I don’t know what I can say without stating the obvious. This is clearly Men In Black with ghosts. I think they may have even used some of the same sets. At least Ryan Reynolds doesn’t rap over the end credits. I hope.

Are the filmmakers allowed to keep any money they make off a rip-off so blatant?

Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, well, he eats you.

As all you little Urban Achievers already know, The Big Lebowski Reunion takes place today at 6:30 ET (click here for the Livestream). In honor of this momentous occasion, I felt the need to compile a list of 31 Big Lewbowski animated gifs. I was going to write a real think piece on the cultural impact of the film and its legacy on the world of cinema, but instead I decided to drink a bunch of White Russians and do a J. Top it all off with the occasional acid flashback, and I’m in no condition to write. But my boss is a real Nazi (say what you will about the tenets of national socialism), so I had to give him something. And that something is this. So enjoy the following 31 gifs, and remember, sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, well, he eats you.

Special thanks to The Gif Lebowski.

If you murder someone, their zombie corpse is going to want revenge. Not rocket science, people.

In X-Men: First Class, Kevin Bacon has had a taste of being bad, and it felt…I dunno…”so good” or something. So he’s keeping it up, having signed on to play the villain in the Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges-starring R.I.P.D. The film follows a cop killed in the line of duty, only to return to the force, recruited by some undead police officers, to search for the man that murdered him. Don’t eff with zombie Ryan Reynolds. Everyone in Hollywood already knows that, and now you know it, too. Though not specified in initial reports, I’m assuming that the guy that murders Ryan Reynolds is “the villain.”

The film will be directed by Robert Schwentke, which is a name so awesome it makes me want to chuck an orphan off an overpass. It’s based on a comic book series of the same name, written by Peter Lenkov.

Bacon has played a lot of roles in his day (Flatliner, Tremor-killer, Sleeper-raper), but he’ll always be The Woodsman to me. (Variety)

Bridges is finally getting his dream project off the ground which isn't the same as Tara Reid's 'Little Lebowski' dream project.

7 photosSerinda Swan

We’ve all known that Jeff Bridges is awesome for a long time and now that the Academy has caught on, he’s gained enough cache to get his dream project off the ground. That dream project is the Newberry Medal-winning The Giver by Lois Lowry. The story is set in a dystopian world where chocolate milk has been banned. Just kidding, but yeah, that would be pretty tough. In the novel’s dystopia rather, society has done away with memories and emotion while giving the responsibility of remembering the past to one person — The Receiver. Bridges will play the Receiver tasked with training a young successor to his job.

Bridges doesn’t have a studio or director attached yet but with a script by House of Sand and Fog‘s Vadim Perelman and his career heat, it’s unlikely he’ll have to look too long. Also, Bridges’ character is required to have an awesome beard. Who wouldn’t sign on to see that? (Variety)

6 photosElsa Pataky

What are you doing for Memorial Day? Not this past one, or the next one, but the one after that? Judging be the box office take of the most recent Fast Five, there’s a good chance you’ll be in or near a theater on Ma 24, 2013, when the crew comes back to race cars and shoot guns in some sort of context for Fast & Furious 6.

The entire crew will be back in force for the third installment of the new “trilogy” that has been overseen by no less than Vin Diesel himself in a producer capacity.

The good news is that after you enjoy chases between hover-cars or whatever the hell else exists in the distant future of 2013, you will have a full month to pick your jaw up off the floor for Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges‘ R.I.P.D., which will hit theaters June 28, 2013.

It works out really well because you’ll be able to take Mom to a Fast & Furious 6 as a late Mother’s Day present, then Dad to R.I.P.D. Thanks, Universal, for making my 2013 shopping so easy.

Bridges must be getting sick of the indie film world. Bring on the zombie police!

If he plays his cards right, I think that Jeff Bridges could make himself a pretty penny finding work as a Zach Galifianakis stand-in. Bridges is in talks to co-star with Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D. after Zach Galifianakis walked away from the project. Truthfully, there is no indication that Bridges is stepping into the role from which Zach G. walked away, but it made for a funny lede, so let’s pretend that he is.

Galifianakis left the project over concerns that Reynolds couldn’t make the schedule due to a possible Green Lantern 2 conflict. Reynolds has apparently ironed out the wrinkles and is on board now, however.

R.I.P.D. is a comic book adaptation that focuses on a police force comprised solely of undead officers, serving out heaping portions of justice, zombie-style. Despite the macabre subject matter, it’s a comedy, albeit a darker one, possibly in the vein of Army of Darkness. If Bridges jumps aboard, it could mark a commercial trend for the actor, who is currently filming The Seventh Son. It’s never too late to become a box office draw. Just ask the ghost of George Burns. The films has gone through several changes, both title and casting included, but this appears to be the the final iteration. The film, at one point called The Last Apprentice, after the popular series of novels it’s based on, was always set to star Jeff Bridges as a Witch Hunter, and at one point Alex Pettyfer, star of the flops I Am Number Four and Beastly, was set to play the titular apprentice. Jennifer Lawrence, among other actresses, was in talks to play the female lead, but now that role has gone to newcomer Alicia Vicander.

Warne Brothers and Legendary Pictures are producing, and acclaimed Russian director Sergei Bodrov (Mongol) will handle behind the camera duties.

Wizard Jeff Bridges can bring in the talent, as the casting calls for Seventh Son have demonstrated. Bridges will play a wizard mentor to a young boy and girl that are in the process of being cast. It also appears that Julianne Moore is close to playing a witch, a pairing that will require very little suspension of disbelief.

Variety states:

Thesps expected to test for the role of Tom include Sam Claflin, Caleb Landry-Jones and James Frecheville, while Imogen Poots, Felicity Jones, Alicia Vikander, Gabrielle Wild and Dianna Agron will test for the role of Alice. Neither Legendary and Warner Bros. would confirm.

I just had to Google like every single one of those names, except for Imogen Poots. “Imogen Poots” sticks with you after the first time you hear it. The good news is that all the actors and actresses in consideration are extremely attractive. Whew. That was close.

Further, all the actors are white. Whil I am an extremely open-minded person, I don’t believe that America is yet prepared for ethnic wizards. I’m not happy about it either, but it’s true. Every night I pray that I will see a Latino wizard in my lifetime, but cultural consciousness just isn’t there yet. Light a candle.

You can re-watch the light cycle sequence over and over and over again, staring at the light trails with your eyes glassy and your jaw hanging open.

I love TRON: Legacy. I understand that’s kind of an indefensible position given the stilted acting, thin plot, and CGI Jeff Bridges, but I can’t help it. It oozes everything about style and design that I love I am a whore for visuals. So when it came time to review the upcoming Blu-ray, Longshanks had two options: hand it over or HAND IT OVER.

So how does a movie that practically begs for big screen presentation fair in the home theater? Surprisingly well. If you were only kind of lukewarm on this movie when it hit the multiplex, you now have the option of skipping past Jeff Bridges as Clu every time he’s on screen so you don’t have to see that horrible, horrible mo-cap facial animation (note: that isn’t an automated feature, you’re going to have to manually fast-forward past the suck). You can re-watch the light cycle sequence over and over and over again, staring at the light trails with your eyes glassy and your jaw hanging open—seriously, if ever there was a scene that deserved immediate reviewing it’s anything in this movie with light trails. Hell, you can even throw it on while you’re listening to music and just have the candy-coated visuals play in the background.

The transfer is, of course, crisp and beautiful. As we move into an increasingly digital world I think crappy DVD and Blu-ray transfers will be a thing of the past. This movie looks gorgeous and practically begs for you to go out and get a newer, better, bigger TV. The audio is just as nice. This movie bumps and if you’re a Daft Punk fan, you are legally required to own this disc along with Interstella 5555.

This brings us to the special features, which are decent but a little sparse.

• First Look at “TRON: Uprising”- First look unless you saw it online a month ago. It’s the new animated series featuring a grip of good voice talent, and it looks awesome until you see the character design/animation. Ew. It looks like a bad DC cartoon. Doesn’t mesh with the sweet light cycles and environments at all.

• Visualizing TRON- Watch this if only to see how they made the suits worn in this movie. Insane. I can’t believe this wasn’t even nominated for a Costume Design Oscar. I would literally kill someone for a motorcycle jacket with lit panels on the inside. There could honestly be a lot more making-of type stuff in here, but oh well.

• Installing the cast- Nothing too interesting here. But you do get to see more of Olivia Wilde. I would watch her read the phone book. I’m not kidding. You also get to see Garret Hedlund have what looks like an insane amount of fun prepping for his role.

• The Next Day: Flynn Lives Revealed- This also leaked a few weeks back. It could have been cool but the faux-documentary style is ruined by horrible acting. There are a couple neat easter eggs at the end on the high score screen. It’s pretty self explanatory, but what you’re looking for is DJR and SPC if I’m not mistaken. One is an exchange between Dillinger Jr and an old friend, and the other is a fake 80s commercial for Space Paranoids. Both pretty sweet. The rest are just extended bits from the Next Day short.

• TRON: Disney Second Screen- The Second Screen App wasn’t available at the time I reviewed this, which sucks. Basically when the movie starts you hit play on the app, and as the movie progresses you can some cool bonus info on your screen, like vehicle schematics and scene progressions (animatic to green screen to complete scene).

• Launching the Legacy- Not that interesting. They really pat themselves on the back when it comes to predicting the future in the first movie. Ironic since they completely ignored all the cool advances in computing since the original TRON came out. The Internet? Hacking? Maybe these things would have made your movie a little less like the original? Maybe?

• Disc Roars- Spoiler: the crowd cheers in the arena during the disc wars scene was a bunch of sweaty nerds at Comic-Con. If you were there, relive the best day of your life. If you were not there, you probably don’t care.

• “Derezzed” Music video- If you haven’t seen Daft Punk’s video for Derezzed then you suck. It’s a quick look inside a TRON-like jousting game that kind of mashes up visuals from both TRON movies, and it’s pretty much the greatest music video since whatever Daft Punk’s last music video was. I kid, but only slightly. Seeing Daft Punk in costume is always awesome.

That’s it. No audio commentaries for some reason. Kind of bummed about that. And no deleted or extended scenes either. Maybe they’re saving it for when TRON 3 comes out in 2030.

Final verdict: If you were a fan of the flick and actually still buy Blu-rays, it’s a no-brainer. If you’re looking for a disc to show off your bad-ass new home theater rig, it’s a no-brainer. If you’re on the fence but looking for special features, know that the movie looks and sounds amazing, but you may want to stick to renting. Everyone else, at least give it a rent. I think once your expectations have been dashed by digital Jeff Bridges emotionless face you’ll be able to embrace some really, really cool-looking action scenes.

B Hunt out.

END OF THE LINE.

We reported a few weeks ago that Jeff Bridges would be starring in the kid-lit adaptation The Seventh Son (formerly known as The Last Apprentice), and now he has another A-lister joining him in what many hope will be a successful new franchise. The description of Moore’s character sounds downright nasty:

Moore will play the principle villain of the piece, Mother Malkin, who sucks the blood out of young women to keep her youth and battles a witch-hunter known as the Spook, and his young apprentice Tom Ward.

Yikes. Sounds pretty grim, but Moore’s a class act who could probably bring humanity and likability to any role, even if it was saddled with a terrible Boston accent (hello, Nancy Donovan from”30 Rock“). This is the first blockbuster role she’s tackled in years, and it should be interesting to see how she handles it. The film itself has gone through title changes, and lead actor changes, as Alex Pettyfer has been removed from the running for the role. It remains to be seen whether this one will be a Narnia or a Golden Compass, but, even if it fails, with actors like Moore and Jeff Bridges, they’ll go down swinging.

This post is dedicated to Alex Pettyfer‘s career Feb 2011- Feb 2011.
Disney has done what every other entity does when it wants attention - call Olivia Wilde.

In part of an ongoing campaign recreating storied Disney characters and scenes with famous Hollywood stars (and Roger Federer, for reasons unknown), Disney has done what every other entity does when it wants attention – call Olivia Wilde.

In the latest installment, Olivia is decked out as the Evil Queen from Snow White, being validated by none other than Alec Baldwin, who probably stares at Olivia Wilde in real life, too.

Less exciting entries in this installment of the campaign include Queen Latifah as Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and Penelope Cruz and Jeff Bridges as Beauty and the Beast, which I feel is really selling Mr. Bridges short in the looks department.

Also in the gallery are earlier photos from the campaign. If you are associated with Disney marketing and can explain Federer’s presence, please shout out in the comments.
It's time for the men to grease up and battle it out for the shiny bald gold dude.

Last week we pitted our Best Actress contenders against one another in a sexy battle to the death — but what of the menfolk? This year’s Academy Awards offers an impressive list of Y-chromosome-enhanced thespians duking it out for a Shiny Gold Dude to place on their mantle, including two veterans of last year’s award ceremony. Will Jeff Bridges get the two-peat? Will Colin Firth be v-v-v-vindicated for last year’s loss? Or will one of our young Turks pull off an upset? Let’s brush the green leafy substance off our scales (it’s oregano, I swear!) and weigh the pros and cons.

FRONTRUNNERS

COLIN FIRTH

Pro: Sure, Colin Firth’s a great actor. But if Oscars were handed out for talent alone he’d have taken last year’s trophy for his performance in A Single Man. However this year Firth has the ace up his sleeve with The King’s Speech: Namely, a disability. If there’s one thing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences loves more than hookers, cocaine and Scientology, it’s gimps. Just look at the handi-capable characters stepping off the Best Actor short bus: We have an autistic Dustin Hoffman (Rainman), a palsied Daniel Day Lewis (My Left Foot), a sight-tarded Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman), simple-minded Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump), and nuttier-than-a-bagful-of-squirrels Geoffrey Rush (Shine). Seriously, is thi the Academy Awards or the Special Olympics?

Con: Other than that he’s almost too obvious a choice, I don’t really see a chink in the King’s armor.

JAMES FRANCO

Pro: In the last few years James Franco has done a lot to step out of Spider-man’s shadow and establish a reputation as an actor to be taken seriously. He’s shown range (flexing his dramatic chops in Milk and comedic muscle in Pineapple Express), brains (Franco’s currently a PhD candidate at Yale) and quirk (i.e his PoMo ironic stint on “General Hospital”). But 127 Hours was Franco’s acting tour de force. His performance as a hapless hiker trapped in a gorge was so engaging that one forgets that this film was essentially one character and one location. If there’s anyone who can deny Firth’s King his Oscar c-c-crown it’s Franco.

Con: Franco’s performance was impressive but Franc-ly, I don’t think he went far enough. If he really wanted that Oscar he would’ve gone full-on method and chopped off his own arm. What’s a limb compared to the ultimate show of respect from your peers? De Niro in his prime would’ve done it. And Brando would’ve chopped off not just an arm but a leg too, regardless of whether or not the character was missing any limbs.

DARK HORSE

JESSE EISENBERG

Pro: While the Oscar buzz favors Firth and Franco, there are still more than two dogs in this fight. We should not overlook Jesse Eisenberg who, with The Social Network, finally proved to the world that he’s not just Michael Cera in a Jewish mask.

Con: The biggest strike against Jesse Eisenberg has nothing to do with performance, but rather with the character he portrayed. Mark Zuckerberg – in real life and in The Social Network – is a backstabbing borderline sociopath who’s made billions shilling our personal information to the highest bidder. It’s the Academy Award for Best Actor, not biggest douchebag.

LONG SHOTS

JAVIER BARDEM

How was Bardem’s performance in Biutiful? How am I supposed to know? It wasn’t in English! He could’ve been saying anything for all I know. He could’ve been reading his grocery list, reciting dirty limericks, or just making up nonsense words. Are we really supposed to give the Oscar to a guy who’s essentially babbling? And hey, dude… where’s the bowl cut?

JEFF BRIDGES

Don’t get me wrong, I love The Dude, but Jeff Bridges already took home the Shiny Gold Dude for Best Actor just last year and there’s no way in hell anyone’s giving him an Oscar for playing the same character as the one for which John Wayne won his Shiny Naked Fella. Do you want to be haunted by the Duke’s ghost, commie? Didn’t think so.

ADVANTAGE: Colin Firth. G-g-g-give that m-m-man a-n-n-n Oscar!

He decided to take things in a different direction, signing on to play an exorcist in the film The Seventh Son (initially titled The Last Apprentice). Bridges’ character trains the protagonist of the film, Thomas J. Ward, the role of which has been offered to unbiquitous prettyboy Alex Pettyfer, to fight evil in the 1700′s. Sergey Bodrov, the director of Mongol, has long been attached to this helm this project, and an offer is also out to Jennifer Lawrence for the role of a witch, as well.

Taking the role of a sorcerer-y mentor, there is little doubt that this role will require Jeff Bridges to rock a beard, which is good news for moviegoers, as the past decade or so has shown us that Jeff Bridges + beard = cinematic gold. It will be interesting to see how this theory plays with my newer theory that anything + Alex Pettyfer = cinematic drivel. Fortunately, Bridges > Pettyfer, so we should be ok. This concludes today’s Screen Junkies math lesson.
Paramount released a free 24-page 'True Grit' comic book online. I'm happier than Rooster Cogburn after winning a lifetime supply of bootleg whiskey by killing the guy who was running the raffle.

Could anything make True Grit more awesome? Between the bloody gun fights, a badass Jeff Bridges, and an even more badass little girl, my first instinct was “no.” However, to promote the Oscar nominated film in Europe, Paramount released a free 24-page True Grit comic book online. I’m happier than Rooster Cogburn after winning a lifetime supply of bootleg whiskey by killing the guy who was running the raffle.

You know the scene where Cogburn is testifying in court? The comic book, which is adapted more from the book by Charles Portis, is the illustrated version of that crazy story. Cartoonist Christian Wildgoose (with a name like that, he should be drawing western comics every day for the rest of his life) really captures the rough edged quality of the film with his art, and he even included all the BLAMs and CHOOMs that the Coen Brothers use. There’s a sample below, and the full book is available now on Comixology. You don’t even have to trek into the dangerous Indian Nations to find a comic book store. We live in a marvelous age. (/Film)

That’s why it comes as no surprise that he is up to his armpits in young adult movie franchises. Producers of The Mortal Instruments would love to have his stomach muscles in their adaptation and Screen Gems has put up a considerable amount of money to woo him, but it seems that Pettyfer has his eye on another YA franchise.

The Last Apprentice (The Wardstone Chronicles in the UK) is picking up a lot of heat. Oscar favorites Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Lawrence are circling, due in no small part to the visual inventiveness of director Sergey Bodrov. The film follows a teenager (with stomach muscles) as he trains to be an exorcist in the 1700′s. Pettyfer make perfect sense for the role because, as you may or may not know, all of the best exorcists are totally shredded and excel at walking in slow motion through floating embers. You can’t expect the Devil to take you seriously if you’ve got a weak core. (Vulture)

It only took forty-one years but now PBS has come up with a reason not to flip past them. Tomorrow night, they’ll air an episode of the documentary series “American Masters” entitled, Jeff Bridges: The Dude Abides. In the clip above, PBS has the genius idea of bringing Bridges to the New York store The Little Lebowski. It’s pretty sweet. And check out the Lebowski wannabe behind the counter. You can almost see the wood he’s sporting through that bathrobe. Next stop, the Tron store?

The special will be followed by a re-broadcast of the “American Masters” documentary about The Doors. That’s cool. Just as long as it isn’t the fucking Eagles, man.
One thing you’ll notice when you see True Grit is that the dialogue is a little different. Obviously they don’t talk like OMG, WTF in the Old West, but it’s different than even the Clint Eastwood and John Wayne westerns. Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) speak with English grammar so formal it sounds like a period piece.

“The dialogue, the formality of it and the floweriness of it also is just from the book,” Ethan Coen said at a press conference for the film. “That might be a question for the actors. Jeff noticed. That was the first thing Jeff mentioned, noticed and liked, the kind of foreign sounding nature of the dialogue and lack of contractions. It wasn’t a problem for us. We just lifted it from the book. I don’t know how the actors feel about it.”

Charles Portis wrote True Grit and The Coen Brothers followed his novel more than the John Wayne movie also based on it. Supporting cast like Barry Pepper (as Lucky Ned Pepper), weighed in on the unique language.

“It was more like doing American Shakespeare,” Pepper said. “There’s almost like an iambic pentameter. There’s a musicality and a rhythm to the dialogue. It’s about trying to hit certain notes, maybe an irreverent falloff at the end of a line. It’s such a gift to be able to give some sort of lateral idea to an actor like, ‘Oh, I didn’t hear the musicality of the line like that.’ Just the scene blossoms, completely changes and becomes darkly humorous or odd or quirky or wonderful, bizarre.

Bridges messed around with the script a little. See if you can spot when he dropped an apostrophe into his words. “Every once in a while we’d allow a contraction to slip if it felt right musically,” Bridges said. “It was a fun challenge to take on.”

For a 14-year-old weaned on slang and abbreviations, Steinfeld probably improved her vocabulary the most on this movie. “When I first got the script, that was the first thing I really had to work on was making sure that I understood what everything meant,” she said. “Then I had to go back through and make sure I understood what everything meant to me emotionally and how I could relate to it in my own life.”

Joel Coen revealed that’s actually what won Steinfeld the part. “99.9% of the hundreds or thousands of girls that read for this part sort of washed out at the level of not being able to do the language,” he said. “That was something which was never an issue with Hailee. Right from the beginning it was clear that she was completely comfortable with the language. The language isn’t, as everyone’s pointed out, our language. That was the threshold level at which you could sort of hope to do the part but Hailee had it right from the get go in a very, very natural way.”

The language in the book is based on Portis’s research of the period, so it’s probably more accurate than the westerns we usually see at the movies. Pepper had another theory. “It’s so authentic in my mind because most people were probably pretty illiterate back then,” Pepper said. “They were maybe schooled on the King James bible and that really infused the way they spoke. I think a lot of westerns missed that.”

Ethan Coen agreed. “I’m sure Barry’s right,” he said. “You feel even more strongly reading the novel, the frame of reference for her character who narrates the novel is told in first person by her character is King James bible. It does seem clear that’s where the style derives from.”

True Grit opens Dec. 22

It’s a good thing True Grit is a good movie, otherwise the critics would have had a field day rhyming with Grit.

It’s a good thing True Grit is a good movie, otherwise the critics would have had a field day rhyming with Grit. If grit were all you needed, this film would deliver on the grizzled men, dirty and grumbling with rotted teeth. Of course, you can also admire the story, the characters, the world, the humor and/or the action.

The Coen Brothers introduce the West with a wondrous tone. Soft music and deep shots full of frontier life portray the world Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) enters. She handles her business immediately, negotiating money, room and board for picking up her father’s body. She even knows what writ to cite when haggling with Colonel Stonehill (Dakin Matthews).

Rooster Cogburn’s (Jeff Bridges) introduction is magnificent. Mattie first meets him in an outhouse, which is brilliant, but we don’t see him until he’s on trial. The camera sweeps around the courtroom, welcoming the viewer in and working up to the close-up on Rooster. The cross-examination explains all of Rooster’s kills, and it’s so entertaining how Rooster just has his way with the lawyer.

The Coen humor is present immediately, with dark jokes about a public hanging (the native American doesn’t even get to say his last words, which is accurately racist and hilarious). A mortician’s line pays off bitterly. First he tells Mattie, “If you want to kiss it, it’ll be all right” meaning her dead father. Later when she stays in his house he says, “If you want to sleep in a coffin, it’ll be all right.” A kind offer, but man, that’s dark. It can be lowbrow humor too. Mattie has to share a bed with a snoring blanket hogging grandma.

Mattie hires Rooster to help her find and kill Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), her father’s murderer. Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) is along for the ride. Rooster trash talks the Rangers before ditching LaBoeuf, and then of course he bonds with Mattie. She’s so cool that you see how a grizzled gunslinger would take to her. Rooster’s rant about his ex-wife is funny filler for the journey.

The dialogue is just the right kind of old timey where it doesn’t sound like us, but we can follow what they say. The cinematography still has some Coen touches. The opening shot with house lamps on a dead body at the door step under the snow. Then there are the heroic low angle shots and the score will swell to the hero moments like when LaBeouf shows up again at exactly the moment he’s needed.

True Grit is just quality filmmaking. It captures exactly what the filmmakers were going for and delivers a show full of different aspects for audiences to enjoy.

Technically this is a spoiler alert, but if you see any photos or trailers of Jeff Bridges as the new Rooster Cogburn, you’ve probably figured it out.

Technically this is a spoiler alert, but if you see any photos or trailers of Jeff Bridges as the new Rooster Cogburn, you’ve probably figured it out. The legendary True Grit bounty hunter made the eye patch cool before Snake Plissken. But something’s different from John Wayne’s Cogburn.

“I remember going back and forth but I didn’t know that at the end of the day we’d ended up switching [eyes],” Joel Coen said at a press conference for the film. “That was pointed out to me recently but I never actually realized it.”

Yes, the new Rooster Cogburn wears a patch over his right eye, not his left. Bridges himself had a laugh about it. “I’m a commie,” he joked.

The actual explanation for the switch is so simple, even The Dude would abide. “We put it on the right eye, it felt good,” Bridges said. “Put it on the left eye, not so good. Put it on the right eye, this feels right. ‘What do you think ,guys?’ We went back and forth like that.”

Ethan Coen was the joker on the eye subject, it turned out. “We did talk occasionally about switching from eye to eye scene to scene,” Ethan said. “There was an early idea discussed but not for long, since it is the second version of the movie, to have two eye patches.”

There were some real life wardrobe malfunctions with the eye patch. Bridges admits to blowing some takes by forgetting to be half blind. “Sometimes I would forget to put it down for the scene,” Bridges said. “So I would be very pleased with a take and I’d say, ‘What do you think, guys?’ They’d just go [point to the eye patch.]”

True Grit opens December 22.

They did it. Tron Legacy is everything you want it to be. It out Matrixes The Matrix with its special physics and gravity, and even more poignant metaphysical themes.

They did it. Tron Legacy is everything you want it to be. It out Matrixes The Matrix with its special physics and gravity, and even more poignant metaphysical themes.

My favorite part is actually in the real world though. Seeing the Tron memorabilia, toys and posters in young Sam Flynn’s room shows a world in which our Tron exists in a more real way. I love the idea that grown up Sam (Garrett Hedlund) is using his family cred to mess with the Encom board and rebel against Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner). Corporations are bad and software should be free. Right, Disney?

When Sam gets into the grid, we get the spectacle we expected, but more importantly an expanded mythology and just plain cool action. It starts with revamped twists on familiar games, the discs and the cycles (no tanks though.) After that, they take us to new realms of the grid. We’re really just thrust into the world with little exposition.

When we finally get to see Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) again, he has some Dude-like moments of backstory. I love the metaphysics this story suggests. Tron had hints of the possibilities, but Legacy explores the images of ourselves, manifested beings and the idea that the pursuit of perfection is corrupt. Clu (young Jeff Bridges) makes total sense. You would create Clu if you were Kevin Flynn, so what he represents is more than just a villain.

The young Jeff Bridges effect looks pretty glassy, and I say we should forgive it because the idea of a young Jeff Bridges in a Tron sequel is awesome. Awesome is always more important than realistic. However, it speaks to a bigger artistic problem that’s worth discussing, as the film’s only flaw. The filmmakers show young Bridges head on. It’s egotistical and calls attention to the effect, which defeats the purpose of trying to create a seamless reality. Even if you have a perfect effect, you should still obscure the special effect in some way, show him from the side or less clearly. It’s more artistic to tease the effect. It builds more wonder. That’s what Spielberg learned with Jaws when he couldn’t show the shark.

This is the reason older special effects look more realistic. It’s not that modern effects are worse, it’s that filmmakers think they can just show everything. Staring at something blatantly isn’t special. Building it with technique is, so that should be one lesson artists take from the powers of technology. The visual effects in the real world are terrible, but I guess those aren’t the important ones.

The 3D is fine. There’s no headache. Perhaps the color scheme is consistent enough to keep the eyes comfortable. There are deep layers throughout the grid to stretch back miles behind the screen. It’s filmed with a blissfully smooth camera so you can actually enjoy all the visuals.

Tron Legacy is great because of the story, not the effects or style. It is full of pretty ladies, impressive physical specimens and wild characters. I love Quorra (Olivia Wilde) the happy program, and all the quirks Castor (Michael Sheen) lets loose just because he can. This is a world you’ll want to revisit again and again.

When we finally see Kevin Flynn again in Tron Legacy, he sort of resembles an even more famous Jeff Bridges character. You’ve seen that barefoot, bearded Flynn in the robe, but he even talks like The Dude. He describes digital jazz, man and doesn’t want anyone to “mess with his Zen.”

“In looking back at Tron, the original, since I’m playing that character and kind of referencing that guy, he would kind of say things like that,” Bridges said at the Tron: Legacy press junket. “I don’t know if you would say Dude-esque because he preceded The Dude, but both [Steven] Lisberger and Joe Kosinski, our director, encouraged that kind of speak. That was Flynn too. Flynn wasn’t a tight, typical Silicon [Valley] guy. He was pretty loose and hippy-ish himself.”

Zen master Bernie Glassman helped Bridges get philosophical. Bridges plays both Flynn and the rogue program Clu. Flynn built Clu in his own likeness. That could really mess with his Zen. “[That’s] pretty familiar, man,” Bridges said. “I always feel like I’m that in a way. So it didn’t mess with it too much. We talked a lot about Flynn, he’s kind of trapped in the absolute reality. He’s discovered that the more he goes against Clu, the more powerful he becomes so he’s kind of retreated and gotten into the place of acceptance for the way it is to such a degree that it’s almost paralyzed him. It takes his son to shake him out of that.”

Glassman was Bridges’ idea. “It was great to be able to include a wonderful friend of mine, Bernie Glassman who is a Zen master in this little process. He was brought on board in some of the early writings to add some of that Zen quality to it. So in the early meetings, we had Bernie just kind of sitting at the table giving thoughts as the story progressed, from a Buddhist perspective. Very helpful.”

Tron Legacy opens Dec. 17.

Releasing one bad-ass poster for True Grit just isn’t enough to appease those Coen Brothers. As the film’s December release draws near, the marketing team is beginning their full press. In addition to the earlier broadsheet, we now have five new posters — four character posters and one group shot. The shots show each character ready to tussle in the name of retribution or have retribution dispensed on them. Collect all five to adorn your moody Western revenge drama themed man cave. They look cool and all, but I’d like to see one for Bear On Horseback. He’s the real star. It looks a lot like the teaser trailer that was already released, except it’s been cut in a slightly different manner, as not to upset the good people of Finland. After all, when your trailer depicts a bunch of dudes in glowing suits riding around on futuristic bikes, you’re dealing with a cultural powder keg. It’s best to start from scratch and make a separate version. You can’t be to careful.

It’s Tron Tuesday again! That means more Tron Legacy stuff. If for some reason you weren’t itching to see Tron Legacy before, this third trailer should spark your interest. Unless you’re vehemently opposed to awesomeness.

Normally I’d protest that Disney is showing too much, but I have a feeling this is only a small taste of what’s to come. Having got the chance to see 3D footage already, I can guarantee you the neon lights and derezing is even cooler when it’s directly in front of your face. The same goes for Olivia Wilde. If only you could reach out and touch her… Can’t James Cameron and Disney combine their forces to invent that technology? Olivia-Wilde-vision. Ten years from now you’ll spend your kids’ food money to experience it.

It's "Tron Tuesday" again everyone, and you know what that means! A new Tron Legacy clip that doesn't show the really good parts that you don't want spoiled anyway! Last week we saw Olivia Wilde, who plays Quorra, taking Sam on a Light Runner ride to unknown territory. Now that territory becomes not unknown, or rather, known.
In this new clip entitled "You're Here," Sam is reunited with his father Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), who's been going batty in a computer program for the past several decades. You know he's losing his mind because he stares off into the abyss and is dressed in all white. Only mad men and Boyz II Men dress in all white.
Check out the clip after the jump...
