Alex Pettyfer of 'I Am Number Four' and 'Beastly' might make a young adult lit adaptation hat trick with Gary Ross's 'The Hunger Games'.

Alex Pettyfer is becoming the reigning king of underperforming young adult adaptations, with I Am Number Four and Beastly just released mere weeks away from each other doing similarly underwhelming numbers. Now, the young actor might go three for three, as he’s in the running for another high profile YA adaptation: Gary Ross‘s The Hunger Games. Screen Junkies previously reported that upwards of THIRTY sought after young actresses from Jennifer Lawrence to Chloe Moretz were in the running to play the lead in the film, and now one of those actresses might have found someone to play her love interest, , Peeta Mellark.

Pettyfer, who appears to be the “next big thing” in the eyes of top Hollywood execs, but not the viewing public, is weighing his options to determine what his next film will be, as The Hunger Games isn’t his only option. He’s currently fielding offers to be in the next Jason Bourne movie, A film with Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Lawrence called The Last Apprentice, and a biopic about race car driver James Hunt. Pile them on while you can, handsome guy. There’s a square jawed young fellow behind you, waiting to take your place. And behind him, and behind him, etc. (The Playlist)

This weekend, it was all about the Neeson.

This weekend, it was all about the Neeson. Some analysts are expressing amusement as the notion of Liam Neeson as an action hero, thanks to the number 1 box office success of Unknown, a thriller in the same general Neeson arena as Taken. But not me, because my favorite Liam Neeson character of all time is Dr. Peyton Westlake, otherwise known as the vigilante Darkman in Darkman. All of these people laughing at Liam Neeson kicking ass are just late to the party, in my opinion.

The other two big openers this week were I Am Number Four and that Big Mommas movie, opening at 2nd and 5th place, respectively. That sound you hear is a collective sigh of relief that it wasn’t Big Mommas at number 2, since we probably would have seen a movie with Liam Neeson kicking ass in drag if that had happened. Or is that a sigh of disappointment? (The AV Club)

D.J. Caruso has been picked to direct the adaptation of the acclaimed novel Beat the Reaper.

As excited as D.J. Caruso is about I Am Number Four being released next weekend, he’s probably even more excited about the news that broke today. He has been picked to direct the adaptation of the acclaimed novel Beat the Reaper, which focuses on a former mobster who goes about his life in witness protection only to get tracked down by “associates” from his past. One could assume that some conflict arises out of that scenario.

Whereas Caruso took the reins of Four after Michael Bay decided to cash the giant paycheck that is Transformers 3, Caruso isn’t being called in to replace anyone with Beat the Reaper. He was selected by no less than Fox and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way. Caruso says, via Playlist, that they are trying to hire Leo as the protagonist, though confirmation on that is still outstanding. While this project sounds like a worthwhile endeavor, I’m sure that DiCaprio is swimming in worthwhile projects, so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not he’ll commit, though his attachment as producer is a good sign.

This puts Caruso amidst two expected franchises in Four and Reaper, as the doctor character in the latter is expected to be built upon in later books, so this announcement could effectively tie Caruso up for the next ten years or so. Or…we could just see how both these initial entries treat him and take it from there. Yeah. Let’s do that.

Beat the Reaper is in bookstores and everyone I know is telling me I should read it, which is the highest recommendation I can give without having read it myself. What? It’s a movie site, not a literary forum…

Alex Pettyfer, the star of the upcoming 'I Am Number Four,' seems to think that he's Number One.

New up-and-comer Alex Pettyfer, the star of the upcoming I Am Number Four, seems to think that he’s Number One. He’s not though, he’s Number Four. It says it right there in the title, Alex! You can’t just decide to jump 3 numbers on a whim. Be happy you’re not Number Five, or worse, Number Six!

Apparently, Pettyfer found out he was making less than a co-star on I Am Number Four, and subsequently refused to cash any of his checks after DreamWorks refused to renegotiate his contract. That’ll show ‘em, Alex! Work for free, and see who’s laughing then. You’re not gonna take a dime of theirs (he later cashed his checks).

There have been some other reports of “defiant behavior” and the like, but apparently this has all been patched up for now. It had to, since obviously Hollywood isn’t going to put up with dickish behavior from movie stars, right? There’s a certain level of decorum to be expected, no matter who you are.

Actor/Model. Is there a more chilling phrase in the English language? It normally conveys, “He’s not much of an actor, but he’s really good looking, so audiences will tolerate him.” Fortunately, the audiences being subjected to this 20 year-old British lad are not exactly our demographic. Mr. Pettyfer has recently been picked up to lead another possible franchise based on the series of young adult books titled The Mortal Instruments, which are described by New York Magazine as “basically Twilight with demons instead of vampires.” Pinch me. I must be dreaming. This announcement comes just a month before Pettyfer stars in<a href="http://www.screenjunkies.com/Video/i-am-number-four-extended-movie-trailer/" target="_blank" I Am Number Four, another film based on a young adult novel, this one in the realm of science fiction. I Am Number Four also has the dubious distinction of being written by Oprah‘s archnemesis, James Frey who was chastised for fabricating stories in his supposed memoir A Million Little Pieces.

So what does this all mean to us? Not much, since the concepts for both these movies sound completely awful, and we won’t watch them. But it does mean, whether we want to or not, this guy is probably going to be in our life for a while. At least until today’s 7th graders become tomorrow’s college Freshman.

Until then, here is some Alex Pettyfer trivia to keep you “in the know” with the young ones.

“Pettyfer already has seven tats, including a Celtic cross on his chest, Arabic script on the inside of his right arm, and Chinese logograms on his lower waist”

He’s British

He’s good-looking

He chooses horrible movies to act in.

That’s all you need to know about the tween set’s next big thing. Enjoy your fleeting fame, Alex!

There is a lot of shouting and explosions accompanied by blue light. Then number six shows up and I’m all like, “Who dat is?” A hot blonde with a katana sword? Just play it cool, number four. She could turn out to be your dream girl. Unless she likes getting number one-d on.

Yee-haw, lil’ doggies! A herd a posters have hit the Inernetz over the past couple-a days so we brought in Whiplash to round ‘em all up fer yas. I think you’lls all agrees that Photoshop does not a good one-sheet make, er somethin’. Let’s get a move on!

Like the trailer for the film, I’m just going with it. Why fight it, really? Awful beach background. A fist bump. None of it matters. If Adam Sandler still makes you laugh, you’ll see this movie. But poor Jennifer Aniston. She used to have so much promise. Why won’t a nice man marry her already and give her a baby? (JoBlo)

Matt Damon and Emily Blunt were running away from a looming green screen until the Universal marketing department decided they wanted them to run away from a giant Terrence Stamp shadow. No wait, two! TWO giant Terrence Stamp shadows! If this movie doesn’t deliver on superfluous Terrence Stamp shadows I’m going to be extremely disappointed. When the whoevers or whatevers come to kill him they’re going to get a big surprise. Blue Gak to the face, or a dose of human emotion from an alien life form that will give them pause.
The teaser trailer for I Am Number Four has beamed down to give us a first look at DJ Caruso‘s first non-Shia LaBeouf film of the last few years. This bold, sci-fi retelling of “The Three Little Pigs” stars newish-comer Alex Pettyfer as an alien hiding out from his enemies in a suburba high school. You can’t glean too much from this trailer apart from the fact that there’s telekinesis and this high school is over-populated with really hot kids. Which is unrealistic. Take it from me, I own a quality pair of binoculars. Kids today just aren’t this attractive. Or they aren’t in the school zone near me anyway.

Timothy Olyphant ("Justified," The Crazies, "Deadwood") has hopped on I Am Number Four after Sharlto Copley had to drop out to promote The A-Team. Which makes sense. You don't want to leave "Rampage" Jackson alone in a room full of reporters.Olyphant will be stepping into the role of "guardian and mentor" to Alex Pettyfer's alien refugee Number Four. I see no mention of this guardian being a kick-ass Southern lawman, but the casting of Timothy Olyphant would suggest that's the case. Must be a typo. (Variety)
