In today’s busy world, it’s easy to forget that the threat of demonic possession is real, constant, and terrifying. Thankfully, the new film The Possession is here to remind us to stay on our toes. The trouble starts when a recently-divorced dad takes his daughter to a yard sale. They purchase a Dybbuk Box, which is a wine cabinet that houses an evil spirit from Jewish folklore. What a bad dad! A) Kids shouldn’t have wine. B) Kids shouldn’t be possessed by evil spirits. C) Buying items from yard sales can give you bed bugs.

Still, the film provides society a valuable service by educating us about the dangers of demonic possession. Ever wonder if you or a loved one might be possessed? Check out the films below and you might find your answer.

Burnt Offerings

We all feel the need to get away every once and a while but it’s important to do your research first. The Rolf Family was so eager to get out of the city in Burnt Offerings, that they agreed to live alongside a creepy old lady in their vacation rental. First of all, I’m not paying good money for any property that entails I feed a creepy old attic lady. Secondly, if I rent a house that ends up trying to possess my wife, I want my deposit back.

The Exorcist

the-exorcist_73209.jpg

Maybe there were movies about demonic possession before “The Exorcist,” maybe there weren’t. Just like there may have been chocolate bars before Hershey, or rock bands before The Beatles. What difference does it make? “The Exorcist,” with its absolutely and unbendingly realistic tone, is widely considered one of the scariest movies ever made. And it remains the first thing most people think about when they hear the words “demonic possession.” Unless of course they’re unlucky enough to actually know someone who’s been possessed by a demon.

The Evil Dead

evil dead ghoul coming up through a trap door.jpg

Almost as legendary is Sam Raimi’sThe Evil Dead.” A word of warning: If you only know Sam Raimi by his later, more humorous horror movies (like “Evil Dead II” or “Drag Me to Hell“), you may be surprised by how scary “The Evil Dead” really is. In it, Loveable Ash and a group of friends travel to an isolated cabin in the woods, where they make the completely-rational decision to read the Necronomicon out loud, which causes all sorts of demons to descend upon them and wreak havoc. It’s pretty unpleasant.

Twitch of the Death Nerve

The killer in Mario Bava’s “Twitch of the Death Nerve” (also known as “Bay of Blood”) isn’t explicitly a demon – but if you’ve got a better word for a kind of amorphous evil force that takes control of people and forces them to kill their loved ones and acquaintances, please feel free to substitute it at your convenience. Often considered one of the first slasher movies, it’s also an unexpectedly subtle look at demon possession.

Paranormal Activity 3

Sure, both Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity 2 freaked us out with creepy possessions, but it’s the third film in the series that really brought the scares. And not just on account of the 1980′s fashions. Without spoiling anything, I’ll just say it combined two genres of creepy films to make a creepier film — possession movies and scary children movies. I’ve refused to be in the same room with my young nieces ever since.

Lisa and the Devil

A more explicit look at Satan’s work on Earth from Mario Bava can be found in “Lisa and the Devil,” which as you can see from the title is explicitly about the Devil. And who better to bring Old Scratch himself to life than Telly Savalas? There’s something weird about that guy. Interestingly, the movie was given a makeover by the studio and released as an “Exorcist” knock-off entitled “House of Exorcism.” As knock-offs go, it’s pretty good, although not as good as:

The Exorcist III

After the alternating boredom and bafflement that accompanies watching “Exorcist II,” you could be forgiven for thinking “Exorcist III” is a creatively uninspired attempt to cash in on the original’s reputation. You’d be wrong, though – directed by William Peter Blatty, author of the original novel, it has a creepy and disturbing style all its own. But know this: You will not look as cool as Brad Dourif does if you get possessed by a demon. No one would.

On the heels of announcing that they had scooped up Jeffrey Dean Morgan for the male lead, Deadline reports that the producers of Dibbuk Box signed Kyra Sedgwick as well. Sedgwick will play the mother of a child who has a fascination with a newly acquired antique box. No word on who will play the antique box, but it’s rumored that Robert Downey Jr. is in late-stage negotiations. Just kidding. It’s a wooden box.

Her daughter then begins displaying erratic behavior as the divorced parents discover that the box is meant to destroy its host. While the premise sounds familiar, having Sam Raimi onboard as producer indicates that while the film may not be good, it will certainly be interesting. Further, Danish director Ole Bornedal will hopefully bring a sensibility to the film that hasn’t been tainted by the glut of horror/thrillers over the past decade.

The film is currently slated for release on October 28, 2011, which is pretty close to Halloween. Think that’s intentional?

It’s hard enough raising kids today without your daughter going off and getting herself possessed by a benevolent spirit. It’s not like they make a manual for that.

That’s why it looks like Jeffrey Dean Morgan will have to think on his feet when he stars in Dibbuk Box. The movie stars Morgan as a recently-divorced dad who notices strange behavior in his daughter after she buys an antique box from a yard sale. The heirloom turns out to be a box built to imprison a dibbuk – a spirit from Jewish folklore that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host. In other words, it’s a total jerk.

The Sam Raimi-produced Ghost House film will fill Lionsgate‘s Halloween release slot left empty by the now completed Saw series. Look for it on DVD and Blu-ray in time for Hanukkah. (Variety)

Whatever that means. I'm not used to movie casting news that doesn't involve seven rounds of Disney teens vying to play a superhero. It looks like Morgan is going to play a bagman that needs to deliver a briefcase to a hard-to-find crimeboss, while dodging crooked cops, gangsters, and federal agents. Why isn't Jason Statham in this? It's his whole thing -- running around like a maniac and jumping his cars over drawbridges. Does this not involve driving a car? I guess Jeffrey Dean Morgan is the new on-foot Jason Statham. Tough break, Timothy Olyphant. (Deadline)

The Losers
PG-13, 95m., 2010
Cast: Jeffery Dean Morgan, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, Chris Evans with Zoe Saldana and Jason Patric
Directed by Sylvain White
Screenplay by Peter Berg and James Vanderbilt based upon graphic novel series, “Ante Up” written by Andy Diggle and illustrations by Jock

The Losers is a wham-bam-thank-you-mama style of action flick where logic and brains are left on the bullet ridden floor.

The plot seems like directly from the classic 80s TV show “The A-Team," however, on steroids. A group of wisecracking CIA black ops going by the names of Pooch (Columbus Short), Roque (Idris Elba), Cougar(Óscar Jaenada) and Jensen (Chris Evans) are led by grey haired compatriot Clay (Jeffery Dean Morgan, who looks even sweatier and grizzled than in Watchman) into an assignment in Bolivia, where they are double crossed and mistaken for dead.

To clear their names and make it back home, the gang must travel the globe with the mysterious Aisha (Zoe Saldana, looking sexier and more bad-ass than ever before) searching for the uber Bond-type villain Max (Jason Patric in his most gleefully malevolent role to date), all the while unloading boxes of bullets and explosives wherever they go.

Keeping this movie from total “Micheal Bay Mayhem” is the fun-faired nature that the rag-tag group of actors bring to the absurd plot. They can shout off their signature one-liners and keep their cool in check by not looking back at explosions.

While we have seen much of this “men on a mission” story before, director Sylvain White and script writers Peter Berg and James Vanderbilt from the Vertigo comic series by Andy Diggle and Jock know this and they keep the movie speeding along with series of decent action eye candy and surprises that are in tune with their 80s action spirit.

The low point of the film comes in the form of its music, which, like most whiz-bang action-fests, is filled with blasting pop tunes. The Losers soundtrack seems to be stuck on shuffle with action scenes and stripteases going through a vomitorium of techno beats and 80s tunes. The opening action sequence spews out seven songs in less than five minutes, from “Black Betty” to “Small Town Girl."

The Losers may not be more than a 90 minute cartoon exercise but it gets the job done well for now, until The A-Team movie arrives in June, Predators in July, and then The Expendables in August.

Grade: B-

If you're on the fence about The Losers, check out this extended trailer. But please ignore its attempts at glib humor. It's probably just nervous around you. The extended look begins with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Zoe Saldana flirting the Whitney and Bobby way (closed-fist punches and motel room fires), and then jumps into an introduction to the rest of the team, despite the fact we met them already in Sneakers and The Italian Job. The action doesn't stack up to what we've seen of The A-Team or The Expendables, but it doesn't insult our intelligence by having a tank fight a jet in mid-air or giving Jet Li comedic dialogue. Plus, it shows you how to make a homemade rocket launcher. Who doesn't need one of those? Besides Whitney and Bobby. Sex, anal, and violence after the jump....

It borrows a good deal of its charm from The Italian Job and the Ocean's films and rests that on the shoulders of a cast comprised of rising stars. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, and a nerdy Chris Evans (and his mind bullets) have a great rapport. This looks like it will either be a modest hit or a fun but forgettable mid-season film. Not all of the jokes hit in this trailer. For instance, after Elba successfully blows up a SUV with a homemade rocket launcher, he exclaims, "I'm the black MacGuyver! BlaGuyver!!" We'll never see a black MacGuyver in our lifetimes. MacGuyver's love of ice hockey makes that an impossibility. (MSN) Watch the trailer after the jump...
