Much like all recent spy movies, the trailer for Sam Mende’s Skyfall opens with MI6 losing sensitive information about their embedded agents, and the consequent fallout those agents experience when telemarketers begin to call their cells during dinner. Then James Bond pretends to be dead. That’s one way to shake those telemarketers.

Most thrilling about this trailer, besides the action and the women is Javier Bardem‘s hair. The man is a treasure when it comes to absense of silly wig vanity. He’s right up their with Samuel L. Jackson and those Kitty Wigs cats.

The long will he, won’t he tease is over. Javier Bardem has finally confirmed that he will in fact play the villain in the 23rd James Bond film. Rumored to be called Skyfall, Bardem did not share much info but let’s just assume it’s about satellites or something. He tells Nightline’s Christine Amanpour:

Ron Howard’s ‘The Dark Tower’ Is Turning Into The ‘Arrested Development’ Movie

Ron Howard took some time to rap with Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming adaptation of The Dark Tower and it looks like this thing is quickly turning into the”Arrested Development” movie. Production has been pushed back due to budget and scripting delays. That, and it doesn’t seem like Javier Bardem is totally locked in after all.

“We had to pull back to our September start date due to budget delays and ongoing story development and logistical issues, but Dark Tower is moving forward. We’re thinking of starting in early spring now. I can’t really say who’ll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest. We’ll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Whoa!! Whoa!!! Wait one exact minute. Brian Grazer said that Bardem was “locked in psychologically.” Are we now to believe that obtuse phrase means nothing? That’s the last time I trust an adult dressed as Bart Simpson.

Universal Says ‘Whoa, Easy There’ To ‘Dark Tower’

It was going to be one of the most ambitious projects eve taken on by a major studio. A mammoth adaptation of Stephen King‘s Dark Tower series, directed by Ron Howard and spanning three theatrical movies and two seasons of TV. Then, it was reported that the studio behind this project, Universal, was no longer interested. Now, in a stunning twist, they ARE interested, but only on a version that doesn’t cost so much.

So director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer, and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman are “regrouping” in order to figure out how to do adapt The Dark Tower, but cheaper. It’s not known yet what exactly this will entail, or whether or not this means Javier Bardem is still involved. A free money-saving tip to Ron Howard and co: Eat at Subway. Anybody wanna buy a gigantic, cross-platform adaptation of Stephen King‘s Dark Tower? I know a bunch of guys looking to sell.

Reportedly, Universal is worried about the ridiculous scope of their upcoming Dark Tower series, which will be told in three epic blockbuster movies and an epic, blockbuster TV series. (Unless the series airs on NBC as planned, but the budget would still be big.) Director/Producer Ron Howard must have been like, “so you have enough money for this, right?” To which Universal quickly responded, “sure, sure,” but the studio just looked its wallet and realized it doesn’t have that kind of cash on them, and they have a bunch of bills to pay this month… So Universal is apparently thinking about either finding a partner studio or selling the behemoth off entirely.

Casting is still in progress, though Javier Bardem is set to play Roland Deschain for the next 15-25 years or so. The books will be adapted by writer Akiva Goldsman. (Variety)

Javier Bardem “In” For Never-Ending ‘Dark Tower’ Series?

In the last chapter, actor Javier Bardem was being courted by producer Brian Grazer to join Universal’s take on Stephen King‘s “magnum opus,” The Dark Tower series. Bardem is Grazer’s top choice to play the questing, knight-like gunslinger Roland Deschain. In the current chapter, Grazer is close to getting his dream lead. I wish I could finish this chapter, but the plane is landing and I need to call my wife.

Bardem is in final talks to join the adaptation of the 7-book series, which will include three movies and two TV mini-series. Okay, but will there also be a web series and a couple Nintendo 3DS games? Rumors say this will be Bardem’s biggest payday ever, but with all the work ahead of him if he accepts, that’s hardly a surprise. Anything less than his biggest payday ever would be a serious bargain.

Ron Howard will direct the first movie this September with a script by Akiva Goldsman. They’re also both working on the first TV show episode. (Deadline)

Javier Bardem Would Love To Want To Do ‘The Dark Tower’ Mega-Series

Despite a charming updo, Brian Grazer hasn’t been able to convince Javier Bardem to dress up like a cowboy just yet. According to Grazer, Bardem is “locked in psychologically” to Ron Howard‘s adaptation of The Dark Tower. What does that mean? Did he use Ike Turner brainwashing techniques? If Bardem doesn’t sign the deal, will he be trapped in the Further? Let’s have Grazer explain.

“Javier Bardem, that’s what we’re hoping. We’re in the process of trying to put that together,” Grazer said, “We’re really just focused on Javier right now… He really wants to do it, so we’re absolutely rooting for him to do it.”

Why would Bardem have trepidations? He’s been known to drop out of larger fare tent-poles in the past and Howard’s take on The Dark Tower is one of the most ambitious projects out there. Whoever signs on for the lead role will have to commit to three movies and two television mini-series to bridge the gaps between films. That’s a long time to go without playing tortured artist types who women believe they can change. Hopefully he’ll be able to squeeze in a Natalie Portman film or two during downtime. (MTV)

Henry Hill To Play Poker With Tony Soprano

You might have already read a little about the casting of the Andrew Dominik‘s puh-puh-puh poker movie Cogan’s Trade. You may have also thought to yourself that the cast, which comprises Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Javier Bardem, Sam Rockwell, Casey Affleck, Mark Ruffalo, and others, while solid, was lacking a bit of vague weirdness. If so, you’ll be happy to hear that the reigning king of vague weirdness Ray Liotta is the latest actor to sign on to the movie:

“Liotta will play Mark ‘Markie’ Trattman, the unfortunate hustler who runs the game in a motel room and finds things only going downhill from there.”

Between Henry Hill and Tony Soprano, this is shaping up to be a new gangster classic. Maybe they can get some Vanilla Ice on the soundtrack! (via The Hollywood Reporter)

Road To The Oscars: Best Actor Showdown

Last week we pitted our Best Actress contenders against one another in a sexy battle to the death — but what of the menfolk? This year’s Academy Awards offers an impressive list of Y-chromosome-enhanced thespians duking it out for a Shiny Gold Dude to place on their mantle, including two veterans of last year’s award ceremony. Will Jeff Bridges get the two-peat? Will Colin Firth be v-v-v-vindicated for last year’s loss? Or will one of our young Turks pull off an upset? Let’s brush the green leafy substance off our scales (it’s oregano, I swear!) and weigh the pros and cons.

FRONTRUNNERS

COLIN FIRTH

Pro: Sure, Colin Firth’s a great actor. But if Oscars were handed out for talent alone he’d have taken last year’s trophy for his performance in A Single Man. However this year Firth has the ace up his sleeve with The King’s Speech: Namely, a disability. If there’s one thing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences loves more than hookers, cocaine and Scientology, it’s gimps. Just look at the handi-capable characters stepping off the Best Actor short bus: We have an autistic Dustin Hoffman (Rainman), a palsied Daniel Day Lewis (My Left Foot), a sight-tarded Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman), simple-minded Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump), and nuttier-than-a-bagful-of-squirrels Geoffrey Rush (Shine). Seriously, is thi the Academy Awards or the Special Olympics?

Con: Other than that he’s almost too obvious a choice, I don’t really see a chink in the King’s armor.

JAMES FRANCO

Pro: In the last few years James Franco has done a lot to step out of Spider-man’s shadow and establish a reputation as an actor to be taken seriously. He’s shown range (flexing his dramatic chops in Milk and comedic muscle in Pineapple Express), brains (Franco’s currently a PhD candidate at Yale) and quirk (i.e his PoMo ironic stint on “General Hospital”). But 127 Hours was Franco’s acting tour de force. His performance as a hapless hiker trapped in a gorge was so engaging that one forgets that this film was essentially one character and one location. If there’s anyone who can deny Firth’s King his Oscar c-c-crown it’s Franco.

Con: Franco’s performance was impressive but Franc-ly, I don’t think he went far enough. If he really wanted that Oscar he would’ve gone full-on method and chopped off his own arm. What’s a limb compared to the ultimate show of respect from your peers? De Niro in his prime would’ve done it. And Brando would’ve chopped off not just an arm but a leg too, regardless of whether or not the character was missing any limbs.

DARK HORSE

JESSE EISENBERG

Pro: While the Oscar buzz favors Firth and Franco, there are still more than two dogs in this fight. We should not overlook Jesse Eisenberg who, with The Social Network, finally proved to the world that he’s not just Michael Cera in a Jewish mask.

Con: The biggest strike against Jesse Eisenberg has nothing to do with performance, but rather with the character he portrayed. Mark Zuckerberg – in real life and in The Social Network – is a backstabbing borderline sociopath who’s made billions shilling our personal information to the highest bidder. It’s the Academy Award for Best Actor, not biggest douchebag.

LONG SHOTS

JAVIER BARDEM

How was Bardem’s performance in Biutiful? How am I supposed to know? It wasn’t in English! He could’ve been saying anything for all I know. He could’ve been reading his grocery list, reciting dirty limericks, or just making up nonsense words. Are we really supposed to give the Oscar to a guy who’s essentially babbling? And hey, dude… where’s the bowl cut?

JEFF BRIDGES

Don’t get me wrong, I love The Dude, but Jeff Bridges already took home the Shiny Gold Dude for Best Actor just last year and there’s no way in hell anyone’s giving him an Oscar for playing the same character as the one for which John Wayne won his Shiny Naked Fella. Do you want to be haunted by the Duke’s ghost, commie? Didn’t think so.

ADVANTAGE: Colin Firth. G-g-g-give that m-m-man a-n-n-n Oscar!

Bardem Won’t Decide On ‘Bond’ Until He Reads Non-Existent Script

To follow up on our piece yesterday, Javier Bardem has now personally confirmed that he has been offered the villain role in the 23rd James Bond installment. But don’t expect a decision too soon. He’s waiting to read the script to make a decision on whether or not to take the part. Here’s the tricky part – the script’s not done. A draft has been floating around, but the producers aren’t completely on board with the draft as is, so some tweaking is being done.

So when can we expect a decision from Bardem? Well, whenever the script is finished, then maybe three hours later if he’s a fast reader, or six hours later if he’s a slow reader. Seeing as how he seems to be a very smart guy, but English isn’t his first language, I would put the window in the three-and-a-half to four-hour range.

Bond enthusiasts have a reason to be optimistic, as director Sam Mendes has conveyed to Bardem the dynamic between Bond and this particular villain, and it sounds a little more complex than “good guy vs. inexplicably evil guy.” So even if Bardem doesn’t get on board, fans of the franchise can expect a little more depth in the relationship between Bond and his nemesis. Javier Bardem Almost As Busy As James Franco

Prepare yourselves to see Javier Bardem with a really cool scar or a cat on his lap or something. The Biutiful Oscar nominee has been offered a role opposite Daniel Craig in Bond 23.

Bardem’s a busy guy. Last week he got nommed, ruined Penelope Cruz‘s vagina, and was offered the lead in The Dark Tower. There aren’t any details available about which character Bardem would play, but it’s likely he’ll play the lead villain considering James Bond isn’t really the type for bromance. The film is scheduled to shoot this fall with a planned release in November 2012.

Whether this gig will effect his involvement in The Dark Tower (and vice versa) remain unknown. I recommend just mashing up the two projects and make Roland Deschain into Bond’s nemesis this time around. It would save film and time and it’s not like MGM is in a position to say no. (Deadline)

Ron Howard choosing Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem over Christian Bale for his latest project was not the result of a creepy coin toss. I’m guessing that director Howard thinks Bardem (No Country For Old Men) would be perfect as the cowboy lead in his upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower novels. I’m amazed at the scope of the project: the story will span over three movies and two TV mini-series — what, Howard couldn’t squeeze a couple of web series in there too?

Bardem has reportedly been offered the lead role of Roland Deschain, a gunslinger who goes on a quest to find the Dark Tower, and if he doesn’t succeed, the stakes are super duper high: humanity, civilization and post-apocalyptic Disneyland are all doomed. Universal is producing the project, which sounds ridiculously wide in scope. First it’s a theatrically released movie, then a TV mini-series to bridge us into the second movie, which will be followed by another TV mini-series, then the final movie. The idea is to have the same leading cast in all the incarnations. So if you’re interested, Mr. Bardin, get ready to be hanging out with Ron Howard for a long, long time… (Deadline)

One Project, Three Movies, Two Miniseries: ‘Dark Towers’ Casting Saga

Just because Ron Howard wants you to do something doesn’t mean you have to do it. Sources close to Howard say that he is eying Christian Bale for the lead role of Roland Deschain in the (literally) epic The Dark Tower, reports Cinema Blend.

Wanting Bale and getting Bale are two different things, especially because of the time commitment required by this project. The Dark Tower saga reportedly will entail a trilogy of films, with a TV miniseries airing between the episodes. Considering Bale is on the tail end of his Batman exploits, it’s not likely that he’ll be clamoring to sign up for another project that would kill his availability for the next six years or so. An announcement was set for this week as to who would play the role of Deschain was set for this week, but, though that deadline has come and gone, expect an announcement soon, possibly naming either Javier Bardem or Viggo Mortensen, neither of whom have had the mainstream success of Bale in recent years.

As for the female lead, the names being thrown around are Jennifer Carpenter, who is known for her portrayal of Deb on”Dexter” (please no) and French/Moroccan Ghita Tazi. Something tells me neither of these candidates would be quick to shy away from a Ron Howard three-picture deal.

Review: Biutiful

The cancer stricken human trafficking movie of the year is here. Seriously, if you’re into human traffickers going through chemotherapy, Biutiful is the movie for you. I’ve got to imagine these Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu movies play to the specific niches of audiences who love to feel bad about really specific things like tourist shooting language barriers.

I’m not a fan of Inarritu movies because I don’t like movies that wallow in misery showing how sad actors can act. Biutiful is the least obnoxious of his films I’ve seen. Uxbal (Javier Bardem) pees blood and goes through chemotherapy because he’s only got a few months to live. He tries to cram in some quality time with his kids while he sells some Chinese immigrants to a sweatshop. He even goes back to his bipolar wife Marambra (Maricel Alvarez). There are a few bright spots of reconciliation and eating ice cream, but still mostly moping.

One thing Biutiful has going for it is that it’s told in chronological order. The other Inarritu films go out of order, and tell multiple stories so you can be blown away when you see how they connect in the end. Biutiful opens with Uxbal telling someone the story of his mother’s ring, so you can go “ah ha!” when you see who he’s giving the ring to at the end, but that’s normal storytelling. The opening and closing are in widescreen but most of the movie is a smaller frame, giving the film visual bookends.

Also Uxbal is psychic. He goes to a childrens’ funeral to read the thoughts of the deceased and upsets the mom. Later when all the sweatshop workers die in a gas leak, Uxbal can exorcise his guilt by asking them forgiveness. Well, it’s a better, more subtle take on the afterlife than Hereafter. Still miserable and depressing, but more happens in Biutiful.

Bardem really gets to show his talent. Uxbal gets angry at the sweatshop bosses, reflective with his children, sad when he confesses his guilt and cries, physically ill when he collapses under his cancer symptoms. Why watch this though, just to see someone act? I guess to investigate the personal life of a slave trader. It’s not the kind of drama where you get a visceral catharsis from the experience though. It’s just wallowing in cancer and death and viewing dead bodies and feeling guilty about death.

It’s also two and a half hours long. I thought we were in the home stretch when the film went back to widescreen, but no. Only when Uxbal starts telling the same ring story again do we get the relief of wrapping up, and it still stretches to 150 minutes.

Warner Bros is aiming high for the sequel to Clash Of The Titans. But maybe they’re aiming a little too high.

In news from the Land Of Make Believe, Production Weekly reports that the studio would like to put Javier Bardem and James Franco in silly wigs and robes for Wrath Of The Titans. I don’t think there’s anyway this is going to happen. It’s one thing to get Liam Neeson because HE. WILL. DO. ANYTHING. But both Bardem and Franco are enjoying Oscar-buzz for Biutiful and 127 Hours. It’s doubtful that they’ll flush that away so quickly. Then again, it is a chance to work with the director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

Can you smell it? That’s the Oscar race getting closer, my friends. Roadside Attractions has dropped the trailer for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu‘s Biutiful. Javier Bardem already won Best Actor in Cannes for his portrayal of a father facing death, and that means the little, bald, gold man is next. Biutiful falls in line with Inarritu’s previous mellow harshing material (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel), but if you’re looking to feel glum, this film could be a quick ticket to Emotional Breakdown Town.

Javier Bardem To Guest On ‘Glee’ For Some Reason

Today in Cuckoo Bananas News comes word that Javier Bardem will guest star on the next season of "Glee," and apparantly it was his idea. Bardem pitched the idea to Ryan Murphy, show creator and sex-banner, while working together on the set of Eat Pray Love. He explained to Entertainment Weekly in a gravelly, seductive voice that heretofore has only existed within the lust-soaked pages of Harlequin novels:

“We’re going to rock the house,” enthuses Bardem, who became an unabashed Gleek after watching the entire first season in one week. “We’re going to do some heavy metal — Spanish heavy metal, which is the worst.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Javier. DO NOT insult the work of Brujeria. You have no idea the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that went into making "The Mexicutioner." Granted, most of it was from groupies but still….

Tony Scott Arrives at ‘Potsdamer Platz’

Looks like Tony Scott will finally have the chance to make his passion project Potsdamer Platz after nattering on and on about it for the last decade. Sheesh, we get it. You like movies about trains.

The film, about a New Jersey crime family expanding their business nationally, is expected to undergo a title and locale change as the latest script has the action moving from Germany to Puerto Rico. Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, and Javier Bardem are all rumored to be circling the project. Though if Bardem drops out, Scott can probably get Jeffrey Dean Morgan at a bargain rate. It’s also being reported that the Crimson Tide director is trying to lure Gene Hackman out of retirement to take part in the film, but inside sources say that isn’t happening. I could have told you that. Dude is way too into taking bong rips and playing Forza Motorsport 3 to waste his time making movies. (Deadline)
