We’ve got some Veep spoilers for you, if you’re the type of person who a) watches Veep and b) feels Veep can be spoiled by plot points. So just read something else if you’re on the fence. If you’re not, keep reading and enjoy some knowledge.

Hugh Laurie has been seen bombing around the Veep sets in D.C. in an acting capacity. It’s not known what role he’s playing, but the money is on him being the new veep, seeing as how Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’ Selina Meyer was made president this past season.

Laurie, despite his turn on the procedural drama House, is a comic actor by trade from the school of Blackadder, so he should fit right in with the rest of the impeccable comic cast.

The sprawling world and popularity of Game of Thrones is a franchisor’s wet dream. There is no end to the amount of DVD’s, posters, dragon Trapper Keepers, and SkyMall swords that can be slapped with the show’s name, and all of a sudden, they’re legit.

And with George R.R. Martin taking his sweet-ass time on the books, and new episodes appearing only every ten months or so, there’s a lot of unmet Game of Thrones demand from America. So it should come as little surprise that the empire may expand to conquer movie theaters so that it may squash their heads until those theater heads explode.

Charles Dance, who plays Tywin Lannister, said to Daily Beast in promoting his upcoming film The Imitation Game, “There’s talk of eventually trying to do a feature film, but I don’t know which of the storylines. There’s so much to cram into a film.”

Yes, Charles. There IS a lot to cram in a film. But there’s even more material to NOT cram into a film, right? What? Yes. Considering no less than Martin himself said this was a possibility earlier, I think we should start to get a little excited about this.

A few months back, we had announced that Westworld, a film by Michael Crichton in 1973, was being reworked as a show on HBO. Well, HBO must have been pretty happy with the progress, because they have taken the thing to series, meaning we’ll be getting a season at least of the show.

You can read here for more of a description of the show, but suffice it to say that Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Nolan, and some other folks are now either robots in the old west, or fighting robots in the old west. It’s about time.

All we know about the show is that it’s airing some time in 2015. It’s been filming for a while, so probably not too far into 2015, though. Brace yourself for COWBOY ROBOTS.

After a truly bizarre Girls teaser that was meta on so many levels that I developed a minor nose bleed, we’re finally getting a bona fide preview of the upcoming season 4. The clip gives a rundown of where the four girls have gone and where they’ll be in the coming season, and allows us to drop in on our favorite minor characters as well.

None of this is terrible thorough, I’m aware, but if you want to see what I’m talking about, just watch the damn clip. It’s two minutes long.

What the clip doesn’t reveal is the intent behind the different tone. Is HBO shooting for more mass appeal for Girls? Is it just an organic move to happiness for the characters? We don’t know, but we will soon enough.

No premiere date set yet, but rest assured, it’s “coming soon.”

Every week’s a different topic, and in light of the approaching holiday season, he got together some comedy heavyweights to skewer Lowe’s, Home Depot, OSH, and those other gargantuan home improvement stores.

The whole thing kicks off with a discussion of OSH’s use of robots to assist customers, and the conceit gets funnier from there.

In case you were worried that the cast of Game of Thrones might pull a Big Bang Theory and just storm off-set until the producers dumped buckets of money on their heads…you can rest easy for two years.

It’s being reported that the sprawling cast of the sprawling show has struck a deal to make them the richest cable actors today. I don’t know exactly what that means or who is treated to such lavish compensation, but it puts me at ease. We do know that the cast was broken up into tiers, and that the “A” tier consisted of your usual Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau-types. Sad to see the Eunuch didn’t make the cut, but that’s life, I guess.

The good news is that the show is constantly saving money by killing off its highest-paid stars, so there’s always a budget line item looking to be reallocated to a giant headcrushing man or a young girl with a tiny, awesome sword.

In Crime, Michael K. Williams will play Frankie, an incarcerated gang leader who still has his finger on the button when it comes to criminal activity in the NYC area.

Crime will be a broad look at the goings-on of the criminal underworld with a similar depth to The Wire, but with far fewer distractions like newspapers, politics, teachers, and stevedores. FAR FEWER STEVEDORES. It will be an eight-hour miniseries, which will air sometime in 2015.

Do you like The Wire? Of course you do! What a silly question that was! Because you like (love?) The Wire, you’re going to be extremely interested in this hour-and-twenty-minute video that features a reunion of some of the biggest names on the show, both actors and producers. Normally, we wouldn’t be satisfied with just “some” of the biggest names, but The Wire had dozens and dozens and dozens of compelling characters, so we’ll give them a pass for just getting a handful onstage.

Anyway, it’s really great to see the cast together again, and it’s also great to see the actors as themselves, rather than their characters. If only because a reunion of The Wire CHARACTERS would be a terrifying thing.

Writer and director Lena Duhnam hopes to soon take her attention away from Girls (temporarily) to adapt a screenplay from and direct a film version of the Newberry Award-winning book Catherine, Called Birdy. There’s a lot of information in that previous sentence, so take a moment if you need one.

Better? Good.

Catherine, Called Birdy is the story of a 12 year-old, living in the 120o’s, and it follows her diary’s stories of the girl scaring off suitors. *nods politely* Dunham jokes that she”just needs to find someone who wants to fund a PG-13 medieval movie.” Hmm. That’s sort of a tall order. Considering movies from that era largely don’t exist and it could be moved to any other time period at less cost. But, Dunham’s got some cred as an auteur, so don’t be surprised if someone steps up to make this weird dream a reality. In the interim, for Dunham haters and lovers alike, here she is falling off a bike. (Variety)

If you’re going to make a series about the life of a rock n’ roll band these days, Foo Fighters are a pretty good candidate for a subject. The band is arguably the most popular pure rock band in the world, and lead singer Dave Grohl has both a storied past and a very good on-screen presence. With those weapons in their arsenal HBO and Grohl bring us a longgggggg trailer for Sonic Highways, the documentary of the Foo Fighters recording eight songs in eight cities for an album of the same name.

Each episode brings us a new city and a new song. Pretty good idea for a documentary series. In the band’s travels, they converse with local talent such as Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Chuck D, LL Cool J, Mike D, Bonnie Raitt, Slash, Gary Clark Jr. and Joan Jett.

The trailer looks like the network and Grohl got it right. Take a look.

Gone Girl hasn’t even made it to theaters yet, and already David Fincher is on to the next project. Who does he think he is? Some sort of talented professional director who can just hop from job to job?

Apparently so, as the esteemed noir-ish auteur has signed up for not just an episode, not just a pilot, but the whole first season of directing HBO’s Utopia. I wasn’t familiar with this show or its premise, so the A.V. Club offerd this quick synopsis along with the news that Fincher would be signing up for a lot more than expected:

“Utopia follows a group of people who discover an obscure graphic novel that predicts major disasters, only to find themselves tracked by a shadowy agency.”

Ok. Sure. It’s got Fincher in it, so I could read any plot overview with a smile. Fincher had always been set to write the series, but now he’s gonna direct a lot as well, more than the two episodes he did for House of Cards for Netflix.

No word on timing, but, hopefully…soon.

He’s spending some time on Broadway, and is notorious for putting out the show on his own schedule, ignoring the pleas of his fan base.

BUT, this isn’t a “no.” David said publicly, ““I feel bad that I don’t have shows for them, and I haven’t given up the hope,” so while we may not be getting any new awkwardness soon, we may get some in the VERY distant future.

Variety actually gives a pretty fun rundown of the chat, which featured attendees giving him positive heckles, asking him to follow them back on Twitter, and a bunch of other inane shit that would drive HBO Larry David crazy.

After news this weekend that, yes, Colin Farrell is going to star in the next season of True Detective, just like was reported months ago, word comes down from the mountaintop that Vince “Schlubmeister” Vaughn will be brushing Dorito crumbs off his shirt to star in the series as well.

2/3 of the prophecy has been fulfilled, and now we await word that the third person to be rumored to star, Taylor Kitsch, has signed on. We’re almost there! Just one left, guys!

Vaughn will be playing Frank Semyon, which is a good name, but no Rust Cohle. An inferior name will not prevent me from making “flat circle” jokes at EVERY. DAMN. TURN. so just bear with me for the duration of the run of the show, please.

In summary, still outstanding are the Kitsch announcement and breaking the news to the many women who are in contention for the female lead. It’s going to be a difficult decision, but only one actress will have the privilege of becoming a flat circle for the HBO drama.

Over the past six months, we’ve gotten a lot of rumors regarding casting choices for the sophomore season of True Detective, and not a lot of confirmation. We were initially told to look for Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch, and Colin Farrell as the male leads, although only Farrell has confirmed.

We’ve also been advised that every woman in the world is being considered for the female lead. Ok. Not EVERY woman, but a lot of them.

In case you wanted to hear the words straight from the Irishman’s mouth, he said to Ireland‘s Sunday World, “I’m doing the second series. I’m so excited.” Pretty black-and-white.

Less clear is the fate of the other stars that had been mentioned. Farrell was mum on any other participation, so the jury is still out, though when one domino falls, the rest are sure to follow, especially given the amount of time they’ve had to put a deal together.

It seems to be the consensus that there will be four leads, so whenever Nic Pizzolatto wants to get around to announcing the other ones…that would be great.

Think you are on top of the True Detective season 2 casting news? THE F*CK YOU ARE! HBO decided to show you how little you know about what’s going on with True Detective‘s casting by throwing no less than seven new names into the mix for the female leads, according to The Wrap.

Thought that Mad Men‘s Elizabeth Moss was a sure thing? YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT. We’ve also got Rachel McAdams, who was mentioned earlier (didn’t pick up on that one, did ya, college boy?), Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Rosario Dawson, Brit Marling, Oona Chaplin, Jaimie Alexander, and Kelly Reilly. I only know who the first three are, but my curiosity is not enough to start Googling random actresses that only have an 11 or so percent chance of getting the part. I’m a busy man.

The broad characteristics of the actresses on this list lead us to believe that no one involved with the show has any idea what they’re doing, and they probably just highlighted these names in on a back issue of USWeekly they were thumbing through at the gynecologist’s office.

(The casting director is a woman in this scenario.)

HBO, never one to let a week go by without getting us fired up about a potential new series or two, has given us a big tease this week: A crime show set in the 1950′s, all noir-ish, from literary genre master James Ellroy and regular ole’ badass director David Fincher.

Talks are preliminary, but they are talking, which is something. And if we all start talking abouttheir talks, this thing will probably take off. So get it trending on Friendster. Fincher has (unsurprisingly) long been a fan of Ellroy, and Ellroy has been a sometimes-fan of HBO, having praised Deadwood, but calling The Wire “bullshit.”

You have to love a guy who calls The Wire “bullshit.” Seriously. You must love him!

No more information is floating around, but this should be enough for us to assume that the show would be terrific.

Despite all the hard work that went into animating the map of Westeros, the Internet can’t get enough of re-envisioning the Game Of Thrones opening credits. We’ve seen the cheesy ’80s version and the crappy ’90s version and the singing goats version. Today brings the swinging ’60s Saul Bass-inspired opening. We won’t have a ’70s version until footage surfaces of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau wearing a velour jumpsuit.

HBO and Martin Scorsese must be pretty happy with the arrangement they have, because they keep getting back together. Scorsese was the executive producer and pilot director behind Boardwalk Empire, and now he’s pulling the same detail on the untitled upcoming rock series he’s doing with Mick Jagger.

And know, he’s revisiting the setting of his 2010 film Shutter Island to bring us Ashecliffe, which is the name of the asylum that resides on Shutter Island. The 13-episode season will begin before the events of the film, but in the same setting.

There’s no reason to believe that Shutter Island star and frequent Scorsese collaborator Leo DiCaprio will star in this, other than the fact that he and Scorsese do EVERYTHING together. Only time will tell.

Now that the dust has settled around HBO’s Girls, the program has sort of become just another show on TV. Which probably isn’t great for ratings, so in a move to shake things up, the show is sending Hannah to the University of Iowa to become a grad student.

In this trailer, we see Hannah pleasantly riding a bike, then, in typically Hannah fashion, crashing it and eating shit. As she lays lifeless, we see the filming crew emerge yelling “Ms. Dunham” as they swap Dunham out for a stunt double. It’s all a bit too much to want to read into, so I’m not gonna.

TL; DR: Girls is coming back in early 2015, Hannah is in Iowa, and that’s that.

After seven weeks of getting our hopes up with spikes of action, then letting them simmer with 120 minutes of restless boredom between them, HBO has decided that, year, they’re going to keep doing that to us with The Leftovers. Because it’s been picked up for a second season (in case that roundabout criticism wasn’t clear).

Ratings for the post-rapture study of a small town started off fine, but have been growing across all platforms despite the fact that the show keeps testing viewers’ patience for SOMETHING to happen, just as patiences were tested producer Damon Lindelof‘s previous TV event, Lost.

No word yet on timing, but barring something weird, I think expecting the show back in about 10 months should be about right. In the meantime, just enjoy the silence and cigarette smoke.

Who told Larry David it was ok to put his day job on the back burner to pursue new professional challenges? Ws it you? Because it’s SCREWING EVERYTHING UP.

Two days ago, it was announced that the Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm braintrust was heading to Broadway to star in a play about a death in the family called Fish in the Dark. Fine, whatever. Give something to the NYC tourists.

Welp, today it’s announced that with a March 5th premiere, and who knows how long the thing will run, David won’t be thinking about new Curb episodes until he’s shed this obligation. That’s bad, and it means it could be 18 months or so until we see his charming visage on TV. This isn’t the first delay in filming of the HBO comedy, and we can take solace in hoping that as long as he gets to set production of the show around his own schedule, he won’t have an excuse to ever stop doing it.

Originally there were rumors that True Detective’s second season would feature two female leads. And then four leads. And now one of those leads could be Elisabeth Moss, who is indeed a female. And also an inspired choice.

She recently wrapped filming the final season of Mad Men, which would free her up to act all sulky and be puzzled by the occult on HBO. If the deal goes through, Moss will play Ani Bezzerides, a Monterey sheriff whose past troubles leave her wrestling with gambling and alcohol. She’s one of three cops investigating the brutal murder of a corrupt city manager whose body has been found along a stretch of highway with satanic symbols carved into his chest. Cases with satanic symbols are the most difficult to solve, as we learned in season one. If anyone’s up for the task, it’s the woman who figured out how to sell lipstick to other women. Although Clear History kinda sucked balls, HBO has announced they’ll once again dip their toe in comedy feature waters with 7 Days in Hell, a Wimbledon mockumentary written by the co-executive producer of Girls. It will star Andy Samberg as a cocky badboy of tennis and Game of Thrones’s Kit Harrington as his humble rival as they face each other for a seven-day match at the famous tennis tournament. Fueling this rivalry is Karen Gillan as the supermodel that comes between them.

Beyond those roles, it looks like HBO is going the ensemble route again. The film also stars Nebraska brosefs Will Forte and June Squib, Michael Sheen, Fred Armisen, Mary Steenburgen, Soledad O’Brien, Howie Mandel, and Girls star Lena Dunham because it would probably get awkward in the HBO cafeteria if they hadn’t.

The film will look something like this:

In case you needed more proof that the days of TV being a dumping ground for washed-up movie stars are over, take a look at True Detective, then at HBO’s upcoming pilot Westworld. The new series, if picked up will star no less than Anthony Hopkins and noted Marilyn Manson-dater Evan Rachel Wood.

Westworld is a serial adaptation of a 1973 film written by Jurrassic Park’s Michael Crichton. The film was set at an amusement park, but I’m thinking over the course of the series, they may need to leave the amusement park now and again. J.J. Abrams Bad Robot studios is producing, because that’s what they do.

Hopkins will play the chairman of the park, and Wood will play a farm girl who discovers her life is a painfully constructed lie.

Sounds like an HBO show, all right!

The rumors that Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch have been cast as two of the four leads in the second season of True Detective have neither been confirmed or denied by the powers at HBO, but there are some new plot details that may be legitimate.

Film Divider has descriptions of the leads as well as the skeletons in their closets. It’s reported that the Farrell and Kitsch characters would team up with a female Monterey sheriff who is struggling with drinking and gambling problems. Farrell’s character has issues with cocaine and anger management (he’s a shoe-in) and the younger character is actually a member of the California Highway Patrol who has been suspended for sexually exploiting a young woman he pulled over.

The plot itself may include a dash of the occult but mainly centers around a corrupt transportation deal:

The new mystery is to be kickstarted by the murder of Ray Caspar, City Manager of a fictional Californian city. From what I can gather, the new, partly invented map that Pizzolatto is drawing will be essential to his new story. As he teased, some months ago, part of the mystery will involve California’s transportation systems. This plot will involve a corrupt scheme to link North and South California with a high speed train, all in pursuit of profitable land ownership and lucrative federal grants.

It’s also reported that the story will take place in the modern day. It remains to be seen how the time period will impact the character’s hairstyles.

As speculation over season 2 casting reached a fever pitch on Twitter with wacky pairings a few months back, the direction of the next series of True Detective episodes has slowly developed. There will reportedly be three leads, two men and a woman, and their casting is slowly becoming clearer.

Colin Farrell is in “deep” discussions for a lead role, and hearthrob Taylor Kitsch is apparently also in the mix for the other male lead, though it doesn’t sound like his casting is as certain. Both Christian Bale and Jessica Chastain had been approached about starring, but their schedules couldn’t accommodate a TV show.

So we get Colin Farrell, probably Taylor Kitsch, and a woman to be named later. Huh. That should work ok.
