‘The Adventures of Tintin’ Teaser Has A Whole Mess Of Danger

A bloody good new full-length U.K. trailer for Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Longest Title Ever has dropped on the Internets. It’s refreshing to see a movie done entirely in mo-cap that doesn’t send chills down my spine. Spielberg and Peter Jackson may have solved the “dead-eyes” problem that has plagued so many previous mo-cap films **touches nose with one finger, points as Robert Zemeckis with the other** I’m now officially excited to see what looks like an exciting adventure story. If nothing else, that dog, Snowy, is damn adorable.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Longest Title Ever opens in the U.K on October 26, and in the U.S. on December 23. Hey Brits, don’t yell spoilers across the pond to us Yanks.

‘Retreat’ Trailer Pits Billy Elliott Against A Married Couple

On a remote British Island, a man (Cillian Murphy) and his wife (Thandie Newton) are living a quiet, peaceful existence until a vacation in which they rescue an injured man who washes ashore. The strange man is played by a very grown up and very creepy Jamie Bell, who audiences fell in love with as Billy Elliott.

Well, Mr. Elliott has a bit of a dark side, the inhabitants discover as they find a gun to go along with his sordid past. Despite their reservations, they reluctantly believe his claim that a deadly affliction has wiped out much of the earth, forcing the trio to quarantine themselves in their cabin.

First time director Carl Tibbetts seems to have found a winning formula here. The minimalistic sets do a good job of fostering tension and claustrophobia. Also jarring is hearing Mr. Murphy speak with a brogue. He’s been in so many American films recently, I felt we had naturalized him. Nope. Still Irish.

Review: The Eagle

Well, Kevin Macdonald fans are not going to like me. First I hated his YouTube mashup Life in a Day at Sundance. Now I’m not going to have very nice things to say about his ancient Roman battle movie the eagle. On the other hand, I LOVE Kevin McDonald from “The Kids in the Hall.”

In the year 120 AD, the 9^thLegion of Rome invaded Britain. 5,000 men vanished in a humiliating operation. So they built Hadrian’s Wall to keep the Britons out. All this happens before the movie starts. It’s in the opening text.

The real story is that Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) is the son of the leader who botched the battle and los the eagle of Rome in British territory. He tries to redeem his family by leading the Romans to defend Hadrian’s Wall, but that doesn’t work. So he needs to seek redemption by venturing into Britain to reclaim the Eagle.

I think we can all buy this eagle statue as a symbol of national pride. War movies have rabble roused over less specific patriotic symbols. It’s a pretty weak and ridiculous plot that one guy is going to redeem a whole army by finding an object in some large unspecified territory.

Marcus’s guide through Britain is Esca (Jamie Bell), a slave Marcus saved from gladiatorial death. They bond and learn from each other, even when the tables turn and Esca has to pla the master to impress a tribe of mud-coated mohawked warriors.

Perhaps this nonsense would be okay if there were some impressive battles to speak of, but the action is terrible. It’s shot in such the handheld extreme that you really can’t even see anything. A few of the battle formations are Braveheart lite. Marcus leads a squadron with shields in the front, stabbing through the gaps at any enemy brave enough to climb aboard. It still looks like guys in the woods doing historical re-enactments.

It’s just so boring all along the way. The battle talk is lame. The Eagle is Rome and honor and blah blah blah. But Esca has seen the cruelty of Roman warriors. Both sides in war are bad, get it? There are stories of painted warriors of the Seal People who hack off their enemies’ feet so their souls can’t walk to the afterlife (souls sure do give up easy. I would roll to the afterlife.) It’s all so serious, it’s no fun and it’s not fascinating enough to be interesting.

Channing Tatum Is Jamie Bell’s Slave In ‘The Eagle’ Trailer

the Eagle trailer has landed (nailed it). Starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell, and directed by Kevin Macdonald, it follows a soldier and his slave in 140 A.D. as they go on a quest to retrieve a treasured gold Eagle emblem that Tatum’s father lost 20 years earlier. Well he didn’t so much lose it as it vanished along with himself and his entir legion. That’s a major soldier faux pas–not returning. No wonder Tatum’s character wants to restore his father’s sullied reputation. He’s known as the dude whose dad los the Eagle. Major Trojan wedgies warranted.

For Reals First Look at Spielberg and Jackson’s ‘The Adventures of Tintin’

Over the weekend we got c*ck-teased with snippets of images from a first look at Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Longest Title Ever. Now Empire has officially unbuttoned its blouse and unleashed the goods. We have three honest-to-goodness official images.

Jamie Bell plays Tintin and Snowy his dog is played by…not Andy Serkis! Haha! Gotchu! You totally thought that since it was a mo-cap animal it HAD to be Andy Serkis. He’s not in every mo-cap movie, ya know? But he is in this one, as Captain Haddock. You couldn’t keep that guy away from a unitard with diodes on it if you tried.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn: Longest Title Ever doesn’t come out until next Christmas, so check out the pics after the jump to get a taste.

Jamie Bell Will Most Likely Be Spider-Man Maybe

Bleeding Cool is at it again with the Spider-Man reboot casting rumors. They’re reporting that the role is pretty much Jamie Bell‘s (Billy Elliot’s), as long as he passes the studio’s turn and cough tests:

I’m told that Jamie Bell was scheduled to fly into California this week. The plan is that he will be undergoing a few weeks of camera tests while simultaneously working with a personal trainer to ensure he is able to perform some of the more spider-like stunts that will be required of him. However this is being considered a formality.

Frank Dillane is still being considered for the role, but he appears to be Sony’s back up plan. Unless something goes very wrong, I understand that Bell will be playing the Spider-Man role. To the extent that Jamie has been heard referred to as Spider Man in casual conversation around Sony.

I’d like to think those casual conversations go a little something like this:

Studio Exec: I bet the new Spider-Man Jamie Bell doesn’t have as tight of an ass as you.

Attractive Assistant: My parents keep telling me I should quit this job.

Studio Exec checks email on Blackberry. End scene.
