The show, so far untitled, has a murderer’s row of comedians, including T.J. Miller, Thomas Middleditch, Josh Brener, Lindsey Broad, Christopher Evan Welch, Amanda Crew, Angela Trimbur, ZachWoods and Kumail Nanjiani. But those guys will be pretty funny!

The tagline that has been bandied about here is “the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success.” Ugh. That describes every Aaron Sorkin project ever. Of course, it’s Mike Judge, so we needn’t worry.

You know, staplers, and whatnot.

HBO Renews ‘Veep’ Because ‘Veep’ Is Amazing And Funny http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-renews-veep-because-veep-is-amazing-and-funny/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-renews-veep-because-veep-is-amazing-and-funny/#comments Wed, 01 May 2013 21:56:17 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254677 After pulling down series high numbers possibly due to audience enlightenment (somewhat likely) and/or that sick Game of Thrones lead-in (extremely likely), Veep has gotten the ole’ renewal from HBO, affording us another season with Selena and her political gang that can’t shoot straight.

May I editorialize?

Thank you.

Veep is perhaps the funniest half-hour of TV on…TV. You know how people like funny shows that offer up a lot of heart as well? Those people didn’t like this show because this show hadn’t shown any heart. Until the last episode which offered an ending that leads the audience to believe that Selina Meyer MIGHT care about the decisions she makes, and her political career isn’t just one giant game.

While the show serves as a pretty bleak vantage point of contemporary politics, it doesn’t have to. You CAN just like the show because it’s a bunch of inept, weird people cursing at each other and their fun idiosyncrasies.

I promise no more editorializing for ten days, at least.

Ringling Brothers Not Thrilled With HBO’s Doc On Elephant Abuse http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/ringling-brothers-not-thrilled-with-hbos-doc-on-elephant-abuse/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/ringling-brothers-not-thrilled-with-hbos-doc-on-elephant-abuse/#comments Mon, 22 Apr 2013 21:43:08 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254513 HBO has in its pipeline a documentary called An Apology to Elephants. Oof. Just judging from that title, you can tell this thing won’t be friendly to a firm that uses elephant for entertainment purposes.

And judging by Ringling Bros claims that the HBO doc is “one-sided,” you would be totally correct. Variety is reporting that HBO initially wished to discuss with Feld, the parent company of the circus, their involvement in both conservation, as well as the use of elephants in their circus. However, they later scrapped that plan, telling Feld that they didn’t want to focus on the conservation issue, presumably just the nasty stuff.

The circus spokesman claimed that HBO may “clearly have an anti-circus political agenda.”

But where do they stand on capades, both ice and regular?

‘Game Of Thrones’ Renewed For A Fourth Season http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/game-of-thrones-renewed-for-a-fourth-season/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/game-of-thrones-renewed-for-a-fourth-season/#comments Tue, 02 Apr 2013 21:55:34 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254229 Game Of Thrones brought a record amount of viewers to HBO with its third season premiere this past Sunday, so it comes as no surprise that the show has been picked up for a fourth season. The next 10 episode order will premiere in 2014 and follow the storylines from the second half of A Storm Of Swords. I’m not familiar with the books so please don’t tell me whether or not it actually rains swords. Because what could be more thrilling than a sword fight while it’s also raining swords? Think about it, if you drop your sword you could just snatch one out of the air and go on fighting. Matter of fact, I’m starting my spec script right now. (THR)

George R.R. Martin Is Considering A ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel Series http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/george-r-r-martin-is-considering-a-game-of-thrones-prequel-series/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/george-r-r-martin-is-considering-a-game-of-thrones-prequel-series/#comments Mon, 25 Mar 2013 14:26:41 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254132 In news that will make casual fans’s nose begin to bleed, Game of Thrones creator, in an effort to create the most intricate the world in the history of man-made art, has hinted that he’ll be creating a prequel series, using a handful of novelas that he’s written, then adding “nine or ten more” (you know, no big deal) to create a backstory for all the characters that we are really invested enough in without further backstory.

While this sounds like a big burden, it might be the best possible use of the author’s time since signing a new development deal with HBO. Since he’s admitted he’s about 3,000 or so pages away (for reals) from completing A Song of Fire and Ice, any project that he’s got a head start on is probably ideal, rather than one that he’s starting from scratch.

Maybe he’ll harken all the way back to the time that Eddard Stark had a head.

Creator George R. R. Martin has snagged himself a cameo role in the third season according to executive producer David Benioff. Although he wouldn’t spoil the fun by just telling us where Martin would pop up. Instead he teased, “You will see him.”

Will we see him tortured? Will he be a sellsword?? A rival eunuch??? Luckily, we here at Screen Junkies have some pull in the industry and have scored an exclusive still of Martin’s appearance.

Makes a lot of sense. (Deadline)

Ellin ostensibly has a script done, that he wrote, because who knows the intricacies of guys named Turtle, Vinnie, E, and Johnny Drama more than the deft scribe that birthed them? No one, that’s who.

I hope they are an efficient crew, because there’s a very narrow window in which the team will be able to shoot those scenes where the sun is setting (the magic hour, if you will) over a Malibu beach house deck, with the characters toasting their good fortune as Medellin 2 gets a really good distribution deal in foreign markets.

HBO To Brings Us Some More ‘Girls’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-to-brings-us-some-more-girls/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-to-brings-us-some-more-girls/#comments Fri, 25 Jan 2013 21:51:17 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=253120 If pop-culture pervasion translated to ratings, then Girls would probably be competing with a long line of Super Bowls for the most-watched programs ever. We all know that’s not the case, but relevance and critical acclaim is enough for HBO to pull the trigger on season three after only a few episodes into season 2. Girls can’t cost the network all that much, so it’s a low-risk proposition that garners lots and lots of hipster goodwill to balance out all that Game of Thrones fanboy love.

Production is slated to start in March. No premiere date or range has been announced.

But what this all really means is that we’re going to see Lena Dunham‘s naked body about 700 more times in late 2013/early 204.

God Votes ‘No’ On Prop Joe http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/god-votes-no-on-prop-joe/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/god-votes-no-on-prop-joe/#comments Sat, 19 Jan 2013 00:21:33 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=253018 It is with a heavy heart that I inform our readership that Robert F. Chew, the actor who blessed The Wire fans with the endlessly quotable and imitable Prop Joe, has died of heart failure at the age of 52.

Distasteful wordplay and line-dropping aside. Chew’s amazingly restrained performance as Prop Joe in the HBO inner-city epic serves as a touchpoint of the brilliance of the program, widely regarded as one of television’s best.

While Robert Chew’s legacy includes turns in David Simon productions Homicide, The Corner, and The Wire, perhaps his greatest work was his effort after achieving success, mentoring Baltimore‘s Arean Players, a troupe of child and young adult actors.

No less than David Simon has high praise for Chew, offering:

“He could have gone to New York or Los Angeles and commanded a lot more work, but he loved the city as his home and chose to remain here working.  He understood so much about his craft that it was no surprise at all that we would go to him to coach our young actors in season four.  He was the conduit through which they internalized their remarkable performances.”

With that quote, we learn that not only was Robert Chew responsible for his own great performance on the show, but also in eliciting the moving performances.

While he was known for his character, I’m sure he was known to many other people as something more. Rest in peace, Prop Joe, you cadaverous motherfucker.

Laughs Unlimited has been ordered by HBO, but it’s seriously about as funny as Two and a Half Men, so don’t let the name fool you.

In the TV show, an Army medic returns home from Afghanistan to find her husband divorcing her and wrestling away custody of their child. I’ll wait for you to stop giggling.

She becomes a cop, but continues to cope with PTSD with her fellow lawmen at a Sacramento comedy club called…that’s right…Laughs Unlimited. If it sounds a bit morose, don’t read the part about it being set in Sacramento again. It truly chills the spine.

The brewery states that the beers will “directly tie into themes, characters, and nuances” of the show, so if your beer tastes like incest or ambition, don’t worry. It’s supposed to taste that way.

Season Two Of HBO’s ‘Girls’ Will Premiere In January, Says Lena Dunham http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/season-two-of-hbos-girls-will-premiere-in-january-says-lena-dunham/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/season-two-of-hbos-girls-will-premiere-in-january-says-lena-dunham/#comments Mon, 15 Oct 2012 19:56:04 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=251482 HBO’s divisive pseudo-hit Girls will be returning to the airwaves on January 13th, 2013. This should be one of the more anticipated premieres of this TV season, if for no other reasons than she got Emmy nods for acting, directing, writing, and the show itself got a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series.

However, with that anticipation comes a number of caveats. Girls may have been the most widely-covered television show of this year, but the ratings didn’t reflect all the attention critics and web denizens paid it, so expect HBO to offer something in the way of accessibility to those who may have been turned off by the whole hipster-Williamsburg setting.

However, Lena Dunham‘s offered up several more diverse characters for season two, leading us to believe that the show may be bending a little bit to find a broader audiences. If we start seeing CGI puppies with attitude in the teasers, we’ll know this is the case.

The book even has a working title: Not That Kind Of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned.

Wow. The word “banal” doesn’t even begin to describe that title. Let’s hope Dunham is able to put some of her charm and wit into another stab at it. It’s not unreasonable to think she’s a younger generation’s Tina Fey as her Hannah is a younger, hipper analog to Fey’s Liz Lemon, so expect to see Dunham expanding her reach to all sorts of outlets to become a media maven.

You know, like a white Oprah that no one hopes to relate to.

Boardwalk Empire Already Given One More Season To Live Up To Its Potential http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/boardwalk-empire-already-given-one-more-season-to-live-up-to-its-potential/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/boardwalk-empire-already-given-one-more-season-to-live-up-to-its-potential/#comments Wed, 03 Oct 2012 16:56:22 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=251270 HBO has finally realized, after paying $50 million on sets, they’ll need to run Boardwalk Empire for like 42 seasons just to break even. So three episodes into season three, they’ve already greenlit season four.

(Before we go any further, can we all just take a second and imagine that the 42 seasons of BWE took erratic Mad Men-like chronological jumps into the future, putting elderly bootleggers smack in the middle of the disco era by the 40th season?)

One more season means further opportunity to either elate viewers by finally turning this into a knock-down, drag-out gangster show or infuriate them by continuing to be all Downton Abbey when it damn well knows it should be a gangster series.

In any event, Boardwalk Empire‘s thoughtful writing and luminous production design at the very least outweighs the cultural damage done by Big Bang Theory, so we should probably all treat this is mildly good news.

We’ve Got The Second Season Premiere Of ‘Homeland’ For You To Watch http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/weve-got-the-first-episode-of-homeland-for-you-to-watch/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/weve-got-the-first-episode-of-homeland-for-you-to-watch/#comments Mon, 01 Oct 2012 21:26:34 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?post_type=video&p=251232 With last season’s finale leaving us with electro-shock therapy and treason of the highest order, last night’s Homeland season two premiere was widely anticipated…by those who had Showtime. Those who didn’t had to wallow in their own envy and self-pity.

Until now.

Taking cues from high school drug dealers the world over, Showtime has magnanimously offered “the first one’s on us,” posting last night’s episode on YouTube so that any yahoo with an Internet connection can watch the show and see what the fuss is about.

Their gesture also allows self-serving websites like Screen Junkies to embed the video in our site, tricking the most gullible readers into thinking that we’re somehow the reason they get to see Homeland for free.

It works out pretty well for everyone.

Enjoy.

HBO, Missing James Gandolfini’s Labored Breathing, Recruits Him For ‘Criminal Justice’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-missing-james-gandolfinis-labored-breathing-recruits-him-for-criminal-justice/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-missing-james-gandolfinis-labored-breathing-recruits-him-for-criminal-justice/#comments Thu, 20 Sep 2012 21:33:35 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=251059 HBO misses their meal ticket, and they’re trying to get him back. After a couple fruitless attempts to wrap their arms back around Tony Soprano, the cable juggernaut has courted the portly thespian for it’s newest pilot. The show is called Criminal Justice, which makes me think that HBO bought the name from a failed CBS pilot starring Jill Hennessy, but whatevskis.

The show is based on a BBC series of the same name which offers up a criminal case, then follows several different characters as they negotiate the legal system. Oh jeez. I hope it’s more interesting than it sounds.

Tony James would play a “disheveled jailhouse lawyer,” and possibly one that walks around in his robe and slippers, offering nothing more than general grunts as he swigs orange juice from the carton and indulges in chilled lunch meats mere minutes after waking up at 11 AM.

Aaron Sorkin Fires All The ‘Newsroom’ Writers, As Though They Were Responsible http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/aaron-sorkin-fires-all-the-newsroom-writers-as-though-they-were-responsible/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/aaron-sorkin-fires-all-the-newsroom-writers-as-though-they-were-responsible/#comments Fri, 20 Jul 2012 21:30:31 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=249924 Four episodes into HBO’s take on Sportsnight, The Newsroom, Aaron Sorkin, like so many of the feisty TV producers he crafts, has decided to shake things up. By firing all the writers on the TV show, save for one, who, suspiciously, has never been seen in the same room as Aaron Sorkin.

Because I’m sure THOSE writers were the ones responsible for the familiar stories, tired cadences, and staid little pecadilloes that peppered the scripts.

Hey! This character has the same name as a famous person! It’s the elephant in the room! Let’s point it out!

He was kind enough not to fire writer Corrine Kinsbury, which were pretty sure is just Aaron Sorkin’s nom de plume.

Ironically, this move, in an effort to shake things up, will probably just raise the Sorkin Levels the show lazily oozes out every Sunday night. Short of finding someone else to write the stories, then bringing in Sorkin to adapt them, punching up dialogue along the way, it seems pretty certain that this is the type of show we‘ll be dealing with as long as he’s involved.

HBO Announced A Movie Based On Fox News, Then Said, “Nah.” http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-announced-a-movie-based-on-fox-news-then-said-nah/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-announced-a-movie-based-on-fox-news-then-said-nah/#comments Fri, 06 Jul 2012 15:33:52 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=249577 Yesterday, news had spread that HBO was working on a film that would document the rise of Fox News, all while painting its fearless leader, Roger Ailes, in a negative light (if you could believe that!).

Well, today execs at HBO woke up with more than a few regrets, claiming that going forward with the project wouldn’t be appropriate, given the network’s ties to CNN. That seems like a bit of a fallacy, considering that the station has long been known to have ties to organized crime, but that didn’t keep them from moving forward with The Sopranos.

I guess this news means that if you want to hear anyone speak ill of Fox News, you’re just going to have to turn to 90% of your friends on Facebook.

Dark times, haters. Dark times indeed.

HBO Apologizes For Putting George W. Bush’s Head On A Spike http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-apologizes-for-putting-george-w-bushs-head-on-a-spike/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-apologizes-for-putting-george-w-bushs-head-on-a-spike/#comments Thu, 14 Jun 2012 16:18:28 +0000 Joseph Gibson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=249235 Even if you’re not a fan of the HBO series Game of Thrones, it’s highly probable that you’ve read or heard about the recent cameo appearance from former President of the United States George W. Bush’s decapitated head – or at least a pretty uncanny facsimile of same.

Just like its living counterpart, the prosthetic George W. Bush head has inspired some pretty passionate emotions, with some conservative groups calling for a boycott of HBO. The people at HBO has responded to these accusations of political bias in a statement: “We were deeply dismayed to see this and find it unacceptable, disrespectful and in very bad taste.”

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the actual people behind Game of Thrones had an even better explanation for putting George W. Bush’s decapitated head on a spike, saying that it wasn’t meant to be a political statement but instead was just a matter of using the means available to them:

“We use a lot of prosthetic body parts on the show: heads, arms, etc. We can’t afford to have these all made from scratch, especially in scenes where we need a lot of them, so we rent them in bulk.”

Despite this explanation, HBO has ordered all images of George W. Bush’s decapitated head removed from future copies of Game of Thrones on DVD, and presumably from future broadcasts. The former president has not been reached for comment. (The AV Club)
