Last season, Dexter ended with the second most shocking cliffhanger in the show’s history. It didn’t quite punch you in the gut like the Trinity Killer finale did, but it’s far more riveting than the time Angel seemingly ran out of toilet paper (he just ended up using his undershirt).

At long last, the new season is here and you can watch as Dexter‘s world changes forever.

Featuring the Deftones.

In the past few seasons, Dexter has lost the quality level that defined it and made the early years so much fun to watch. But there’s hope yet for season seven. For one, the plot is likely to be more interesting because SPOILER we’ll see how Dexter reacts now that Deb is on to him and his secret life. Secondly, they used the Deftones in the trailer. That deserves our watching the first three episodes at least. They’ve earned that much.

It's not that Deb's mad. Just really disappointed...

For those not up-to-date with Showtime’s Dexter, read no further. SPOILERS AHEAD. Are you gone? Okay. At the end of last season, Dexter was revealed to be a martian. Now, with the government hot on heels he must hide with a suburban family and constantly wrestle with his lust for cat meat.

Are you really gone now? Okay. Actual SPOILERS. Season six of Dexter ended with Deb discovering her brother murdering the Doomsday Killer in his macabre ritual. This season, we’ll see how both Dexter and Deb deal with his secret being in the open. This teaser plays up that angle rather than focusing on Batista’s midlife crisis and his purchase of a vintage muscle car. I think they made the right move.

Dexter returns September 30th with Ray Stevenson and Yvonne Strahovski joining the cast.

The film revolves around a character played by Amanda Seyfried. She returns home one night to find that her sister is missing. She is convinced that the same serial killer who abducted her years prior is behind the disappearance. However, when the police don’t believe her, she sets out to find her sister on her own.

That serial killer doesn’t know what’s about to hit them. If there’s one thing a methodical killing machine who plans every step in explicit detail isn’t ready for, its a 98 lb. girl barely out of state school. It seems like everything’s changed for Dexter this year. SPOILER ALERT!!! for people waiting to watch Season Four on DVD, but he’s lost his wife and his executive producers in one fell swoop. Chip Johannessen takes over for departing Clyde Phillips and Melissa Rosenberg, but continues their story from the death of Rita.

Over the summer, Johannessen told the Television Critics Association that new guest stars are coming in who will end up helping Dexter deal with grief. We’ve got Peter Weller (Robocop), Julia Stiles, Jonny Lee Miller and Shawn Hatosy. Could they each represent one of the five stages of grief?

It seems like everything’s changed for Dexter this year. SPOILER ALERT!!! for people waiting to watch Season Four on DVD, but he’s lost his wife and his executive producers in one fell swoop. Chip Johannessen takes over for departing Clyde Phillips and Melissa Rosenberg, but continues their story from the death of Rita.

Over the summer, Johannessen told the Television Critics Association that new guest stars are coming in who will end up helpin Dexter deal with grief. We’ve got Peter Weller (Robocop), Julia Stiles, Jonny Lee Miller and Shawn Hatosy. Could they each represent one of the five stages of grief?

More after the jump…

“He talks about that a little in episode two actually but that’s not the way we have it laid out,” Johannessen told a smaller group of reporters after the TCA press conference. “In terms of this business of bringing guest casting and how we have to deal with practical questions like oh, people will see that’s going to be a bad person a million miles away or they’re going to see that that’s going to be a good person. I can say we have some of each in our ensemble in season five and they’re not necessarily playing the roles that you think they are.”

Damn, I thought I was onto something, but surprise is good. Johannessen comes from "24" so he knows how to deal with a tragic hero who battles with the personal emotional tolls of his murderous actions.

“It’s what we call the Jack Bauer problem. Because of the nature of the life that I lead, people around me are inclined to come to bad ends. We do talk about that a little. It’s a little bit of what catches up with Dexter at the end of season four. Just by virtue of his activities and in a way his hubris in Four, that he could’v taken Trinity out at all these different times but he didn’t because he wanted to do it his way. He’s created this horrible situation for the people around him who he comes to understand he loves and cares about.”

Meanwhile, Quinn (Desmond Harrington) now has more information to connect Dexter to his killings. Unlike Doakes chasing Dexter on a hunch, Quinn could really spell trouble. But Johannessen doesn’t want viewers to hate Quinn either.

“Doakes was lovable in his own way, right, but Quinn has a lot more entanglements with this police department. To me this is all about the personal relationships. It’s not a cop show. It’s not a procedural show. As he gets into this, it’s going to get very complicated for him, so I don’t think they are going to. The actor of course is wondering, ‘Does this mean I’m going to die? Am I going to die? Am I going to die?’” As we’ve learned, no one on the show is safe. Not even Robocop.

"Dexter" returns September 26 on Showtime.

This new "Dexter" promo trumps the "Blue's Clues" style one we posted last week. It doesn't give away too much, unless you're naughty and haven't caught up on last season. If that's the case, leave the office right now and camp out in front of your TV all day. Then when you're finished, come back and watch this promo. It'll get you totally amped for next season, as Dexter is in for a world of sh*t. It's going to be fascinating to watch him deal with the spoiler that I can't discuss because you've got more important things to do than stay up to date on one of the best shows on television.
"Dexter" returns September 26th on Showtime.
Check out the promo after the jump...

We finally have a look at the fifth season of "Dexter" and it looks crazy. I don't want to spoil too much for those ignant enough to have not checked out the show yet, but I will say the fourth season finale left the series at an inspired crossroads. Here we have two looks at the new season that pick up exactly where season four left off with Dexter experiencing guilt for the first time in his life. No sign of Robocop or Julia Stiles in these promos, just a whole lot of gut-wrenching drama. On Sunday, September 26th at 9PM, I plan on shrink-wrapping myself to the couch as to not miss a single second of the highly-anticipated premiere on Showtime.

I'm not ready to say goodbye to this picture.Entertainment Weekly has new details about the fifth season of Dexter in the latest issue. If you're not caught up with the show, there are SPOILERS AHEAD. Bold and all caps. My ass is covered. It looks like Dexter will be packing up the kids and returning to his old bachelor pad to crash with Deb in the new season. Suburbia never really felt right and dropping deuces where his wife was murdered doesn't really appeal either. New showrunner Chip Johannessen had this to say about the new living situation, “It’s partially funny and partially not. Deb is not exactly the most maternal person. Nobody quite knows what they’re doing, so there’s a certain kind of struggle to cope.” In other words, these kids would be better off left in the woods to fend for themselves. The interesting story detail however pertains to the investigation of Rita's murder. Neither the police nor the FBI believe Trinity was responsible and consider Dexter the prime suspect. If Nancy Grace has taught me anything, it's usually the spouse in these cases. Especially the ones that play with blood for a living.
