When a script calls for grown men to run around and scream in overaggressive ways, there’s two names that should be at the top of your list — Will Ferrell and Jack Black. Though they have not been paired together on the big screen since Ferrell threw a burrito in Black’s face, the two have signed on to star in Tag Brothers.

Based on an article in the Wall Street Journal, Tag Brothers follows a real-life group of 40-something friends who dedicate the entire month of February each year to an incredibly intricate game of tag. The friends chase one another across the country, disrupting their professional and home lives in the process with extreme tactics such as breaking and entering and paying off spouses to serve as spies all in an effort to avoid being “it.”

Their involvement is contingent on the quality of the script from Time Share writer Mark Steilen, who had better dream up some creative locations for Jack Black to accidentally lose his pants in front of children and nuns and musclebound angry guys. (The Wrap)

After a few big budget efforts that didn’t pan out, Jack Black is going back to basics. In Bernie, he re-teams with School of Rock director Richard Linklater to tell the true story of a pleasant, clean-cut man who befriends and then murders an elderly Texas millionaire.

Shirley MacLaine plays the despised widow with whom Black’s mortician strikes up the unlikely friendship. The strongest performance in this trailer, however, goes to Dazed and Confused alum Matthew McConaughey. I watched until close to the end before realizing his character wasn’t being played by Gary Cole. And I’m still not totally convinced.

Also, Jack Black should totally play a live-action version of The Simpsons Yes Guy.

The casting of Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, and Jack Black against the backdrop of competitive bird watching had me excited to check out the trailer for The Big Year. But only because I assumed it was a new Wes Anderson film. But then I saw the fat one fall down and realized my mistake. The Big Year is actually the latest from Th Devil Wears Prada director, David Frankel, and follows three men in various states of crises as they take a year off in search of birds… and perhaps, themselves.

I would like to do the same but instead of birds, I’d go in search of McRib.

We might not know what Kaufman’s Frank or Francis is about, but we know who’s going to be in it. Steve Carell has never worked with Kaufman in any capacity, Nicolas Cage had starred in the Kaufman-penned Adaptation, and Jack Black worked with Kaufman in that Kaufman did some script work on Kung-Fu Panda 2 (really?).

Needless to say, this is quite the coup for the oft-enigmatic director, whose last effort, Synecdoche, NY, was divisive to say the least. More specifically, tons of people hated it. In keeping with Kaufman’s weirdness, no details about the project have been given, save for the fact that production will start in 2012, per Deadline.

This project represents the latest efforts of Carell and Black to distance themselves from their slapsticky origins and branch out into more serious, and in this case, weirder fare. Lucky for them, it’s hard to get much weirded than Charlie Kaufman.

Hey, Jack Black! Nathan Lane called. He wants his everything back. BURN.

Here’s a first look at Richard Linklater‘s re-teaming with Black in Bernie, and though Black will not be rocking any schools this time around, he will be rocking a pretty creepy nose-neighbor. In the film, he plays a mortician who befriends an old lady played by Shirley MacLaine. And why shouldn’t she befriend him? He looks so dapper in his buttoned collar and he was thoughtful enough to come over with some lotions in a basket. Only true gentleman put the lotion in the basket.

Bernie premieres June 16th at the Los Angeles Film Festival and co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Rip Torn as two other citizens of the loopy Texas town in which the film is based. It’s shaping up to be a Richard Linklater dream ensemble. Some buddy go dust off Wiley Wiggins. (LA Times)

America loves to watch Jack Black dance about, skipping from place to place and yelling. Now it appears that director Michael Winterbottom sees something in the man’s delightful antics as well, seeing as Black’s been cast in his latest project, Bailout. It’s based on Jess Walter’s novel The Financial Lives of The Poets. Here’s a plot synopsis that’s too big to fail:

“['Bailout']follows the misadventures of Matt Prior (Black), who loses his job, is crippled with debt and is convinced his wife is having an affair. He’s two weeks from losing his home when he meets two losers at the supermarket who offer him a strange business opportunity and his last chance to save himself.”

Hopefully the business opportunity is a splashy musical number, with Jack Black jumping up and down and doing backflips. I will never get sick of that. (Deadline)

Whenever an animated family movie is marketed, they alway break the characters out into individual posters. Like, there’s a squirrel character who’s making a goofy face and underneath is the tag line, “he’s nuts.” This seems to be a very specific tactic for animated films. I didn’t see any Black Swan posters of just the mom with the tag line, “she’s ap-Parent-ly insane.”

Kung Fu Panda 2, starring Jack Black as Not Lemeul Gulliver, has released mercifully tag line free posters featuring a few new characters. There’s an evil peacock, a wolf who’s anxious to punt a football – and they’ll all be your new friends come May 26th. Or, failing that, they will all try not to annoy you too much with their zaniness, veiled pop culture references and fart jokes. (Collider)

Why wait until Sunday to unveil the Super Bowl spot that you paid a kajillion dollars to air? That’s the thinking for the next few days. Yesterday we saw Bumblebee go house on a car dealership mascot, and today we have a preview from Kung Fu Panda 2. In this short teaser, Jack Black‘s Po uses a wok to Ike Turner some bad guys. This is accompanied by the catchphrase, “We will WOK you!” This is equal parts sadistic and presumptuous. Sadistic because it would be like Rambo telling his victim to “Have a knife day,” and presumptuous because I doubt the target audience really knows what a wok is. Four year-olds and developmentally disabled adults aren’t exactly dynamos in the kitchen. Looks like script-polisher Charlie Kaufman was asleep at the wheel.

NBC execs woke up this morning, clouded in shame and the stench of Wonder Woman‘s perfume, and decided to take a couple steps to make things right. Namely, they decided to pick up four comedy pilots from established comedians that actually have decent premises. How delightfully novel, NBC!

The biggest pickup of the day is certainly the pilot based on Chelsea Handler‘s memoirs, Are You There God? It’s Me Chelsea. It essentially follows around a 20-something girl that lives her life, drinking and screwing a lot. It will be shot in a multi-camera format and development will be handled by the creators of “Dharma & Greg.” I don’t care if “Dharma & Greg” people are involved. I’m still optimistic.

Then there’s “Brave New World,” a comedy that follows a group of people working together at a theme park intended to recreate 1637 New England. I’m a sucker for jokes about blacksmiths and coopers, so needless to say, I’m pretty fired up about this one. Peter Tolan is running the show here and should have his hands full considering just yesterday another of his pilots, “The Council of Dads” got picked up yesterday by Fox.

Comedian Whitney Cummings got her currently untitled project picked up by NBC, , but Deadline says “focuses on a young couple and the ups and downs of a committed relationship in today’s complicated world.” Is television ready for such a show? Cummings is a promising talent, so let’s hope they flesh out the concept a little more as they move forward.

Finally, NBC got their dirty paws on “My Life As an Experiment”, which is based on the book by A.J. Jacobs, and will be produced by Jack Black, among others. Jacobs has a reputation for incorporating bizarre challenges into his real life, then reporting the effects. He’s lived according to the bible, and read the entire encyclopedia, then reported the effects of the experiments on his marriage.”Honey, why are there ants all over the house? Oh, brother! Here we go again!” That’s a spec line I wrote that the show is free to use.

Fox is switching up Apes and Penguins. No, that’s not a line from Madagascar 4: Mo’ Monkeys, Mo’ Problems. It’s Twentieth Century Fox switching around their 2011 schedule of movie releases.

The studio’s Planet of the Apes origin story, Rise of the Apes, is moving from June 24th to November 23rd. That makes sense, because Thanksgiving reminds us about how we took over this land from the Native Americans, so it makes karmic sense that we’d see a movie about apes taking over the world from us. Shame us with a big screen analogy, Fox!

Meanwhile, Fox must have a lot of faith in the Jim Carrey comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins. They’re moving it from August 12th (the Baltic Avenue of summer movie spots) to June 17th (pure Boardwalk, baby). Let’s hope Carry’s penguins don’t… slip up!

Do you get that joke? It’s a joke about penguins being slippery.

Other notable mentions from Fox’s new calendar:

- The Sitter, a new “R”-rated Jonah Hill comedy, gets bumped from July 15th to August 5th. (Ouch.)

- What’s Your Number?, a new “R”-rated Anna Faris comedy, got moved from April 29th to September 30th. (Meee-ouch!)

- The Big Year, starring Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson as bird-watchers, officially has my attention starting Oct. 15th. (Deadline)

What’cha, what’cha, what’cha want, Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Will Ferrell, and Jack Black? Oh, to star in a short film based on the Beastie Boys‘ 1987 music video (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party). Adam Yauch, Beastie/movie producer, will write and direct the film entitled Fight For Your Right Revisited. The aforementioned comedy crew, in addition to John C. Reilly, will play the dicks who crash the righteous party.

According to JoBlo, the short film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and the synopsis posted on the festival’s official website describes the film thusly: “After the boys leave the party…” Ooooo, how cryptic. It’s almost as if anything could happen, though foul language and shouting is almost a certainty. I don’t think Danny McBride signs on to projects unless he can use several synonyms for the word “penis.”

Jack Black Gets Wedgied By A Robot In New ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ Trailer http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/jack-black-gets-wedgied-by-a-robot-in-new-gullivers-travels-trailer/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/jack-black-gets-wedgied-by-a-robot-in-new-gullivers-travels-trailer/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 It's been awhile since high school English but I don't remember anything in Gulliver's Travels about a gigantic mechanized suit giving Gulliver an atomic wedgie. Yet that's exactly what happens in this new trailer. Strange though, because I would definitely have remembered that part. I also don't remember Foosball, Star Wars jokes, a Lilliputian KISS cover band, or general Jack Black fat-guy-fall-down hammery. But they're all in here. I feel so bad for the kid who rents this instead of reading the book before his big term paper is due. Check out the trailer after the jump...

Jack Black Will Show Us ‘How To Stop A Robot Uprising’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/jack-black-will-show-us-how-to-stop-a-robot-uprising/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/jack-black-will-show-us-how-to-stop-a-robot-uprising/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 "You wanna step to this, ese? Do ya? DO YA?!?" You all laughed when I warned you on the inevitable robot uprising. And then that other time when I got pantsed in church. At least now, Hollywood is listening. Just the other day it was announced that Steven Spielberg would choose the adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's Robopocalypse as his next directorial effort, and this weekend comes news that Jack Black will adapt another of Wilson's books about robots overthrowing mankind (seriously, one wasn't enough?). Black, along with Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink, are looking to develop How To Survive A Robot Uprising. The eventual film will star Black as a layabout in a future society where robots are our slaves. When they revolt, it's up to Jack Black to save us all. It's like "Battlestar Galactica" with more farting. (io9)

Jack Black Keeps Shirley MacLaine Alive for ‘Bernie’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/jack-black-keeps-shirley-maclaine-alive-for-bernie/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/jack-black-keeps-shirley-maclaine-alive-for-bernie/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Jack Black is reteaming with School of Rock director Richard Linklater for Bernie. Shirley MacLaine will also star and mother everyone on set. THR has the deets: "Bernie" is set in the small town of Carthage, Texas and follows a Renaissance man-community leader-mortician Bernie (Black) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a wealthy but very particular widow (MacLaine). When he kills her, he goes to great lengths to maintain the illusion that she is still alive. Is no one seeing the similarities to Weekend at Bernie's here? You know, the movie where two business executives go visit their boss at his beach house for a weekend, he ends up dying, and they make it look like he's still alive? This new movie is even called BERNIE. At least change the title! And don't think Andrew McCarthy won't call about a cameo. Ever since the failed "Lipstick Jungle" on NBC, he's been waiting patiently on his couch for an opportunity like this.

Jack Black Experiences Bondage in ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ Trailer http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/jack-black-experiences-bondage-in-gullivers-travels-trailer/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/jack-black-experiences-bondage-in-gullivers-travels-trailer/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 A talking rabbit once told me, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." I turned that rabbit into a stew because I loathe miracles of science, but its words always stuck with me. Having said that, FOX released the trailer for the new Jack Black film Gulliver's Travels. It's based off the classic Jonathan Swift novel you haven't read, and also stars Emily Blunt, Amanda Peet, T.J. Miller, and Jason Segel. Basically a man-child goes to the Bermuda Triangle for a fluff news piece and ends up getting into an S&M type situation with little people. It's like that scene in Night at the Museum when Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan come to life, if that scene was over 90 minutes long. Your kids are gonna love it. Pack juice boxes for them and a couple Xanax for yourself. Oops, there go those mean words. Check out the trailer after the jump. Gulliver's Travels washes into theaters December 22, 2010.

Gary Oldman Makes ‘Kung Fu Panda 2′ Creepier http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/gary-oldman-makes-kung-fu-panda-2-creepier/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/gary-oldman-makes-kung-fu-panda-2-creepier/#comments Fri, 21 May 2010 09:15:11 +0000 Reza F. If you felt the original Kung Fu Panda wasn't creepy enough, we've got some good news for you. Gary Oldman has signed on board for the sequel, which instantly increases the film's creepiness factor by 78%.Oldman plays a feathered character named "Peacock" who helps our panda hero track down the bad guys. However, it seems that Peacock may be more than he claims. My money is on a crooked DEA agent or perhaps Lee Harvey Oswald. Only time and a $20 movie ticket will tell. (EmpireOnline)
