HBO, never one to let a week go by without getting us fired up about a potential new series or two, has given us a big tease this week: A crime show set in the 1950′s, all noir-ish, from literary genre master James Ellroy and regular ole’ badass director David Fincher.

Talks are preliminary, but they are talking, which is something. And if we all start talking abouttheir talks, this thing will probably take off. So get it trending on Friendster. Fincher has (unsurprisingly) long been a fan of Ellroy, and Ellroy has been a sometimes-fan of HBO, having praised Deadwood, but calling The Wire “bullshit.”

You have to love a guy who calls The Wire “bullshit.” Seriously. You must love him!

No more information is floating around, but this should be enough for us to assume that the show would be terrific.

Despite all the hard work that went into animating the map of Westeros, the Internet can’t get enough of re-envisioning the Game Of Thrones opening credits. We’ve seen the cheesy ’80s version and the crappy ’90s version and the singing goats version. Today brings the swinging ’60s Saul Bass-inspired opening. We won’t have a ’70s version until footage surfaces of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau wearing a velour jumpsuit.

HBO and Martin Scorsese must be pretty happy with the arrangement they have, because they keep getting back together. Scorsese was the executive producer and pilot director behind Boardwalk Empire, and now he’s pulling the same detail on the untitled upcoming rock series he’s doing with Mick Jagger.

And know, he’s revisiting the setting of his 2010 film Shutter Island to bring us Ashecliffe, which is the name of the asylum that resides on Shutter Island. The 13-episode season will begin before the events of the film, but in the same setting.

There’s no reason to believe that Shutter Island star and frequent Scorsese collaborator Leo DiCaprio will star in this, other than the fact that he and Scorsese do EVERYTHING together. Only time will tell.

Now that the dust has settled around HBO’s Girls, the program has sort of become just another show on TV. Which probably isn’t great for ratings, so in a move to shake things up, the show is sending Hannah to the University of Iowa to become a grad student.

In this trailer, we see Hannah pleasantly riding a bike, then, in typically Hannah fashion, crashing it and eating shit. As she lays lifeless, we see the filming crew emerge yelling “Ms. Dunham” as they swap Dunham out for a stunt double. It’s all a bit too much to want to read into, so I’m not gonna.

TL; DR: Girls is coming back in early 2015, Hannah is in Iowa, and that’s that.

After seven weeks of getting our hopes up with spikes of action, then letting them simmer with 120 minutes of restless boredom between them, HBO has decided that, year, they’re going to keep doing that to us with The Leftovers. Because it’s been picked up for a second season (in case that roundabout criticism wasn’t clear).

Ratings for the post-rapture study of a small town started off fine, but have been growing across all platforms despite the fact that the show keeps testing viewers’ patience for SOMETHING to happen, just as patiences were tested producer Damon Lindelof‘s previous TV event, Lost.

No word yet on timing, but barring something weird, I think expecting the show back in about 10 months should be about right. In the meantime, just enjoy the silence and cigarette smoke.

Who told Larry David it was ok to put his day job on the back burner to pursue new professional challenges? Ws it you? Because it’s SCREWING EVERYTHING UP.

Two days ago, it was announced that the Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm braintrust was heading to Broadway to star in a play about a death in the family called Fish in the Dark. Fine, whatever. Give something to the NYC tourists.

Welp, today it’s announced that with a March 5th premiere, and who knows how long the thing will run, David won’t be thinking about new Curb episodes until he’s shed this obligation. That’s bad, and it means it could be 18 months or so until we see his charming visage on TV. This isn’t the first delay in filming of the HBO comedy, and we can take solace in hoping that as long as he gets to set production of the show around his own schedule, he won’t have an excuse to ever stop doing it.

Originally there were rumors that True Detective’s second season would feature two female leads. And then four leads. And now one of those leads could be Elisabeth Moss, who is indeed a female. And also an inspired choice.

She recently wrapped filming the final season of Mad Men, which would free her up to act all sulky and be puzzled by the occult on HBO. If the deal goes through, Moss will play Ani Bezzerides, a Monterey sheriff whose past troubles leave her wrestling with gambling and alcohol. She’s one of three cops investigating the brutal murder of a corrupt city manager whose body has been found along a stretch of highway with satanic symbols carved into his chest. Cases with satanic symbols are the most difficult to solve, as we learned in season one. If anyone’s up for the task, it’s the woman who figured out how to sell lipstick to other women. Although Clear History kinda sucked balls, HBO has announced they’ll once again dip their toe in comedy feature waters with 7 Days in Hell, a Wimbledon mockumentary written by the co-executive producer of Girls. It will star Andy Samberg as a cocky badboy of tennis and Game of Thrones’s Kit Harrington as his humble rival as they face each other for a seven-day match at the famous tennis tournament. Fueling this rivalry is Karen Gillan as the supermodel that comes between them.

Beyond those roles, it looks like HBO is going the ensemble route again. The film also stars Nebraska brosefs Will Forte and June Squib, Michael Sheen, Fred Armisen, Mary Steenburgen, Soledad O’Brien, Howie Mandel, and Girls star Lena Dunham because it would probably get awkward in the HBO cafeteria if they hadn’t.

In case you needed more proof that the days of TV being a dumping ground for washed-up movie stars are over, take a look at True Detective, then at HBO’s upcoming pilot Westworld. The new series, if picked up will star no less than Anthony Hopkins and noted Marilyn Manson-dater Evan Rachel Wood.

Westworld is a serial adaptation of a 1973 film written by Jurrassic Park’s Michael Crichton. The film was set at an amusement park, but I’m thinking over the course of the series, they may need to leave the amusement park now and again. J.J. Abrams Bad Robot studios is producing, because that’s what they do.

Hopkins will play the chairman of the park, and Wood will play a farm girl who discovers her life is a painfully constructed lie.

Sounds like an HBO show, all right!

The rumors that Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch have been cast as two of the four leads in the second season of True Detective have neither been confirmed or denied by the powers at HBO, but there are some new plot details that may be legitimate.

Film Divider has descriptions of the leads as well as the skeletons in their closets. It’s reported that the Farrell and Kitsch characters would team up with a female Monterey sheriff who is struggling with drinking and gambling problems. Farrell’s character has issues with cocaine and anger management (he’s a shoe-in) and the younger character is actually a member of the California Highway Patrol who has been suspended for sexually exploiting a young woman he pulled over.

The plot itself may include a dash of the occult but mainly centers around a corrupt transportation deal:

The new mystery is to be kickstarted by the murder of Ray Caspar, City Manager of a fictional Californian city. From what I can gather, the new, partly invented map that Pizzolatto is drawing will be essential to his new story. As he teased, some months ago, part of the mystery will involve California’s transportation systems. This plot will involve a corrupt scheme to link North and South California with a high speed train, all in pursuit of profitable land ownership and lucrative federal grants.

It’s also reported that the story will take place in the modern day. It remains to be seen how the time period will impact the character’s hairstyles.

As speculation over season 2 casting reached a fever pitch on Twitter with wacky pairings a few months back, the direction of the next series of True Detective episodes has slowly developed. There will reportedly be three leads, two men and a woman, and their casting is slowly becoming clearer.

Colin Farrell is in “deep” discussions for a lead role, and hearthrob Taylor Kitsch is apparently also in the mix for the other male lead, though it doesn’t sound like his casting is as certain. Both Christian Bale and Jessica Chastain had been approached about starring, but their schedules couldn’t accommodate a TV show.

So we get Colin Farrell, probably Taylor Kitsch, and a woman to be named later. Huh. That should work ok.

My feeling is that Game of Thrones should not be allowed to take breaks between seasons. It’s a show that we all want so badly that it should just be on all year-round because any hiatus is too painful. While he doesn’t completely agree with my extreme plan, George R. R. Martin knows where I’m coming from.

Martin took another writing break to sit down with the NY Times and discuss the phenomenon born from beneath his sea captain hat. He also spoke about how a larger episode order would improve the HBO series. “With 13 episodes, we could include smaller scenes that we had to cut, scenes that make the story deeper and richer.” Hopefully those scenes wouldn’t be two people walking around Belfast. We have plenty of those scenes already.

It’s good to know that even the author of Game of Thrones and it’s ancillary books gets confused sometime. George R.R. Martin, who has been doing God knows what instead of writing those damn books, had originally planned to do one book for each of the seven kingdoms. But then, for reasons that we can’t really ascertain, having not read all of the antecedent books, there’s an eighth kingdom.

So that means, under Martin’s current bizarre sense of obligation to every kingdom, an eighth book. Which means the series goes on.

Normally, this would be welcome news, but the fact that Martin is 65 years old and not a picture of health means that it just increases the likelihood the guy could die before finishing the story, as HBO is burning through the books at about a rate of one per season.

Maybe, turn the last few into a graphic novel, George?

The FCC comments page went down on Monday morning following the viral distribution of Sunday night’s Last Week Tonight bit in which John Oliver basically implored people to take action. Of course, the FCC, never one to let on to any one source of influence, has stated that the site was down due to high traffic volume, but it wasnt’ sure if John Oliver‘s show was the cause of that volume.

I’m here to help. Yes. It was the sole cause. Don’t be stupid or coy, FCC.

I mean, Oliver went on a long rant about the problem at hand and simply put up the FCC comment page URL with no fancy graphics or jokes. He wanted people to reach out, and after the video went viral (800,000 or so vies as of press time), they did.

In case you missed it, here it is. Get to writin’ to your FCC.

It’s been a season full of jaw-dropping moments on Game of Thrones and the next episode looks like it will not disappoint in this regard. Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff tease that when Oberyn Martell takes on The Mountain in the upcoming Ass-Handing In King’s Landing, it will be the show’s best combat sequence.

“It’s the culmination of 20 years of anger and hatred and thirst for vengeance coming to a head in this amazing set piece that [stunt coordinator Paul Herbert and swordmaster C.C. Smiff] have put together. The fight delivers beyond our expectations.” In other words, lots of kicking and flipping.

Lest you think that the concept of rebooting or serializing a tedious, familiar property is only the purview of comic book studios, think again. It’s been announced that Tom Hanks is producing a sequel to the surprise indie hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding for HBO films, and most of the players are returning.

Nia Vardalos will once again write and star, John Corbett is coming back because he was available, and Hanks and wife Rita Wilson will be producing.

According to Vardalos, a “bigger, fatter” wedding will take place in which a family secret is revealed. BUT WILL IT BE GREEKER?

Unless the secret is about buried treasure, I’m not interested.

The best news about this sequel is that, whether we asked for it or not, it’s likely that Joey Fatone will be shoehorned back into our lives like it’s 2001, if only for 90 minutes or so.

Welcome back, Joey. We missed you. Send our regards to Chris and J.C.

The post The Next Season Of ‘True Detective’ Will Have Three Leads, Be Set In California appeared first on Screen Junkies.

While not much is known about the forthcoming second season of HBO’s breakout hit True Detective, creator Nick Pizzolatto has dropped a few bombs of truth on fans. For one, there will be three completely new leads, lest you thought Harrelson and McConaughey would reprise their roles.

Those leads have not been cast yet, but there are plenty of suggestions out there. Pizzolatto said casting will begin “in earnest” in a few weeks.

Secondly, the show is moving to a totally new eerie setting in California. But not LA or San Fran. NOT EVEN ORANGE COUNTY. It’s going to take place in lesser-known (read: creepier) areas of CA, hopefully replicating the quiet discomfort that we were able to get from Louisiana last season.

And that’s pretty much all that’s known at this point. Let’s take a breath so we can get all fired up when they announce the leads.

Bill Hader, best known for his portrayal of the pan-sexual weirdo club kid Stefon on SNL, will be taking his talents to HBO to “create and star in a new comedy.”

So there.

Hader has kept busy since leaving the sketch comedy show, appearing in the upcoming IFC series American Documentary, Judd Apatow‘s Trainwreck, David Wain‘s They Came Together, and Skeleton Twins. Better add a full time starring and showrunning role in a TV series to that slate, Billy.

No details are given, but we’re guessing that HBO is still in damage mode after what they did to us a year ago with The Red Wedding. We need to laugh. Oh, how we need to laugh.

In case you’re wondering if HBO is going to run out of Sunday to air their shows…probably. But they’ll probably just make more, or have government stop work on all Mondays so that Mondays are Sundays, and Sundays are some other new day that’s also really good for HBO.

I haven’t worked out all the details yet.

The post Gillian Jacobs To Hop From ‘Community’ To ‘Girls’ For Season 4 appeared first on Screen Junkies.

Well, if Allison Brie can do Mad Men, then Gillian Jacobs deserves a prestige show to join, too. And that show will be HBO’s Girls. After news that Community has been cancelled, the cast been filing their unemployment and seeking work elsewhere. It appears that Lena Dunham is hiring.

Jacobs won’t appear until episode five as Mimi-Rose, which is also the name of that episode. So it’s probably more than a cameo. From there, Gillian will stick around, though it’s unknown how big a part she’ll play. Maybe just watch the damn show, ok? Do you need to know everything ahead of time? IT’S ABOUT THE JOURNEY. GOD!

Donald Glover took a controversial turn in the early episodes of season 2 as Hannah‘s boyfriend, ostensibly to combat criticism that the show lacked diversity. However, his appearance was so fleeting and inconsequential that all it did was fan the flames further.

Maybe Gillian Jacobs is joining because people complained there weren’t enough white girls being represented.

HBO, never one to limit the network to any specific genre continues to explore the world of sports that it first shot at (and failed) with Arli$$. Now, the network is prepping a documentary on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a guy who probably could have used a nickname during his career, if only for the sake of sportswriters everywhere.

(And no, I’m not recognizing “Captain Skyhook” as a nickname.)

In addition to being one of the leading scorers and greatest basketball players of all time, Kareem was on the front lines of the civil rights fight for most of his playing days, and then branched out from basketball with acting and a friendship with Bruce Lee later in his career.

Pretty cool stuff that HBO has to work with.

Considering it will be a documentary, we don’t get to try to guess who would play the towering 7-foot athlete, though I’m sure Kevin Hart would be at the top of everyone’s list.

Lest you think True Blood was just going to run out the clock in its final season, perhaps with the main characters on a porch somewhere, drinking sweet tea and looking back on what a crazy few years it’s been, think again.

Like an out-of-control train filled with breasts, overt homoeroticism, and gore, True Blood keeps speeding towards the finish line, adding something we didn’t even know it needed: a Japanese cowboy.

Why? Because it’s True Blood, and they don’t answer to you. That’s why. Will Yun Lee of The Wolverine will play Mr. Gus come June 22nd when the final season returns.

HBO Is Killing It With Their Sunday Night Lineup Right Now http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/hbo-is-killing-it-with-their-sunday-night-lineup-right-now/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/hbo-is-killing-it-with-their-sunday-night-lineup-right-now/#comments Tue, 06 May 2014 15:42:57 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=261471 Sunday night belongs to HBO. Not legally, of course. But figuratively.

The post HBO Is Killing It With Their Sunday Night Lineup Right Now appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
While it’s no surprise that HBO has rolled out some pretty strong television in Veep, Silicon Valley, and, of course, Game of Thrones, it seems that the lineup is translating into some of the best ratings the network has ever seen for its original series.

Game of Thrones is up about 25% from where it was last year, Veep is up 17% over last year, and Silicon Valley, which doesn’t have a previous season to compare against, has carried about 5.4 million viewers per episode, which…sounds like a lot.

While these numbers are impressive, the fact they’re on a network that requires not only cable service, but an additional premium subscription that costs more than Netflix makes them downright gaudy.

Of course, this is arguably the best face that HBO can put forward, considering that their drama lineup is pretty weak these days outside Game of Thrones. But enough about that. Let’s stay positive and just be happy that some good television is experiencing success. Hopefully at the expense of some singing competition or something.

Up until seeing this trailer for HBO’s dramatic new series The Leftovers, I had assumed the storyline revolved around Justin Theroux taking down an entire lasagna over four days. I was wrong.

Based on the novel by Tom Perrotta, The Leftovers imagines a world where 2% of the population simply vanish, leaving everyone else to grieve and contemplate their own existence. Damon Lindelof is helming the series and it looks to be fitting material for him. After all, he did allow so many mysteries and plot points to simply vanish from LOST.
