A couple years ago, there was a torrent of Peter Pan films coming our way, almost all of which seemed to hang their hat on the “gritty reboot” concept. Today, we haven’t heard much about these films, which means the films managed to scare one another off, or they just realized that Robin Williams was a great Peter Pan and can never be improved upon.

Nonetheless, one Peter Pan origin story remains, and has announced that it’s casting Javier Bardem as Blackbeard, the pirate. The film will be directed by Joe Wright, and allegedly stay close to the source material, as Captain Hook served under the command of Blackbeard.

The film is supposed to be in Batman Begins vein, which is just a convoluted way of saying that it makes a ton of money.

Of course they do.

To coincide with the release of Joe Wright‘s little-blonde-girl-assassin movie Hanna (in theaters now), Vulture put together a montage of disturbing child murderers! It’s actually kind of hypnotic to watch, strangely enough. You’d think it’d make ovaries shrivel up and sperm start swimming the other way, but I don’t know, it’s kind of making me want to raise a little rugrat of my own. A little ball of joy to coddle and teach to ride a bike, and how to hold an icepick. It’s all in the angle, you see. You raise that thing high enough above your head, and you’ve got a deadl weapon! Any lower and you’re just going to maim. This heartwarming montage contains clips from Children Of The Corn all the way to Orphan. And if you’re going to complain that Orphan isn’t a good example, you’re even more of a nerd than me, AND you just helped spoil the ending of a terrible movie. (Vulture)

Joe Wright is getting all literary on our asses with his upcoming Anna Karenina adaptation, and he’s hired or is hoping to hire all of the actors you’d expect him to for a literary adaptation. Last we heard, Keira Knightley was his top pick, with Jude Law and Aaron Johnson also up for parts. They are all in with the addition of a few others.

“Keira’s confirmed, Jude Law’s confirmed, Aaron Johnson’s confirmed, Kelly Macdonald’s confirmed, Benedict Cumberbatch is confirmed. I’m still waiting on Saoirse and James,” Wright told The Playlist.

Of course, Saoirse and James refers to Seahorse Rainman Saoirse Ronan and James McAvoy. The Wright alums are up for unspecified roles, but it has been revealed that Keira Knightley will play the title role, Jude Law will chill as her drip of a husband, and Aaron Johnson will play the young soldier who she allows to crawl on top of her while naked. When the book was first released, their affair was deemed very illicit by Russian society. So let’s assume things will get pretty kinky. We’re talking Dirty Sanchezes, Glass Bottom Boats, and the potentially-fatal “Cumberbatch.”

Good life.

Remember the kid from Kickass? No, not the little girl, though she was pretty holy-shit awesome. I’m actually referring to Kickass himself, Aaron Johnson. He’s been getting a lot of offers since he posted that page on MySpace about how he’ll come to the set of your movie and star in it. Here are the takers:

Oliver Stone wants Johnson to play one of the two leads in the drama Savages, about two pot growers whose sexy communal girlfriend (nice?) gets kidnapped by Mexican mobsters. The drug cartel wants the dudes to work for them, or the girl goes… up in smoke. “Muahaha.” Stone is directing, Shane Salerno (Armageddon) and novel author Don Winslow wrote the script, and they’re looking to shoot this June.

Meanwhile, Keira Knightley beckons Johnson, just like she does for me in my dreams. Johnson’s been offered the lead opposite Knightley in Anna Karenina, writer Tom Stoppard‘s adaptation of the Tolstoy classic novel I might have read in a literature class at some point. The film will be directed by Joe Wright (Atonement). One of the best modern writers adapting a novel considered to be one of the best of all time? Hmm… pass. (Deadline)

Joe Wright To Edge In On CliffsNotes Business By Adapting ‘Anna Karenina’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/joe-wright-to-edge-in-on-cliffsnotes-business-by-adapting-anna-karenina/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/joe-wright-to-edge-in-on-cliffsnotes-business-by-adapting-anna-karenina/#comments Tue, 01 Mar 2011 23:03:34 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=30994 Joe Wright wants to follow up the action-packed 'Hanna' with another slow and plodding period piece. Joe Wright’s ass-kicking Hanna is headed to theaters next month, so he’s looking to line up his next film. How does one follow up a tense and moody action flick? By returning to slow, plodding period pieces, of course. Dammit.

Wright’s hoping to get Anna Karenina up and running with go-to Oscar baiter, Tom Stoppard, whittling down the narrative. “You can [make a 2 hour movie] if you’ve got Tom Stoppard writing. He’s done an amazing script which involves Levin’s story as well as Anna’s story. Yeah, Tom Stoppard is just..also, he’s so immersed in Russian history and culture and identity or lack of it.”

He doesn’t come out right out and say it but he implies that Keira Knightley is his top choice to star. “Not sure yet. It’s fairly obvious, but I can’t quite say. She hasn’t signed on the line yet. I’m loyal to my actors.”

I appreciate any director who doesn’t string us along with endless casting shortlists. However, should Knightley not sign on, I’m fully prepared to Photoshop a picture of Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, and Mia Wasikowska all leg-wrestling for the role. Actually I may just go ahead and do that anyway for my own usage. (via The Playlist)

Okay, we haven’t covered a lot of Joe Wright movies before. Pride and Prejudice and Atonement aren’t exactly Screen Junkies types of films. His next movie is on our radar though. Hanna stars Saoirse Ronan as a teenager trained in survival and assassination. Even that outrageous premise sounds familiar these days, but Wright’s take is more arthouse. Hanna’s daring escapes and fights play with what you actually see in the editing.

“One of the reasons why I was excited to make the film was the formal challenge of shooting action,” Wright said at a reception for the film. “I think action is like pure cinema because it can’t be replicated in any other medium. With drama, you can put people on a stage. With photography, you can put it in a gallery. With action, it really only works in cinema and that’s because of montage. So I really enjoyed playing with the ellipses and the magic of Hanna’s action. It’s as much about what you don’t see as it is about what you do see.”

Hanna won’t look like the glossy Jerry Bruckheimer action movies, or even the gritty Bourne style that’s become all the rage. Wright is friends with Paul Greengrass and admires his game changer for the genre, but he looked to more obscure sources.

“I wanted to avoid the normal clichés of action stuff, so I looked at Robert Bresson’s film Pickpocket. I think his economy of action, the whole train station sequence, is extraordinary. Also Alwin Kuchler, my wonderful DoP, showed me Boy Meets Girl, his kind of very expressionistic action sequences, long running in those movies and I really enjoyed the idea of playing with the reality of what we were doing. When she’s running in the strobe lights for instance where she’s running on a running machine. She’s not actually moving at all. The lights and the camera created the movement and she’s actually staying completely still.”

The music of Hanna gives the film a unique voice too. Longtime friends with The Chemica Brothers, Wright hired them to do the score. “Before filming, I asked them to compose a couple of tracks. I told them that I wanted a kind of fucked up fairy tale theme that could be kind of whistled by the baddies throughout the movie later on. I kind of gave them cues and gave them bits of ideas. So once we had those tracks, we would play them while we were filming on a big sound system, or I’d just play their albums to give a rhythm. My editor, Paul Tothill who’s wonderful with music, so during post production, I send them a rough cut of the scene, they send me a track, I recut their track, send it back to them so there’s a constant kind of dialogue going on between us.”

Hanna hits theaters April 8.

This tense clip from Joe Wright‘s Hanna shows us what happens when Seahorse Regimine Saoirse Ronan and Cate Blanchett‘s decoy agent (worst job ever) decide to hug it out while Blanchett watches helplessly in her standard issue Agent Scully costume. If  the rest of the film stands up to this scene, we’re in for a treat. And if it does well enough, maybe we’ll see a Hanna Vs. Hit Girl spin-off. (Guardian)

Someone put a leash on Saoirse Ronan. In this new trailer for Joe Wright‘s Hannah, she attempts to claw Eric Bana’s face off, and successfully kills Cate Blanchett’s stand-in. If Blanchett did stunts herself we would have lost a treasured thespian. Child actors, man. Animals.

In the film, Ronan plays a Swedish teenage assassin who was trained by her father, an ex-CIA spook. He sends her out on a mission, shit gets real, she bolts, and agents dispatched by ruthless operative Blanchett give chase. You mess with Blanchett’s stand-in, you mess with Blanchett herself. Or someone playing her.
