Your dreams of Community being saved by Hulu have been kicked down the stairs and smashed through the window before landing on a flight of stairs outside that window and then falling down those. In other words, it isn’t happening. Hulu has reportedly abandoned talks with Sony to pick up the canceled NBC sitcom for its sixth season. Just as well. A show like Community would never find an audience on the Internet.

But Sony hasn’t thrown in the towel just yet. The cast has one week left in their contracts and Sony is rumored to be motivated to find this show a home lest Danny Pudi begin a string of unfunny, nerd cameos on shows far less than funny than the one that put him on the map. (TV Line)

Hulu Is ‘In Conversations’ About Picking Up ‘Community’ For 13 Episodes http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hulu-is-in-conversations-about-picking-up-community-for-13-episodes/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hulu-is-in-conversations-about-picking-up-community-for-13-episodes/#comments Thu, 29 May 2014 16:46:57 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=261866 "In conversations" is a formal way of saying, "Don't hold your breath."

Even though it had been circling the drain for most of its five seasons, the reality that Community is really, finally cancelled was beginning to sink in for most of its slavishly devoted fans. But that’s all over now, as Hulu has announced they’re speaking with Sony Pictures Television to bring back the show for 13 more episodes.

In essence, the show, its fans, and its critical acclaim would all serve legitimize Hulu from “the streaming site” to a real, actual network, much as Netflix has been doing with its content.

Being “in conversations” isn’t a very advanced stage of development, so this should provide just enough hope to Community fans that they get their hearts broken. It’s sort of like spitballing the idea around while playing Nerf basketball in a boardroom. Not exactly a legally binding arrangement.

However, it’s remarkable, in the wake of this announcement, how close the little show that could is to its lofty goal of six seasons and a movie. If Hulu moves, they could just be one movie away.

Recently, Hulu has been ceding ground to Netflix in the battle for the hearts and minds of American TV audiences. While Netflix is still far ahead in the original programming department, Hulu is gaining ground in the next most prestigious area: British shit.

Hulu has struck an agreement with BBC North America to carry faves like Luther, Sherlock, Torchwood, and Doctor Who. To be clear, Netflix is still carrying most of these shows as well, so it’s not an either/or proposition, but rather just an effort to be less bad as it were.

Speaking of which, Hulu has also announced a ten-episode order for Deadbeat, a new show from Brad Pitt’s Plan B production shop. So it would appear that you will need Hulu for something other than current episodes of select shows.

National productivity: your days are numbered. That’s because Viacom, the media giant behind channels like MTV and Comedy Central, finally reached an agreement with Hulu to get their shows back on Hulu’s internet webhome. Now America can comfortably ignore its stupid bosses and their requests to do actual “work, knowing that streaming versions of “The Colbert Report,” ”The Daily Show,” “Jersey Shore” and “Tosh.0” are all on the same site, easily accessible from a cubicle computer. So now you can watch internet videos, then watch the internet video version of”Tosh.0” comment on those other videos, and soon your computer becomes a Cookie Monster-esque monster that tries to devour itself.

A disagreement between the two parties over — what else? — money, money, money saw Viacom yank its programs off Hulu. Now they’re all back, including backlogs of “Beavis & Butthead” and “Chappelle Show,” if you opt for Hulu’s shitty subscription thing. Of course, many of Viacom’s shows were already available for streaming on stand-alone sites, but let’s face it: if the latest “Colbert” and re-runs of USA‘s “Weird Science” aren’t on the same website, then what good is either show? (Hollywood Reporter)
