Having fallen out of the mainstream public consciousness sometime around Clerks 2 six years ago, Kevin Smith has kept on truckin’ with limited commercial or critical success during that time, bouncing between writer/director and speaker/fanboy icon.

So it’s only somewhat surprising that Smith has decided to call it a day with the apparently-upcoming Clerks 3. In case you don’t believe me, we’ve got the Tweet to prove it.

“So with the ‘HIT SOMEBODY‘ shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be ‘CLERKS III”

In case you’re a little confused by the first part of that sentence, Smith’s upcoming hockey comedy Hit Somebody has now become a TV mini-series, rather than the feature film it was initially sought to be.

This news will likely be met with mixed reviews by Smith fans and haters alike, having soiled much of his indie charm with sequels and works operating in his trademark View Askewniverse which keeps familiar faces from his Clerks days and beyond popping up whether they’re welcome or not.

So, it’s bad because you like him, or bad because you like to hate him. Or it’s good because you hate him, or good because you like him but think he’s done. It’s not up to us to tell you how to feel.

Kevin Smith’s ‘Hit Somebody’ Will Be Two Movies Because That Makes Sense For A Hockey Comedy http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/kevin-smiths-hit-somebody-will-be-two-movies-because-that-makes-sense-for-a-hockey-comedy/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/kevin-smiths-hit-somebody-will-be-two-movies-because-that-makes-sense-for-a-hockey-comedy/#comments Mon, 15 Aug 2011 21:41:04 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=224589 He had a hard time getting down to only two. The films will be released with a scant 14 conversations about Chewbacca's genitals.

Master of brevity Kevin Smith has decided that it is simply not possible to cram Hit Somebody, the story of a fictional hockey player, into just one film. I mean, it was done with Slap Shot, Youngblood, Happy Gilmore, and The Cutting Edge, but think how much better those movies would have been if they were…two movies. I don’t have a calculator in front of me, but I think that would make the films 12X better at least.

Consequently, Kevin Smith, never one to argue with hard scientific data like the figures above, has decided to streeeeeeeetch out his hockey character study Hit Somebody into two films, one chronicling the protagonist’s childhood, and the other following his time spent playing pro hockey. It’s like Kill Bill, but with a lot more ten-minute conversations about jizz.

Kevin Smith wants to get the band back together. At a scant 110 pages, he’s halfway through the Hit Somebody script and is hoping to rejoin the studio system. Which means he wants to spend studio money.

And how does one who has burned his studio bridges get a hold of their sweet, sweet money? By hiring the hottest talent of 1997, of course. Smith is hoping that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will agree to cameo in his “final” film.

Studios would be crazy to not want to give Smith his projected $15 million budget. This movie has all the trappings of a hit. A) it’s based on a Warren Zevon song. B) it’s described as “a love letter to Canada.” C) Seann William Scott passed on it. D) Kevin Smith is involved. (MTV)

Kevin Smith’s new horror movie Red State is currently set to scare/disgust/not get a reaction from critics at the Sundance Film Festival, but Smith is already drumming up publicity for his next movie. The final credit card for Red State reads as follows: ““Almost this entire cast will return in Hit Somebody.” I looked it up, and it turns out that Hit Somebody is NOT about Don Rickles’s famous line to Frank Sinatra:

Based on the Warren Zevon song, Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song), the story is about an insanely passionate hockey player named Buddy who gets his chance play professional hockey for the World Hockey Association, but as an enforcer. The movie tells the story of a hockey enforcer who strives to score just one goal in a hockey game. The film adaptation will be set in the late 1970s right before the World Hockey Association was absorbed into the NHL, “during the last gasp of the goon era of hockey when it was all about fighting.”

It reminds me of this hilarious joke that I just made up: “I was watching a fight and out of nowhere a hockey game broke out!” Ha! Anyway, on Twitter, Kevin Smith revealed that Michael Parks and John Goodman will be playing Buddy’s coaches at various points in his hockey career. He said some other stuff too but as usual I can’t tell what the hell he’s talking about. (via SlashFilm)

After being dissed and dismissed by Seann William Scott, Kevin Smith has found his tough guy lead for Hit Somebody. It’s none other than….. some kid! ABC Family actor Nicholas Braun, who just wrapped up work with Smith on his horror flick Red State, has made a great impression on the director and will team up with him again on his Warren Zevon-inspired hockey film. Smith broke the news via his Hollywood Babble-On Smodcast:

“At one point it was Seann William Scott, and Seann William Scott apparently wanted to make a hockey movie real fuckin’ bad… So he went to do another one, which meant we were star-less for a while, which was totally OK by me. But then I found so much of my Hit Somebody cast while makin Red State, so… The guy who’s going to play my lead, whose name is Buddy McKraken in the movie, is a fella who’s in our flick [Red State] and his name is Nicholas Braun. He’s this really great actor who I love to death and he is the perfect lead for this hockey movie, for this script, which is based on this Warren Zevon song.”

In summary, the film is carried by a little known lead and will be marketed solely on the name recognition of Kevin Smith and Warren Zevon. Yikes. This one’s definitely going to need an Affleck.  (via /Film)

No deal is in place yet but this is who Smith really wants for the project. Having worked together most recently on Cop Out, Smith says of Scott:"I had all the elements in place, and the one thing I was missing was the personality. He is that guy."He goes on to say:"I look at this as Seann's opportunity to go to the (Tom) Hanks level."What does that entail? Goofy wigs and AIDS dramas? If I were to cast a movie called Hit Somebody, my immediate choice would be to hire Sean Penn. (NHL.com)
