Having proved repeatedly that he has no qualms filming guys sticking their penises into unsafe holes, Bad Grandpa and Jackass director Jeff Tremaine has won the job of directing the Mötley Crüe biopic. Based on the autobiography “The Dirt: Confessions Of The World’s Most Notorious Rock Band,” the film will follow the extreme antics of Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, and Nikki Sixx as they enjoyed fame as the most iconic metal band of the 1980′s. This has been a passion project for Tremaine, who has wanted to direct this film since before he even knew how to direct a film.

“I’ve been careful to make this a natural progression,” Tremaine said. “I’ve been offered a lot of scripts but Dirt is something I pursued with everything I had. I’ve wanted to make this going back to 2001, when we were just planning the first Jackass movie and I found out that David Gale at MTV Films had just optioned the book. First of all, I had no idea how to make Jackass into a movie, but I said to him, let me direct that movie, too. He said, yeah, of course! He was being sarcastic, because he had the same level of confidence in me as a director as I did at that time. Luckily for me, the movie never got made, and when this project became available, I put everything I had into chasing it and convincing everyone that I am the right guy for it. I really feel I am.”

This is the perfect Jackass followup for a man with Tremaine’s talents as it’s the only film where a 400-lb. man chasing a dwarf won’t be seen as out of place. (Deadline)

Realizing that Johnny Knoxville likely won’t survive to the age of 86, the minds behind Jackass have decided to fast-track Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. The first trailer is here and it’s far more hilarious than you’d expect. They’ve switched up the format slightly to borrow a page from Borat. The film tells what seems like a longer narrative starring Knoxville as an old man escorting his grandson across the country while behaving badly in front of Joe Schmoe Q. Public.

Watch for yourself and decide whether this is the best or the best. And call your grandpa for Christ’s sake.

Jackass director Jeff Tremain hung out at the MTV cocktail party, even though the network did not present any new Jackass material at their Television Critics Association panels. Over a couple of Mai Tais, Tremaine told me that the tragedy of Ryan Dunn’s death will inspire a new collection of Jackass hilarity.

“We’re gearing up to do a tribute to Ryan,” Tremaine said. “That’s our next project. It hurt pretty bad. It’s hurt everybody but we want to celebrate his life and show everybody. We have just such an amazing bank of footage of him. We’re going to dig it all up so we’ll discover it too.”

The 'Jackass' Crew Pay Tribute To Ryan Dunn

The special will include never before scene outtakes from the Jackass movies and TV-show. Tremaine remembers one that would be the ultimate find.

“There’s always been the Van Surfing, him and Chris re-enacting a scene from Teen Wolf that didn’t go well. We’ll see if they’ll let us air it but it’s pretty funny. Ryan was riding on the roof of the van and the van was speeding towards a body of water, stopped a little bit short. He made it to the water but the water was only like five inches deep, slammed pretty bad.”

MTV’s new Teen Wolf series didn’t even do the van surfing. Actually, the Jackass team self-censored that one, and Tremaine is still on the fence. “We decided not to air that because we thought that kids might imitate it too easily.”

The Jackass crew will shoot new interviews for the special, which Tremaine hopes will air in the fall.

‘Jackass’ Director Jeff Tremaine Thinks Jocks Need Vengeance, Too http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/jackass-director-jeff-tremaine-thinks-jocks-need-vengeance-too/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/jackass-director-jeff-tremaine-thinks-jocks-need-vengeance-too/#comments Wed, 16 Mar 2011 02:15:42 +0000 Geoffrey Golden http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=201851 Science tells us that the immense popularity of 'Revenge of the Nerds' was bound to inspire a film called 'Revenge of the Jocks' sooner or later.

There’s this common notion that nerds have a miserable time in high school, but when they finally get into the real world, they can push former jocks around as the heads of all-powerful social networking start-ups. I think the idea is absurd, because most of the nerds I know work at companies with other nerds, not as the cruel task masters of local sporting good stores.

Anyway, the immense popularity of the 80s classic Revenge of the Nerds was bound to inspire a film called Revenge of the Jocks sooner or later. Now it’s sooner, because Warner Bros. is tapping Jackass director Jeff Tremaine to helm this project, with a script by Rami Cohen and Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder).

The story is about three former nerd-torturing jocks, very popular in high school, who must live as adults in a world run by nerds. Yeah, finally, the guys who kicked weaker kids asses in high school get to kick those same guys’ asses in the real world too. Revenge will be theirs. After all, comeuppance is for gaytards. Toy cars up orifices and beards made from Steve-O's pubes seem to be up there on the list. The most interesting piece of information I gleaned is Steve-O feels it's necessary to save his pubes in his medicine cabinet instead of throwing them away. I guess it would be a sacrilege to not glue them to someone's face.  Check out the video below.

You know a Jackass movie is going to have a lot of male nudity. They had it on the old MTV show but they just blurred it out with a mosaic. The movies can show some nudity with the old MPAA rule that a flaccid penis is rated R, but a boner makes it NC-17. Now you’ll see every dimension of the naked penises in Jackass 3D.

“We didn’t think about the rating obviously,” director Jeff Tremaine said. “It’s funny because we don’t deal with the MPAA directly. There’s a middle man at Paramount. So there’s this sort of negotiator between us and the MPAA when it comes time to turn in the final cut. We have to get an R rating but they don’t want to put it in writing what it would take to get it through.”

One segment that went back and forth was Chris Pontius swinging his penis like a baseball bat, hitting a ping pong ball at Bam Margera. “So we’re turning in this long slow motion [shot of] hitting a ping pong ball with his dick. We get the note, ‘They feel like it’s still too much penis.’ All right, let me figure it out. We go back and try to speed it up a little bit. Nahhh. We ended up with the solution of the black bar that just can’t quite keep up with the penis. We’ll find a way to get it on how we want it.”

As the token naked man, Pontius didn’t want to see his schlong hit the cutting room floor. “I was so worried about that because it would be such a shame to throw away a bit because of that,” Pontius said. “I went up to Jeff the first week. I was like, ‘Jeff, I don’t have any problem with being naked but what if we film all this stuff, should we put a little cloth or something over my wiener? What if we film all this stuff and then they say we can’t show your wiener?’ Jeff assured me that it was cool, that things had changed now.”

Directors of artistic male nudity take note. You can always find a way to get your nudity past the MPAA for an R rating. “I’m tenacious and no is not a good answer to give me,” Tremaine said. “I can handle certain things but just a flat no, there’s always a way. We’ll find a way around everything. Especially from the legal end of things, the easiest thing for a big corporation or a lawyer to say is no. They’d rather just cover their asses and just say no and I’m like, ‘Well, why not? Why not?’ You find out the no is just this little piece you’ve got to take out of it. You can show a lot of it so no’s not a good answer for me. We’ll find a way. We’re tenacious about it. It almost inspired me when someone says no. F*** that, we’re going to find a way to get this dick on TV.”

The only penis stunts that got cut from Jackass 3D were cut for creative reasons. You’ll see Pontius with a wood condom and a woodpecker on DVD. “It’ll be in [the] 3.5 [release] because it didn’t beat out some of the other wiener skits,” Pontius said. “He pecked through this balsa wood sheath they had me put my wiener in. He easily got through it. A woodpecker sees wood, he’s like aaaaahhhh. But right through to the pee hole.”

Jackass 3D opens Friday.

Number one rule: You must be sober to dive into poo. “It’s been a rule forever,” director Jeff Tremaine said. “You don’t do stunts if you’ve been partying that day. But right after... You can do it hung over but if I know someone’s been drinking or doing something else, then they don’t shoot that day. I might find out later that Preston did some Xanax the day he did the King Kong bit. He was terrified of heights one day and the next day, ‘Oh, no problem. I’ll climb up there.’ I should’ve known something’s up. Even Steve-O at his worst, I don't think you were ever wasted during a stunt. The guys are never wasted during the stunt. You might think anything goes with Jackass, but there’s actually a complex system in place to ensure the most awesome Jackassery happens safely. Number one rule: You must be sober to dive into poo.

“It’s been a rule forever,” director Jeff Tremaine said. “You don’t do stunts if you’ve been partying that day. But right after… You can do in hung over but if I know someone’s been drinking or doing something else, then they don’t shoot that day. You might get wasted right after. The guys watching it might get wasted but even buzzed.”

More insider info after the jump…

Steve-O is two years sober now. That actually means he’s more available for crazy Jackass bits in Jackass 3D. “There were some times when I wasn’t allowed to shoot,” Steve-O said. “Like the branding thing [in Jackass: The Movie], there were times where I was up for something but I was intoxicated so I wasn’t allowed. Nobody wants to see us really wasted I don’t think.”

There are also limits to how much a single performer is allowed to film. “To stop shooting, they lured me to the office for one reason,” Johnny Knoxville said. “Then they all got me into a big room, like ‘We’re out of time. The editors are bottlenecked with footage. You have to stop.’ It’s just fun, man, and I do get obsessed with constantly all day long thinking of ideas, but that’s just how it is.”

The rules get complicated when pranks are involved. Bam Margera or Danger Ehren might be working on a stunt, but Johnny Knoxville or Wee Man could be planning a prank on them. “It’s tense on the set because you can expect something horrible is going to happen to you,” Steve-O said. “After it does, you’re generally pretty happy that it did but you’re looking over your shoulder the whole time. I remember the tensity [sic] on the set just reached a fever pitch on the day that I got my nose broken.”

Some of the guys have learned how to make themselves prank proof. Chris Pontius doesn’t get messed with that much. “That was too tense where it was hard to actually do the work that we needed to do,” Pontius said. “Usually if you’re going to be someone that gets involved in these side pranks, if you don’t get involved in it it’s not going to really happen to you that much really. It will a little bit. A friend told me like the Hell’s Angels when they move into some neighborhood and set up a clubhouse, I asked, ‘Do they ever have to deal with any trouble?’ He’s like, ‘No, they set examples years ago.’ So whenever anyone ever did anything unnecessary back to me, like Mike Ellis did something very unsportsman-like to me, I do something 10 times worse in front of everyone. It makes you not have to worry about it as much because they know.”

When it comes to writing a bit, individuals contribute ideas but also take hints from the crew, camera, etc.  Once everything is filmed though, it’s up to the whole gang. Wee Man explained it takes a unanimous decision to choose the final array of stunts for the film.

“We all kind of decide once something gets filmed,” Wee Man said. “Even if we go and spend a little money to make something big and awesome, we could film something on the side of it just pranking each other that turns out way better. Then in the long run it depends on once we’re putting the movie together, what makes all of us laugh and we think is super awesome. So it’s not just one person going oh, cut that, put that, cut. It’s everybody’s input on it.”

The criteria is simple, said Preston Lacy. “The laugh meter is really what does it,” Lacy said. “If everybody’s laughing, it’s gonna make it.”

It does seem like when things get really dangerous, if someone says “Stop,” the rest of the crew respects that. At least on camera, we see the crew pause to let the performer back off. Maybe it’s tricky editing, because the gang says they don’t even trust the group safe word.

“[Say] ‘Oklahoma’ and that’ll buy you about 30 seconds,” Lacy said. “’Oklahoma,’ Trip Taylor will back them off of you for maybe a minute, but then it’s back on.”

Even if he goes to the hospital, Ryan Dunn is suspicious of anyone who examines him. They might be a ringer for another prank. “It usually doesn’t end there either,” Dunn said. “I don’t trust a doctor, I don’t trust anybody. Once those wheels start turning it’s tough to stop that train.”

Jackass 3D opens Friday.
