and the Halloween episode) topping last season's Paintball Episode. Sure, it will strain a few animators' eyes and backs, but I feel like it's worth it. Dibs on the Gillian Jacobs doll! (EW)

Joel McHale Will Share Maritals With Jessica Alba In ‘Spy Kids 4′ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/joel-mchale-will-share-maritals-with-jessica-alba-in-spy-kids-4/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/joel-mchale-will-share-maritals-with-jessica-alba-in-spy-kids-4/#comments Wed, 08 Sep 2010 16:58:09 +0000 Defy Media Joel McHale is in final talks to star opposite Jessica Alba in Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids 4. In the sequel, Alba would play a retired spy married to McHale, a spy-hunting reporter. When a nefarious villain returns on the scene, Alba is pulled back into the business. And she takes her stepkids along for the ride. No word yet on the youngsters that will carry the picture, but if I were the little boy I'd get a jump on the spying by placing webcams in Alba's dressing room. I work method. (Variety)
