Netflix bid on and won the rights to House of Cards in 2011, buying the show before producers shot it, and committed to two seasons. With David Fincher and Kevin Spacey on its roster, it was destined to have HBO-esque success from audiences hungry to marathon a full season of well-scripted drama.

Although a final figure for how much Netflix invested in the show was never released, there’s no ignoring the popularity of House of Cards — even in China. Netflix has even claimed that it’s revolutionized Internet TV. And in some ways this holds very true, particularly considering that HoC was the first non-network show to be nominated for an Emmy.

With that said, though, commercial content runs rampant throughout the show like corruption (apparently) does the nation’s capital. Products aren’t just placed occasionally; they sometimes deflect focus away from the scene in an abrupt and obtrusive way. Other times, these product placements are integrated fairly naturally into the fabric of the show, even taking on an arguably symbolic significance.

What follows is a list that includes seven of the greatest moments of product placement in House of Cards. Have you noticed any of them? Of course you did.

iPhone for Arsty Women; Blackberry for Powerful Men

iphones in house of cards

They’re smart, sexy women who can break a major news story with the touch of a button. Virtually all the women on the House of Cards have an iPhone on them at all times, and they aren’t afraid at all to flaunt it. Zoe Barnes, a reporter on the show, has a hand in getting her powerful male boss axed with a tweet from her oh-so-noticeable Apple product. Claire, meanwhile, arranges forbidden meetings and sexy liaisons with lovers and lobbyists using her iPhone. If they have their iPhones handy, it’s probably best to steer clear of these women, assuming you want to stay out of trouble.

Men on the show, however, are noticeable for having their Blackberry devices handy (or, in a particular instance, mistakenly leaving them around in a moment of sexual seduction). That was the case in season one’s close, when Frank’s Blackberry got the money shot when he closed in on his wife Claire in a lustful moment of love. Peter Russo, meanwhile, casually threw his Blackberry out of his car window and died shortly thereafter. The message concerning Blackberry is pretty clear in the show’s subtext: protect these devices like a suckling little child or die a very miserable death.

No Sex Without Mobile Devices Invading Your Space

We’ve already discussed one sex scene where the Blackberry made an appearance (i.e. the one involving Frank and his wife Claire). Well, we’re not done yet. Zoe Barnes, who’s played by Kata Mara, has six on-screen encounters involving or implying sex. A mobile device was present  in four out of those six sex scenes — and by “in them,” we mean the device was intimately involved in some way.

Of course, the character clearly had a fun and fulfilling time in these scenes. The other two scenes where a mobile device wasn’t present? Yes, you guessed it, she isn’t portrayed as feeling too thrilled in the slightest. Of course, this brings viewers to yet another valuable lesson — namely, that nothing can be sexy unless a mobile device is present and accounted for.

The Couple That Lights Up Together, Stays Together

claire and francis smoking at the window

While the iPhone/Blackberry play peek-a-boo in sexual scenes through the series, nothing says “stable relationship” like lighting up with your partner in matrimony after a long day’s work. Sure, all relationships have their proverbial ups and downs, but it’s nothing that a mutual cigarette can’t fix.

No matter if he’s out sleeping with journalists or sabotaging his colleagues’ careers to gain in his own, Frank always comes home to Claire to share a nightly cigarette. Oh, and to include a note of important advice from Frank on a related subject: “Never slap a man while he’s chewing tobacco!”

Pork: The Preferred Meat of Political Power Players

If you’re thinking about becoming Vice President of the United States of America, you should start thinking about “breaking bacon” with his billionaire bestie. Need to raise thousands of dollars fast for an amorphous nonprofit? You’ll need to arm yourself with the right foodstuff; at least, assuming you’re trying to get Frank’s ear.

Hopefully, you have a full rack of pork ribs ready to toss on the grill. Freddy, who’s Frank’s favorite BBQ chef, appears in seven of the 13 episodes in the first season of the show. Does he do anything to further Frank’s efforts as a politician? Not at all (at least not until the second season). But he does make delicious pork ribs.

Parallel Parking is Easier if You’re Driving Drunk in a Cadillac

According to the State Justice Department’s statistics, only 32 people in the District of Columbia were arrested for a DUI in 2013. Compare that to the state with the highest — California — with 214,828 DUI arrests. Perhaps the reason for this is how easy it apparently is to maneuver a Cadillac. Peter Russo’s drunk parallel parking jobs in the show are quite the marvel, considering he’s boozed up. Fast forward to episode 11 of season one at 24:30. Instead of knocking over the fire hydrant, he parks a perfect six inches away from the curb. Maybe California can stand to increase its sales of Cadillacs. To say the least, a smaller foreign sports car would definitely have been a better car to parallel park, but then again drunk parallel parking isn’t advisable regardless of what country your car comes from…..well maybe Russian cars are used to it.

Pizza Hut Makes a Man Lose Focus

Yes, David Rasmussen, the House majority leader, is lazy and incompetent. But guess what? It’s not his fault! The congressional cafeteria offers such delicious pizza that the man can’t focus, leaving him prone to unprotected strikes from pork-eating sharks like the man himself, Frank Underwood. In addition to cocaine and prostitutes, Pizza Hut uncovers itself to be one of guilty pleasures that politicians find themselves indulged in.

Wealthy People Love Their Sony Products

This television series also showcases just how much people — rich ones, that is — love their Sony products. Even with this impossible to manage workload, Frank finds the time to play video games on his Playstation Vita. Although Claire owns an iPhone, she uses a Sony onboard navigation system if she’s in a hurry and needs to get somewhere fast. This latter point is particularly interesting, considering the iPhone comes with a GPS system that can do the same job.

Although these eight make the list, there are plenty of other products featured throughout the show. What do you think of this sneaky method of emphasizing the material, consumerist society in which the House Of Cards cast lives? Where else in the show have you spotted products that are being blatantly advertised? Leave a comment below, and let us know what your eyes catches!

House of Cards, the formerly-cult party game for “horrible people” saw a synergy opportunity and took it in a fairly surprising fashion. With anticipation of House of Cards season two having reached a fever pitch, Cards Against Humanity released a House of Cards themed expansion pack.

I’m hesitant to make any jokes here about what it could entail, at the risk of spoiling those catching up on season one, but it’s probably safe to assume there’s something there about Kevin Spacey having a gay experience with his prep school buddies.

Netflix gave the game makers $50k, which they subsequently sent straight to charity. Huh. Maybe it’s not such a game for horrible people after all.

Having learned his lesson from The Red Wedding, and, to a much lesser extent, the death of Cooter in season two of Justified, Barack Obama took to Twitter to let the free world know of his anticipation of season two of Netflix’s House of Cards.

Also, don’t spoil it for him.

I’m not quite sure I would have access to the most powerful man in the free world to spoil a TV show for him, but if I do have that kind of reach, I would like to take a few minutes speaking about the Ukraine and the double-edged sword of nationalized health care.

Mr. President – I’ll give you the same advice I give anyone else. Expect a moratorium on social media spoilers for 24-48 hours following the television event. After that, it’s caveat emptor. If you have time to be browsing Twitter and coming across spoilers, you have time to sit your ass down and watch the rest of the season.

It’s not our job to make sure you don’t get House of Cards spoiled for you. That’s your job. Also, running the country.

I regret to inform you that Valentine’s Day is this Friday. If you’re not so into scrambling for a restaurant reservation and stressing about whether your significant other would prefer flowers or chocolates (always go chocolates, unless you’re a crazy person), you might find a night in with a movie more agreeable. It doesn’t matter if you’re one half of a homebody couple or if you’re single and in the mood to veg out. Netflix thankfully has a bunch of Valentine’s-appropriate titles to stream, and we’ve got a bunch of suggestions right here.

1. Amelie

What could be more romantic than a French movie? Rien. (That means nothing in French.) There are few choices quite as charming as this one about a shy young woman who spends so much time changing the lives of the people around her that she forgets to allow herself to be loved. Sounds corny, but the execution is amazing.

House of Cards is back for a second season on Netflix beginning February 14th. Now that Frank Underwood has deftly manipulated his way into the Vice President’s chair, what lengths will he go to hide his secrets and protect his position? Does he have his eye on the presidency?? Will the American public accept a leader who randomly turns to the side and speaks to an imaginary audience?

You’ll have to begin binge-watching on Valentine’s Day to find out.

With Kevin Spacey serving as the lynchpin of the show, and David Fincher still ostensibly overseeing the show (Maybe? Possibly?), you can’t blame Netflix for getting ahead of themselves in tying up the duo for season three of House of Cards before season two even hits your broadband connection.

However, wanting might not be enough, as the series was created with a two-season run in mind, and according to co-executive producer, “Kevin Spacey likes to do movies, and Robin Wright likes to do movies.” So there you have it.

Nonetheless, the conversation has begun, and we will just have to wait to see, possibly until the end of season two, when Kevin Spacey faces the camera, then puts on a party hat, shouting joyously, “We’ve been renewed!”

Which will probably not happen.

If you by any chance auditioned for My Mother’s Curse, The Gangster Squad, or Kevin Spacey‘s Netflix thing, I have some news to break. Here’s today’s casting round-up.

5 photosRooney Mara Looks Like Paul Dano In New 'Dragon Tattoo' Pics

ADAM SCOTT will appear with Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand in My Mother’s Curse as well as the comedy See Girl Run opposite Robin Tunney where he’ll play a sensitive artist. Adam, I hope you checked with Paul Rudd to make sure he wasn’t interested in these roles first. He has seniority. (THR)

ANTHONY MACKIE will join The Gangster Squad after all. He’ll play Rocky Washington, the first black lieutenant in the LAPD who bumped himself back down to beat cop before being recruited to join Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin‘s elite squad of gangsterbusters. He’s their Winston. (Variety)

ROBIN WRIGHT is in talks to star opposite Kevin Spacey in David Fincher‘s Netflix original series, “House Of Cards.” The political thriller is slated to begin production next spring so she has plenty of time to add and remove “Penn” from her name before the guy who animates the opening credits has to request last call. That’s why Canadian broadcasters are urging to have Netflix Canada forced to abide by the same regulations which they have to work under. That, or money. Yeah, it seems like a money thing.

Now that Netflix is generating their own content, it could be argued that they are a broadcaster. However, regulating Netflix is only a few steps away from regulating the Internet. And what will happen then? Our wives and girlfriends will find our porn is what. Please Canada, I urge you to look into the horny depths of your pervert hearts and call off the hounds. Thank you. Netflix continues to make the competition look silly, this time by scoring its first original programming agreement for two seasons of “House of Cards,” a new show produced by David Fincher and Kevin Spacey, who also stars.

Yeah, that could be pretty good.

Details haven’t been disclosed, but Deadline reports that the video-rental juggernaut paid over $100M for the privilege of acquiring 26 original eps. The series focuses on British politicians clamoring for power at the end of Margaret Thatcher‘s tenure. Huh. I just bored myself to actual tears by simply typing that sentence. Well, the subject matter doesn’t sound terribly engaging, but one mustn’t doubt David Fincher. Spacey, maybe (K-Pax, Pay It Forward), but never Fincher. Besides, I’ve always felt that Kevin Spacey was a dry little British man trapped in a dry little American man’s body, so let’s see where this goes.

The move comes at a critical time for Netflix, which has performed its finishing move on Blockbuster, but is looking at growing online competition from Amazon and Hulu, while facing DVD competition from Redbox. This move is the first of its kind, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a winner. But with these names attached, it’s hard to bet against it.

Everyone is getting on board the “quality TV” bandwagon, and now that includes such names as David Fincher and (again) Kevin Spacey. The project is called “House of Cards,” a series based on the novel and British miniseries:

“The political thriller … is set at the end of Margaret Thatcher‘s tenure as prime minister and follows a British politician with his eye on the top job.”

Fincher is executive producing along with Spacey and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button screenwriter Eric Roth. It hasn’t been shopped to networks yet. I can guess that it probably won’t be on AMC, since the whole political thriller angle is pretty much covered by “Rubicon” on that network. But then again maybe the drawing power of Spacey and Fincher would offset that. (via Deadline)
