There has long been talk of a Blade Runner sequel, despite the fact that it’s pretty much the perfect science fiction film and should be left alone. Because, hey, people said that about Alien and Aliens, and we got a bunch of crappy sequels from those guys.

In a recent interview, director Ridley Scott indicated that Harrison Ford was “of course” returning, that the script was written and “damn good,” though that might just mean “Prometheus-good,” and that the only real bottleneck was the matter of timing. He did convey that the project would occur sooner than Prometheus 2, which I guess is good because I don’t think many people are in a hurry for Prometheus 2.

Considering the first Blade Runner was based on Philip Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, it’s unclear what the source material will be for the sequel, but I’m guessing it is probably just some Twilight fan-fic like 50 Shades of Grey was.

Check out who's on board so far.

Seems like every week, new cast info emerges — interesting or otherwise — on the upcoming Star Wars trilogy. The production is such nerd enchantment that it makes the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron movie look like a farming documentary. Most fanboys seem pretty content with their high priest J.J. Abrams at the helm, but as can be expected, there’s a boatload of scrutiny in the comments section of any article about the cast.

There’s a lot riding on Star Wars: Episode VII. Abrams and company can either bolster the legacy of the Holy Trilogy (and make folks forget about its far inferior prequel trilogy) or they could pull some Jar-Jar Binks s**t and forever sport the ire of grown men who finished undergrad before ever getting laid.

We’ll all find out next December. Meanwhile, here’s the lowdown on all the confirmed stars so far:

Lupita Nyong’o – Role Unannounced We at Screen Junkies are truly thrilled to see Lupita getting all the props she deserves from her Oscar-winning turn in 12 Years a Slave. But that means nothing if her as-yet-unannounced role is of Jar-Jar Binks’ long-lost offspring. Everyone will come after that Oscar with pitchforks faster than they came after Halle after Catwoman.

Gwendoline Christie - Role Unannounced This is a fantastic hire, since Christie’s Brienne of Tarth is one of the best characters among a lot of great ones on the fantastic Game of Thrones. I hope they don’t douse her in a bunch of makeup for her role, because her face is a commanding presence. She’d be absolutely kick-ass in a lightsaber duel.

John Boyega – Role Unannounced Don’t know much about this guy or if that many people on this side of the pond caught him in any of his four roles to date. Presumably, he was tapped after his performance in British horror-comedy Attack the Block. Check out the funny fan-made scene above of Boyega wielding a lightsaber in place of a bat in a scene from that movie.

Daisy Ridley – Role Unannounced The rumor mill has Ridley, a British television star who could probably sit down in your living room and go unrecognized, as one of the lead characters in the entire trilogy. Daughter of Han and Leia, perhaps? To be plucked from relative obscurity to go to the front of the bus in the most anticipated franchise return in decades? No pressure, dear…

Adam DriverRole Unannounced Perhaps the only part of HBO’s Girls that doesn’t qualify as a hate-watch, Driver’s career has picked up substantially in the last year or so; word is he’s going to be somewhere on the Dark Side of things for Episode VII, which means there’s a decent chance he’ll be defeated by the film’s conclusion and not make it to the rest of the trilogy. Which would be a damn shame.

Oscar Isaac – Role Unannounced This guy came from out of nowhere and blew everyone away with his titular role in the Coen BrothersInside Llewyn Davis from last year. The Star Wars series is not exactly known for its dramatic heft or acting chops (the last trilogy did have Hayden Christensen in a lead role, after all), so I’m excited to see what Isaac brings to the table.

Andy SerkisRole Unannounced If Serkis is involved, that means there will be some serious motion capture work in the new movie. Since everything he touches turns to gold these days, the cred he adds to the series is invaluable.

Domhnall Gleeson – Role Unannounced I would be more excited if his horribly underrated dad Brendan were in the series, but Domhnall showed some interesting promise of a career to come in last year’s About Time. Listen to him explain in his Irish brogue how scared he is of talking about Star Wars at all.

On the next page: A bunch of grizzled veterans and another cute British girl you’ve never heard of.

I’m pretty sure that Star Wars will continue to make casting announcements even after the film hits theaters in December 2015. There is no end to the list of people acting in this film.

So while Harrison Ford’s ankle injury has hamstrung the production for a couple weeks, the producers decided to take that time to do what they do best: Hire more actors. The lucky two who go the nod this time around are American Crystal Clarke and British actor Pip Andersen. Lucky them.

We would discuss and speculate what role they’ll play, but it’s a J.J. Abrams film, which means that none of us have any idea what it will be about anyway, so we’ll just assume that Crystal will sit on Pip’s shoulders and together they will play Chewbacca.

That’s reasonable, right?

Even with the aid of “medicinal” marijuana, Harrison Ford has a long road to recovery after the Millenium Falcon crushed his leg last week. The 71-year-old actor broke his ankle on the Star Wars: Episode VII set when a hydraulic door on the spaceship malfunctioned and fell on him. It’s expected that Han Solo will miss “as many as eight weeks of filming” though his time in traction will not impact the release date of Dec. 18, 2015.

I’m not a doctor or anything but you’d think they’d just strap him to Chewbacca‘s back. (CBC)

Sometimes, I wake up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat, so desperate for Indiana Jones film developments that I’ll believe anything. Like that Bradley Cooper is going to don the fedora next (even though I speak for everyone when I say fedoras are totally done-zo.) Or that Frank Darabont, the guy who was involved with The Walking Dead for about fifteen minutes, is writing a script.

Complete and utter horseshit. All of it. The former has been refuted by Frank Marshall, who has produced all four of the earlier Indiana Jones films.

So HE’S the son of a bitch who snagged the “LeDoctor” Twitter handle out from under me. See you in hell, Marshall.

Then Darabont said to Ain’t It Cool News, “I have not pitched an idea for a proposed Indiana Jones movie, nor has anybody approached me with such an idea. The inaccurate report on Latino Review was the first I’d heard of it.”

But Darabont didn’t use Twitter to make the announcement, so it might as well have been made by a town cryer with a kerosene lamp on a cobblestone street. Luddite.

So let’s all just chill out and keep bitching about Crystal Skull until this sorts itself out.

When Disney bought all of Lucasfilms, it would have seemed that Indiana Jones was naturally included in the deal. And it was. But because Hollywood deal structures are so byzantine they make one’s nose bleed, they had to finalize the arrangement by purchasing marketing and distribution right from Paramount.

Which they did. So Indiana Jones is theirs now.

No plans have been announced for a sequel, but come on. A long as Harrison Ford is alive or on life support, there will be future Indiana Jones films. Surprisingly, despite all his gruff behavior towards Star Wars, Harrison Ford has actually expressed an interest in returning to the hat and bullwhip.

As long as he hires a private security team to keep Shia LaBeouf away from the set, we’re going to allow this to move forward.

Harrison Ford is arguably Conan O’Brien‘s best/weirdest guest (three-way tie with Ted Danson and John Tesh) and so, it’s always delightful when he stops by. On his most recent appearance, Conan pointed out that like Denzel’s “guarantee” and Natalie Portman’s sobbing, Ford also has a go-to acting move: thrusting his index finger in the face of his adversaries whether male, female, or giant slug puppet. Harrison Ford’s ‘I’m being serious now’ finger does not discriminate.

Harrison Ford has joined the cast of The Expendables 3, possibly to replace the now-out Bruce Willis, or possibly just coincidentally having timed the announcement with Willis’.

Anyway, it’s Expendables, so expect Harrison to be comically old and surprisingly spry, as is every character he’s played since pretty much American Graffiti.

The really fun part of this story is Bruce Willis’ departure from the franchise, about which Sylvester Stallone tweeted:

Busted, Bruce Willis. Busted for being greedy and lazy, which, even at this late stage in your very well-established career, is a SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE.

The post 8 Of The Coolest Mistakes In The Indiana Jones Franchise appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
In celebration of the impending release of Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures on Blu RayTM, we want to take a moment to look back on some of Indy’s most interesting production inaccuracies, while refraining from pointing out all the hardcore factual errors. Because let’s be honest; Jewish ghosts, mind-exploding aliens, heart-stealing Thuggee’s and thousand-year-old crusade knights have always given the Indiana Jones movies no chance of achieving historical or scientific accuracy.

“High-Tech” Safety Measures

The Movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Scene: The Well of Souls

The Mistake: As Indy falls to the ground, he’s confronted by a hissing Cobra. But take a careful look (if you own the VHS, as this was taken out of the DVD and Blu Ray versions) and you’ll see the snake’s reflection on the safety glass that had been placed between it and Mr. Ford.

Belloq Eats a Bug While Threatening to Blow up the Ark

The Movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Scene: Canyon Stand-Off

The Mistake: Numerous flies can be seen buzzing around the canyon as Indy and Belloq face off, but the most identifiable, and yes, probably the most famous fly in history is the one that can be seen flying into Belloq’s mouth…never to emerge. So, did he eat it? According to actor Paul Freeman, the fly did fly away, but it was edited (as an inside joke) to look like it disappeared into his mouth.

Indy Gets Shot, Doesn’t Notice

The Movie: Temple of Doom

The Scene: Rope-Bridge Stand-off

The Mistake: After his stand-off with Mola Rom and the Thuggee’s deteriorates and he decides to cut the bridge, Indy, now in a vertical climb, struggles to keep from falling as he’s being shot at with bows and arrows. Try as he might, he’s hit with two arrows…that bounce off his back harmlessly. Nice.

What’s the Deal with that Random Unconscious Guy?

The Movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Scene: Fight on the Runway

The Mistake: Before it was cut, there was a scene just after the Well of Souls escape where Indy pushes a large stone out of the mummy room and finds an Arab man guarding the exit. So Indy simply knocks the guy unconscious. Though the scene never made it into the film, you can still see evidence of its existence: when Indy initially climbs out of the mummy chamber he looks off to the left where the guard would have been. Then, when Indy and Marion are running from the Well of Souls to the plane, the unconscious guard can be seen in the background.

The Stone Wall Head Bounce

The Movie: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

The Scene: The Library Catacombs

The Mistake: Beneath the library in Venice, Indy and Elsa run into a few obstacles while on their search for the tomb of Sir Richard. One of these is a damaged stone wall they need to get through. Indy uses his shoulder as a battering ram, but you can actually see his head bounce off the rock pretty hard as he’s breaking through. Ouch! Good thing its fake rock, otherwise that could have been the end of the movie right there.

The Nazis Accommodate Indy By Driving Over a Continuous, Body-Sized Trench

The Movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Scene: The Truck Chase

The Mistake: While climbing underneath the ark truck, you can clearly see that Indy is laying in a depressed area of the road. This was actually a trench, dug right down the middle of the road to provide stuntman Vic Armstrong with the necessary room to complete the dangerous stunt.

What Magic is This?

The Movie: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The Scene: Area 51 Escape

The Mistake: At the end of Crystal Skull’s frenetic opening sequence, Indy’s escapes, hurtling through the prairie from the Area 51 warehouse on a rocket sled, which comes to a pretty abrupt stop in a pool of water. In real life, this would be like a major car crash with no seat belts, yet Indy and Dovchenko aren’t thrown from the sled. While this isn’t the first or last physics conundrum of the Indy films, the weirdest thing here is that you can actually see that the rocket’s chair has seat belt straps on it for just such a ride. We can either attribute this to being overlooked by the props staff or Spielberg just preferring to completely mock the laws of physics with a visibly unused safety device.

Are Those Snakes Dead?

The Movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Scene: The Well of Souls

The Mistake: Despite getting a ton of snakes for the Well of Souls scene, Spielberg and Lucas couldn’t seem to get quite enough to really make the floor seem like it was made of them as they’d intended. Running up against a tight time schedule, they improvised by cutting up water hoses and layering them amongst the real snakes. Take a closer look and you’ll see which are which.

The post In Honor Of Peyton Manning Leaving The Colts: 6 TV And Movie Franchises That Lost Their Star appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
The big news in the sporting world yesterday is that Peyton Manning is leaving the Indianapolis Colts after sitting out all last season while undergoing surgical procedures on his neck. While it’s not known if he has fully recovered, the Colts are looking to the future, presumably by drafting Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with their first pick.

Will the Colts thrive under Luck? Will Peyton be able to muster his career in its twilight years? Scenarios like this don’t just happen in sports, but also in entertainment, where properties and franchises are held together by actors who, for one reason or another, take leave and move on.

As you’ll see below, the results are a mixed bag. Sometimes franchises improve, sometimes they flounder, and sometimes they just gently fade away. Take a look.

Steve Carell – The Office

The question of whether or not Carell left the office because it had started to suck or if the show started to suck when he was gone is one that I won’t address here, because I didn’t watch the later episodes during his tenure. But it’s clear that his demise has hastened the decline of the show regardless.

While the gimmicky casting of James Spader made for interesting copy and kept all eyes on the show, perhaps people didn’t realize just how integral Steve was to the show. Sure, the supporting characters were able to hold their own, but the show needed a star more than most people realize, and someone like James Spader or even the competent ensemble can’t fill that void.

The fate of The Office is up in the air after Carell’s first year away, but if it does carry on, I would expect it to end with a bang, and not a whimper.

Matt Damon – The Bourne Series

The problem with hiring (or even creating) a big star with your franchise is that it affords them big opportunities outside of the franchise. Most actors want to take the goodwill they create with one role and parlay it into much more. For instance, Matt Damon was in a bit of a slump when he signed on to play Jason Bourne in The Bourne Identity. However, the Jason Bourne character made Damon as close to an action-hero icon as the world has right now.

Damon has used that goodwill to star in both independent and large-scale films, eventually walking away from the Bourne series after The Bourne Supremacy. However, new blood was eagerly anticipated by both the producers and audiences, so the role became one of the most coveted in Hollywood, eventually going to Jeremy Renner.

With Edward Norton playing the villain in The Bourne Legacy, I would be very surprised if this film didn’t succeed on a larger scale than the Damon ones.

This whole time you thought that Han Solo shot first at bounty hunter Greedo at the cantina, but really, it was your only bloodlust that led you to that conclusion, you monster. George Lucas, in some delusional, revisionist history he spouted off to The Hollywood Reporter, claimed that people let themselves be confused about Star Wars because they wanted Han Solo to be something he’s not.

I’ll let the be-flanneled Ewok tell his side of the story:

The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn’t. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.

So there you go.

And here are the two versions in question:

This should, as George Lucas pointed out in his THR interview, prove that you are a bloodthirsty monster that let your insatiable need for gore cloud your judgment. Let’s consider the matter closed. Especially in the comments.

Here’s some news that’s sure to set the internet alight, like attack ships off the shores of Orion. According to Twitch, none other than Harrison Ford is in “early talks” to appear in Ridley Scott’s revisiting of the “Blade Runner” mythos, presumably as the character he played in the first movie, Rick Deckard. This goes against what Alcon Entertainment‘s Andrew Kosove had to say on the subject last summer, but it would be really cool if it were true, right?

I believe in cautious optimism in cases like this, so I’m waiting until this story gets confirmed before plastering “He’s Back!” fliers all over my town and buying stock in flying cars. Still, it would make sense that Ford would be interested in a project like this, since he hasn’t had a big hit apart from the last Indiana Jones movie in a long time – and that movie also featured him reprising a popular character decades after the fact. It didn’t have any flying cars, though. (The Playlist)

To be fair, the book is only 26-years old, which is only like a third of Harrison Ford’s age.

Ford has been recruited by the producers of Ender’s Game to play Hyram Graff, a colonel who tries to manipulate the boy-genius Ender into becoming a weapon against an alien threat.

Aliens again, Harrison? Didn’t we learn anything over the summer?

With this casting news, it appears that the actors of Ender’s Game are falling into two very distinct camps. Very young and very old. Along with Ford, Ben Kingsley has been cast as Ender’s (played by Asa Butterfield) mentor, and True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld will play Ender’s classmate Petra.

While the Ford news is probably only interesting to fans of the novel, the fact that he will have to do press for this film, probably with kids, probably while stoned, is pretty great.

As the title indicates, this video is a shot-for-shot stop-motion recreation of the intro to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Why? Because it’s awesome, that’s why. It’s about 1000 times more watchable than Crystal Skull. Besides, you don’t need an excuse to combine one of the greatest films of all time with the magic of stop-motion animation. In fact, I’m kind of pissed that this didn’t happen sooner, and if it did, I’m pissed that I never saw it. At any rate, Kudos to Jeff Gurwood for his Indy Animation creation. Huzzah!

Good news for fans of stuff that they’re already familiar with! In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Ridley Scott said he will be directing that Blade Runner-related movie, and that Blade Runner-related movie will be a sequel to the 1982 original starring Harrison Ford.

Thus far, the project has no cast and no script, but screw it, it’s Friday, so let’s get excited about this for no particular reason!

*does worm on office floor*

A few things about a sequel here: The original was based on the Phillip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and pretty much exhausted that source material, so the poor son of a bitch that has to write this story will have some pretty big shoes to fill. Further, there will be no Deckard, no Harrison Ford, and none of the cast will be the same.

Sooooo…the thing we’re excited about is that the guy who directed a seminal and lauded science fiction movie is following it up with a tangential movie featuring a completely different cast decades later.

I think I’ve heard this one before.

It doesn’t end well.

If you’ve ever wondered who wears the pants in the Indiana Jones family, the answer is George Lucas. Director Steven Spielberg perhaps over-shared when asked a question about the production of a fifth Indiana Jones film. “You have to ask George Lucas,” he tells Empire. “George is in charge of breaking the stories. He’s done it on all four movies. Whether I like the stories or not, George has broken all the stories.”

So, what you’re saying is that you’re not to blame for the major lack of quality in Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull?

“I sympathize with people who didn’t like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin,” he says. “George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn’t want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in — even if I don’t believe in it — I’m going to shoot the movie the way George envisioned it.”

That’s admirable. Doesn’t explain The Terminal, but still admirable. (Empire)

The post In Honor of Carrie Fisher’s Weight Loss: Proof That God Loves Actors and Hates Actresses appeared first on Screen Junkies.

Earlier this year, Carrie Fisher inspired me to write a horribly sexist post about actresses who have aged less than gracefully. Judging by her recent weight loss, I’m guessing my article inspired her to go on a diet. What else would explain her total transformation (she lost 50 lbs. on Jenny Craig)? At any rate, I’m happy my poorly written drivel was able to help. And in case you missed it the first time around, here’s the article that started it all. Congrats to Carrie Fisher…

I hate making fun of people based on their appearances. Considering I look a lot like Steve Buscemi crossed with Nosferatu, who am I to sit and criticize others for the way they look? But unfortunately, people lap this shit up like Brett Ratner laps up Boone’s Farm strawberry wine, and I’m a hack, so here we are.

At any rate, god hates actresses and loves actors. The proof is all around us, if we know where to look. I looked in the tabloids, and found all the proof I needed. Here are seven examples of famous on-screen couples. In almost every case, the actor involved looks older, but more distinguished, while time has ravaged the once ridiculously hot leading lady. I know it’s not fair, but I didn’t make the rules. You got a problem, talk to the big man upstairs. Until then, take a look and see for yourself.

Tom Cruise and Kelly Mcgillis – Top Gun
In all fairness to Kelly, she was older than Tom when they filmed Top Gun. Also, she’s now openly gay, so she doesn’t have a lot of incentive to conform to my jaded standards of feminine beauty. But Cruise still looks like he could be her son (provided she had him when she was 13). Maybe there’s something to this whole Scientology thing after all. Oh wait, there is: money!

Warren Beatty and MadonnaDick Tracy
It’s been over 20 years since Dick Tracy revolutionized the way people are disappointed by comic adaptations. How has time treated the stars of the film? Warren Beatty still looks like Warren Beatty. Madonna looks like Skeletor with Chlamydia. Keep working that sexy angle, Madge.

Ted Danson and Kristie Alley – “Cheers
Ted Danson looks older, but he carries it well. Hell, I’d still bang him…if I was gay…or if the price was right. But Kristie, on the other hand, isn’t looking so hot. If your attempt at a reality-show has the word “fat” in the title, it’s time to hit the gym.

Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan – Innerspace
Here’s an old pic of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan looking less than thrilled. But here’s a more recent picture of the couple looking happier than ever. Is it just me, or does Meg look great. Oh wait, that’s not Meg at all. She cheated on him with Russell Crowe, so Quaid dumped her for someone half her age.

Here’s a recent picture of Meg looking sexy. Still got it.

Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers – “All in the Family”
This is a tough one. Rob and Sally both got fat. But Sally got fat while devoting her time to charity, and Rob got fat while making crappy films and passing laws that make it illegal for me to smoke in a bar. Up yours, Rob. Sally wins!

Jessica Simpson and Johnny KnoxvilleThe Dukes of Hazzard
In most cases, time’s assault is gradual, and a woman’s beauty slips away over decades. But sometimes, if a woman eats enough McGriddles, it happens almost overnight. That’s what happened to Jessica Simpson. As for Johnny Knoxville, he still looks like the same jackass.

Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher – Star Wars
This list idea was born when I watched Carrie Fisher’s HBO special, “Wishful Drinking.” As Fisher herself points out, it’s not really fair that the image of her younger self wearing a golden bikini is tattooed into the minds of most men under the age of 40. It’s also not fair that Harrison Ford looks relatively the same, except the creepy scarf and earring make him look like a gay-80′s pop singer. But tough titty. That’s life. If Fisher was a normal woman on the street, I wouldn’t think anything of it. But she’s not. She’s Princess Leia, or at least she was. To quote Holy Taco, now she looks like “Salvador Dali’s take on Sally Jesse Raphael.

Harrison Ford remains on the press trail to promote Cowboys & Aliens, which means, we’re going to hear more rumors about a fifth Indiana Jones film. Do not want.

Here are five reasons why a fifth installment is a very, very bad idea.

IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM

Ford has said that he’s more than game for another if the script is there. He’s also been pretty open that cash is the motivating factor here. Why? Doesn’t he have enough that he can afford to try out new roles and take a risk on new franchises? Calista Flockhart can’t possibly be eating him out of house and home. He should take a page out of Indy’s book and realize that greed always leads to demise. In the words of Professer Henry Jones Sr., “Indiana… let it go.”

HIGHLY-UNLIKELY PLOT

Throughout his adventures Indiana Jones has killed approximately 9 million Nazis. Give or take. Don’t you think that the Nazis – a highly-organized and brutal killing force — would seek retribution on the part-time adventurer/college professor? Yes. He’s used to tumbling with assassins, but his guard can’t always be up. You’d just figure that they’d find a way to off him before he reaches old age. He can’t always have a monkey around to taste his food.

PRESERVE THE MEMORY

With each slapdash return to the well, the overall memory of Indiana Jones is sullied. Mention the series to any fan and there will inevitably be some sour grapes. Let us remember Indiana Jones at his best and in his prime, with a whip in one hand and a precious artifact in the other rather than a script rote with hackneyed premises.

THE FRIDGE HAS BEEN NUKED

Yes. Earlier entries in the saga featured faces magically melting, still-beating hearts ripped from chest cavities, and invisible walkways. However, those scenarios didn’t come off as far-fetched. The same can’t be said of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In this entry, Jones rides out a nuclear blast in a refrigerator (everyone knows that discarded fridges are the Devil‘s suffocation boxes), teams up with monkeys, and encounters aliens. Aliens. That’s just too far-fetched, even for the movie series that features an immortal Knight of the Round Table.

Cowboys & Aliens has been the summer movie I was most excited about just because of the high concept. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t be enough western but I’m happy to report it is a full on western, even when the aliens show up.

The introduction of Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) is all silent behavior, so you get a sense of who this guy is visually. Jake suits up as a cowboy in the cold open, and Craig makes a great man with no name. It’s not that different from his rough and tumble James Bond, but I want to see that guy in the old west too.

Get The Alien Cribs Tour In 'Cowboys & Aliens' Trailer

Jake shakes up the town just like any western hero would. Percy Dolarhyde (Paul Dano) is used to making trouble and endangering civilians with no one standing up to him. Jake humiliates Percy in a badass way. Doc (Sam Rockwell) is just a saloon owner with a dream, Meacham (Clancy Brown) is the preacher who still knows he needs a gun and Sheriff Taggart (Keith Carradine) sees outlaws all the time and recognizes how flexible the law is in the old west. Meanwhile Jake keeps beating dudes up.

Woodrow Dolaryde (Harrison Ford) has a stronghold on the town and Ford is having fun scowling it up. Unfortunately, once the town goes looking for the aliens, Mr. Dolaryde is just along for the ride. He gets some good character moments, especially with he and Jake sizing each other up, but it’s not a fully developed part. Ella (Olivia Wilde) is saddled with all the exposition, and I’ll embrace that pun in all its glory but I would have said the same thing if she were in any genre explaining all the backstory.

7 photosOlivia Wilde

Perhaps some of the bad buzz has come from people’s expectations of western. This isn’t the Oscar-y western like True Grit or Unforgiven. It’s like the real westerns of old Hollywood and the Italian era, just a great yarn with cool characters. They still run into bandits and natives, build legends like Woodrow’s war history, ride through the plains on horseback and bond over the campfire.

The little bit of sci-fi is still in the western mold. Jake chases after a spaceship like it’s a runaway stagecoach. In the climactic battle, Nat Colorado (Adam Beach) lassos an alien like cattle. The aliens resemble a combination of Giger, Predator and Blade 2. They look good, although I forgot about their mouth arms until they use them again in the end.

The McGuffin on Jake’s wrist still rubs me the wrong way. It’s a totally artificial mystery. It’s like oh, look, what is this crazy object on his wrist? It exists only to reveal backstory later in the film, and to make it easier for Jake to shoot down alien ships. Other characters come up with creative ways to use their bare bones western tools to fight aliens, but the script hinges a mystery on this artificial device

For me, Cowboys & Aliens is what I wanted in a summer movie. It’s a grand, fantastic world full of big adventure and high concept. Probably not a memorable classic but damn good fun. I hope there’s a porno parody of it. They can call it Reverse Cowgirl & Aliens.

My grandmother used to tell me “if you give Harrison Ford a cowboy hat, he won’t take it off when you want him to. He’ll keep wearing it, again and again and again.” Now, I finally know what she was talking about. The film prints of Cowboys & Aliens are barely dry, and Mr. Ford has signed on to play Wyatt Earp in Black Hats, based on the novel by Max Allan Collins. In it, Earp ends up in New York and has to go up against a young ne’er-do-well by the name of Al Capone.

6 photosAbigail Spencer

The movie will be penned by Kurt Johnstad, who also wrote the script for 300. Perhaps this means that Capone and Earp will team up against some Spartan soldiers. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though. No word yet on who’s going to play Al Capone. Maybe Mark Hamill? (Variety)

A new trailer for Cowboys & Aliens doesn’t quite reveal the alien invaders responsible for blowing up the Old West, but it does show us where they like to kick it. Here we see a brief glimpse of Cowboy Daniel Craig and friends in the alien ship, skulking around without knocking. Gross. I hope they don’t find Mom and Dad Alien showering together. That could be scarring for life.

It also looks like Cowboy Daniel Craig blows up the alien’s crib. Man, he’s a crappier house-guest than Dupree.

Shia “Sequel Boy” LaBeouf notified (warned?) the public that another Indiana Jones sequel is “not so far off.” While George Lucas hasn’t been too forthright about his plans, Shia has taken to extrapolating Harrison Ford‘s workout regimen as a sign that the wheels are in motion.

In an interview with MTV, LaBeouf conveyed that he had talked to Ford recently and that Ford was “staying in the gym” to prepare for the role, so it must be around the corner. Some specious reasoning on Shia’s part, as it’s widely assumed that Lucas hasn’t yet locked down a script. So if Harrison Ford is planning on “staying in the gym” until filming starts, there’s a decent chance he could show up to set looking like a 69 year-old Vin Diesel. Which would be awesome, if only for the comedic value of it all.

Shia hedged his comments by speaking to Lucas’ process, saying “I mean, he’s got to let it sit. He’s going through his ruminations, which is extensive.”

Let’s hope those ruminations get sped up. Not because anyone’s all that excited about another installment, but because poor Harrison is an old man and years of exertion in the gym in anticipation will probably kill him.
