Baron Davis might be just short of a household name for most of America. He was never one of the best players in the league, but he was close to that tier, having garnered several All-Star selections. He also was a prominent entertainer and noted movie buff, having even written film reviews for NBA.com.

Now that Davis is done with the NBA, it’s no surprise that he’s eying TV. Or TV is eying him. In any event, Fox will be shooting a pilot on a show based somewhat on the player’s life. Davis will not star in the show, mostly because he’s not an actor, but will play a hand in storylines and concepting.

And New Girl‘s Jake Johnson will be producing it.

To give you an idea of the type of guy Baron Davis is, and why this might not be too bad, here’s a video of him and Steve Nash, just kickin’ it:

America’s never been a place to let harsh realities get in the way of a good time. When a film gets pushed back due to real-life events, it’s normally a proactive move by the studio, not because of public outcry. However, the protests and violence in Ferguson, Missouri happened so close to the unfortunately-named Let’s Be Cops, that there wasn’t time to do much of anything. The film was released on Wednesday, and has done pretty well for itself.

How well? It’s hard to say, but it’s looking like a $25 million opening weekend for a lowbudget comedy starring two emerging stars. Not bad.

My guess is, if this thing performs well this weekend, FOX will send some folks to Ferguson and get this whole situation straightened out so that we don’t see fall-off in the second weekend.

Looks like the casting director for Let’s Be Cops just flipped through primetime TV to do the heavy lifting. The buddy “cop” comedy features Jake Johnson from The New Girl starring alongside Damon Wayans Jr., who had made a name for himself on Happy Endings.

It doesn’t look like a revolutionary comedy or anything, unless you’re 12 years old, but the stars are pretty charming and funny, so maybe they can take this film with a straightforward title and make it shine a little more than this trailer lets on.

Casting a movie can be fairly daunting and sometimes it means you don’t get to watch episodes of New Girl. Unless…..

That seems to be the rationale behind casting New Girl co-stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. as the two slackers who pretend to be cops in Let’s Be Cops. After their plans to attend a costume party backfire, the duo find themselves enjoying the attention they get when mistaken for actual police officers. This, of course, leads to sex with attractive women, getting mixed up with criminals, and walking slowly toward the camera.

I can’t wait for the sequel where they pretend to be ghosts and end up in a real haunted house where they meet young women attracted to ghosts.

Damon Wayans Jr. has decided to further follow in his dad’s footsteps by playing a comedian we’re also supposed to find believable as an action hero. He’ll join New Girl’s Jake Johnson in Let’s Be Cops. The plot details revolve around two guys who decide to be cops. What happens from there? Hijinks, dummy.

The film will be directed by The Girl Next Door’s Luke Greenfield from a script he wrote with Nick Thomas. Casting is still underway for the other roles, including a mobster who the guys unwittingly mess with while impersonating police officers. We’ll let you know when Ray Liotta is cast in that role. Aubrey Plaza, not one to be pigeonholed, will be starring in a movie without “Hand Job” in the title. She, Jake Johnson, and Mark Duplass fill out the leading cast of Safety Not Guaranteed, a film based on a classified ad-turned internet meme in which a man (presumably serious) solicited a time-travel companion with the caveat that the companion’s safety would not be guaranteed during the journey.

Johnson describes the premise as such in this correspondence with Playlist:

“It’s the story of my character who is a writer for a magazine in Seattle that decides go….and get an interview with this guy and make fun of him a little bit. And I bring one of my interns, whose Aubrey, and it’s kind of her story, meeting this guy and this guy’s effect on us and it turns into its own little world,” Johnson explained. “And Mark plays the guy the guy from the classified ad.”

Thankfully, Johnson is an actor and not the screenwriter.

The film is written and directed by Colin Tervorrow and begins production next month. Next step: interview the actual time-traveller next week and ask him if the movie is any good or not.
