While it’s one of the most beloved and successful superhero franchises of all time, Iron Man isn’t above reproach, if only because superhero movies, no matter how good, are a little unoriginal, and tend to get a few things wrong in their attempts at greatness and grandeur.

Sorry, RDJ. You’re not perfect. You’re just very, very good.

But we’re still gonna pick out all your shortcomings in this video. Because we’re jerks like that.

Today, we know a little more about the film thanks to a tipster at AICN. Black gave up some info about Iron Man‘s next go-round yesterday at the Omaha Film Festival.

“[Shane Black] is scheduled to meet with Robert Downey Jr. this week when he returns to L.A. Downey will be contributing to the story and Shane will be writing it in addition to directing.

The studio was not happy with the direction Iron Man 2 took. Iron Man 3 will not be another ‘two men in iron suits fighting each other’ film. Instead, it will be more like a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villians.

Iron Man 3 will be made after The Avengers and will not feature any other heroes from the Marvel Universe. Marvel is only doing crossover characters to lead up to The Avengers, and once that film is released, the plan is to go back to self-containted single-character stories.”

I’ll believe that Marvel wasn’t happy with the results of Iron Man 2, but I don’t really believe these other updates. The good news is that Black is writing the movie. Which means they’ll probably be pole-dancing. However, eight-year olds wouldn’t flock to see these films without laser-whips and iron guys beating on one another or shoe-horned Hawkeye cameos. I, also, can’t imagine that these “real world villains” would sell too many toys. Unless, of course, their action figures are inexplicably dressed in iron suits. OOOO, maybe camouflaged iron suits.

MTV caught up with Don Cheadle and asked about the Rhodey’s impending solo adventure. “Yeah. They’re developing it now. They’re working on that. I think they’ve hired a writer and so, you know, we’ll see how it goes. It should be a lot of fun.”

Cheadle also revealed that he didn’t think War Machine would turn up in The Avengers. But if you mess with the color levels on your television, you instantly replace Iron Man with War Machine. (MTV)

If you bought a movie ticket to Elektra and enjoyed it so much that you went out and bought a DVD or Blu-Ray copy, it’s time for you to ask for extra shifts at the Moron Store (where you work) so that you can save up for the next needless big screen adaptation from Marvel. Marvel head Kevin Feige confirmed today that they have been in talks with Scarlett Johansson about her Iron Man 2 non-character Black Widow getting her own movie.

They’re not going to get too deep into discussions regarding plot just yet though. The Avengers is their number one priority. They have artistic integrity, you guys. (Screen Crave)

Patrick Boivin, the creator of Iron Man vs. Bruce Lee, turned his baby daughter into an Iron Baby. The guy’s got a knack for visual effects. Most of the CG in this short looks as impressive as the CG in Iron Man 2. Plus there’s the added bonus of giggling. Robert Downey Jr. didn’t giggle nearly enough everytime he took his suit off.

First Showing is reporting that Dominic Cooper has has been brought on to play Howard Stark, the father of Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man) in the upcoming film, Captain America: The First Avenger. Cooper will play a much younger version of the character than was briefly seen in Iron Man 1 and 2.

According to my vast knowledge base of comic related information (a.k.a. wikipedia), Howard Stark is a millionaire inventor and the founder of Stark Industries, a weapons company that came to prominence during World War II. Like his son Tony, Howard is a brilliant but flawed character who battles with alcoholism.

The character of Howard Stark is supposedly based on eccentric aviation pioneer Howard Hughes. I’m assuming that Cooper has already begun hording jars of his own precious urine in order to get into character.

Iron Man 2 has been in theaters for less than a week, but that didn’t stop director Jon Favreau from speculating on the villain for Iron Man 3. And if Favreau has his way, Tony Stark will be taking on The Mandarin in the next installment of the popular franchise.

"You’ve got to do The Mandarin", says the director, who has been teasing this in the films already with tiny references to the Ten Ring organization, "but the problem is, the way he’s depicted in the comic books… you don’t want to see that."

The "problem" Favreau is referring to is the fact that the character, an evil descendant of Genghis Khan, has been criticized for being nothing more than a negative Asian stereotype. However, I have no doubt that Hollywood can work around this problem, changing the The Mandarin to a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant businessman hellbent on oppressing minorities and destroying the environment, while still maintaining the essence of the character.

However, since Tony Stark is set to appear in the upcoming Avengers film, work on Iron Man 3 will have to wait until at least 2012. And if my sources inside the government are correct, by that time Hollywood will have already been destroyed in a limited nuclear exchange with the Chinese, making concern about The Mandarin a moot point. Iron Man 2 opened in first place on Friday night, earning an estimated $52 million, easily surpassing Alice in Wonderland with the biggest debut of 2010. But when it comes to superhero movies, Batman still reigns supreme at the box office.

While weekend projections for IM2 are an impressive $135 million, it’s a far cry from the $158.4 million brought in by The Dark Knight, which holds the all-time first weekend record.

I guess this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Batman could clearly bea Iron Man in a fight. Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne are both geniuses and millionaire playboys, but Bruce Wayne is motivated by an unquenchabl thirst for vengeance. And as we all know, vengeance is a powerful motivator. Just ask my old high-school nemesis, Joseph Sinclair. I showed him…him and that wife of his. (Collider)

It’s been roughly a year since J.J. Abrams teased us mercilessly, so I’d say we’re about due. It’s being reported that Hollywood’s sneakiest man is attaching a secret trailer for super 8 to prints of Iron Man 2 this weekend. You might ask, what is Super 8? You being me, of course. What is Super 8?

Hit Fix is saying that it’s the rumoured sequel to Cloverfield. Or it could be the other secret J.J. Abrams project 500 Rads. Or it could be some dusty, ol super 8 footage that Abrams found at a swapmeet. If anyone could make someone’s unwanted home movie a hit, it would be Abrams.

At any rate, now we all have a good reason to go see this "Iron Guy" movie that we’ve heard so little about.

Scarlett Johansson is known for her curvy physique, unique film choices, and popularity with celebrity men. She’s hooked up with Benecio Del Toro, Jared Leto, Derek Jeter, and Josh Hartnett. I guess husband Ryan Reynolds isn’t bothered by these transgressions. Yes, even Josh Hartnett.

Firs Iron Man punched Hugh Grant in the face, then danced dirty with Patrick Swayze, and now he’s getting all artsy fartsy with Leonardo DiCaprio. The suits over at Paramount must be ecstatic that these mashups are making the rounds. Not that the release of Iron Man 2 needs much more hype, but it’s an exec’s wet dream to get a superhero franchise and James Cameron together by any means possible.

Iron Man is Swayze’s limber partner in Dirty Dancing, in case you’ve ever wanted to see him put in the corner instead of Baby.

Entertainment Weekly aired a featurette centering on Iron Man 2‘s villains Whiplash and Justin Hammer. It’s nothing mind blowing, but for all those needing a fix it’ll "take you there" and have you feeling the effects for about twenty minutes afterwords, not unlike the coke Mickey Rourke used to rail off hotel carpets. Also, the suit Sam Rockwell is wearing fits him really well. What, a man can’t admire fine tailoring? **Rips off sleeveless polo. Gets int fighting stance**

This one’s for all of you losers who went out Saturday night and missed "Nickelodeon’s Kid’s Choice Awards". Your incessant need to beer bong and talk to women almost prevented you from seeing this Iron Man 2 TV spot featuring footage unseen heretofore. This new spot shows off Scarlett Johannson’s talent for saying words and reveals that her character doesn’t have the Russian accent she was expected to have. Up until now, I didn’t even notice she hadn’t talked in the previous ads. Between that and Don Cheadle‘s little moment, I guess the intent is to remind the public that there are actors in this movie amongst all the CGI.

Also note that there is zero footage of Mickey Rourke as villain Whiplash in this spot. Test groups show that Mickey Rourke doesn’t chart well with the youth demographic. Something about him being "scary" and "murder eyes." All that can be changed though by casting him as a rough around the edges babysitter who also is a spy. It’s your move FOX.

Iron Man 2 – TV Spot Kids Choice Awards 2010 – Watch more Funny Videos

The international poster for Iron Man 2 has arrived online and shows a bad-ass Mickey Rourke walking away from an explosion while Scarlett Johannson reminds us that her ass is in the movie. Look at Rourke just trying to walk away. Whenever there’s arson in Hollywood he’s the immediate suspect. Don’t try to pin this one on Robert, Mickey. He’s put those days behind him.

Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau was forced to leave Olivia Munn‘s cameo on the cutting room floor when the tone of the sequel shifted to become darker. Perhaps fearing the wrath of a million deflated nerdboners, he lovingly reinserted Munn into the film in a new mystery role. She tells Complex:

You’re in two gigantic movies this year. Let’s talk about Iron Man 2 first because it’s f*cking Iron Man 2.
Olivia Munn: Actually, they just gave me another role in the film. I had to reshoot all of my scenes.

What if you’d stayed on the cutting room floor?
Olivia Munn: I would’ve started crying.

Sexy crying, of course. Which character from the Marvel universe will Munn portray? There have been rumors swirling that she would play Scarlet Witch or Iron Maiden for awhile now. More importantly, will it involve spandex or a leather bodysuit while sauntering in slow-motion to cock-rock? Knowing Favreau, yes.

This 2:30 new trailer for Iron Man 2 packs more punch than the ten hour Academy Award broadcast I just live blogged until my fingers and eyes bled. Luckily for you, I stopped the hemorrhaaging long enough to write this post.

I was impressed with the first trailer for Iron Man 2, but the new one definitely sticks it in its predecessor and breaks it off. The reason for this: Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Can I just say, DAMN. Halfway through, she body-spins around some henchman before slamming his head in to the ground. Best way to die ever. The trailer also features more Stark, Fury, Whiplash, War Machine, and an easily foldable Iron Man suit, but no amount of CGI can trump Scarlett’s magnificent naturals (James Cameron hangs his head, defeated).

Just before the credits rolled on Iron Man, Tony Stark revealed to the world that he is indeed the armored hero. In the sequel, the filmmakers explore the effects of living in public view by likening the life of a superhero to that of a celebrity. Director Jon Favreau discussed this parallel with the Los Angeles Times:

"Robert had strong points of view on these things. He was propelled quite publicly to a much more successful station and we were able to draw upon that. We were able to comment on the phenomena of celebrity as we know it today."… "It allowed us to draw upon our experiences and certainly Robert’s experiences."

Robert’s experiences? Does that mean that we can expect to see Iron Man blow rails off hookers while wearing a Wonder Woman costume? Seems to me that’s what he’s hinting at. You can quote Favreau on this one you guys. (LA Times)

Above is the first official look at Mickey Rourke as baddie "Whiplash" in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2: Our Secrecy Has Become Self-Parody.  Originally, the character of Whiplash was female, but has since been reënvisioned as a dude whose real name is "Marc Scarlotti" within Marvel’s Ultimate line of titles.  Here’s a pic:

On the downside, the Rourke version of Whiplash kinda looks like a pirate from the future.  On the upside, the Marvel comics version of Whiplash looks like DC Comics’ Bane character.  And something tells me that the image of Rourke is pre-official costume.  That "something" is the official Iron Man 2 Whiplash concept art, which you can see after the jump.
